Support for non-native left-click pull-down menus?
Greetings. I've not been able to find a component for AS3.0
in Flash CS3 that would let me do what I would very much like to
do. I don't wish to re-invent the wheel, but I've not seen anywhere
that the wheel exists.
I understand that AIR provides native menus, but I wish to
create an app that does not use the system native menus. I have
several justifications for this desire, the biggest of which is
that I want the menus attached to the app when viewing in MacOS X,
and I do not want the standard MacOS X menus. I do want the
standard menu to be up there as it is for all applications, but I
want my application specific menus connected to the app and NOT
cluttered with the Standard menus and items. My app is a tool for
developmentally and behaviorally disabled children and it needs to
be a) identical on all platforms, b) simple, with only my menu
choices, c) customized with some non-menu items.
My application already has it's own menu bar.
I've considered subjugating the context menu portions of
flash (or trying to) by somehow disabling right-click, enabling
left-click, forcing it to open not where the mouse is, but where I
tell it to (namely left justified with the button in the menu bar,
and immediately beneath it. I'm not even certain if this is
possible, and it's a non-starter anyways if the 'settings'
menu-item cannot be removed.
This seems to me to be a pretty common thing that people
would desire, and I don't understand it's lack.
The idea of writing my own classes to duplicate behavior such
as easily adding child menus to several depths, separators,
animations, keeping track of clicks and mouse-overs and which
child-menus are extended... terrifies me a bit, especially as I
know my programming would not be as efficient and well-thought out
as a system incorporated into the API by the Adobe dev team.

Native menus encompass more than just the Mac application
window and the MS Windows window menu. You can display a native
menu anywhere on the stage using the NativeMenu class display()
method. This sounds like it would do at least most of what you
want.
Also, in AIR, the context menus do not have built-in items.
The context menu will not even display by default.

Mine appear in gray, too; I think that's just the style.
Does this problem occur on all pages? (If it only appears on YouTube or other pages with Flash players, it may be related to keystrokes being captured by the plugin.)
A standard diagnostic for possible interference by add-ons is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [[Backing up your information]]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode ([[Safe Mode]]) using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the Safe Mode dialog, do not check any boxes, just click "Continue in Safe Mode."
If your keyboard shortcuts work correctly, this points to one of your add-ons or custom settings as the problem.

Pagination support for non-Oracle databases?

We are using an IBM iSeries / AS/400 DB2 database right now, and we're planning to use some local lightweight database in the near future as well (probably Cloudscape/Derby or "IBM Everyplace database".)

So, no pagination in the query. As you can see, we have a mechanism in place to dynamically generate a where clause. This is because the user can set filters. The problem is, if our user sets a filter that causes the result set to be significantly smaller, the performance is way better than when he sets no filter at all. We suppose this is because the whole result set is sent to TopLink, regardless of the values of firstResult and maxResults.
We are using TopLink Essentials 2.1-10, by the way.

I'm trying to subclass <tt>DatabasePlatform</tt> to add pagination support for the AS/400 DB2 database of my customer. To be fair, it is not going very well so far.
The first problem is, the query Chris found by googling (Re: Pagination support for non-Oracle databases?), does not work for AS/400s version of DB2. In fact, although it is called "DB2", the database on the AS/400 system is a whole other database than the "normal" DB2 database that runs on Windows and *nix. The AS/400 DB2 simply does not have a "ROW_NEXT" function.
Another option would be to use the <b>row_number() over()</b> mehtod. But, as can be read here, this function is only available from version V5R4 of OS/400. And guess what? We're stuck on V5R3 at this client. (We cannot upgrade, because there's an application in use that's written in Delphi and IBM dropped the Delphi binding from V5R4...)
So I pretty much ran out of options. On the mailing list I linked to above, someone mentions the option to make a sort of stored procedure that generates a row count number. An example of how to do this can be found here. I implemented it, and ended up with this code:

This code does work. However, the performance is not very well. The first page comes relatively fast, but as you browse further in the table, each page comes slower. I assume this is because the counter() method has to be evaluated for each row in the table.
I have to get the performance better and constant. Does anyone have an idea how to optimize this further?

