Support for 4mm tape drives?

I know this probably isn't the best forum for this, but I didn't see any forums for deal with periphrials at all...
At work, we occasionally get some 4mm DDS-3 tapes that we have to read (pretty simple, just use Unix's "dd" command), and the Sun computer we've been using, we're getting ready to retire (for other reasons). HP makes 4mm tape drives (still makes DDS-3's but also DDS-4's and DAT72's), and makes USB and SCSI models. See
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/storage/tapestorage/datdrives.html
MacOS X has "dd". Macs have USB. A MacMini is cheaper than say a new Sun. But will a MacMini with MacOS X 10.4 be able to use an HP USB based 4mm tape drive? Is it supported? Can I use it with "dd"? Really, I suspect the question is MacOS X specific, and not specific to MacMini's, but again, for lack of an appropriate forum for this question...
If you've used an HP USB based 4mm drive (DDS-3, DDS-4, DAT72) with a Mac, let me know. I've searched Apple's web site for 4mm and came up with nothing related. If this information is out there, it's well hidden.

You might try asking in the Mac OS X 10.4 area. I think you'd be more likely to find someone who knows there, should there be an answer (probably not many mini owners use 4mm tape).
Good luck.

  • Oracle VM Server 2.2.1 - support for NTFS external drive?

    Hi,
    Another "newbie" question here... we have just installed Oracle VM Server 2.2.1 on a Dell box and now we want to install some Template VM's that we downloaded. The problem is - they are on an external Hard Drive that is an NTFS drive.
    So - when we connect the drive it's detected ok - but we can't mount it as the NTFS filesystem support doesn't appear to be installed as standard?
    If it isn't - how/where do we get NTFS support into the Kernel?
    Any help appreciated.
    Regards,
    Bren

    Hi Bren,
    unfortunately as far as I know native NTFS support is in RHEL/OEL 5.4. And since Oracle VM is based on OEL 5.3 there is no direct support for NTFS.
    However there is an "unofficial" and probably not supported possibility to install FUSE and get NTFS3g to get what you want:
    Point the yum update server to OVS 2.2.1 and OEL 5.3 (on which OVS is based) on public-yum.oracle.com:
    # vi /etc/yum.repos.d/public-yum-el5.repo
    [el5_u3_base]
    name=Enterprise Linux $releasever U3 - $basearch - base
    baseurl=http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/EnterpriseLinux/EL5/3/base/$basearch/
    gpgkey=http://public-yum.oracle.com/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle-el5
    gpgcheck=1
    enabled=1
    [ovm22_2.2.1_base]
    name=OracleVM 2 - 2.2.1 - $basearch - base
    baseurl=http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleVM/OVM2/2.2.1/base/$basearch/
    gpgkey=http://public-yum.oracle.com/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle-el5
    gpgcheck=1
    enabled=1
    Then you are able to install gcc compiler, which is needed for FUSE:
    # yum install gcc
    Insert the OVS Server CD or use the OVS repository from public-yum to install the develop kernel:
    # yum install kernel-ovs-devel
    Download the required FUSE packages and NTFS3g:
    http://ntfs-3g.org
    http://fuse.sourceforge.net/
    # wget http://marush.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/ntfs-3g-200944-el5i686.rpm
    # wget http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/fuse/fuse-2.7.4.tar.gz
    Install Fuse:
    # tar -xvzf fuse-2.7.4.tar.gz
    # cd fuse-2.7.4
    # ./configure
    # make
    # make install
    # modprobe fuse
    # cd ..
    Install NTFS3g:
    # rpm -Uvh ntfs-3g-200944-el5i686.rpm
    Then you should be able to mount the ntfs filesystem:
    # mkdir /ntfs
    # echo "/dev/sda3 /ntfs ntfs-3g defaults 0 0" >> /etc/fstab
    # mount -a
    Note however, that this probably is not supported.
    So mounting the drive on a windows computer and copying the files via. pscp might probably be the easier and supported way...
    Regards
    Sebastian

  • St.conf parameters for SDLT tape drive / Solaris 8

    Hello,
    I need the parameters for the SDLT tape drive from Tandberg for the st kernel driver. In the st.conf there is no entry for Tandberg SDLT.
    With the st.conf, shipped with Solaris 8 10/01, my V880 crashes when accessing the SDLT with the mt command.
    Does anyone here have the parameters?

