Supplying CAN devices with bus power

Hello everyone,
Is it possible to provide bus power to a CAN device with a PCI-CAN Series 2 card? 
The manual is a little confusing in this matter.  Table 4-1 in the manual states that V+ is "Optional CAN power supply if bus power or external VBAT is required."  This makes me think that I can supply a CAN device with bus power from the card's internal source (as long as my jumper is configured for internal). 
A few lines later the following statement is made: "V+ supplies bus power to the CAN physical layer if external power is required...it is not necessary to supply V+, unless you have configured the VBAT jumper for EXT."  This makes me think that V+ has nothing to do with supplying power to devices, and only with powering the bus on the card itself.
If it is not possible to supply bus power with the NICAN card, what is the recommended method for powering a device on the same CAN network (assuming the device is not powered somewhere in its own circuitry)?

the part of the manual that I assume you are referencing is:
    "V+ supplies bus power to the CAN physical layer if external power is
    required. All High-Speed Series 2 PCI, PXI, and USB hardware is powered
    internally, so it is not necessary to supply V+, unless you have configured
    the VBAT jumper for EXT."
The PCI-CAN/2 cards can be powered either internally or externally.
To power the device externally the VBAT jumper should be configured for EXT,
now your card will be powered by an external source, your card cannot be
configured to be the source for another device. Please reference the following KnowledgeBase:

As for powering your CAN device it really depends on your device; what are the power
specifications? Can you consider using a battery?

    We're two students working on a project to simulate CAN devices connected to a master. We have to "build" these devices in LabView. We've been working with the CANopen Library and the Channel API.
    We would prefer to use the CANopen Library, because it is easier that way to build the device's behaviour as it would be in "real-life". But the problem is, that the CANopen Library has been developed to build a CAN Master. Is there a way to bypass that. So that we could build the other side... a CAN device.
    We figured out, that we simply could alter the COB-IDs for de PDOs, that would do it. But the whole SDO and Sync part isn't that easy to bypass.
    Would be glad if we could get a tipp

    I'm a little confused on the master/slave terminology you're using, however, as CAN (also Canopen) is really a peer bus. Any device on the CAN bus can transmit and receive messages as described below (from the NI-CAN User Manual):
    "When a CAN device transmits data onto the network, an identifier that is unique throughout the network precedes the data. The identifier defines not only the content of the data, but also the priority. A CAN identifier, along with its associated data, is often referred to as a CAN Object. When a device transmits a message onto the CAN network, all other devices on the network receive that message
    . Each receiving device
    performs an acceptance test on the identifier to determine if the message is relevant to it. If the received identifier is not relevant to the device (such
    as RPM received by an air conditioning controller), the device ignores the message.
    When more than one CAN device transmits a message simultaneously, the identifier is used as a priority to determine which device gains access to the network. The lower the numerical value of the identifier, the higher its priority."
    As you can see, you can use our CAN interface "slave" to receive commands from any other device on the CAN bus "master".
    Also the Canopen Library is just the API for LabVIEW, both CAN and Canopen ends up in Bits which then will be send to the "Listeners"! They´re just on other Layers on the Programming. But both is really easy with LabVIEW

    we got following message on Cisco Nexus 5548 (NX-OS 6.0(2)N2(3)):

    Strange thing is that power supplies at Nexus are DC (48 Volts), not an AC.
    I serach at Cisco Error Message decoder and didn't find anything.
    At Nexus 6000 (we have Nexus 5500) System Messages document I found this:
    Error Message PFMA-2-PS_HIGH_VIN: Input Voltage [dec] exceeded maximum threshold of 250V for Power supply [dec].
    Explanation Input Voltage has exceeded higher threshold of 250V for Power Supply
    Recommended Action Please perform a showenvironmentpower'and'showplatforminternalinfo'tocollectmoreinformation.'
    But, there is no any useful info from this commands (just first command works).

