SUS - Discovery of new updates

Looking to implement Software Update Server on a Mac Mini running 10.9.2 with Server 3.0 with Open Directory configured. All connected clients are on the same local network.
Does OS X Server only pull software updates from Apple that match what is needed from the other Mac's joined to the server? Or does it pull all updates from Apple, even if none of my computers need it.
Example: All my Mac's run 10.9.x - will OS X Server download updates for Mountain Lion?

Great! That's what I needed to know about Automatic.
Now with the manual option, how do I know which updates to select that are relevant to each Mac client? Does the update show a list of which Macs its compatible for and the OS its for?
The client system can handle 175GB in automatic, but I prefer to limit the size as much as possible as their storage network only has 2.3TB available at the moment.
As for the caching, from what I gathered in Apple support documents - it will cache all Apple related downloads (software updates, iTunes, and Mac App Store). However, the software updates will not be usable becaues SUS will download its own copy and the SUS interface will manage the clients. However, this shouldn't be an issue as caching server deletes the oldest unused file first which most likely will be all the software updates that have been downloaded.

SUS not supplying new updates

I'm running Tiger Server in an AD environment and up until a week ago the Software Update Server was running smoothly. It wasn't until the latest update (10.4.6) came out that I noticed it wasn't dishing out any new updates for installation. Now, all the clients pointing to it are getting "Software is up to date". I have one computer that I just wiped and reinstalled Tiger on today, and immediately redirected it to my local SUS server and am still getting the same message. I should be showing at least a dozen updates to install.
I've used the command prompt as well as the Software Update Enable after the fresh install and am not getting anything. I have 92 items mirrored and 64 enabled on the server.
Like I said, it was working fine up until about a week ago. Not sure what may have changed. These clients are not managed by the Xserve. Any ideas?

On the server, trash the index.sucatalog file. Restart the SUS services. Let it rebuild the catalog.
On the client you can do 2 options:
1. Using OD set the computer managed preferences to point to the SUS.
2. Use Property List Editor.app (installed with Developer Tools) to
edit /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist. Add a
"CatalogURL" string with value http://[SERVER]:8088/ (note
the trailing slash) underneath root. Copy this plist file to each OS
X client.
These fixes have come from Apple themselves. I also troubleshooted the process as I have an AD structure instead of OD

SUS does not activate Updates

my SUS in Server 3.1.2 does only show tht there are new Updates, but does not activate nor download them.
Whats up with that freaky stuff called "Server"?

If this local configuration is using .local as the DNS domain, then DNS services are incorrectly configured.
Windows Server used that as a default for a while, unfortunately — that's caused no end of trouble.
That domain is presently reserved for Bonjour / multicast DNS / mDNS use, and not available for this usage.
Use of .local for a DNS server is known to cause issues, and is something the Apple network engineers have recommended against.
If you're going to use a bogus top-level domain, then you'll also want to stay out of .arpa, and probably also out of .com and any other ICANN-sanctioned top-level domain, if you don't have a registration for the domain. Or (easier, better) reserve a domain for your own internal use.

Firefox will not open after new update; Error: Platform version '1.9.2.13' is not compatible

After accepting the new update I got this error message when trying to restart Firefox:

I have tried:
- Opening in Safe Mode; same error
- Uninstalling, deleting remaining info in C>ProgramFiles>MozillaFirefox folder, and reinstalling.
- Updating Avast antivirus in case that was interfering.
Now when I try to start Firefox I get this message;
Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.
But there is nothing happening in the Windows Task Manager. Please, somebody save me from Windows Internet Explorer!!

I experienced this error updating from Firefox 3.6.13 to 3.6.14 and resolved it by doing a 'clean' install' as described. It occurred again in updating from 3.6.14 to 3.6.15 and this time a clean install failed to rectify it. (Anyway, I don't want to have to go through this every time.)
Work-around: Shut down Firefox. Edit application.ini (typically "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\application.ini")

There are no updates to either OS 10.5.8 or Safari 5.0.6.
If you need a later version of Safari you must first upgrade your operating system to a later version of OS X.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

I received the new update from Itunes and after installing, I couldnt get into my Itunes. I get a message from Windows saying that an MC file is missing and to reinstall I tunes. I have reinstalled 3 times, the first time I didn't remove the old version, I installed the update over it. Next I tried the repair function under Control Panel. After that, I uninstalled Itunes and reinstalled again from the website. I still get the same message about missing files from Windows.

Please help me figure this out. I'm very unhappy at the moment. I'm fustrated and don't have any idea how to revert to the original version before the update was done on iMovie 10. I NEVER hated APPLE until NOW!! I love APPLE products and apps so please help me stay in that mindset. So I worked on some movie projects when I got my macbook pro 6 months ago. I update reguarly. I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?
I am running Yosemitie on a iMac.

Yup, updated my Apple TV and got sky news and a couple of other new apps I will never use. I am growing increasingly fed up with looking at all the good stuff there is on offer in America and nothing in the UK..... I know I shouldn't look :)
And it's not just Apple I suppose, checking out the apple and Microsoft US movie stores and they have a much better selection. Wish we all had the willpower to stop giving these companies money until they fulfil customer needs...

Problems with the new update on iPad

Hi, i just installed the new update on my i pad and now its not working anymore, it keeps trying to open, but it doesnt even got past the black background with the apple logo on it, then it closes and reopens after, and its going on and on since yesterday, what can i do? I bought my iPad 2 years ago now, but i've been caring alot for it, its in really good shape and all, is there anything i can do to fix the problem or do i have to go to the apple store... and even there, will they fix it or tell me to buy a new one...

I already tried holding both the Home button and Sleep/Wake buttons but it didn't work, and since my iPad is not staying open long enough it doesn't connect to my itunes...

My iPhone 4s says that my software version 5.0.1 is up to date. Why am I not receiving the notification that the new update is available for me to download?

I have an iPhone 4s, not jailbroken. I was able to update to 5.0.1 when it came out last year. When 5.1.1 came out, I noticed that I never received the
notification that a new update was available. I updated my 2 ipads and my wife's iphone 4. I didn't bother looking into it, since I didn't feel the need to update to 5.1.1. Now I want to update to ios 6, but when I go to Settings > General > Software Update. It checks for updates , but still shows me that my 5.0.1 is up to date. I plug into itunes and check for update there and it still indicates that 5.0.1. is up to date as well.
Does anyone know what this is happening and how I can update to ios 6?
