Superscript Numbers in Footnotes

Our corporate style requires that the number of each footnote be superscript - not just in the body of the text but in the footnote itself. Is there a way to have InDesign make them automatically superscript? I can do it manually but I assume there's a way for the numbers to automatically be superscript.
I'm using CS4 and am brand new with the program. I did search the forum but the only related responses didn't say how to apply it to the number within the footnote box, only the number in the body of the text.

I was going to say it was fairly easy but actually turned out to be super-easy!
I'll assume you have a dedicated Footnote paragraph style -- you wouldn't want your footnotes to look just like your text.
In the definition of that paragraph style, call up the GREP Style panel.
Click the button "New GREP Style"
A new item appears in the GREP list; click the text [None] next to "Apply Style" -- it's actually a drop down list.
If you already have a character style with just superscript, you can select it here; otherwise, first make one by choosing "New Character Style ..." at the bottom, name it "superscript", and only have it apply "Superscript".
Click in the field next to "To Text" -- its default is "\d+", meaning the style would get applied to all numbers. Now usually you'd want numbers to be superscripted, but .. not all of them in the entire footnote! So you'd have to think of a way to 'only apply it to numbers that are at the start of the footnote' ... (which is, in fact, quite possible! And I'd be a happy Jongware to tell you how to pull off that particular trick -- but, I'm digressing. Sorry.) The 'super-easy' is because if you do try to use '\d+', all digits in footnotes will be superscripted except the footnote numbers themselves! So why the 'super-easy'? Footnote numbers have a unique code of their own, so InDesign can track them, and update when you insert or delete a note; the GREP code for these is "~F". So just delete the text that is in the "To Text" field and enter "~F" into it (mind you, without the quotes -- those are just to indicate here the text to insert is just "~F". Oh Lordy now I did it again. No Quotes Needed).
... and all that's left for Point #6 is to click OK to close the Paragraph definition.
There you go: automagic superior footnote numbers.

  • Line spacing increased by superscript numbers for footnotes

    in Indesign I am designing a book - at the end of most paragraphs there is a superscript footnote number. The last line of each paragraph has a larger space than the bodytext space or leading. It looks a bit odd - is there a way to  override this - I understand that it is creating the same space from the top of the superscript number to the bottom of the line above but it looks wrong. Can anyone help please?

    1. Define in your paragraph style (you should only work with Paragraph Style) a fixed leading (instead of "Auto")
    2. And/Or go to
    Mac: InDesign > Preferences
    Win: Edit > Preferences
    In type activate "Apply Leading to Entire Paragraphs"
    Redommendation: Set up you footnote numbers with Character Styles.

  • APPLEWORKS 6 automatic numbering of footnotes?

    I have tried to number footnotes (actually, endnotes) in a document, starting at 1 by turning on Automatic Numbering in Format-Document menu. But it won't number them consecutively, simply numbering them superscript 1 each time. Please help!!

    How are you inserting the footnotes? I created a new WP document and entered some text: clicked at a place in the text, hit command-shift-F and got a superscript 1 in the text and a blank footnote numbered 1 at the bottom of the page (as it was only a few lines of text I didn't go for end of document). Then I clicked further down, command-shift-F, got a superscript 2 and a blank footnote numbered 2.
    Is this what you did and it didn't work?

  • Why won't my Page Numbers and Footnotes from Swriter (OpenOffice) appear in .doc (MS Word) documents

    I have written a book using Swriter (OpenOffice).
    I have Footnote descriptions at the bottom of some pages and Page Numbers located at the top and bottom of each page) throughout the book.
    I converted it to a .doc (MS Word) document for some people that have MS Word and the Footnote descriptions do not appear at the bottom of the specific page (the actual Footnote Numbers still appear in the specific sentence). Also, the Page Numbers do not appear at the bottom and top of each page.

    Sorry, that isn't a Firefox support issue. Try the OpenOffice support forum. <br />

  • How to make tiny numbers for footnotes in pages?

    I cant figure out how to make the number small in pages on my Ipad 2. The app is up to date and aswell is the software, iOS 5.1 but I can't figure out how to make the number tiny and move up to the left hand corn of the letter. Example, the number should like like the '2' in h2o but I don't know how, please help.

