SUS of OS X server 10.6.8 v1.1 offering too many updates to clients

After updating our Xserve from OS X Server 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 v1.1 (comboupdater) our Software Update Server is totally "confused".
For example there is a Client which needs 4 updates (according to SUS of Apple):
Combo 10.6.8 v1.1
iTunes 10.4.1
Airport 5.5.3
Remote Desktop Client 3.5.1
Connected to the SUS of our xserve we get a list of 21 updates. The updates above are offered multiple times in different versions (for example iTunes 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.4.1). Some more updates, which are not on the list above, are also offered (Java, Safari).
Any idea, why our Xserve behaves such strange and how to solve the problem? Thanks for help!

Having the same issue. Have "Delete outdated software" checked and am using the url.

In server admin. Overview tab say 568 updates. Updates window report total 308. When a client goes to update it software I get 4 diferent iTunes updates. 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.4.1. If i look through the list of updates in Server admin. iTunes 10.4.1 only shows up. I was going to delete the catalog files and dowloads and let it rebuild.

Software update server showing too many updates

We are having an issue with our Software Update Server on 10.6.8. It has started showing too many updates to the clients. For example, it will show the iTunes 10.5.1 update as well as iTunes 10.5 update if the 10.5 update hasn't been applied. If iTunes is several versions behind, it will show all those updates too. I also see this on Security Updates and Raw Compatibility updates.
At first I thought this was due to turing on the ability to host Lion updates, but it isn't the case. I have since turned on SUS on a different machine and it still does this for updates.
Anyone have a fix for this?

Same issue with our 2008 XServe. At 3am to 8am this morning, Software Update Server went loony & downloaded over 18GB of old updates.
Naturally, after tracking down this was the culprit, I've gone in & temporarily disabled Copy all updates from Apple, and disabled Automatically enable copied updates. To preserve our miniscule amount of broadband download quota remaining - it had shrunk to 500MB for the coming fortnight.
So we'll have to data-diet.
No idea why 18GB of old updates were downloaded out of the blue by Software Update Server. I wonder if yesterday's release of Apple Software Installer Update 1.0 somehow adjusted the back end of update management.

SUS on 10.6 server for 10.8 clients?

With the move of software update to the Mac App store in Mountain Lion, will SUS on 10.6 server update 10.8 clients?

Not test yet, but if you have a test environment, you can try the following way based on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4771, the lines marked bold are for Mountain Lion clients, good luck.
1. Update your server to Mac OS X Server v10.6.8.
2. Stop the Software Update service if it is running.
3. Quit Server Admin if it is active.
4. Update /etc/swupd/swupd.plist to begin hosting OS X Lion software updates. (See details below.)
5. Update /etc/swupd/swupd.conf to allow OS X Lion computers to receive updates. (See details below.)
6. Open Server Admin and start the Software Update service.
7. Use the instructions in Mac OS X Server v10.6: Using the Software Update service with multiple Mac OS X client versions to point your OS X Lion clients to this server.
In step 4, you will need root access to update the file /etc/swupd/swupd.plist. To be safe, make a backup copy of the file before editing it. Add the string in bold below to the otherCatalogs array:
    otherCatalogs
        index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
        index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog
        index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog

SUS on 10.4 server, 10.5 clients

Hi all
Mac OS X Server 10.4.11, fully patched on an Xserve G5. Serving OpenDirectory fine (DNS works, in other words).
Mac OS X Client 10.5.4, fully patched with the exception of security update 2008-005 and iTunes 7.1.1.
I started the Software Update Service, mirroring and activate ALL packages automagically. every package has a blue exclamation mark in the meantime - they are there in /usr/share/swupd/html.
I then point the client using WGM via a computer list > Preferences to http://server.inhouse.lan:8088/
After restarting the client, I see on the client in /Library/Managed Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist the client has got the settings I want it to have.
I then run Software Update (GUI/CLI doesn't matter) and get "You're software is up-to-date."
But it is not: when NOT using managed preferences, there are the to updates mentioned above.
If I set the client to use http://192.168.6.11:8080/ the GUI Software Update tells me: There is new software for your computer - but it doesn't show anything in the window. It's empty.
I also tried the hint with http://blabla.bla:8088/index.sucatalog. To no avail - "your software is up to date".
OK. Thanks for reading this. Now, does anyone see a mistake on my side? Something I am missing? Or should we conclude SUS on 10.4 server doesn't work with 10.5 clients - a bug?

