Surround 5.1, HELP!

So i'm about to start a little project recording some audio for film on Logic Pro. Just before i start though.
I just want to check can i plug my MacBook into my dvd player through ADAT or SPDIF for 5.1?
I'm not looking for quality sound and being directed to using 5.1 studio monitors. I just want to use my dvd player speakers for referencing.
Thanks!

Just adding, the dvd player i have is this one, i'm looking to connect via the 'optical in' port.

  • In need of some SURROUND 5.1 help...

    Hello all.
Still on Logic 7. Haven't made the jump.
Wanting to write and monitor in 5.1 for television. Have never done this in Logic. We use Motu 24 i/o boxes. Want to set the digital outs as my 5.1 outs going into Pro Tools on another machine, then have Pro Tools come up on the board in 5.1.
    Here's the problem:
The room is set up, but Logic is not. When I go to the Preferences>Audio>Surround page, I cannot select outputs higher than 32. Problem is, my digital outs are 33-48. Is this a limitation in Logic 7? I went to the audio configuration page, and my outs are all available. If I select an instrument or audio track, I can send them out stereo from 33-48, but the preferences>audio>surround page does not allow this.
Any ideas? Am I missing a page somewhere that enables these outs? Is it in the environment?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated on this one. I have been at it for a while without a solution.
    Many thanks,
    ETMi

    Hi Mark,
Make sure your outputs in the Motu setup are all active all the way to channels 48.
Otherwise, I suggest you conform to the standard that most other studios use, and use outputs 1-8 as your main outputs.
Output 1-6 can be the surround, and 7+8 can be a stereo output.
That is, if you cannot get the digital outputs to work.
    Cheers

  • Surround Surround Surround - 5.1 help needed

I have been ripping MY! DVDs into an external HD to access in front row. The Mac mini is Optical Out to a 5.1 Surround system that supports ac3. I am using handbrake to rip the dvd's with the options apple says the new Quicktime will support. When I check the audio under movie properties it shows only 2 channels. I can download a trailer and see that the video is 5.1 but not mine. Can anyone help me out?

I searched online for ac3 decoding component for intel processor and found only one such thing (aforementioned link). However, installing it just causes QT to quit on playback. This is what I was referring when I asked if anyone else was able to use this component successfully.
I'm using the A52/AC3 v1.7 found at this URL: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/A52Codec.shtml
Not sure if this is the same universal binary you linked or an different version. In this case the A52 component goes in the Library > Audio > Plug-ins > Component folder and an AC3 movie component goes in the QT folder.
My gripe is that .avis with 5.1 AC3 audio plays back in VLC, giving stereo output on my computer speakers. But the same .avi file, does not produce any sound in QT!
Here is the URL for the sample clip I made during tests earlier today: http://homepage.mac.com/jrwalker4/.Public/Test.mov
You can try to open it directly in QT 7 or download the movie file from my Public DotMac account. It plays in stereo/Dolby PL2 in QT using the above mentioned A52/AC3 components. It also plays in the DivX Player v1.0.3 in the same manner. However, the file will not play in VLC.
Here is the URL of AC3 file soundtrack used to make the clip: http://homepage.mac.com/jrwalker4/.Public/Test.AC3
(Note: this file does not "quick start" in QT, so if you use the "Open URL" option, allow time for the entire file to download.) Strangely enough, this file was created by A-Pack and plays in VLC correctly using the Dolby Digital decoder. It also plays in A-Pack and QT but only in the Stereo/Dobly PL2 modes noted above and will not play in the DivX Player at all.
Very strange. Can only assume that merging the audio and video tracks causes some sort of rewrite of file internals that make or break compatibility with the different players. You are welcome to try the files and see how they work on your system. If you do, let me know which AC3 components/players you try and their results in terms of playability.

  • ITunes, Mac Mini and 5.1 Surround - No Joy!