    Hi vnessar
    When you place the insertion point where you want your footnote referenced (tap, hold, release) and select Insert  > Footnote, it automatically places the superscript number for your footnote there and takes you to the bottom of the page in a Footnote field with the reference number already filled in.
    If you add another, (tap, hold, release - which brings up the "Select | Select All | Paste | Insert" menu) it will become Footnote 2 and so on.
    See Insert footnotes or endnotes
    In step 2. Tap >, tap Insert, and then tap Footnote.  The triangle is the "more button". Just ignore that and tap Insert and Footnote.
    Does that work for you?

    Hi all,
    I have tried to convert the footnotes as text using convertToText() option in indesign Javascript.
    It was retainied the text but not auto footnote number. Alos, I want to retain the footnote reference also.
    Please guide me how to proceed this with Indesign javascript.
    Thanks in Advance,

    Hi,
    Preety poor info so some assumings:
    var myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    var myFoot = myDoc.stories[0].footnotes;
    var count = myFoot.length;
    while (count--) {
         currFoot = myFoot[-1].convertToText();
         currFoot.insertionPoints[-1].contents = SpecialCharacters.EM_SPACE;     //     edit this for another format
         currFoot.insertionPoints[0].contents = " ==> " + (count + 1).toString() + " - ";    //     edit this for another format
    assumed:
    - 1 story in your doc
    - arabic style for numbers
    - footnotes are numbered continuously

  • Can I have 2 different styles for Footnote numbers and footnote text?

    Hello,
    I have a document with plenty of footnotes.
    I would like to assign all the footnote numbers to a character style, and all the text to a different character style.
    For example, I would like to have the footnote numbers in bold and in black, while the footnote text in light and in dark gray.
    Doing this manually isn't an option obviously.
    Is that possible?
    If not are there any scripts out there that can manage it?
    Thank you
    Federico

    It is simpe to make.
    Crete a Chyaracter Style for the footnote number.
    Set up the Paragraph Style for the Footnote text.
    Go to the Nested Styles section
    Select the Character Style
    Apply it to the first specified separator symbol (like tabulator) you have choosen when you have set up your footnotes.
    Use it. It will apply automatically. Of course, you have to choose this Footnote Paragraph Style in the Footnote Set Up Settings in the Type menu.

  • Numbering of Footnotes in Pages 5.0.1

    I have 4 footnotes (data sources) in a one page document in Pages 5.0.1.  I have about 20 lines of text, mostly in bullet form.  Is there any way to reference the 4 footnotes in some cases repeatedly and not in sequential order.
    For example,  Text line one referencing footnotes 1,2.  Text line two referencing footnotes 1,2. Line 5 referencing footnote 3,4.  Lines 8-14 each referencing footnotes 1,2 or just 1 or 2. Line 18 referencing footnote 1,3.
    Thanks for any help.

    Unfortunately, no.  The latest vesion of Pages is seriously crippled.  Note, however, that if you had the previous (1.7.2) version of Pages for iOS, then you can reinstall that on your iPad.
    1. Delete Pages 2 from your iPad
    2. Pluf in you iPad to your mac and fire up itunes
    3. navigate to your iPad in the sidebar and click "Apps" (the second page)
    4. locate the icon for Pages 1.7.2 and click install.
    You can then share documents between your Mac and your iPad (after you export any documents you may have created with the new versions back to PAges 09 format. You can also export them to Word format and then open them with the previous versions of Pages.) That is what I have done.

  • [CS2][JS]Superscript to Footnotes

    Hello scripters,
    I converted a scanned pdf to doc and then load in inDesign my problem is the footnotes became superscript numbers.
    Is there any way we can convert superscript numbers to footnotes in InDesign?
    Thanks,
    CharlesD

    Hi Charles,
    The difficulty is that footnotes imported from your doc-file are not formatted in superscript. They partially formatted with 9 points size,  partially with 10, so it's difficult to differentiate them from the main text.
    I offer you to do the following approach:
    1 Create a paragraph style "Fnote" and assign it a different color – e.g. blue (Footnotes-1a.indd)
    2 Apply "Fnote" style to footnote text:
    Go to find/Change > GREP and select these options
    Find What: .+$
    Find Format: size 9 pt
    Change Format: paragraph style "Fnote"
    Click Change All (Footnotes-1b.indd)
    3 Run the script
    Now you have to manually move footnote references (in blue) to their original positions (in black).
    This solution is far from perfect: not all text is converted to footnotes, not all original text is removed. To make it perfect would require a day, two or more of work, but I have no time for this.
    Kasyan
    myDoc = app.activeDocument;
    app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = null;
    app.findTextPreferences.appliedParagraphStyle = "Fnote";
    myTexts = myDoc.findText();
    for (i = 0; i < myTexts.length; i++) {
        myText = myTexts[i];
        myPars = myText.paragraphs;
        for (j = 0; j < myPars.length; j++) {
            myPar = myPars[j];
            myFN = myPar.parentStory.footnotes.add(LocationOptions.BEFORE, myPar.insertionPoints[0]);
            myFN.texts[0].insertionPoints[-1].contents = myPar.contents.substr(0, myPar.contents.length-1);
    app.findTextPreferences = app.changeTextPreferences = null;
    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = "(?<=~F)(.+)";
    app.findGrepPreferences.appliedParagraphStyle = "Fnote";
    app.changeGrepPreferences.changeTo = "";
    myDoc.changeGrep();
    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;
    alert("Done");
    P.S. The attachment got stuck in the forum, as usual. I'll send it to you by e-mail.

