  • How to output surround sound with airport express N

is this possible? I am streaming successfully with airport express, sounds great with no audio dropouts. I have it hardwired to my router and the AX is connected optical to my surround receiver. Music is only played through my fronts. Is there a way to output surround sound? I can't even choose different audio options through my A/V receiver.

I Found out the problem. When I was hooking everything up, I kept the t.v. on so I can assign audio inputs with the onscreen display. If the T.V. is left on....only stereo outputted. When I turned the t.v. off and with the airport express plugged into AUX, I was able to switch between surround sound settings.
so the moral of the story is, turn off video devices when you just want sound, especially if they are hooked up to the AVR with HDMI.

  • Audiostreaming over Airport Express via Ethernet

So far, streaming audio over Airport Express in my large house has been a bit unstable - the audio stream often gets interrupted.
Now I have been thinking of using a wired Ethernet network instead of wireless transmission.
My question: The Airport Express has an Ethernet port. Is it possible to access the Airport Express wired to an Ethernet network and use it to listen to streamed audio?
Question two: And still use its wireless functionality to access the Internet?
What about the Airport Extreme in this regard?

My question: The Airport Express has an Ethernet port. Is it possible to access the Airport Express wired to an Ethernet network and use it to listen to streamed audio?
    Yes.
Question two: And still use its wireless functionality to access the Internet?
Yes, you can configure the AirPort Express for a roaming network.
What about the Airport Extreme in this regard?
Yes, you can use an AirPort Extreme in a roaming network configuration; no, you cannot use it for streaming.

  • Macbook sound to airport express

    Hi,
I have a airport extreme/airport express network setup here where I can listen to itunes through my home stereo. Works great- works so well I want to be able to listen to non itunes sound through the stereo (streaming media, DVD's, etc.)
Is this possible? If it is where do I change the sound output to the Airport express for the whole Macbook?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Hello AKCub. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Perform a "hard" reset of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
To set up AirTunes on the AX, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • No sound on Airport Express (via iTunes wireless link)

I have Airport Express base station directly connected to the Alcatel 510 ADSL modem. My Toshiba Notebook is using wireless connection to the Airport Express to access Internet, which is working fine.
Using iTunes I can listen to the music on Notebook, but when I choose the remote audio system connected to the Airport Express there is no sound.
On the Music tab (Admin Utility) I have:
    - YES Enable AirTunes on this station
    - NO Enable AirTunes over ethernet (changing this to yes makes no difference)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: Roland
    - Password has been assgned to the speakers
    There is no WDS.
My first question is this set-up viable (Airport Express providing internet connection and beeing a iTunes client at the same time)?
What does the "Enable AirTunes over ethernet" setting means?
I have windows XP SP2 - are there any ports that should be open in the firewall (iTunes is listed in exceptions list), and how to do that?
    I am using optical cable.
    Robert

Well it was cable. When I changed from optical to RCA cable (bost from Monster pack) it started to work.

  • AirPort Express - watch video in itunes with SOUND via AirPort Express?

Ok I read it is only possible via Airfoil...
Sorry to bother you guys - no idea how to delee this...
    Hello everyone!
I was overly excited to receive the airport express 802.11n Wi-Fi
and everything works wonderfully. But some trouble arose non the less:
The reason for the wireless AirPort was to allow projecting Videos via a Beamer on the wall
and have fantastic sound, even though the soundsystems are standing elsewhere.
But when opening itunes (it works with normal music just fine) and starting a purchased video there,
there is no way I can choose the external soundsystem to be used to generate the sound.
This drives me nuts! It would be really silly to not be able to use a soundtransmitter by apple
when watching a video by apple's itunes, wouldn't it? That makes no sense.
Please tell me there is a way to make it work....
Thank you for your time and help!
    Lia

Apple does offer an option that does both. It's called the Apple TV.

  • Playing with no sound via Airport Express

Several posts over the past year have been archived with no answer to this question:
Why does iTunes 7.0.2 stop playings songs when both the computer and an Airtunes Remote (in my case connected via a base station) are selected for output?
    Stops between songs
Plays a random number of songs between 1 and maybe 30
The next song is playing according to song progress bar
    Pause and play restarts
Other sound (Quicktime movie or Safari sourced) plays
Audio MIDI Setup Line Out set to 44100 Hz (often changed by MPlayer which is not the self-billed greatest)
Computer is not trying to go to sleep
Aiport Admin Utility Wireless Options Multicast set to 2 (experimenting with 1) and Interference Robustness enabled (experimenting without)
    Boot ROM MP11.005C.B04
Best guess: downstream of iTunes the audio output hardware negotiates with the network but when it gets a no-go flag clamps the stream from iTunes keeping it from even playing through the line out port. Possibly a firmware bug.

    Not using Front Row.
The real issue here is that audio and video stream at different speeds and it is hard to maintain sync. You know how when you hit play within iTunes it takes a while for the song to start through the speakers? It's the same with the DVD. So you'd need to work an offset into the audio when playing a DVD and it's not an exact science.
You can download VLC player and mess around with the offset, then you'll also need a program like Airfoil to be able to force audio through the airport express.
    Good luck!