    Hi Thomas,
    Actually, a bug 4495684 has been filed to fix this issue. A 2.6, 7,
    8 and SOlaris 9 patch should come out soon that will add this entry
    in the st.conf.
    I constructed this entries from the bug description. Try if it works.
    It should else wait for the patch. Any way, please let me know

  • Support for Iomega Zip drives?

    Does OS 8 have built-in support for external Iomega Zip drives?
    Does anyone know if OS 7.x does?

    I don't know about System 7.5, but I have a PowerMac 6500/300 that came with both System 7.6.1 and an internal ZIP drive. I think you do need to download some drivers from Iomega to get it to work however. I do know that when I tried a clean install of OS 8 some years back, I couldn't use the ZIP drive. I think I also had to upgrade the ZIP drivers at some point, but I can't remember if it was when I upgraded to OS 8, applied the 8.1 patch, or upgraded to 8.5 and applied the 8.6 patch.
    All I know is that you can use both the internal and the external ZIP drives with 7.6.1 if you download a driver from Iomega. Weather or not you can still do so is another issue. I could extract them from the RestoreCD, but it wouldn't have an installer.

  • Drivers for scsi tape drive

    morning, mr
    i have a SUN blade 1500, solaris 9, i attached Fujitsu tape drive 3480/90 M2488C, in adaptec scsi (se) card, but i don see the drive in solaris, the scsi card is good (tested) and Fujitsu tape drive is good (tested).
    Please, what i need to do?, what command, patches? i don know wath to do
    thank you

    Consider using a SCSI card that has been qualified to work in a SPARC-based system.

    Adaptec brand cards do not work in that architecture.
    They work in PeeCee's.

  • OS10 support for Magneto-Optical drives

    Hello,
    I've got OS10.3 on my G3 and I'd like to replace my zip100 with a Fujitsu Magneto-Optical Drive; does this OS support this hardware?
    (Fujitsu's site doesn't seem to mention the Apple OS in the supported OS's for this type of device.)
    Thanks.

    Mad Russian, welcome to the discussions.
    If Fujitsu doesn't make mention of Mac OSX compatability, you would be better to find one that does to avoid the headaches of tring to get it to work.

  • USB Support For 2TB+ Hard Drives

    Can anyone tell me if the T-61 supports (access the drives full capacity) multi-terabyte hard drives?
    Under XP?
    Win7?
    I.e. 3 TB Sata drives in a USB 2.0 external enclosure..
    Thaniks in advance,
    C.

    There are no (realistic) limitations as of now for how big an USB-drive can be, that I know of. I admit, I haven't tested anything larger than 2TB, but that works fine, single partition, no problems whatsoever.
    The only "problem" being, of course, that the T61 only supports USB 2.0, which isn't really the quickest - unless you have a FW-port, of course.
    EDIT: This is valid for Vista (and I assume Windows 7) - dunno about XP, but I have a feeling it might be a bit more picky...

    Unfortunately I need 3TB as backup drive for 2 x 1,5TB disks
    3TB HDD on G41M is gambling.
    But what do you mean with "I need 3TB as backup drive for 2 x 1,5TB disks"?
    And why don't you use 2 x 2TB if you really need that kind of backup?

  • Support for hard disk drive camcorders

    I am currently using FCE with footage I have taken using my digital stills camera (which produces mov files.) I am now looking to buy a decent camcorder but have read on the forums that FCE does not support HDD or DVD camcorders, only DV and HDV ones - is that the case?
    I thought HDD camcorders produced video files that I could just import into my project (much like my stills digital camera) rather than going through the whole capture process into FCE - can anyone tell me if this is so? If so, why does FCE 'not support' them?
    Please help a camcorder and FCE newbie out before he makes an expensive mistake.
    Thanks
    Darius

    FCE supports standard video formats. Once again some stupid camera manufacturer has come up with non-existent format and expects people to use it. That's just BS. There is no digital format that is 848x80. There is no digital format that's 30fps. There is no SD format that uses square pixels. And who knows what codec it's using. Do you? The format specifications for DV and HDV are created by consortiums and sanctioned by international standards bodies. None of the formats available in DV or HDV conform to that. Just because they're using the QuickTime architecture doesn't mean anything. In FCP you can make a sequence any shape and a number of different frame rates, that doesn't mean it's a standard format. When you put material in an FCE sequence it has to conform to the standard specifications of the format your selected. Your material doesn't conform to anything, which why you have to render it.

