Survey on best practice Business Intelligence Strategy - Join in

I have created a survey (link below) and will share the results back to this thread.  Many of SAP's customers are focusing on establishing or reenergizing a Business Intelligence strategy and platform.  Many questions arise and we often wonder how others are approaching the challenges.  This is a quick 10 question survey.  If the response is well received, we can have follow-up surveys or polls.  Please take a moment to complete the survey and respond back with other questions we might add to future surveys.
Thanks.

Looks like there is some interest.  Looking for others to take the survey too.  Thanks.

  • Diff Between Best Practices  &  Business Packages

    Dear Master
Can u give a brief difference between
                           Best Practices  &  Business Packages?
    thankx

    Hi,
Best Practices : SAP Best Practices provide a toolset that helps IT and functional project team members to quickly deploy functionality in SAP solutions - from SAP NetWeaver, to core SAP applications. This toolset comprises a mix of step-by-step instructions, preconfiguration, sample master data, code samples (where applicable) and end-user training - organized by technical or business scenarios that you might want to implement in your landscape.
    http://help.sap.com/content/bestpractices/crossindustry/bestp_based_netweaver.htm
Business Packages : The SAP NetWeaver Portal offers a state-of-the-art portal solution. However, to make a portal useful to all the people it seeks to serve, it must not only provide general portal capabilities, but also content designed specifically to serve users in various industries and business areas.
SAP provides such pre-assembled content bundled as business packages for completing business tasks. In essence, the business packages provide out-of-the-box portal applications that can be easily modified to suit a customer's needs.

    Hope this helps.

Unzip the content of the Business Package zip file into some folder. While importing the business package, select the .pkg file in the unzipped folder. This solves your problem.

  • Best Practice Business Scenario.

    Hello,
Can any one please share your thoughts and best industry business scenarios with relevant information/links for implementing SAP GRC AC suite 5.3 with the following components?
    1. SAP ECC with HR, BI and CRM
    2. SAP IDM
    3. Active Directory
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks

    Hi Harry,
Implementation of GRC Access Control depends on the system landscape you have in your organization.
& it can be integrated with SAP ECC with HR, BI and CRM.

  • [Best Practices] Which versioning strategy for the web applications?

    Hi all,
An important question when starting to develop a web application is how to correctly make the releases follow-up?
That involves to adopt a versioning strategy to definitely fix the version numbers which will be associated to each release.
The versioning strategy i have imagined is based on four different numbers with format like v.X.X.X.X:
       - The first one represents the version number of the database structure.
       - The second number is linked to the different finalized releases of the data model layer.
       - The third number concerns the different releases of the interfaces
       - And finally, the last number is the Subversion (or other code control system) last save. This strategy involves:
       - The subversion number is systematically reported
       - Changes on the database will affect both the data model layer and the interfaces; also, among the three first numbers only the first one will have to change.
       - Changes made on the data model level automatically involve a new interfaces release and will also be represented on the second number and not on the third.
       - Finally, bring some changes only on the interfaces level will affect the third and the fourth numbers only.My questions are:
       1) Is my choice correct?
       2) Maybe it already exists some versioning convention?
       3) What is your strategy?
       4) What is the strategy for the Jdeveloper versions?Best regards,
    Tif

  • Best practice business process models

We have been using ARIS for well over a year now for realizing our vision for Business Process Management.
Recently, the management has been looking for ways to benchmark, evaluate and compare our processes with that being practised else where in the world, with a view to ensure requisite process controls, automation, transparency, staffing levels and KPI's.
Having said that, we tried to search for ready-made out-of-the-box ARIS business process models (up to level 4) in areas such as Human Capital Management, Supply Chain (Procurement), Supplier Relationship Management and others, but we were unable to find any source. While we did find purchasable ARIS processes for ITIL, but other than that our search had yield no result.
Are we approaching this right? and is there such a source available from SAP or any third-party vendors?
    Regards,
    Muhammad Hamdan

    Hi Sunita,
The concept of development component are relevent from desing time perspective , at runtime there is no difference whether you create Model + Component + Application in one DC or multiple . The DC concept helps to increase the reusability and guides to have better design of your application . For example if you have model in a DC while your Components + UI in seperate DC . Changes in Model ( Reimport / Delete / ...)  could be well abstracted from using DC . More over the same model DC could be re-used at multiple places /DCs.
As far as performance is concerned yes it increases from dc build and application development point of view.
I would suggest to have model in seperate DC as this is better desing approach and offers maintenability.

  • Best practice recmmendations for backups

    Hi,
I wanted advise from senior basis consultants on backup strategy.
Here is a summary of our environment:
We have 6 SAP servers, with more than 1 SAP system installed per server.
The SAP systems include CRM, SRM, XI, Portal, Solution Mgr, ERP , R/3 , BW. Many of these have java stack enabled with integrated ITS etc.
The systems are internal and used for sales demos, not productive
On an average 1 to 2 business days of functional work is done on most of these systems per week.
Admin changes such as support packs, kernel patches, minor config changes to config files on disk ( e.g. for IPC, TREX etc. ) are done on a routine basis.
It took us weeks to get some of these systems installed and all the  issues ironed out. So re-installing all applications from scratch and restoring the database is not the best option for us.
We are willing to live with losing a week's worth of data in case of a failure.
We currently have OS licenses for Veritas, but no MSSQL server agent licenses.
Right now we do 1 offline OS backup every weekend. Database online backups are done once a week to disk and txn logs daily to disk. I am planning to drop the db backups though. I know SAP's recommendations for productive systems, but that is overkill for us. Alternatively any SAP  documents that describe this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sanket

