If you can't do it via Safari, is there an app for it? If not then you can't do it.

Bootcamp - Seems there is no Support from Microsoft  for Windows 8.1, once it is loaded.
I Just got off the Microsoft Technical Help line (Australia ph132058) and they refused to help me because I am running Win 8.1 in Bootcamp.
I have the latest Mac Book Pro Retina with a 1TB Solid State Hard drive running Win 8.1, beautiful machine, but its slower than my old MBP running windows 7 on a standard Drive.
The niggiling problem is that it seems to hang up for seven or 8 seconds on menial tasks........ like generating a new Folder or Note etc. Otherwise it runs reasonably well but not blindingly fast....
I wasn't aware Microsoft refused to help win 8.1 users on the Mac Platform........ shouldn't this Information be made more public...! Seems they are keen to drive potential Windows users away!!
Any suggestions on where I should go for help on this (Windows/Bootcamp in General) would be much appreciated ? ........ don't mind paying a reasonable price if the service is good......
I guess the wheel has turned and Microsoft are having a go at Apple again...?
    Many thanks ....... Martin V

    Thanks Turbostar.
I was thinking along the same lines. I installed Win 8.0 Pro and upgraded to 8.1 ........ probably a bad move.
I have bought a new 8.1 Licence but cant risk doing a complete reinstall until I have a back up machine ready. (My old MBP is getting a new hard drive) ......... so will give that a go in about a weeks time when the back up is in place. Cant risk having nothing!
When you say "Clean Install" ..... do you mean everything ..... as in Reformat the Bootcamp sector and start from scratch.?
I have a 2 TB LaCie Thunderbolt drive with my back up data on ..... is there a way to make the Reinstall process and large amount of Data transfer easy?
The reinstall is something I need to read up on. I was hoping the solution might be some kind of Tune up on the SSHD.
Good to hear you have a number of MBP's that are flying, I would be disappointed if the final quality wasnt a bit better.
..... do you have any tips on screen Res on the Retina ..... I am running Windows at 125% Zoom, but the Bluetooth, power, wireless, Date Icons etc are all still tiny ...... could really do with an alternative to the old "Advanced Appearance Settings"
    cheers ..... Martin V

  • Non training for tech support folks in store or on line for no firewire

Has anybody else found that the Apple support people themselves have no idea what to do without the firewire?
I went through four different people and four different opinions at the store about how I could migrate from my old iBook G4 without firewire with some telling me wireless or ethernet was impossible.
WIth no thanks to the apple people or support documents on their site, I got a wired ethernet network created between my two computers using a ethernet crossover wire. But then I couldn't get migration assistant to work because my old computer runs 10.3.9. I got on line with a woman who did not listen (I said off the bat there was no firewire -- though she should have known without my telling her from knowing it was a new macbook) and that I had set up the ethernet connection. I followed hersteps for 10 minutes before she said, "oh wait, you don't have a firewire cable" and put be back on hold. After she came back again, and finally transferred me over to a "specialist", all he could tell me was that I had to do everything manually and that it was my fault because my computer was too old and because I had chosen to buy the MacBook and not the MacBook pro.
I have been with Apple since the IIe. I got to play once on the proto type for the first little Mac. But now I am very very angry with a company that I think no longer cares for its customers. To not provide needed documentation (I found documents on line that spoke of 10.3 and migration assistant and no where in them did I find useful information, like this just isn't possible) and not to provide training so that your so-called support people have clue one is outrageous.