    Greetings,
I'm having problems with getting 5.1 Surround Sound out of my Mac Mini with iTunes.
    Here is my hardware setup:
Mac Mini (Mid 2010 model, has built in HDMI output, running OS X Lion 10.7.1 and latest iTunes version)
    Pioneer VSX-1121-K Amplifier
    Panasonic TV
I've got the Mac Mini connected to the Amp with HDMI, and I've also tried a digital audio cable to the amp.
I'm trying to play a movie (The "Art of Flight" by Travis Rice... GREAT movie!) that I purchased in HD from the iTunes store.
When I look at the "info" about the movie in iTunes, it states that it does have Dolby Digital 5.1 audio
When I play the movie in iTunes, with Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> English (Stereo Audio) in plays fine.
When I change Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> to English (Surround Audio), the movie freezes and will not play.
When I play the movie directly in Quicktime Player, I can't find any way to set the audio output options from within Quicktime player.
I've tried using both HDMI and Digital Audio out in the Sound Preferences Panel
I've tried using the Audio Midi Setup program in Utilities to configure both the Built-In output, and the HDMI output.
I've set both the Built-in Audio Output and the HDMI to "Encoded Audio".
In Audio Midi Setup, when I go into "Configure Speakers..." button, select "Multichannel", I see "Stereo" selected in the drop down box.  But when I click on the drop down box, the options for "5.1 Surround", "7.1 Surround", etc are all greyed out.
No matter what I try, I get stereo output, instead of surround sound.
    Help??

Well, a bit more experimentation and I have some additional thoughts.
I read the discussion https://discussions.apple.com/message/2530573#2530573 here.
I installed Perian, didn't seem to change anything.
    I read the discussion http://geekwithfamily.com/2007/07/05/home-theater/howto-5-easy-steps-to-output-d olby-digital-from-quicktime-player/ here.
When I go into Audio Midi Setup it still says the output is Stereo only.  BUT, when I play the movie in Quicktime now, I can hear sound coming out of my rear surround channels now.  The receiver still indicates it only has stereo output enabled.  But it does sound like I'm getting stereo output.
Still not clear why in iTunes they have the option for Controls -> Audio & Subtitles -> to English (Surround Audio), but when that is selected the movie won't play at all.  Bug in iTunes, or elsewhere in the system?  I don't know...

  • CMSS 3D Stereo Surround Not working anymore?

I got an Soundblaster xi-fi Xtreme Audio Pci Express, and Logitech X 530/540?(notsure probably 540) 5. speakerset.
On my windows XP system I had the CMSS Stereo surround option on @ 50% Envelopment. So that would result in the same sound from my front speakers?being copied to my rear speakers.
Now my Windows XP system dri've died,?And now I have the same setup at windows 7. But my rear speakers don't give sound at all with CMSS Stereo surround....
I tested with mp3 music as I?always test it like that. Not sure if it's different in movies/games.
I?Installed this driver for windows 7: ( I think exactly the same as I installed on XP)
    http://support.creative.com/download...ownloadId=0962
Strange thing is nothing seems to change in the sound wether I enable CMSS (XPAND? or surround)?or not.
How do I make CMSS Stereo surround function like it once did?
    Thanks.

I'm having the exact same issue with IWNdows 7 and no matter what changes I make, it doens't alter the sound or the surround effects.
    Help?

  • Please help or I'm going back to onboard so

My Mic will not work. I just tested on my onboard sound card and it works. I disabled my onboard sound card. I made sure all settings were set SB audigy 2 ZS card. It is not muted. Volume is turned all the way up. I still get nothing but a whining noise through all my sattelite speakers. Did the channels get switched somehow? My speakers and mic are plugged into the correct places. So whats the deal? The only reason I bought this card is so I can use my Mic and have 5. surround. Please help me. I just spent all day going through settings and rearranging wires. Oh yeah, for some reason when I turn the Mic boost on the whining noise gets louder.Message Edited by yosteamer on 0-22-2005 2:55 AM

contact technical support, they respond fairly quickly, you probably have a better chance of solving your problem with them than here in the forums.

