Surround sound headphone solution for iMac in Bootcamp/Windows 7

Hi all
I have a 27" iMac which, unfortunately, in Windows, outputs only in stereo (I have NO idea why).  It has no PCI option that I aware of.
I like to game in Windows 7 (dual booted) and have in my possession:
Creative X-Fi USB 5.1 soundcard (http://us.store.creative.com/Sound-Blaster-XFi-Surround-5.1/M/B0017QQQAE.htm);
Turtle Beach Earforce DSS;
AKG K271 Studio headphones.
I am using the CMSS-3D software with the X-Fi and getting okay results.  I have also tried plugging in the Earforce DSS via the optical out on the X-Fi (with CMSS-3D off) and have two different results:
Movies/DVDs, etc. the Earforce clicks into Dolby Digital mode;
Games (Dead Space, Metro 2033, etc.), I get only the Pro Logic light coming on.
I can't tell much difference between CMSS-3D and the Pro Logic on the Earforce so am debating getting rid of them both (not the headphones, I use them for music) and going for another solution, as I don't think I can really get a very good performance from these.  I previously owned Astro Mixamp and A40 headset and thought they sounded fantastic on 360, really helped on Battlefield Bad Company 2, etc.  What I am using now just doesn't seem to measure up.
So, any thoughts?  Logitech G35?  One of the Sennheiser ones?
Cheers!
Steve

I have a G35 and the surround works great in Windows 7 under Boot Camp.  The headphones will also work in a basic way with OS X, but you'll only get stereo since there is no Mac version of the software

Has anyone here tried surround sound headphones with the SPDIF output on an nForce mobo? If so, how do they work with games?

I'd have to say the general answer to your question is no.
Setting the panel to headphones is supposed to cause Windows to do something to the output of the sound.  I can't perceive any difference when I shift the setting about.  I've begun to wonder if the setting is only applicable to analog sound cards.
Furthermore an external DSP is required to use S/PDIF.  At minimum you need a DAC to convert the digital signal back into analog.  You also have to remember that any DD sound output from the S/PDIF must be decoded before it goes to the DAC.  Since it appears that the nForce encodes any sound that passes through it, this too would make a DSP required.
I should have been a bit clearer on the external DSP. I realize a DD decoder is necessary when using the SPDIF output, but a DSP for additional HRTF would not necessarily be needed (if I'm understanding this correctly).
    Quote
The adjustment of these settings along side Pro Logic tend to create the necessary HRTF output through headphones.  That's for DD content any ways.  3D Sound API's acheive their goal by processing before output through the S/PDIF or analog outs.
But is the 3D Sound API's sound processing "preserved" when encoded to Dolby Digital? In other words, does the EAX and/or A3D positional infomation remain after it is encoded to DD?

One person who recently listened to a DVD-A song on my rig said the following afterwards, "Wow, the sound felt like it was in the back of my head."
Which I suppose is the result you're looking for.
Yes, exactly! But for games  as well as DVDs?
    Good info Ryu! Thanks!!

  • X-fi and surround sound headphones

I'm interested in buying the X-Fi XtremeMusic, but I've been told that it's not good with surround sound headphones. I'm using Genius 5.1 headphones. They do have a switch that enables me to only use 2.1 if I want.
Will the X-Fi work with these?

I don't see why not. They would probably need bass redirection enabled with the +15dB subwoofer boost as one way to get correct channel volumes. This very long thread:

might give you some useful insights.
Did whoever told you they weren't good tell you anything about why or in what way?

  • Recommend a headphones solution for me!

I'm a new iPhone 3G owner and am looking for the cleanest, lowest profile, best quality, money-is-no-object, wireless/bluetooth headphone solution for purposes of listening to music in stereo. Suggestions?

You can buy a stereo bluetooth headset that has an adaptor, I have one.
The iPhone supports connecting to hands free car kits and headsets via bluetooth.

  • Recording a surround sound cd/dvd for home theater

I am trying to burn a 5.1 surround sound cd/dvd with different audio in each channel.  I have created the file without any problems and it will play on my computer in surround sound.  When I burn the cd/dvd (I have tried both) all of the audio plays in all channels. How do I burn the file onto a disc so that it will play correctly as surround sound in my home theater?