Yes, the omission of a FireWire port on the new MacBooks is definitely going to be an issue with many of us loyal Apple products users and owners, especially the ones holding the bag with FireWire HDs, Audio Interfaces, high end video, etc. Even if FireWire is going to be omitted because of future upgrades to faster USB and other port based systems, now is not the time to stop installing FireWire ports, especially without a technical alert for customers.
Most lower end PC laptops, Dell, etc. have FireWire ports available on those systems and probably will continue to offer them until new technologies take hold.
I was really excited about the new, more powerful Aluminum MacBooks and was looking into an upgrade from my older white MacBook 2.2 MHz, until I read the specs about no FireWire port and from reviews in MacWorld and various posts I have read about other customers concerns about this same issue.
Actually I use the FireWire port everyday, more than USB, like 8-12 hours to hook up my Tascam FireOne FireWire audio interface. The better audio interfaces are mostly FireWire supported presently anyway.
Companies are still manufacturing FireWire peripherals and some music software requires FireWire audio interfaces for best performance and lessen latency problems. Although some USB audio interfaces are better than others, Apogee and other fine audio interfaces are still designed to be connected via FireWire.
My little MacBook runs GB and other music software just fine, and I don't see a need to invest in USB products, nor buy the more expensive MBP just because it still has the FireWire 800 port. Unless there are USB/FireWire based adapters made available that work flawlessly, workarounds to connect Firewire peripherals to the new MacBooks, many of us that are buying FireWire hardware are being left out in the loop. We already have made substantial investments in FireWire based hardware and shouldn't have to purchase other USB peripherals because the new MacBooks don't have the ports available anymore.
I have been supported and buying Apple products since 1992, so I guess that makes me a loyal Apple customer. I feel I have to address the FireWire issue, because this issue alone puts a real roadblock in upgrading to the new MacBooks. Hopefully Apple will address these concerns, which seem to be many from their customers. Hopefully a solution will be offered, such as the ports being installed in the next generation of MacBooks. Then I can justify an upgrade.

  • Has Pacman3 dropped support for the NoUpgrade Lines in pacman.conf?

I just upgraded to Pacman 3.  When I upgraded I quickly saw some output on my sceen saying it was doing a one time "reset" and I believe it said I could delete the NoUpgrade lines in pacman.conf.
I noticed that pacman.conf.pacnew does not have any NoUpgrade lines.
Should I delete all the NoUpgrade lines from my pacman.conf file?
Is the NoUpgrade line no longer supported in pacman3?
If so, how can I protect some of my config files from being overwritten during upgrades?
    Rob

They're still supported, there just aren't any by default anymore. They were redundant.
You can/should remove any that are listed in the "backup" list for the packages they come from (pacman -Qii package). Those are all handled as if they were in NoUpgrade anyway.

  • Multiple line voltage support for iMac

I see from the tech specs that the 2010 iMacs support line voltages from 100v to 240v. I'm thinking of buying one soon in CA, but may be moving to Germany later this year. Can someone confirm that the iMac power supply supports 110v and 220v?

Good luck...for a North American, Europe is a great place to live, at least for a time...the difference in distances from place to place after NA is something. Go from Paris to Heidleberg for a day...quick and easy highway system...no speed limit on the AutoBahn between cities...great beer and wine and sausage, etc.
And the history you can see. Living there vs visiting makes all the difference in the world.

  • Sun Studio 12 support DOS text (e.g. CR\LF) for line continuation ?

I moved up to Sun Studio 12 hoping that I could solve a age old problem that allows me to share my code via NFS across multiple systems. AIX and GCC Linux precompilers and compilers have not problem with a code like this:
    #ifndef FSIBITON^M
    #define FSIBITON(x) \^M
    (long)( \^M
    ( ~(unsigned long)0 >> x ) & \^M
    ( ~(unsigned long)0 << ((sizeof(long)*8) - (x+1)) ) \^M
    )^M
    #endif^M
(where ^M is the CR character)
but for Solaris with the Sun Solaris compilers I have always had to copy the tree and convert to UNIX text.
The line continuations are there for z/OS MVS record length limits to avoid having to modify default systems to build on that platform.
    Error:
"/release/rel122/rps100/fsilib/unix/../h/fsi.h", line 118: token not allowed in directive: \
Is there some undocumented flag/option I can use to get past this error? I hope so. Otherwise have to go back to coping lots and lots of code around, converting to Unix text as I do it, preserve the date based on the original file and then copy the binaries back to staging afterwards. On AIX and Linux and Windows they can all build in parallel from the SCM export.

Sorry, I don't know of a way around this exact issue.
Studio compilers will ignore the CR in a CR/LF sequence, but the C compiler does not accept what looks like an escaped CR. (The C++ compiler does accept what was intended as an escaped newline sequence.)
Is the CR actually necessary? I thought that on systems using CR/LF as the default newline would accept LF as a newline as well in source code.
If you have a Studio support contract with Oracle, you can file a request for enhancement (RFE) on the C compiler via your support channel to address your problem.

The datasheet list these as part of the supported classic cards but I would wish to get a confirmation that this is indeed so and what issues I should expect? please advise...

