How to install guide for oracle 10g in suse enterprise 9

Suse Enterprise linux 9 works great with 10g. I
didn't have to change anything on my install. I did
the 30day eval and Suse provided free technical
support for other issues i had installing.
Novell has ISV support 2nd to none when it comes to
enterprise app supprt - expect full Oracle
certification soon - however i've had 0 issues and
love the Enterprise 9 over RHEL big time.
Did you have any issues about Async IO? There was posts (@ SuSe) saying that kernel 2.6 (including SuSe ES9) is not compatible with Oracle, and they expected SP1 for SuSe ES9 to fix this problem.
Anyway, I am expecting much easier installation and support @ SuSe9 - esp. if they do what they promised - include 'oraini' rpm, all compatibility rpm's and ocfs into ServicePack disk (as they did for SLES8). It is interesting they (SuSe) makes much less noise about Oracle, but system is really oracle ready (SLES8) vs redHat - if we compare manual how to install, it will be 2 pages for SuSe (install SuSe ES8; install Sp3; /for evaluation versions only - no need for production SuSe Sp3/ verify and may be recompile hangcheck-timer module; install Oracle, edit /etc/sysconfig/oracle file and start 'rcoracle start) vs RedHat EL3 (install RHEL3; install 20 RPM's; install system patch; install oracle; replace 2 files; write out your own RC file; start Oracle manually; create your own file for cluster manager, etc etc...; change gcc, and so on...).
Strange, of course.

Try follow steps described in http://ivan.kartik.sk/install_ora9_suse.html (Suse ES 9 is very similar to Suse Profesional 9.2).
    or
    Install patch 2878462.

On SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, the installation will pass the operating system prerequisite checks if you change each 10 or 11 to 9 in the /etc/SuSE-release file. Ensure that you replace the original values in the /etc/SuSE-release file after the Oracle installation is complete.
Original value: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86)

  • Lenovo and Suse Enterprise Product Activation and Suse Update?

    Hello,
I have just bought an Ideapad S10e with Suse on it.
Can anybody help me with this two questions.
    1) I would like to activate my Suse product at the Suse website, where do I find my activation key?
    2) Can I update easily from Suse 10 to the new Suse 11, I have got Suse 10 with my new Lenovo.
Thanks a lot for any answer!

    Hi,
? Product Activation did hear that for the first time ?
and its not possible to upgrade direct...
the Suse 10 is not really up to date...
its better choice to delete it and starting from a scratch install all other linux if you want linux...
    i.e. Opensuse 11,
Linux Mint, Ubuntu 9.04 ... Archlinux..
    .and many more..
my favs are Ubuntu and Mint...
all function out of the box....

  • Need to login to remote X server on suse enterprise server 9 from mac

    hello,
I have the a powerbook G4 with the latest OS X installed. I also have X11 installed.
Can someone please tell me how I can login to a vnc server on a sles9 server from my mac laptop? I tried the browser way but the picture looks aweful. I'd like to use a X session from the sles9 server to my mac laptop.
    Thanks,
    Oskar

    Hi Oskar,
Thanks for the info on the browser method. I won't get to test it for a bit but it seems like a lot to ask of a browser, even if it does render images well. Which browser do you use?
Please forgive my manners; welcome to Apple Discussions. I don't know how much experience you have reading the Discussion but this one isn't touchy-feely. It's very easy to cut-and-paste from the terminal, especially Apple's, in which it can be done completely from the keyboard. Thus it almost seems prevarication to be vague.
    > I TRY the ssh -Y method
This is vague. Please post the command. Is X11 running when you do this?
    > It doesn't work.
This is more vague. In addition to the command, please post the output, and any entries in your console.log and the system.log that ensue.
    > it's running kde to I have kde& at the end of that line
When you login to the remote computer, please don't put a command in the line. Login to the machine to get shell access and then invoke the command. You might see some output that would otherwise be "hidden" in a remote log. What is this "kde" command? The usual command for starting KDE is "startkde."
I've never tried to forward KDE. It's not an application that runs in a window. I'm sure there would be no problem setting up the tunnel but it was hard enough to port KDE to run with Apple's X11. Thus I can easily see the potential for difficulties but I don't know of any problems and I actually think I remember someone saying they did it. You might try running X11 full screen instead of rootless.
    > Is there anything I should be doing on the suse server?
Do you mean besides configuring and starting the secure shell daemon? Yes, you might have to make a hole in the firewall. There should be a suse "sysadmin" way to configure it but if you have to edit the sshd_config file and invoke sshd yourself, we can probably help with that.
    > also, chicken of the vnc doesn't work well with sles
    vnc server.
That probably means you don't have the bandwidth for it. I know that using CotVNC can be almost like being at the machine and Linux is generally fast even on old hardware. That's all the more reason to get X window forwarding working.
If you can't find the information to diagnose the problem with secure shell in the logs, you can also invoke secure shell with the "-vvv" option. That will dump a maximal amount of diagnostic information.