I know this question was asked ages ago, but I'm sure others are probably looking for an answer too (as I was over a year ago, when I started working with Audition 3).
In my experience, there is no way to directly export a functional 5.1 file from Audition.  You can surround mix a file using the surround panner, but you can't export in the file format used by most home theater systems (.ac3 - Dolby Surround Sound).  My solution was to track down a standalone encoder, although there may be pugins available to allow Audition to do this.  After surround mixing, I export to 5 mono wav files and then drop them into this absolutely ancient program called Soft Encode, which creates a single, interleaved .ac3 file out of my source files.  Then, I take the .ac3 file, create a blank video the same length, and use my video editor to burn them to a DVD.
From what my research turned up, the reason Audition does not have the capability to export in .ac3 is because of the expense of licensing with Dolby.  I would love to see a more sophisticated surround panner in AA4, as well as the ability to natively export .ac3 files, but by the same token, I don't want to see a skyrocketing price, so I'm waiting to see what happens!

  • How do I turn on surround sound (5.1) for all my iTunes items?

In iTunes, while a video is playing, I can go to Controls/Audio and Subtitles and select English (Surround Audio). This allows the sound to work with my 5.1 Dolby Digital audio setup.
It looks, though, like the only way to turn this on is to actually be playing the video. I have gone into iTunes and selected a whole set of videos, then selected the surround sound - but that didn't work. As soon as I played a video I hadn't played before, it was back to stereo, and I had to manually make the selection again. (Now, once I make the selection it sticks; I don't have to do it again. But, I still have to do it for each individual video.)
How can I "turn on" surround sound for all items that have it?

    1. Double-click the Home button and swipe Task Bar to the right
    2. Check the volume and mute settings

  • Ideal Surround Sound Mixing Levels for Music

    Hi all,
When using Soundtrack Pro and you mix in Surround sound there are little dots by each speaker and there are more dots for how louder you want the sound to be by that speaker.
My earlier attempts at surround sound have finally worked but the music is so low in the rear speakers that you'd never hear it unless you put your ear to the speaker. Then again I don't want to up it too loud either.
Is there anyone that's familiar with professional audio editing that have any suggestions on typical ideal levels (in dots) by each speaker so that the music really fills the room?

  • Airport Extreme with NTFS external HD solutions for both Mac and Windows

I recently bought an apple extreme when friends who have them say you can shared both printers and external harddrives really easily. However, it seems I am unable to share my many NTFS harddrives. I see after searching forums that it does not support NTFS but does FAT32.
One day I will convert all my home laptops to mac's but at the moment I am using XP and Vista for the time being so converting them to the apple format is not an option.
The problem i have is that if I convert them to FAT32 then I will only be be to have ISO's that are less than 2gig in size, an only be able to format up to 30 gig. If I have a 500 gig disk I'll be left with 470 gig of wasted space that cannot be used.
Can anyone suggest a good solution for me? perhaps someone has worked out how to format FAT32 greater than 30gb. or perhaps there is another disk format that would be better to use and can be read/write from XP/Vista PC as well as being recognised by Airport extreme. Any help would be good as I am reluctant to get a refund on it, but will have to if I can get it to work with large files/partitions.

I think I answered my own question. I found this on the web:
    http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
Seems to suggest that using this third party exe to format it instead of windows inbuilt one will allow for partitions greater than 32GB. So this looks the way to go. And the 2GB limit per file is just for FAT16 not FAT32 apparently, but even if it is I only have a few iso/video files bigger than 2 gig so will just use a splitter on them.
Hope this is useful to someone else

  • Is there a solution for Digital Persona and Windows 10 and Edge or Google

I upgarded to windows 10 and now my digital persona does not work.  Is there a solution for Microsoft Edge?  If not is there a solution for google?  I can make google my defult browser but it does not work there either?

We upgraded one laptop at home and I wasn't very surprised to find out that the backup / imaging program we were using on Windows 7 (Backup Exec System Recovery) stopped working.  It's a nice program that I've been using for years - creates a base image then incrementals on a schedule.  Allows for simple full bare metal recovery or for file recovery by mounting an image inside the program.
Have any of you tested anything similar in Windows 10?

  • Looking for a headphones solution for 5th generation iPod

So my headphone jack no longer works (technical problem). As a result I need headphones that plug in via the dock connector instead.
A little over a year ago I bought (what I think was) a remote/headphones combo device that solved my problem. The remote plugged into the iPod, and then the headphones plugged into the remote. Problem solved.
I have now lost this device, and whenever I ask the Apple Store for something similar they have no idea what I'm talking about.
Any help in either identifying the device I had before or coming up with a new solution would be greatly, greatly appreciated. I'm ready to pull out my hair at the moment. I refuse to replace a $300 dollar piece of equipment just because I'm having trouble finding something that used to be on the market.

