Surround sound output from Y-adapter

Hey guys,
I am going to be setting up a Mac mini media centre. I know the mini has an analog/digital out. The receiver I am hooking it up to unfortunately does not have Toslink, just composite. Is it still possible for me to get 5.1 from an analog y-adapter?
Anyone done this? I figure it'd work, but I want to try and figure out any issues prior to purchase.
Thanks.

In addition, a Y-adapter would have no practical use in that scenario. It would only split the stereo signal to dual stereo signals, not give you more "channels."

Earlier mini offered 5.1 surround sound output thru headphone jack.  Does new 2014 Mac mini offer surround sound through any of its' outputs, including the headphone jack?

You can get 5.1 out the the HDMI putput.

The headphone jack also includes an optical audio out that supports 5.1. Yo need:

  • No sound output from dock connector or headphones but speaker is fine

    I've got a 3GS which I've had since October.
Recently, there has been no sound output from the headphone socket - or rather, what does come out is very strange, sounding almost electronically distorted.
I thought that maybe the headphone jack was broken, but now I've found out that the same thing can be heard through a dock when the iPod is connected this way.
I'm fairly sure the dock connector is still fine as the phone charges and can be controlled by the dock etc
Most of the discussions I've found relate to sound not coming from the speaker on the phone, but this is absolutely fine.
    Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
I'm not optimistic that this will help any more than the procedures you've already tried, but it won't hurt to try.
Do you still have your OS 9 installation? If so, try booting into OS 9 and see if the problems with the audio are happening there, too. If so, you can bet it's a hardware problem.
How big is your hard drive and how much space remains available on it? If you don't have your OS 9 installation in order to check out whether it's a hardware problem and you have enough available hard drive space, you may want to try an Archive and Install of the OS in order to make sure it isn't an OS X system-wide problem. If that doesn't do it, you could back up your hard drive and restore your software.
All of this may just be spinning your wheels, but it's all stuff you can try before shelling out a lot of money for repairs.

  • Sound output from other user accounts

It used to be that I would hear sounds from other logged-in user accounts; I'd hear my wife's new mail arrival sound, I'd hear her Skype ringing when calls were coming in, etc. I also used to be able to play iTunes in one account, fast-user-switch to another, and the music would still play.
This has all gone away recently. I'm not exactly sure but I think it coincided with the 10.4.4 update.
This is a big concern because my wife was used to hearing her incoming Skype calls ringing when I was using the Mac, but now she misses all her calls if someone else is logged in!
I haven't found any other mention of this in any forum. Is this just me having this problem? Any way I can fix it?

Okay, I just got off the phone with Apple support and they say that sound outputting from other user accounts was a "bug" that has now been "fixed." They said that this was patched sometime between the 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 updates. I'm surprised to hear that you are having this problem in 10.4.2 because I'm sure it worked for me under 10.4.3 at some point. None of the security updates released under either 10.4.3 or 10.4.4 make any mention of this patch.
Apple support says that there's no preference for this setting and we've just got to live with it now.
This is so irritating! I've got my Skype ring tone, she's got hers, and we'd hear it ringing and know who it was for no matter who was logged in. Now that functionality is busted, and when one of us is logged in the other misses all the calls, and if one of my kids is logged in then both of us miss our calls! I can't believe Apple considers this "bug" to be "fixed".
There's got to be a way around this; maybe by using the "defaults write" command or something? That command sets a lot of preferences that Apple claims are not user-settable.

  • Lower than expected sound output from A100

    Hi.
I have recently bought a Satellite A100 PSAA9E and have been pretty disappointed with the low sound output from it.
It's currently set to the highest volume level and is nowhere near the level I would expect.
Is this normal for this machine? All advice appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi
Well, its not easy to say what a low level is because its your own perception.
You know that the notebook speakers are not very powerful speakers because of the size and you can not compare it with other speakers.
But nevertheless; did you check also the settings in the control panel -- Sound and Audio devices?
There you can set the different sound controls to max. Maybe then you will notice a difference.

  • Can I put ALL the sound output from my iMac through Airport?

Just got Airport Express, and managed to install it very quickly on my existing Belkin network. Just don't forget the $ before your WEP key.
Does anyone know if its possible to put ALL the sound output from my iMac through to Airport, rather than just iTunes? So internet radio, streaming videos etc?

Thanks matey - that's just what I was after.
Not sure if that will also let me put my iMac's system sounds through my HiFi - probably not - but then who in their right mind could possibly want to...?
(Be nice if you could though)

You have posted your issue in Using Apple Support Communities whose topic is 'How to use this forum software's interface, features and/or how to find what you wish'. • No sound output from iPod classic

I have an iPod classic (5th generation).  Suddenly, I have no sound output from earphones, iHome, speakers or AUX.  Reset did not fix the issue and I have not done a restore.  I saw something referring to a "logic board" issue so thinking there is a hardware issue.  Any thougths?

A complete restore of the device in iTunes would rule out any sort of software error/glitch or data corruption on the device.  So if you haven't done that yet, I would go ahead and do so now.
    Restoring iPod to factory settings
And if the problem still continues, it's likely hardware related with the iPod's logic board as you have already noted.

  • No sound output from Maxell iPod dock

Just purchased a Silver 8GB Nano, Maxell iPod dock, and the Scosche PassPort/Adapter for 5th generation iPods, all as a gift set. The Maxell dock now charges the Nano with the Scosche adapter, but there is no music signal out of the dock's 3.5mm jack. In fact, the Nano's internal speaker remains on while sitting on the dock, charging.
I have reset the device many times using center + menu, with no changes.
Headphones plugged into the Nano's 3.5mm jack work perfectly, but no output from the Maxell dock.
Anyone used this dock, with or without a 5th gen Nano, or have any tips to fix this? I am still waiting on a reply from Maxell via email, but I doubt that will happen until next week...