I was able to point 10.5 clients to the 10.4 server. They downloaded all updates from my SUS that also where available via Apple at that time.
I'm not sure if there were any machine specific updates, but I think the security updates are, and that was what downloaded (as well as an iTunes update).

I don't see it's stated there 10.4 SUS would not work with 10.5 clients. It says 10.4 can't push which was different of my approach to make the client pull the update from a specified server.

Not true. I have a 10.4 OD Master with a managed group using the SUS Service on a 10.5 Server. The 10.5 Server is connected to the 10.4 Directory. DNS Services for both servers are on the 10.4 Server as is the DHCP Service. 10.4 and 10.5 Clients that bind to the 10.4 Server are updated using the 10.5 SUS with no problems at all. The only issue I've seen is 10.5 clients occasionally can't use the 10.5.2 Combo Update on the SUS Server. There is the 'cant expand package properly' error message. At first I thought this was because the latest Intel iMacs were able to update but not Leopard installed PPC models. One solution was to keep a manually downloaded .dmg of the 10.5.2 update on the Server and push it out using ARD or copying it locally and installing it that way. However earlier Intel models - occasionally - are also not updating - pre-dominantly first generation macbooks and macminis but every now and again some of the later Aluminium model iMacs.
This is an intermittent problem though and may be due to the small bandwidth that the SUS server is having to use to access apple's downloads server (1MB). When the SUS was on the 10.4 Server with a higher bandwidth connection (4-5MB) there was never any problems with the downloads but quite a few with the Service stopping itself and having to be restarted using the command line.
The amount downloaded for 10.5 SUS is greater (approx 13-16GB) than 10.4 SUS (approx 10-11GB) - obviously. It took 4-5 days for the 10.5 SUS to make available all the downloaded updates - obviously due to the 1MB connection but also there were problems with accessing the updates server at that time. I think this was because Leopard Server had not long been made available and like a lot others it was in a testing environment where all the services were being tried to see what was worked and what did not.

Basic troubleshooting steps oultlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.
You need to go through all steps in succession until your problem is solved. If going through ALL these steps fails to resolve your issue, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

I'm not concerned about sending to the long address list. I just can't get the email and window that says "cannot send emai using the server..." to go away. The default must be "retry", because although I cannot see the choices at the bottom of the window if I hit return it trys again... and then of course comes back with the very long pop up window that I cannot see the bottom of so I can tell it to quit trying...

I have a customer running a provider hosted app and in Sharepoint 2013. Things have been working fine but recently they keep experiencing an issue where the all the app parts on the page show the following error message. Does anyone have an idea what

I have checked the Sharepoint site using Fiddler and my X-SharePointHealthScore stays consistently on 1, I have even refreshed the site and had the "(429) Too Many Requests" error happen right in front of me whilst Fiddler is running and when I look at the
200 response for the Sharepoint site it is still showing "X-SharePointHealthScore: 1".
I assume because of this I do not need to make any of the changes suggested in your article above?
I have also been through the ULS logs and found the following 3 log entries that appear to relate to the issue but they do not really mean much to me so I am hoping that you can help:

SQL query runs too many times in SQL server Profiler

Hi Experts
I have designed a report using SQL database.Report is based on Add Command Object, View and Table.Which are link and gives desired output.
However it takes long time. In the SQL Sever profiler it shows that query is executing too many times.
When in the Add Command object I edit the query Say I write TOP 5000 then it executes once however if I write Add 5001 then I face the same behavior.
I have checked "Grouping on server" option in options.
Please Advice.

How adding group will help? I have to link this command objects with view and table.Also When I add "TOP 5000" in add command query it executes only 1 time in SQL query Profiler hower if edit that query to "TOP 5001" then it again it executes several time which is impacting the performance.