  • When song played with surround sound, vocals removed! :O

hi all, hope you can help.
first of all, why any1 would want to play music thats recorded/editted and mixed using 2 channels in surround sound is beyond me, but some people do, or even may do it accidentally.
i finished editting some songs the other day and sent them over to the guy putting them out, 1 song has the main vocal completely centered, no panning whatsoever, sounds fine through speakers/headphones, but if surround is activated, the vocals completely dissapear.
i think this has something to do with surround not playing what is mixed dead centered, but was wondering 1. why? and 2. if theres anything i can do as a quick fix without having to mess with the song too much, and 3. how would i avoid this in the future, without having to duplicate the track and pan each 25 each way?
    :S
    thanks for reading,
    andy

thanks, maybe if i new abit more about surround that would help, i actually managed to recreate what was happening by oing into the mixer and clickin sum to mono on the vocals tracks (what does "summed" means in this context?).
ive come to the conclusion that whoever plays the tracks in surround isnt going to hear the main vocal, but i am really baffled  by this as, as im sure you guys now how useful the centre channel remover function thingy for removing lead vocals, which suggests to me that a lot of music has the lead vocal completely centered, yet ive never heard any other song in surround that has had the lead vocal completely removed (admittedly if you mute the music track the vocal is there very, VERY slightly, but the difference is astonishing, i wish i could demonstrate it.
does any1 have any examples of a song which is effected in a similar way? or have you guys noticed this with your work (also, i recorded an entire album with aud 1.5 with lots of centered lead vocals and never had this problem).
thanks for llistening to me blab on.
maybe il never get my head round it.

  • Importing Alg Audio & Video with distorted audio, how to improve sound now.

Been using iMovie & Quicktime to import Analog A/V. This last project I imported the movie into iMovie. The sound has lots of echo and distortion. Can someone tell me what would be the best iLife program to use for audio correction.
Can you also help me with a jump start on some of the best quick corrections for distorted sound, echo & hiss. I would like to restore the audio as best as I can with the iLife programs.
For the record I am also interested in turning stereo audio into surround sound.
Help for my rookie self would be much appreciated as I am currently in a tight time crunch.
    Many thanks.

  • DVD's in DTS-ES from Audigy 4

I want to use the optical out on the front of the external unit in conjunction with an external AV/amplifier that has a DTS encoder in it. The PCI card is plugged in with the power cable on it. The external Audigy unit is plugged in and seems to have power. Now what? I'm running WinDVD 8, and have goofed around with Creative's settings, WinDVD's settings and my computers device settings for 5 hours now and have zero sound, let alone surround. Any help would be nice.Message Edited by MWinzeler on 2-0-200606:3 PM

  • Color correct CMYK Image with RGB Image

    1. anybody please tell me is it possible to perform color correction in CMYK image with RGB reference image
    2. how to do that i mean what are the details i have to watch for?
    ADVANCE THANKS

Your match using my color profile(similar to North American General Purpose) would be 29c 100m 83y 35k. Convert a sample swatch, using your color workflow/profile.
Some RGB colors won't convert well to cmyk (eg 0R 255B 0G). In that case your problem is not using a RGB reference image for CMYK color correction, but the cropped color gamut in the color conversion itself.
In those cases of saturated RGB colors you may have to do some handtoning to surrounding colors, to help create the illusion of RGB saturation to the troublesome color you are matching.

  • 5.1 monitors

    Hi all.
I'm getting really excited to start working with the new Final Cut Studio, especially Soundtrack Pro 2!!
So in regards to the 5.1 monitors what can I use? Do I need to get a specialized piece of hardware or can I use something like the Logitech Z-5500 speakers? I'm not doing features just small stuff for now. I'm guessing that the hardware or the speakers would hook up to the optical port on the G5? Thanks for any help.
    1.8Ghz Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi,
I also want to know if speakers like the Z-5500 will work in soundtrack pro in full 5.1 surround, and how to set it up. I have these speakers. Do you need additional hardware to do 5.1 surround? Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    Ben