You may have guessed I am a bit exassperated. (See this discussion from yesterday.) (Re: How do I get past the Error: 16 problem?
I am trying to move Adobe Acrobat IX, Photoshop CS6, Photoshop CC and Bridge to a new computer (Mac Pro (late2013), Mavericks 10.9.3) from an older Mac Pro using the same OSX.
I keep getting the error 16 message whether I try to open Acrobat or Photoshop (I have a paid for DVD of CS6). I have uninstalled and re-installed. I have reset permissions on 2 folders ion the system Library. I have either deactivated or signed out of ALL the Adobe products on my old computer. I signed in as 'Root' and tried to open the software. I have re-downloaded all the products except CS6 which I own. I have restarted the computer. I have repair the drive using Disk Utility and Disc Warrior. In short I have tried everything I can think of and that which has been suggested my others on this Forum.

Beryl: support for non power of two textures missing
Is anyone else seeing Beryl crash X with a message about missing support for non-power-of-two textures, and something about no manageable screens being found?
Also, I've gotten something about GL_EXT_texture_from_pixmap not being available at least once, when it is definitely available:

Problem in Safari with pull-down menus
My current version of Safari, Version 7.0.3 (9537.75.14), is the buggiest software I have ever had from any Apple--bar none. The problem is dealing with pull-down menus.
The first such problem is in dealing with pull-down menus on websites. Some of these menus are quite long. On one particular menu the choice that I routinely need is way down near the bottom. Routinely Safari stops scrolling before I can get that far down the pull-down menu.
And, always, when Safari stops scrolling on a pull-down menu on a webpage, it refuses to allow me to scroll down again. To get the webpage's pull-down menu to operate then, I have to re-load the webpage. That is a big problem for one website that I MUST use. This website has three pull-down menus on one webpage. Because Safari always locks up on the first menu, this crucial website is unusable in Safari. I have to use Firefox for this absolutely essential website.
And Safari has trouble with one of its own pull-down menus. This is the PDF menu in the printer window. Not always, but too often, when I pull down that menu to print to PDF, Safari crashes. I have to wait for a dialog box to come up and click "send report to Apple" in order to get Safari to reopen. I don't know how many such reports I have sent to Apple. I get the feeling that Apple is not listening.
Does anyone have any suggestions for these problems? TIALaunch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -
Help! Buggy - Pull down menus not highlighting, more
I've got symptoms!
First, the pull-down menus were not highlighting after clicking
on with mouse. I tried tech tools, it ran into problems about
15 minutes in. I decided to do an Archive Restore.
Now the menus still do not highlight (after all the updates
loaded as well), and the cursor does not switch to specific
cursors when I mouseover links, and when I open a new
program, it reverts to the finder window and I have to click
the program forward from background to start using it.
Any suggestions? Ideas? Anyone else experience this?
I upgraded ram about 4 months ago.

One other thing to look at.....
Open disk utility. Highlight (not select) your HD - not your own files. At the bottom there is something called S.M.A.R.T. If that says anything other than "verified," you have a HD problem.
If the RAM is non-Apple, I would pull it and see if the problems go away. I worked with computers for over 50 years, and still have no idea why some things happen when they do!
Running the archive and install again would not hurt. I do not use tech tools. I do remember that there were some problems with that software a couple of years ago, but I do not know anything about its current status.

I recently have encountered a problem I have never had before.
My dock stays hidden unless I go to where it is on the screen and left click, then it comes up and works fine.
Also, my pull down menus now require me to hold down the left mouse button for them to open up.
I have the newest imac and all the latest updates.
Is there a setting that accidently got turned off? I have all ready tried to repair permissions with no luck.