SpringFaery, you didn't say what specifically is wrong with the headphone jack, so I don't know if this will help you or not. I have a 5th generation iPod 30GB that just started having problems with the headphone jack. One of the earbuds was losing sound intermittently. I checked the headphones on other devices and they're fine. The same problem happens when I try other headphones on the iPod, so I assume the problem is the headphone jack.
I found another thread about sound problems with 5th generation iPods in this forum that said that pressing on one corner of the iPod fixes that problem, so I tried doing that on my iPod and it works fine now. I used a 2-inch binder clip and put it on the right side of the iPod, in the upper corner under the headphone jack. I have a leather cover on the iPod, so the binder clip is over that. The sound is back to normal now so I'm happy with this "usermod" fix. If your problem is similar maybe this can help.

  • Solutions for Imac G4 with no HDD

Bought a "Lamp" Imac G4 at auction with HDD removed.
It is such a design tour-de-force, I had to have one, if only just to use as a digital picture frame.
I'd like to use it for pictures, occasional web browsing, maybe a little music here or there.
    15" screen, 1Gig processor, 512MiB RAM, 80GB HDD (removed)
I'm not afraid to install new RAM, or an airport extreme card, but replacing the HDD looks like a 36 step journey into tiny screw ****.
My two "cheat" solutions are:  (I know nothing about Apple)
    (1)     Add an external HDD...prolly via the firewire 400 port?
Is this doable at all with no internal HDD? Can it be that simple? What kind of drive? Please advise.
    (2) I use a lot of Linux distros with my PCs (it doesn't take an Apple lover to despise Windows) Would it be possible to install an IMAC G4-friendly "light" distro like puppy Linux? An OS which can run live in the RAM?
    (3) Any other simple way to avoid installing a new HDD in the VERY tightly packed globe of the "lamp"?
Feel free to hold my hand like the I-child that I am...

I run an external firewire harddrive off of my iMac g3 600. Works fine.

You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer [ a few G5's will boot from USB ].
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.

  • Need solution for iMac 27 inch accidentally smashed badly.

Smashed up Apple iMac 27 inch ( Late 2013 slim ) which fell from a table and had its screen completely busted up. The iMac is still fully functional but the screen was cracked badly and it looks terrible. The aluminum back panel was also badly bend during the fall. Whats the solution now?

An Apple retail store or independent service provider can obtain the parts, however it will be a very costly repair. They will need to replace the entire aluminum enclosure and the display, which means they will need to carefully and safely break the adhesive bond between the display and enclosure, then remove the remaining parts including the logic board, power supply, hard drive, camera, mounting hardware, stand, etc. and transfer them to the new enclosure.
If you have homeowners or renters insurance I suggest checking with your insurance company to see whether they can help. If you used a credit card to purchase the iMac check to see whether there are any provisions that cover this type of damage. Some credit cards extend warranties and offer other nice perks like accidental damage protection.
While your iMac is up and running I strongly urge you to make a backup of all your data. I suggest the same for any computer user, but after an event like this that has caused significant damage it becomes especially important.
Good luck with your efforts to restore your iMac.

  • Enable CMSS-3D with 5.1 Surround Sound Headphon

Hey everyone I heared of a post or something on another site that a creative rep or soemthing said that you should have CMSS-3D off when you have the X-FI configured for 5. speakers. Is this true? I did a search of the forums and didnt find an answer. So please someone answer! thanks!

It depends on what you're doing. When you have 5. headphones connected, you should set up the card as if you are using 5. speakers. The CMSS-3DHeadphone option is for when you are using standard stereo headphones, and the speaker selection is set to "Headphones".
You can enable CMSS with your 5. headphones (but set the speaker selection to 5., that way you get the right CMSS setting), so you get 5. from sources like music, for instance. Music is normally only stereo.

  • Video capture solutions for iMac?

Back when I was a PC sufferer, I used to capture video of video games and other stuff via a video capture card. Now that I have better applications for editing footage on my iMac, I'd like to be able to capture footage again. The guy at the Apple Store told me that there are firewire devices that can capture video footage, unfortunately I forgot which company's products he recommended! Anyone here know of any such devices and which is the best brand to use? Thanks.

Do you want to capture videos of the games you're playing on your Mac? If I understood it correctly, then you might try Snapz Pro X, and even if it's not a UB app, it runs smoothly on my iMac.
    Product Description
Snapz Pro X is a quantum leap in video capture technology, adroitly capturing full motion video of anything on your screen at a blistering pace, complete with digital audio, and an optional microphone voiceover. Think of it as a digital video camera for your screen.
If, on the contrary, I misunderstood what you wrote, forget about it.