  • Renumbering Endnotes

    Do anyone know of, or can point me in the right direction on a script which would renumber endnotes and endnote references.
    For example I have 10 endnotes numberered 1 to 10
    1 texttexttexttextex
    2 textextextextextextexte
    3 textextextextex
    and in the actual job onlu reference which are superscript numbers (like footnotes)
    so if one gets deleted or added I can then run the script which will look for the reference numbers and renumber them to be be in the correct number order.
    Then renumber all the endnotes as well.

    Try Teus' script to increase/decrease endnote numbers at:
    http://www.teusdejong.nl/thome/ho_body5.html#scripts
    That said, it errored out on me; have just emailed Teus to ask how to resolve it. :)

  • Footnote Numbers in the note

    I have looked but cannot find a way to make Pages automatically not superscript the number in the note itself. I think I have figured out how to manually convert it to a regular number, but not a way to set Pages 2 to not automatically superscript. Does anyone know a trick I have missed. Cheers!
    Message was edited by: jzents

    Hello jzents,
    as I know there is no way to tell Pages to automatically use your own created style for footnote numbering. Footnotes are one of the very restricted functions in Pages like links are, too.

  • Export as (X)HTML seems to discard footnote marks

    I've a large collection of publications developed in InDesign, but when I export them as (x)html, the footnote marks change from maall superscripted numbers to full-size non-superscripted numbers.
    Is this an intended behavior, a bug or something that can be corrected?
    I really need to retain them as superscripts, as ourcustomers are unlikely to want to pay for de-footnoted text (;-))

    Regrettably, the problem is that the XHTML contains neither a nor a <span> for me to style with css: it looks as if the superscript is discarded in
    File -> Export for Dreamweaver
    File -> Export for Digital Editions and
    File -> Export -> XML
    Interestingly, the supescript is present in
    File -> Export -> Tagged Text

  • Unwanted space before the footnote reference

    In my document, which has hundreds of footnotes, in some places, in the text, before the superscripted numbers that are the references to the footnotes there is an unwanted space. How can get rid of the spaces in one step? If it's with Find/Change - how do I do this? If not, how is this done?

    find-change grep
    find:   \s(?=~F)
    change: leave empty

  • Figure numbering

    Just out of interest, is there a "figure numbering" system in pages? I would like it to be dynamically linked and the numbering automatically generated, just like how pages automatically deals with the numbering when inserting footnotes (including the superscript numbers that reference the footnotes). I would also like to know if its possible to do it for my graphs which ive used pages to generate.
    I ask because I write reports and journals and will have to use this in the future. I understand ms word does this, but i would prefer to switch to pages.
    Thanks
    Sealy

    ok thanks for your help, i think ill hold on switching to pages untill thats sorted, ive submitted a feature request.

  • Importing footnotes from Word (and making endnotes)

    I have always had great problems importing footnotes from Word. After having saved Word as an .rtf and importing the text through and Cmd/Ctrl-D the footnotes come in at the bottom of every column in the text frame.
    Is there any way of getting them to go to the end of the text whilst still keeping their numbers and the numbers in the body of the text?
    I think what I want to do is change footnotes to endnotes.
    At the moment I'm just deleting all the footnotes from each column and changing the leading to zero to close the box and then pasting all the footnotes from Word into the document as endnotes.
    This way at least I still get the superscript numbers in the text OK but it's not a very elegant solution.

    Hello Guys, Thank you so much for your answers. Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I've been really busy and I've only just got back to this job where I have all the footnotes. I tried  the Footnotes2Endnotes_v23.jsx and it worked first time!!
    This will save me countless hours with this issue. I have resorted to pasting in the text and laboriously re-entered the numbers in the past!
    Thank you Eugene and David.