ChristopherI can unhide and it shows up fine. The dock works without a problem. When it is hidden I have to left click on the area of the screen that it would normally appear in and then it comes ups and stays until I click on an application.
This combined with the fact that my pull down menus no longer work correctly leads me to wonder if somehting went boom after my last mac os update. -
Problem with Inspector pull-down menus
I have this weird problem with DVD Studio Pro all of a sudden. I'm wondering if a recent update might have broken something, and how I can fix it.
The problem is that certain pull-down menus in the Inspector are not responding anymore. Important ones too, like "set target" and "end jump," Remote Control functions, as well as ones I don't use as often like Shape (button shape?). I click on them and nothing happens, although sometimes the default "not set" text disappears. These menus are in the same place in the Inspector, so this may or may not have something to do with it, I have no idea.
At any rate, I can't make a DVD without these functions, and I usually need to make a DVD once or twice a week. Although it has been two weeks since I last used it.
I am almost positive that nothing has changed with my system since I used it last, besides Apple Software Updates.
Version 2.0.5, OSX Tiger. I know, time to upgrade, but I don't control the budget.Just the Inspector, i haven't found any other problems.
Quicktime was updated a few days before the problem started. On May 27th I ran the updates for Quicktime 7.4.5, ProKit 4.5, iTunes 7.6.2, and Safari 3.1.1. I noticed the problem with the DVDSP Inspectors the next time I ran the program on May 29.
I understand the ProKit is for a later version so I'm a bit mystified as to why I was offered the update, however I've installed previous ProKit updates without any problems.
A clean install will certainly be my next step. But I have to wait for a lull in real work activity before I can get into that. Luckily I've remembered that I can accomplish a lot of what I needed the inspector for under the Connections tab, so it's a little less urgent now.
I'm usually pretty careful about running updates, and I usually ignore them for a few weeks (or longer) before I run the updates so I can monitor the internet for other people's disasters. But I got lazy this time. Maybe there are not too many DVDSP v2 installations out there. And maybe I need to increase the pressure on my company to update my software!
On that note, this experience is helping my case with convincing them to replace one of the old Avids with a new FCS suite, so it might become a moot point. Will the license allow me to operate DVDSP4 on a different machine or does it have to stay on the main suite, if we go that way? We like to process the output on another box, so the editors can get on with the next project. -
I have been having a lot of trouble with Safari Version 7.0.2 (9537.74.9) since upgrading to 10.9.2. One such problem is with pull-down menus in websites. (This is as distinguished from the pull-down menus of Safari itself.) Many websites have pull-down menus. These website menus do not work effectively in Mavericks. For example, one website that is very important to me has a menu that is longer than the height of my monitor. And the selections that I almost always need are at the bottom of that menu. When I scroll down that menu, the menu proceeds too fast, and I almost always overshoot the selection that I want. At that point, then, Safari stops the operation of the pull-down menu, and I have to reload the whole page.
Safari gets worse. Often I try to print a webpage to PDF. When I pull down the "PDF" menu in the print window, I have to be very, very careful to select the exact selection "save as PDF." If I don't, then Safari crashes, and I get a dialog box asking me if I want the OS to send a notice to Apple. I click "Yes." I wish the button said, "Yes, of course, right now, without delay," but it does not. And then I have to wait for Safari to start up again.

You have the last version of Safari that will work with OS X 10.2.x. You might want to give Firefox a try. -
Education Edge -- Firefox update, 6.0.2, disables all the pull-down menus
We use Education Edge software to manage attendance, grades, etc. at our school. The new Firefox update, 6.0.2, disables all the pull-down menus. They show up, but the fields are all empty. Fix? Is there a way to revert to the previous version which worked fine?
I have this problem on my dual monitor system. I found a solution that works. Click Start, Run, sysdm.cpl
In the resulting System Properties window, click the Advanced tab, then click settings under Performance. You will have one of four radio buttons enabled. Here what I did. I enabled "Adjust for For Best Appearance" and clicked apply. I then unchecked the box "Show Shadow under windows" and clicked apply again. Problem solved. -
Making pull down menus and file open dialogs speak
Hi,
I'm trying to create some applications that include speech
assistance for the visually impaired. there are two things that are
causing problems:
1. I can't make the file open dialog boxes speak. I would
like to emulate the behavior of third party screen reader
applications that speak the identites of GUI elements as the user
tabs through them. I am able to do this for custom dialogs made
with the MUI Xtra by putting voiceSpeak commands in the callback
handler so that as each widget gets focus during tabbing, it speaks
its identity. But this doesn't appear to be possible with file open
dialogs created with FileXtra.
2. I have created pull down menus using installMenu. This
works great, but I would like the user to be able to navigate these
menus using the arrow keys, and have each menu item speak as it
navigated to.
If anyone has any ideas about how to accomplish these things
in D11, I would be very grateful.

The entire webpage seems empty and colorless. When I roll over a square or something that is empty, I get the "hand" as if there is something in there that I should click on. All the pull down menus are transparent and hard to read against the background. I tried the same web site on IE and everything is good. It seems as if half of the Browser is loaded. The updates had no affect. My email site is a drab and dreary place that I use the Mac email instead. I remember on my old HP with Firefox it was great. And so was Thunderbird. What can I do??

I cannot find the music panel in PE13 64 bit. That term is specifically used in the manual. I have an Audio dialog box, but no Music Panel. I wanted to try SmartSounds, but I can't get at them because I can't find the Music Panel. The manual tells me