I have the same problem with a 5th Generation iPod on a Jensen JiMS-195 Universal Docking Station for iPod. The sound is great using the Auxiliary jack, but I only get sound through the internal iPod speakers when it's docked. I have checked the Apple site and the Jensen site, but no luck.
Is there some setting on the iPod to change this behavior or is the dock the problem? Any response would be welcome.

  • Can´t get optical sound output from my brand new mini

have connected the MM to an optical input on my Yamaha RX-V659, but I can´t get no sound.
Mac-side: After connecting and turning on, "System Prefs -> Sound -> Output" has changed to Digital Output and says that no output controls are available for this output. I have tried playing from iTunes and DVD Player. In DVD player the option for selecting Digital Output had appeared, and I chose that. When I take a look at the end of the cable I plug into the receiver I see a constant red light.
Yamaha-side: I have tried 2 different optical inputs, and gone over my settings several times. The receiver does not seem to detect digital audio coming in. I tried the Signal Info menu on my receiver, and for another source it output:
    PCM, 48kHz, 2.0, Analog
On the optical input it says:
    ---, ---, 2.0, Analog

I have a similar setup to a Kenwood receiver. You are correct that ALL system sounds (frontrow, system alerts, etc.) will play through to your stereo.
Have you tried switching Toslink cables and/or the toslink to miniplug adapter that is plugged into the mini?
I had a bad cable at one point in time, and a bad adapter at another point in the life of this system. You perhaps tried these things already but I only saw mention of trying 2 different inputs (I assume on the receiver) and made no mention of cables/adapters.
Let me know how you make out.

  • 5.1 sourround sound output from QuickTime Player

Hello all, first time in the QuickTime forum (and I think I already answered an iBook question!). I have a 1.4GHz G4 Mac mini with an m-audio Sonica USB to get digital optical audio and 5.1 audio out of my computer to my stereo. This combination works great with Apple's DVD Player and the VLC Media Player and I get surround sound out of my DVDs and video files. However, QuickTime files, like the HD movie trailers, which say they have more audio tracks (and they're enabled), only play through the right & left front speakers. For Apple's DVD Player, I had to select the m-audio device as the digital audio output device. However, I can't seem to find an option like that in my QuickTime Player. I have Mac OS X 10.4.5 and QuickTime 7.0.4 (Pro). Is there something I'm missing to get all the tracks to play directly from the QuickTime Player?
    -Doug

There's a little bit of confusion going on here I think..
Okay, let me clear this up for you all!
Quicktime uses AAC 5.1 as it's 'surround' format. Most 5.1 (Optical) Speaker systems have a decoder which will only be able to decode Dolby Digital or DTS. AAC is a different format to these two, so.. the speakers end up having to just decode in to 2 speakers.
The solution would be either, in my case, a usb/firewire 'soundcard' which has 6 channel output direct for my Logitech Z-5500. Then the OS would know that the soundcard can handle 6 specific channels and you'd be able to select this in Midi Setup. Then Quicktime would happily decode AAC 'locally' on the mac and play each channel through the soundcard.

  • Output from JDBC Adapter mapped to multiple message types

    Hi!
I face to a problem with the message mapping.. I do select with the JDBC adapter. This statement selects one field of clob type and it already contains a message - XML document. Depending of the type of this message will be done the message mapping and also the target message type depends on this XML document type. But when u define message mapping, there must be always a target message type... But in the design time, I don't know the exact type! It is dynamic...
And not just with the message, the same situation is also with the target interface...
Any ideas how to solve this?
    Thanx, Peter

    Hi,
I saw the weblog, but I think more important is the 'XI in action' mentioned in this one..
    /people/ravikumar.allampallam/blog/2005/06/22/sap-xi-in-action
What I just can not understand from that blog is the step 2/4:
Receive XML file of any format and route to interface specific BPM..
How is it possible? On the output from the 1st BPM must be exact interface defined... How can different messages go out and than into the 2nd BPM?
Can you please write me, how the individual steps could follow after each other to achieve this?

  • No Sound Output from front headphones jack on HPE-070a

Two days ago, i purchased a new HPE-070a with Windows 7 64-bit and Realtek HD Audio Drivers. Unfortunately, while the sound output to the speakers from the rear jack is working really well, the headphone jack at the front of the box has no output. I've updated the Realtek drivers and reinstalled them as well, but when I run the troubleshooter, it tells me that "sound playing not functioning". The PC recognises that, once the headphones are in that's where the sound is output, but there's nothing going on.
If you've got any ideas, it'd be greatly appreciated if you could let me know. If i don't have headphones, my girlfriend's going to be assaulted with Counter Strike and Dragon Age!
    Thanks.

Beaker, have you checked in the Control Panel to assure that all boxes are checked correctly?  It may be that the headphone jack is not enabled.

  • Less sound output from inbuilt speaker

seems to be less sound output is coming from inbuilt speakers. i don't know how to verify whether this is the maximum sound capacity of inbuilt speakers
    My Product Details:
Product Name: HP pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
    Product Number: QJ912AV#ABA
OS Installed: Windows 7 64 bit

How long have you been without sound?  When did you first notice it?  Do you remember if you installed any updates or programs just before it happened?  I guess we could consider taking off the case and start checking for lose connections or blown speakers. I do think you should maybe try to reinstall the HP sound drivers one more time and make sure no other sound software is installed in add/remove software from your control panel.
