Support for older Sony camcorder

Hello. I have iMovie '09 on my new iMac. I just acquired an older Sony DCR-VX1000 camcorder that uses Mini DV tapes. I need to invest in new batteries, a charger, a DV cable, and a repair before actually using this camcorder but I wanted to know before I did.......Will iMovie support this camcorder? Will I have any other issues? Thanks in advance for any response.

You just need to know what kind of Firewire port you have on your iMac.
Older iMacs will have Firewire 400. You need a 6 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable to connect your camera.
If you have a newer iMac, you may have a Firewire 800 port. In this case, you need a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable.
Click /About This Mac/More Info.../Firewire (under the hardware list). If it says Firewire Bus...Maximum Speed up to 800 Mb/S, that is Firewire 800. If max is 400Mb/S or so, that is FW400.

HT6055 Request to Apple: restore support for older codecs

I used Quicktime extensively for my research before upgrading to Mavericks, and now that these older codecs have been removed, none of my experimental videos taken over the past 5 years will play in Quicktime. This is extremely disappointing.
I'd like to gather as much user support as possible to request that Apple restore support for these older codecs.
PLEASE RESPOND ON THIS THREAD BY ADDING YOUR REQUEST FOR APPLE TO RESTORE SUPPORT FOR OLDER CODECS.
FYI, my video files were .avi format, recorded by a Nikon D300s and a Zeiss EVO 55 scanning electron microscope.

Some things can be converted without transforming the data. I have data in Excel spreadsheets that is identical to the data in the Lotus Symphony spreadsheets in which I entered the data in 1986. Converting video does involve data transformation which is undesirable unless it comes to a point where it is unavoidable. Speaking as a research scientist, one is obligated to try to preserve original data to a reasonable extent. In this case the video is not "dead". It can still be played. It's just Apple's behavior that anything older than about 4 years is old-fashioned and to be forgotten that's mandating stepping outside Apple software to do so. Yes, it would be a good idea to convert so when future upgrades mean no old codecs will play at least the data are available to some degree. I still would not get rid of the old files since they are the original data, and if the person spends 30 seconds installing VLC player they can still view the original data for another 10 years at least (if they keep the computer that long -- my computer is 12 years old and I can still run applications on it dating from the early 1990s).
By the way, you can still buy VHS players. I agree they will not be around forever, and if it's a family video you want to play 20 years from now then you may as well convert it now, but then that's not research evidence.
Optical media are dead at Apple, but still extensively used outside Apple. I agree in 20 years it will be hard to find a DVD player but visit right now any store selling movies or music, or a public library, and optical media are still around. Apple can force the issue where their hardware is involved, especially as regards to installing Apple software, and of course by pushing online media sales (if you buy from the iTunes Store, which I don't).

Unfortunately this is a user forum, so no-one can answer that one for you. You can use the feedback option in aperture to request it though. More than likely it wont come until Canon or Nikon release some more DSLRs, which is usually what prompts an update. For what it's worth you can use the Adobe DNG converter which will convert the sony .arw file into a .dng file that Aperture can read. It is another step to your workflow but you can do it.

CSS3 support for older browsers

It's pretty clear now that CSS3 is a Rubicon for web browsers and that either the browser is capable of interpreting the rules or it is not. Having said that, is there a "patch" of some sort that can be painlessly added to the CSS to allow support for, say, IE8?

I'm with Mark. Build to the level of your main target audience -- not the fewer than 5% who insist on using outdated browsers.
I have experimented with PIE and other so called "workaround" scripts for IE with less than stellar results. Also , IE Filters have some nasty side effects -- like disabling clearType which makes text look really terrible. I view these "workarounds" as mainly counterproductive.
Going forward, I'm adding an IE8 End Of Life message inside a conditional comment in all my projects now. That way people know up front that their browser sucks. The ball is then in their court whether or not to do anything about it.
We still have an XP computer at home that hubby doesn't want to part with. So the only IE browsers he can use are 7 & 8. That said, his favorite browsers are the latest versions of FF and Chrome which he uses regularly on XP. Just because some people have an older operating system doesn't necessarily mean they have to use inferior browsers.
Unless it's adversely effecting your content or usability, I don't think you should do cartwheels to support the few remaining IE7 and IE8 users. It's better for everyone if we ween them off the bad browsers as soon we can.

Recommendations for HD Sony camcorder

I have an ancient analog Sony camcorder (maybe 10 years old) as well as a HD model (maybe 4 years old) and now, I'm in the market for a better quality camcorder. I want to stay with Sony because a friend of mine works at Sony and I can get accessories and out of warranty repairs at a family and friends discount. I'm looking for something maybe in the $800 dollar range - not exactly pro, but more than a regular rinky ** camcorder, I'd prefer something where you can load the tape from the top without having to unhook the camcorder from the tripod. I will be using the camcorder with FCP and plan to buy it sometime next year, like around March. Any recommendations?