    1. The connection setup looks fine to me for a single ended measurement - you may want to connect to 68 and 32 for differential measurements.
    3. The example should be ready to take measurements
    4. The Data Acquisition card forces the input range to a valid value - 8V is not a valid range and it will be coerced to 10V - this is expected.
    5. I am not sure why its not letting you cahnge the channel but a good way to test you hardware is by opening up a test panel in Measurement and Automation Explorer - can you try that and let me know?

  • Can I use a flat screen monitor with my Power Mac G$?

    Can I connect my Power Mac G4 (model M5183) to a modern flat screen monitor? I already tried it with a small flat screen TV which works fine with my MacBook Pro but couldn't make it work with the G4. I only need the G4 for a SCSI slide scanner that I use occasionally, and would love to get rid of the mostrosity of a monitor that came with the G4. I've updated the processor in the G4 to 1 GHz and run it with OS 10.5.8.

  • IPhone sync takes bus power from other USB devices?

    My external sound card/audio interface/whatever you want to call it completely disappears from Audio/MIDI Setup when iPhone syncs.  Does the phone require such an abnormally large amount of bus power that this would occur or is my situation unusual?

    Thanks Lawrence; I think I'm starting to understand but have a few more questions. 
    So, the audio business is running through the hub (not powered, bussed through one port on the laptop) and all those devices must not exceed .5 amps or else failure occurs (in something).
    The phone runs through its own port (the one I leave open for things like thumbdrives, external hard drives, etc) and also can require (up to) .5 amps of power, the maximum that port can supply. 
    If both ports have their limits, why is the phone causing failure in a discrete port exclusive of the phone?
    I would totally understand the failure if the phone were hooked up to the hub alongside the audio interface, but it's not.  That makes total sense -- the port can only supply what it was designed to supply.  But why would the phone cancel other, separate, tasks if it has it's own dedicated port?

  • My battery life between charges on my ipad 1 has plummeted to about 2 hours.  The guy at the genius bar suggested it might be an app (unfortunately I didn't have the device with me).  Does anyone know of apps that cause heavy drains on power?  Thanks!

    The battery life between charges on my iPad has plummeted to about 2 hours.  The guy at the genius bar said the charge should last about 10 hours and suggested it might be an app (unfortunately I didn't have the device with me and the nearest Apple Store to me is 2 hours away).  Does anyone know of apps that cause heavy drains on power?  It also does not charge when it is plugged into my MacBook while I am using the iPad but it does when I am not using the iPad.  I mostly use the iPad to read e-mails, play Team Lava games, read books through iBooks or Kobo and the ABC Player.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

    Restore is about the only option left, short reinstalling the whole thing as new.
    Before you restore, go to I tunes and turn off automatic sync.  Then plug the machine in.  Upload any photos that you have taken with the pad into I photos, or where ever you keep your pictures.  Then, in I tunes, transfer any purchases.
    If any apps or purchased music get lost in the process, you can download them again for free.
    You do not want to make a backup of what you have on the pad now. If you do, when you restore, you will simply recreate the same problem.
    What you want to do is restore from a prior backup.  Do that. 
    Then run the system status app and see what the CPU numbers look like.  If they are ok, then you can start to re add apps until the problem shows up.
    If this does not do it, then the last step is to set the pad up as new.  Check the numbers, then add the apps and settings back one by one.    While it is likely to be an app, it may be a setting somewhere.

  • Imac G5, Can I use a power supply from a G4 Q-silver (rewired connector)?