Line cards shouldn't be an issue.  (Don't recall us bumping into any line cards issues with the sup7.)
You may need to upgrade your chassis, though.

  • Modules supported on WS-X6704-10GE line card for WS-C6509-E

We are planning to expand the local network and looking to add 10G line cards on our WS-6509-E. The confusion is over the types of optic modules that these cards support.
Can anyone advice if these line cards support all these three - namely XENPAK, X2 & SFP Plus?
    Thanks

What is the difference between these supervisor (VS-S720-10G-3C or VS-S720-10G-3CXL)
See the "XL" at the end of the part number?   If you get the regular (no "XL"), you'll only get 256k IPv4 routes.  The "XL" will allow you up to 1 million IPv4 routes.
Is these modules will work with c6509E and these supervisor  (VS-S720-10G-3C or VS-S720-10G-3CXL)
Yes and no.  Yes, these supervisor cards will work on the current chassis you've got.  But if you plan to use VSS, then your 6704 line card is incompatible with VSS.
Another thing, don't waste your money.  Firstly, the price of the Sup720 is exactly the same as the price of the newer (and more powerful) Sup2T supervisor card.
And lastly, rumours has it that the 6500 chassis is in it's "last gasp".  Personally, I'm waiting for Cisco to announce the EoS/EoL.
If you want to future-proof your investment, the potential replacement of the venerable 6500E is the 6880-X/6807-X.

  • My iPod Classic is not syncing to my Mac. When I plug it in, it tells me the servers do not support it or something along those lines. It is an iPod Classic 8g, and I bought it used for 30. Any help????

Today I bought an iPod Classic 8gb for 30 quid. When I bought it (used) of of a friends, it played music fine, I could listen to it, and it worked ok. So I go home to reset it so I can put my account on it, and sync it with all my music I have (I want to use it when I hit the gym instead of using my iPhone), but when I plugges it in and restored it, it finished the restoration but NOW it wont let me sync all of my stuff on to it, and the iPod is completely black. I restored it to Factory settings, it shouldnt be doing this???? When I plug it in , I get an error that says
"The iPod software update server could not be contacted. The server does not support this version of iTunes."
Makes me pretty ticked off, like honestly how ******* old is this ******* iPod???
Im also running version 10.9 on my MacBook Pro

Perhaps the reason you haven't had any replies is because there is no such thing as an 8GB iPod Classic.
I suggest that you begin by correctly identifying which iPod you have.

  • Command-line support for encrypted images

    Hi,
Is there any support in asr for performing restores using an encrypted image directly? I can't seem to find anything. It isn't much of a burden I guess to mount the image and then use it (now that I know that, anyway), but it seems like an oversight that asr can't just be given a password directly.
Similarly for hdiutil, it has some support for encrypted images, but some things seem to be missing. At the very least you can't convert an encrypted image into an unencrypted image because convert doesn't understand that.
Are these known issues? Are there plans to add this functionality? Or is it considered unnecessary since there's other ways around it?
    tom

Sorry for my ignorance, when you say you installed every driver in there are you referring to adding them to the driver database or to your bootwim. Also if you cant grab the logs you might be able to get a report based on an unknown system, look in reporting
under "History of a task sequence deployment on a computer" if there was anything recorded before it bombed out you might be able to get some info.
Im still leaning towards a network driver though, can you snap an image of the drivers you have loaded into your preferred bootwim.

I see Cooper has drivers right up to Mavericks - but does Adobe support it? Sorry i have looked everywhere ican and no luck yet.
    Thanks

now. I realize that this might sound strange... but is there anything stopping speedgrade from supporting a setup where we just plug in three USB-track-ball mouses/mice?
I have also heard from the folks over at Palette that they are working on a three-trackball setup that should be compatible with Speedgrade (if their developers cross their fingers hard enough). all
I'm just wondering, because. If all I need is 3 track-balls with maybe 3 infinite turn knobs for the gains and maybe custom-buttons... a fully featured Wave or CP200 seems a bit overkill at that point. Yes yes, build-quality. But do I really need all those buttons and lcd screens? Heck. My desk is pretty much crowded to the brim as it is without another half a square-meter of dedicated control-surface that I'll be using maybe a third or fourth of the time.