  • Rear Speakers not functioning properly on X-Fi and Audig

Hello, I'm having an issue with my rear speakers. When I do a channel test, the rear outputs comes out the front speakers. It says "rear left, rear right" from the respected speakers in the front.
There is no sound that comes from the rear speakers unless I upmix it CMSS2 on the Audigy 2 and Stereo Surround on the X-Fi. When I do a channel test in this mode, it says "front right, rear right" from the right set of speakers and "front left, rear left" from the left set of speakers. There is no seperation of the individual speakers.
I also have this same issue with the output from rear speakers not functioning when I plug it into the onboard sound card and do a channel test. It's not the speakers because when I switch the green and black plugs in the soundcard, the rears work when plugged into the front output of the soundcard, so the the speakers are fine. I've even plugged headphones into the rear jack and get the same results.
    Here's my computer specs:
    Gigabyte GA-8NSLI ROYAL
    Pentium 4 640
    2xGB Patriot DDR2 700
    XFX 6800GT
SB Audigy 2 and SB X-Fi XtremeMusic(currently the X-Fi is installed)
    Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 500
    2xMaxtor DiamondMax0 300GB RAID
    2xMaxtor DiamondMax0 300GB
    Plextor PX-740A
    Lite-On LTR-4025S
    Kilpsch ProMedia 5.
I've tried disabling the TV card and the on-board audio, and that doesn't fix the problem. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers numerous times without any luck. It's driving me crazy not being able to play games or watch movies without true 5. surround. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    I have the same problem.
I have a set of Logitech Z-5300s hooked up to a creative DDTS-00, and the X-Fi Platinum breakout box attached to the DDTS-00 via coax.
Front right is also rear right, and front left is also rear left.
There are other threads which have touched on the issue of digital streams like Dolby and DTS not being output in 5. surround (which is a bummer).
BUT, I am trying to do this using CMSS...is this not possible? I dont understand why CMSS wouldn't work over a digital connection, it's one of the selling features of the card!
Is the CMSS stero xpand option doable using the coax outputing to the DDTS-00? It would be really lame if it couldn't seeing as I upgraded from my onboard Soundstorm (which could do surround) to experience higher fidelity music while in surround sound...Message Edited by Ashram on 2-3-2005 04:4 AM

  • Surround Sound Help

    Hello all!
Always fancied doing some surround sound editing - and now I can in FCP X - but how?
What do I need to edit Surround sound in Final Cut Pro X on my Mac Mini? I want to mix the surround sound 'on the fly' so that I can hear how it will sound - and play with the postioning of sound / music etc. Any help on this matter would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

My iMac is on the way so I've been also thinking about getting a good surround sound system to accompany this beautiful computer. Since I don't have an A/V receiver I'd need a system with optical in and decoding capabilities for DD and DTS. I've had my eye for a while now on Logitech Z-5500 Digital, but they're quite old. Also, I'm aware of the stereo sound when connected with digital cable from non-multichannel sources like MP3's, but if there's a feature like Dolby Pro Logic or DTS Neo:6 on a speaker system, will there be sound rear speakers too?
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Connecting IPOD video to surround sound HELP PLEASE!

    Hi!
I have been trying to connect my ipod to my surrond sound system at home, but everytime I plug it in all it says is "Do not disconnect" and won't let me go to my menu to play songs. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

I tried that but it didn't work... I need to get my ipod to not say "do not disconnect" in order to play from the menu.... does that make sense? It's plugged in correctly and is a brand new ipod so I'm not sure why it isn't working. I called apple, but since my surround sound is an RCA and not an apple device they can't help me....

  • Surround sound speakers don't work help

    I recently bought a new sony bravia t.v. and a sony all in one blu-ray disc/dvd all in one home theater system. We cannot get the surround sound speakers to work watching regular television. Can anyone help solve this problem? Any help is appreciated, Thanks, Ken Please write to {Removed per Forum Guidelines}

JUANGONZ is correct. The easiest way to get the surround is to take an optical cable from the cable box to the input on the back of the Sony receiver. You will have to change the input on the Sony to digital in. Make sure you have Dolby Digital enabled on the cable box settings. Also important is that most standard definition content is broadcast in stereo, usually only high definition is broadcast in 5.1 surround.
If you can stop in at your local Best Buy, I am sure they would be happy to show you on a display unit, or setup an appointment to have a Geek Squad Installer connect your components if you would like.