    I've got a G5 Imac with a blown PS, and I'm thinking of modifying a G4 Quicksilver power supply for use as the power source for a 20" Imac G5. Yeah, I know it sounds a bit weird, but hey, I was given this Imac G5 (1st Gen. 1.8GHz) for free. It's missing the back cover, and the PS is shot. So if I blow it up it no major loss. It's a project!
    I have determined that the original PS is shot and needs to be replaced. I don't really want to drop $140 for a replacement PS, as I would also have purchase the back cover for another $40 + shipping. Go figure, right? It appears that most of those power suppies tend to fail early, anyway.
    During my checks of the Imac internals, I also noted that during the "power on" tests, using the old power supply, I would get the second indicator light on the motherboard to flash for just a moment. According to Apple, this indicates that the motherboard is probably good, and that the power supply is bad as it's only providing a momentary voltage spike during the start up faze, before the power drains from the PS. Then it quits. So I thought, is it possible to use the QS power supply, only modifying (rewire) the main 22 pin connector voltages so they match the Imac's pinout? Both connectors are 22 pin and most of the pinout voltages match up the same. There would appear to be only two major connectors that would need to be rewired. So can I use a modified QS power supply to power my Imac?
    A couple of extra notes about this Imac:
    1) There is no back or stand with this Imac, it just the main guts. So I would need to build a suitable enclosure to maintain proper air flow, and use the QS power supply outside the Imac. That wouldn't appear to be a big problem.
    2) My biggest concern is this. The QS power supply uses 28v for the start circuits, versus 24v for the G5 Imac PS. Would this make a significant difference, and if so, why? I'm assuming it will, but it an area I'm unsure of with the Imac. Any thoughts or experiance in this area here would be greatly appreciated.
    3) Hey, if worse comes to worse, I can always purchase the extra parts and rebuild the Imac for around $200-$300 US, and it would still be a deal (at least I think so). However, at present this is just a pet project, and if it goes south (doesn't work), it's not like I'm out some major $$$$.

    My iMac went totally went black tonight when my grandchildren were using the iMac. I can't power it up? Have there been issues with the power supply?

    It may just be the power cord (between the mains and the computer).   If you have an Apple store or Authorised store near you, take the cord in and check it out.  Indeed, check if it has been partly pulled out by pressing it firmly into the back of the computer.

    There are PCI/PXI solutions to do what you require. For example you could use an S-series device or a DSA board. However a set-up for connection to a laptop is more tricky. The reason is that devices with these features are based around generally high end and therefore need to use the higher bus speeds of PCI/PXI.
    Is there definitely a requirement to use a laptop, or would a small PXI system or desktop be ok instead?

    You'd have to read your car manual but chances are it won't put out enough power for the iPad. The car is likely set up to charge a phone, most of which typically want half the power an iPad wants.
    I think your  options are to get a cigarette lighter looking charger, making sure it's powerful enough for an iPad...or you can get power inverters for about $25, where they plug into the cigarette lighter/power point and have a normal household type outlet on the other end. Then you'd just plug your charger  in like you would at home.
    Another option would be to look for something like a Zagg Sparq, which is a battery operated charger...plug the Sparq into the outlet at home. Its battery holds a charge and you can use that to charge your device. (zagg isn't the only manufacturer of such a device, Targus has one as well). Just look for portable chargers.
    The key to remember is to make sure it's rated for an iPad, which will want more power than a cell phone.

    I am a beginner in using labview. I need to use labview signal to turn on >=2 ac 8 actuators with one power supply. The 24VDC, 0-3A power supply is enough to drive all 8 actuators which need 24VDC and 0.1A current. So the main function is like turning on 2 or more than 2 switches in series with the 8 actuators with one power supply. Any suggestion of some simple module for this purpose? Thanks.

    Maybe I didn't say the question clear. I have one power supply (24VDC, 0-3A) and 8 solenoid valves (24VDC and 0.1A). Two valves (or more than two in future) have to be activated each time. I would like to find something that can work like switches installed in series with the valves. Then I can wire the valves (with the switches) in parallel with the power supply. As I turn the switches on and off with signals from Labview board, power to that specific valve will be turned on and off.
    Any advice for this kind of switches or any module that can be controlled by Labview signal? Please help! Thanks.

    I am willing to bet that the current PSU in your computer would support the GPU you are wanting to install on the computer. That GPU is not as power-hungry as a top-end card, so won't utilize too much power.
    I honestly would recommend installing the GPU first prior to spending money on a PSU you may not need. If the computer seems to not be working, you should be able to install the corsair 650w PSU into your computer without many complications -- however I would talk to a local Geek Squad Counter-intelligence agent prior to purchasing the product.