As you already have 2 cameras that are tape based, stay with tape, look at the HVR range of Sony camera. Stay very far away from AVCHD or HDD based cameras. If you want you can use the hard drive external recorder made by Sony.
The problem with AVCHD is that it does not work well with FCP, imovie yes.
Archiving is a huge problem. Tape is cheap, use and store. Also with AVCHD space is a problem, yes it records a couple of hours, but once the drive is full what are you going to do.
The more expensive Z1/V1 Sony HDV cameras are side loaders. Loading from below is a very small price to pay, on the level as manual window winders in my car, not powered, but much cheaper.
It takes only a few seconds to eject and reload. So for me this is such a non issue.
AVCHD compresses the footage and is not really of much use professionally.

Support for older Crystal Reports .rpt files in BOE XI 3.1

Does anyone know how far back you can go with Crystal Reports objects in BOE XI 3.1? In other words, what's the oldest version of Crystal .rpts that are supported in BOE XI 3.1? Can you run Crystal Reports 9 .rpt files? I'm trying to keep from having to update around 4-5 thousand older .rpts files for an upgrade to BOE XI 3.1.
If we have to do a mass upgrade to CR 2008, what's the best way to do that?

Support for older Solaris?

Hello,
Looking at the specs for the newer Sun boxes coming out, they all say that the minimum supported OS is Solaris 10.
Is it Sun's intent to discontinue the ability to run older versions (8/9) on the newer hardware?

Some of the newer Sun systems like the x64 X4100 for example have an entirely new architecture than that which the earlier versions of Solaris was developed for, If you use this link you can see the supported versions of Solaris for that system:

Ridiculous lack of support for older iPod accessories

After thoroughly enjoying my iPod mini through 4 years and two batteries, I decided it was time to finally upgrade to a nano. I'm starting to think that was a big mistake. Despite an amazing screen, great functionality, and excellent storage capacity, the brand may forever be tarnished now by the fact that my new iPod did not work properly with any iPod accessory I owned. Apparently, everything I owned used firewire based charging, and Apple has dropped support of this capacity. This means my neither my $200 iPod speakers nor my $200 car integration will charge my new iPod. I used to think the iPod was an icon of the industry. I used to feel confident buying accessories, knowing they would integrate seemlessly with my iPod. Now I feel like the iPod is just another scam, with Apple's only interest being to make a buck. I will definitely never purchase another iPod accessory again, and will probably not purchase or recommend an iPod to anyone unless this problem is fully resolved.

Acrobat X support for older version plug-ins

Hi,
        We have some plug-ins, which were created for acrobat version 7, later we upgraded them to support acrobat 8, and 9 also.
         Now with the release of acrobat X, we want to support this latest version also, is it possible to support all the versions(acrobat 7 through acrobat X)?
        and if it is possible, for doing so, what additional changes required from implementation/development point fo view.

Adobe no longer supports Acrobat 7 - so I can't comment on that.
However, building a plugin FOR WINDOWS - that works on Acrobat 8-X is no problem. You simply need to use the Acrobat 8 SDK and be aware that you can't use any newer APIs.
On the Mac, however, it's a problem due to changes in their architecture with 8->9. Acrobat 9 & X share the same plugins.

Support for older System (9.x)?

I have 2 older G4 Macintosh machines. They are currently running Mac OS 10.3 (I think) and can be switched to boot from Mac OS 9.x. They are older machines my children use.
Is there any problems upgrading these machines to 10.5? Will these machines still be able to run older Mac 9.x programs (mostly a few games)?

Apparently not. After I installed Leopard at least over 15 grand in software became obsolete. I wrote to the guy I respect most when it comes to Macs, David Pogue, whose review in the NYTs convinced me to shift. I asked him why the end of OS 9 wasn't mentioned.

Direct x 12 support for older programs

I want to know if the new API will support, or improve in any aspect, programs that are using older API's such as Directx 9c - 11.2.
alternatively, will computers forced to use hybrid/switchable graphics be able to use the up coming API? IE AMD/Intel graphics systems.

Hi Tomi,
You cannot directly save the TestStand 3.0 sequences to 1.0. TestStand can save formats upto two versions previous to the current version. So TestStand 3.0 will the sequence into either 2.0.1 or 2.0 version.
However if you have TestStand 2.0 on your machine, then you can open this TestStand 2.0 sequence and save it as TestStand 1.0 sequence.