Hi, I came across this message while searching for something else.  I also was asked to find the "Best Practices" for backup strategy in the past.  I found nothing from SAP.
I get the impression that SAP doesn't produce such a thing.  When I created the backup strategy for my client, I think I understand why this might be the case.
I think you can find documentation on what is technically required to make sure that you can restore/recover a database.  I don't even think I have seen documentation from SAP on what you have to preserve at the OS level to restore a system.
But, technical requirements for recovery are not the same as a backup strategy.  When you start talking about this subject, you have to know some things about the organization, about how much it costs to be down, and how much you are willing to spend to prevent downtime and data loss.
It depends on the size of the organization.  You have to know whether the Basis person also do the DB admin work, the OS admin work, the "tape hanging" work, etc.  In the SMB world, it sometimes is the case that one person does all the work, so there is no coordination to be done.  But you still have to coordinate "backup coverage" for the activity, in the event of absence/separation of the primary resource.
You also need to test the backup strategy, too.
Based on these inputs, and others, you synthesize a strategy that guarantees that your organization is covered by the backups.

  • Best Practice: Correct Use Tax Calculation

    Hello,
Our company is wanting to find out how other companines handle the below business process scenario involving use tax:
Company orders 100 units of materials for delivery to location A.  Tax is calculated on PO based on location A ship-to address in SAP.  Once company receives the materials in location A, company then transfer the materials out to location B for final use.
We are wanting to get some best practice business process suggestions for this scenario so that the correct tax is captured and paid based on the final usage location of the materials.
    Thanks!

Most commonly used process for this :-
    Steps:-
1)Plant A:- Will place the PO on vendor  {Material would be the trading material "HAWA} ( You need to maintain the purchasing data and sales data for this material)
2)Plant B:- will place the stock transfer PO on plant A for that material
    Thanks,
    Vikas Rander.

    Hi Anish.S,
According to your description, you want to backup SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) database.
Before we get to the backup and restore syntax, it’s worth noting that the Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW) appliance architecture offers an environment that greatly enhances backup times (due to dedicated storage and network interfaces, see the following post
    for more information -
    https://saldeloera.wordpress.com/2012/07/09/lesson-1-of-parallel-data-warehouse-basic-architecture-overview/).

  • Best practices for EUL/Business Areas

What is the best way to handle multiple business areas? Even if they have no relations with each other?
Should I have one EUL with many business areas in it? Or many EULs with one business areas in each?
Does any one know where I can find the advantages and disadvantages of each?
    Thanks,
    Rob

Hey there (repost of a similar thread in this forum).
Many clients I've been at have the exact same discussion. And the one I push for is to have 1 EUL, let the BIS views have their own business areas and like you said, don't customize them.
For all corporate business areas, folders, etc. just create them in the same EUL but the business areas have a corporate prefix (ie: coca cola would have a CC_ prefix). That way ALL folders can access the BIS views if wanted (ie: join across business areas), special setups (ie: LOVs) could be in a particular business area where ALL folders could access) and updating BIS views with new versions would be a problem.
I really don't like multiple EUL as it's one of those simple things that can be a gotcha' for many end users that drives the helpdesk nuts trying to understand why a particular user can see his info.
Just my take (and of course, what I think is the 'best practice' 8-) ).

  • Best Practice in using Business Packages

    Hi All,
Are there any Best Practices in the use of Business Package content?   Do you assign the Roles delivered by the Business Package and do you make changes to the original iViews?
    or
Do you copy the content delivered in the Business Package to a new folder and work with there?
These questions are purely at the configuration level and not at the Java coding level.   For instance if I want to turn of the iView Tray, or change a parameter such as height, or even remove an iView from a page or Role.
I would like to know the various approaches the SDN community uses and the different challenges and benefits that result in each approach.
Look forward to hearing from you all
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
I also build my own roles. The only time I might use the standard roles is for demo purposes early in a project.  You will find that in some cases the business packages like MSS don't always even include standard roles, so you have no choice but to build.
I never change any of the standard iViews/Pages/Worksets - ever.
The most contentious issue seems to be whether to do a full or delta link copy of the standard objects.  I tend to initially do a full copy of the objects into a custom folder set in the PCD and modify those. Then I only use delta links from Page to iViews where I need the option of setting different properties for the same iView if it appears in multiple pages.  Delta links can be a bit flakey at times, so I tend to only use them where I have to.  I suspect that I may get to a point where I don't use them at all.
    Just my 2 cents worth....
    Regards,
    John

  • Basic Strategy / Best Practices for System Monitoring with Solution Manager

I am very new to SAP and the Basis group at my company. I will be working on a project to identify the best practices of System and Service level monitoring using Solution Manager. I have read a good amount about SAP Solution Manager and the concept of monitoring but need to begin mapping out a monitoring strategy.
We currently utilize the RZ20 transaction and basic CCMS monitors such as watching for update errors, availability, short dumps, etc.. What else should be monitored in order to proactively find possible issues. Are there any best practices you all have found when implimenting Monitoring for new solutions added to the SAP landscape.... what are common things we would want to monitor over say ERP, CRM, SRM, etc?
Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions!

    Hi Mike,
Did you try the following link ?
If not, it may be useful to some extent:
    http://service.sap.com/bestpractices
---> Cross-Industry Packages ---> Best Practices for Solution Management
You have quite a few documents there - those on BPM may also cover Solution Monitoring aspects.