  • SUSE Enterprise 11 support

    Hi,
I see Novell has finally released SLES 11. http://www.novell.com/linux
Can we expect Oracle 11g officially supported in the next 6 months? Any elaboration would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Dave

I suggest you contact Novell. I've found that it's usually the vendor that runs through the certification suite.
Besides, Oracle almost never goes back to certify a released software f the OS vendor has released an upgrade.

Maybe I just downloaded the wrong version of Oracle?
The main download page is at:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/index.html
I selected entry "Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) for Linux x86" (the one directly below the Windows version):
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/htdocs/10201linuxsoft.html
The size of the file^^ is 668,734,007 bytes.
Or should i have downloaded entry "Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.2) for z/Linux":
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/htdocs/10202zlinuxsoft.html
The size of the file^^ is 838,518,746 bytes.
By the way, all these versions on the main page should have some kind of description, something like "This is the Linux Version for most standard 32Bit single and multiprocessor Intel compatible servers."
Well, since I'm completely stuck now with SUSE 10.1, is there any way to make the Oracle installer go on that SUSE version? Maybe SUSE can pretend to be version 9... but how do I achieve something freaky as this?
Thanks for any help, comments, suggestions...

BTW, I think it's bad practice by Oracle not supporting SUSE 10.1.Actually, I think it is good practise for Oracle not to certify the public beta versions of an operating system.
Please remember that Fedora and SuSE Linux are cycled every 6-8 months, making then truly unstable for commercial purposes. IN addition, they are often desupported by the comminuty within 2-3 years, forcing upgrades. And finally, Both Red Hat and SuSE/Novell publically state that these are 'proving grounds for new features' (meaning they are beta).
Certification means that Oracle will invest heavily and train people on the specific operating system and work with the operating system supplier, 24x7 if needed, to make sure that customers will continue in production. I am not aware that the SuSE Linux or Fedora supporters are willing to put in 24x7 support they way the Red Hat and SuSE Enterprise groups are.
This does not imply the public OSs are bad. It just means that Oracle (and I) believe they are unsuited for commercial, business mission critical, immediate support required, environments.
By the way, I have the combination of Oracle10g and SuSE Linux 10.1 working, and it works well. However, I did need to make sure that the libraries to which Oracle10g was compiled are available in the OS.
Or maybe Sybase does better.... ;-pNot if the [glibc] libraries are incompatible. Nor does PostgreSQL nor MySQL.

  • Oracle RAC on Suse 9.1 ?

    Hi Linux Forum,
For the purpose of a conference demonstration in the beginning of November - this year ;-) - I am planning to set up an Oracle RAC with 10g.
It would be really nice to do this setup on SuSe 9.1 with the 2.6 kernel.
My question is now as simple as:
Should I just forget it, since Oracle RAC does not work with a 2.6 kernel, or could I expect to reach the goal before november?

I would suggest to use Suse Enterprise Edition (30 day eval available) if your committed to suse - i have gotten it to work here.
Otherwise, the easiest path is to use WhiteBox or CentOS linux - both are free versions of Redhat enterprise linux.
Centos.com i think (or .org) - just google for CentOS linux or whitebox linux. THat way you can simply follow the setup guides oracle & redhat provide

  • Ocfs for new suse kernel 2.4.21-203

    Hi!
We arecurrently evaluating 9.2 RAC on Linux (SuSE Enterprise Server 8 / United Linux. We have kernel 2.4.21-198-smp and there was an rpm ocfs-2.4.21.198-1.0.11-1.i586.rpm on http://oss.oracle.com/projects/ocfs for this kernel. Now SuSE has recomended an update to kernel 2.4.21.203 because of some recent security issues. But where do I get the (supported) rpm for this ? Do I have to uninstall the ocfs-2.4.21.198 before updating the kernel ?
    TIA, Roland Steinmeyer

Hi, please send me the error log file,
    Thanks.

  • BI on Open SuSE 10.2

    Dear all,
how can install Oralce BI suite EE on on Open SuSE 10.2 Linux. It is only support SuSE Enterprise Edition. Is there any way to work it out.
    Thanks,

It probably isn't visible by your oracle environment, please verify the value of your LD_LIBRARY_PATH, PATH, and ORACLE_HOME environment variables.