  • Improve Support for External Hard Drives

    I have tens of thousands of images, so many that they won't fit on a single hard drive size that comes in laptops, and yet I like to have all of the thumbnail images in a single database along with the keywords so I can search. Just today, a client emailed wanting me to check on some photos from last fall, and I'm out of the office right now.
    Yes, Lightroom will come up even though the external hard drive is missing, *BUT* its checking each of the images that aren't there, and since there's tens of thousands of them, its taking forever.
    I will leave it up to the designers to craft a solution, but offhand I'd say the best solution is to make the program smart enough to notice when images are stored on an external hard drive, and not freak out when that hard drive isn't there.

    It is not freaking out. It is just checking, but as you say there are 'thousands'. What I think they will be doing is moving it to more of a background process like they do preview building, so it won't be as much in the way. I think this is what can be hoped for.

    To be quite honest, I don't know. I would assume that there would be no problems, but I don't like to assume. I would try it in a heavy-load testing environment.

  • When resuming from standby in OSX, firefox has no gesture support for scrolling, tapping to click or three finger flick back and forth in Snow Leopard

    I never experienced this with firefox 6. The problem arose with 7 and continues with 8.

    I'd like to chime in and add that there is currently no acceptable Font Management solution for OSX.
    Sorry, but it's true.
    Me, and every professional designer / ad agency / design firm I know struggles with this every day. In fact, most of them have resorted to the 'ol "temporarily drag said fonts into ~users/library/fonts, and then out again when you're done".
    That's no way to work.
    I've tried them all. And I know people who've tried them all. Font Book, Suitcase2, Font Explorer X, FontAgentPro, etc, etc. And they ALL have major problems. Especially when you have more than a few hundred fonts. Which most designers easily do.
    We need a robust, stable, AUTO-ACTIVATING solution ala ATM in os9... I'm not a programmer, but I gotta ask: why is this so hard?
    I've used Font Dr to check and re-check ALL my fonts. Most of which are bought-and-paid-for professional versions. I keep a bare minimum of fonts activated at startup. I've read all the "How Fonts Work in OSX" articles, and I know what the heck I'm doing! But my font life on Panther, Tiger, Leopard and now Snow Leopard has been a living ****.
    YES the Helvetica disaster is a huge problem. But I think the issue is much, much larger.
    I spend literally HOURS of billable time each week dealing with this nightmare. When it comes time to design something, and find "the perfect font" for a headline, or a logo –which is something that used to fill me with glee– I'm consumed by dread. Having to yet again wade through this depressing morass of stupidity.
    Sorry for the rant. But this issue is literally EVERYWHERE on forums and message boards, but NOWHERE in MacWorld, ArsTechnica, CNET, etc, etc. AKA the kinds of pubs that could actually hold Apple's and the other companies feet to the fire on this issue.
    Something MUST be done.
    Darnit!

  • Can I use tape drive for backup with win 2012 OS & Sybase database?

    I have installed enhancement package 6 for SAP ERP 6.0 with OS windows 2012 and database sybase ASE(15.7.050). I am facing problem while taking database backup on tape drive. I want to know how to initialize tape drive in case of sybase DB and is it possible to take back-up on same. I failed to schedule backup from DB13 so now I am doing that activity by command line. So please help me to solve these issues.
    Here I am attaching some files related with backup commands that presently I am using. My SAP system ID is DQS.

    That output actually looks pretty good, it was dumping to the tape drive, it just ran out of tape because the drive apparently doesn't automatically detect when it is reaching the end.
    For the next step, try adding a CAPACITY parameter to your dump command as discussed at these places in the documentation.
    Specifying tape capacity for dump commands
    Set the Maximum Capacity for a Tape Drive
    Your output above shows it was able to dump 87565594 KB before it ran out of tape,
    so lets be a little conservative and try
    dump database DQS to TAPE1 with   capacity = 87000000, init
    go
    When the dump reaches that point, ASE should prompt you to pop in another new tape
    and then issue the sp_volchanged procedure from a second session (it will tell you what parameters to use for sp_volchanged).
    Note: once we get the dump working successfully, we can then create a logical dump device that would store the capacity value, and create a full dump configuration so you gain all the new functionality like dump history, etc.