  • Trouble printing to Canon ip4200 over Airport Express from Windows XP

I've just spent the last 4 hours trying to get my Dell laptop running XP to print to my Canon ip4200 USB printer connected to my Airport Express. My PowerBook (10.3.4) connected without issue and has been working fine. The XP laptop just refused to print, and the "troubleshooter" was useless. It would print fine over a direct USB connection, but, despite following the directions for connecting an Airport Printer in XP to the letter, it failed to print every time.
I was tearing my hair out in frustration when I eventually discovered this post at macosxhints: "RAW port has changed!" (scroll down thew page a bit):

The default Raw configuration for "Standard TCP/IP Port" was set to 9100. I manaully changed it to 9101 and all works great now.
I don't know where the default of 9100 came from, but this has cost me an entire morning of frustration. GRRRRR!

  • No sound with Airport Express and AirTunes

Hi. I have an Airport Extreme wireless router. I recently extended the wifi network with an Airport Express. Both devices show "green" in Airport Utility and appear to be working fine. I then connected the Airport Express to a powered speaker.
In iTunes on my MacBook Pro, I can select my Airport Express from the menu in the bottom right corner. When I play a song, however, no sound comes out of the speaker. I tried disconnecting the speaker and connecting a pair of earbuds directly into the Airport Express. Still no sound. Any ideas?
As FYI, when I touch the Airport Express, I notice that it is quite hot on the sides. Is this normal?
    Thank you

for the avoidance of doubt, did you +enable airtunes+ in the music tab of the AX's airport utility music tab ?

can't say it is for my two units. have you made sure your unit is placed in a well ventilated spot ?

  • Computer Sound and Airport Express out of Sync

Hi, i have a W7-Computer in the living room connected to the Hi-Fi system and the TV and several Airport Express to stream the music to other rooms (e.g. kitchen). Till recently i used a very old Stereo-Amp and everything was fine, the music in the living room and in the kitchen were perfectly in sync. Now i had to change to a new Home Cinema Receiver (ONKYO TX-NR609) and probably because of the data processing the Receiver does there is a delay, so that the music in the kitchen is slightly ahead of the one in the living Room. I tried different connections between Computer and Receiver (now using optical-link) and different music modes the receiver has (Stereo, Direct, Pure Audio) but didnt manage to sync it again. Does anybody have an idea? Is there a way to delay the transmission from iTunes to the Airport Express, in order to leave the Receiver enough time to process the music?

    Use the analog output.
The AX has an a terrible flaw: optical delay.
    Notes:
Apple should be able to update this with software. Apple?
I just tested this today with multiple recievers (onkyo TXSR508, sony STR-DH520).
Also: be sure your reciever is not set to delay audio. It sounds like you may have already checked this b/c you mentioned pure audio (which is only for european models?): http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=TX-NR609&class=Receiver&p=d. Other people have had this problem and have fixed it by configuring a/v sync.
See https://discussions.apple.com/message/15785854 for details on my issue.

  • Can the iPad play video sound to airport express

Is it possible to play my DVD with audio sound via my Airport Express speakers?
I can play music with iTunes trough these speakers, it would be nice if I can hear my DVDs aswell.

  • Poor sound quality, Airport Express

    Hi,
I have this 2 yrs old airport express but it has all of the sudden a really poor sound quality.
When I connect it to my home stereo and play through airplay and if I connect headphones the sound is very poor and scratchy
I've used 3 diffferent cables to connect it to my home stereo and i've tried 2 different set of headphnoes.
When i connect directly to my home stereo with RCA cable the sound is fine.
Is the only solution to buy a new airport?
    Thank you.

Based on your description, it appears that the base station's internal DAC is the issue and may be failing. Unfortunately these are not user replaceable parts and a complete base station replacement may be the only option at this point in time.
One other option to try, if your stereo supports digital optical input, is to use a mini-jack Toslink cable connected between the base station's audio port and the stereo to see if you can get "clean" sound this way.

  • J3680 Scan over airport express??

I just bought an officejet j3680 and I want to be able to scan over the network. I have print capabilities but no scan. When I do the software install while the printer is hooked to my airport express the installer says that it needs 0kb of space to install. It then proceeds to go straight to the success screen. If I hook up the printer via USB directly to my iMac then the software will install all sorts of **bleep**.
Why won't/can't it install over the network. "It isn't supported" is a sucky answer all by itself. If you say "it's not supported because...." then that helps me to understand what is actually going on so that I don't make similar assumptions in the future. If it's just this particular all-in-one that isn't supported then fine, but is there one that this feature is supported on? Thanks in advance for the help.
    Nathan

It isn't supported because the printer does not come with a Network Interface Card(NIC) preinstalled, or it doesnt have the option of inserting one in it(actually, none of our printers do). the NIC enables it to connect and interact to a network. but since it does not have one, you cannot use it over a network.
if you want an Officejet that jas network capabilities, both wired and wireless, then go for the Officejet J6480.