Too Many Files Open (Errno: 24) - HP Unix server

Hi All,
We have many processes (nearly 30) running on HP unix server. Among these 30 processes, 10 processes runs for every 15 mins and transfer files between NT server and UNIX server.
All these 10 processes are same processes. Only difference is, each one transfer files from/to different NT servers. During the file transfers, we are opening and closing the streams. But, we are not closing the file objects. Without closing the file objects, we are assigning NULL to the file objects after use. I read at many places that it is recommended to assign NULL to the file object as assigning null will be removed by garbage collector.
Coming to the issue..... after our processes runs for 1 or days, we are getting an error saying "java.io.FileNotFoundException: Too many open files (errno:24)" and the corresponding process is going down.
it seems, the setting specified to limit the file objects on UNIX server need to be increased. But, as we are closing all the streams, I don't think increasing the setting on UNIX will solve the problem.
Could any of you throw some light on this and let me know if you already have come across this type of issue before?
One more doubt I have is.... I read as ...... The file object limit set on UNIX is the sum of file objects as well as open sockets count. Do any can help me in letting me know what else will be considered as part of these fileobject count? I mean, whether the connection to DB from unix also are considered as part of these file object count?

Under Unix, sockets, named and unnamed pipes etc. all use file descriptors as teh open files.
Unix systems usually provide the /proc pseudo file system.
ls -l /proc/[process id]/fd
might yield something interesting.

I use BT yahoo mail with Thunderbird 24.6.0 in the last few days i've started getting this message when sending messages:
An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Too many messages. Please check the message and try again.
Now sometimes the messages are sent anyway and sometimes not. If I re-send sometimes it works and sometimes not. I've contacted BT 'tech support' who tell me there is nothing wrong with them or their servers and as webmail works ok they won't help. I strongly suspect it IS a BT issue, Any clues to fix this?

The message means BT are lying basically. I have just spent the best part of an hour on chasing what limits BT place on mail sending... the internet contains a void.
The closest thing I can locate is a BT rep here https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/E-Mail-message-limit/m-p/1045228/highlight/true#M17523 refusing to identify what limits they impose but advising their switch to critical path has more stringent controls. AFAIK Critical path is ca mail software solution sold by OpenWave Messaging http://owmessaging.com/
So your paying for a totally undefined service. Congratulations!

CFolder & SRM on same server that too be on same client

Hi,
We are using SRM 7.0 with PPS. In our case,both the C-folders(PLM suite-Add on component) as well as the SRM server are on the same box that too same client. So would we need to create the new RFC and Logical system for cFolders also. As we are having both the components (C-folders and SRM) on same server that too be on same client.

while i am doing the configuration in the system landscape node by defining the entry for the cfolder in this. System is not allowing me to do the same. System is giving an error that entry with this already exist. As I have already explain that my SRM and Cfolder are on the same server that too be on same client. So while I am doing this configuration one entry is already ther for SRM system with the same logical system.
Can you please give your suggestions on this.

Too many session in the AS java server node?

I have install a Netweaver JAVA portal system for customer , this is cluster system one CI and 10 DIs, I found there are too many active session in each server node , I konw , the user can login anyone instance through the web dispatcher , but I found nearly 3000 active session in each server node after a work day in average, and there are too many iterative session , sometime one user can have 30-40 session in each server node after a work day .
I think the memmory is critical if there are have too many session , and sometimes, the log off fution of portal can't work ,so I decided to set a time-out parameter of the session (4 hours),but this is active method to delete the session of the user ,no matter the user is working with system .
Who can tell me how to effective control and enhance user's session managment of Netweaver Java server .

Can't connect to Server - "too many users" after 10.8 install

After upgrading my Retina MBP, my Air, and my mid-2011 iMac (which acts as a file server) to Mountain Lion, I find I cannot consistently connect to the iMac server. Everything is done over an Airport Extreme wifi network, and there were no issues in 10.7. It usually happens 24-48 hours after a retstart, and a restart will fix it though that is inconvenient. The error given on the machine trying to connect in is "too many users" on the host (the iMac server). Any thoughts?

Me too... similar setup. MBPr, MBP and an old MB with a Mini/drobo as a file server. A reboot fixes it, but that's a pain if I'm not home.
I have noticed that I can usually share the screen even if I can't mount a drive, which helps, but still just another hurtle.

I see in fodler with CU3 updates, are four packages:
- SP1 Cumulative update 3 - x64 client update
- SP1 Cumulative update 3 - x86 client update
- SP1 Cumulative update 3 - server update
- SP1 Cumulative update 3 - console update
It will be stupid but... maybe I should deploy x64 client update package?
