    Hi Hemendra,
Thanks for your reply. Actually i am trying to do two things here. First i am creating sub-folders using following code. And then trying to assign individual group permission on these sub-folders using following Powershell script. Now problem is when i am
creating sub-folders, its also inheriting all the parent permission. Lets say i have customer folder name "Pepsi" and it has 4 sub-folders (like Account Management, Legal Drafts, Executed.. etc) . Now i want to assign individual group permission to each Sub-folder
but root folder (Pepsi) should remain all the parent permissions. i did try to remove the permission first and then assigned permission to sub-folders. i was able to assign individual group permission to sub-folders but problem is, its also assigning Limited
Access to the root folder. so basically i cannot see the folder as the root folder has limited access. Please let me know how can achieve that.

  • Access root folders in finder

Is it possible to access root folders in the finder window instead of using terminal

With the Finder active, from the File menu, select Find... .
In the Find window that opens, in the section under the heading "Search for items whose:", click the Name pull-down menu and select Visibility. The options in the next pull-down menu to the right will change accordingly; select either invisible items or visible and invisible items as you prefer.
You can make invisible folders visible all the time (not recommended) using TinkerTool
You can also make make .hidden things visible by Booting from another drive.
You can hide things selectively using AltoMac

  • What r the default permissions for rooted folders (/Applications & etc.)?

    Hi.
i've got corrupted attributes for /Applications folder (no user/no group owner), which were not corrected with disk utility Repair permissions.
So i'd like to correct them manually.
Could anyone tell me about default attributes for rooted folders? (/Applications, /Library, /System and etc.)
Or may be a link to some manual where i could find that out?
    Thank you in advance!

    from my notes:
The sticky bit should be set on the root "/" folder of the drive.
The correct permissions for the root drive are
    owner:root, group:admin, chmod:1775
#these must be set in single user mode, you cannot set these while booted#
    Boot into single user mode:
    mount -uw /
    chown root:admin /
    chmod 1775 /
    reboot
After rebooting Set the following Directory permissions:
    /Applications; root:admin, chmod 0775
    /Developer; root:admin, chmod 0775
    /Library; root:admin, chmod 1775
    /System; root:wheel, chmod 0755
    /Users; root:admin, chmod 0755
Run the following commands on the /Applications directory:
    sudo chmod -R -N /Applications
#clears out any ACL's, there should be no ACL's on your apps#
    sudo chown -R :admin /Applications/*
#Sets group to admin on all your apps note: do NOT change owner.#

  • Finder Windows Always Locked - After Permission Change

    Hello.
I noticed that other users on my computer had access to some folders (those I created) within my home directory. I didn't want this to be the case so I set permissions for my home directory and did "Apply to all items" so that the permissions are now "Me - Read & Write" and "everyone - Write only (Drop Box)." I am an administrator on the computer.
Now, every time I do a "get info" on a folder I have to unlock it by typing in my password, whereas before the get info windows were unlocked. I'm not positive the permission change is what cased the locked Finder windows, but I think that is what caused it. Also, I tried unlocking the folder and then doing the "apply to enclosed items" but that did not help.
    Thanks for any help,
    KK

    1. Use the "apply to enclosed items" option with great care. Not all items in your home folder should have the same settings, & certainly you would not normally want everyone to be able to write to them all, even if they can't read what they put there!
    2. AFAIK, in Leopard the lock at the bottom of the Get Info window always is in the locked state when the window is first opened, regardless of who owns the item it shows. Generally, you only need to unlock it with an admin password to make sharing & permissions changes. If you own the file, you should be able to (for instance) add Spotlight comments or change the name without needing to unlock it. IOW, the lock is for the sharing & permissions section, not the entire window.

  • /dev/null file permission changes frequently

    Hi,
We are experiencing file permission change issue frequently for the
    following files:
    root@domain5 # ls -l /devices/pseudo/mm@0:null
    crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 13, 2 Apr 22 2009
    /devices/pseudo/mm@0:null
    root@domain5 # ls -l /dev/null
    crw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 13, 2 Oct 25 07:01 /dev/null
By default, above is the file permission settings. If the file permission
changes, it will look like as below:
    root@domain5 # ls -l /devices/pseudo/mm@0:null
    cr--r--r-- 1 root sys 13, 2 Apr 22 2009
    /devices/pseudo/mm@0:null
    root@domain5 # ls -l /dev/null
    cr--r--r-- 1 root sys 13, 2 Oct 25 07:01 /dev/null
Due to this file permission change the script which uses this file loose
the write permission and the script fails. To fix this issue, we will be
manually changing the permission. Can you please help me to know the cause for
    this file permission change.
    Thanks,
    Ram.

You need to correlate any changes on the system to when you have the problem, or see the date on /dev/null change. Software packages can change this, applications can change this, sometimes even patch installs.
    Even certain administrative practices.
Here's one example, where touching a vendor software-created printer config with native Solaris admintool would change /dev/null permissions
    http://www.rootunix.org/SOLARIS/printFAQ.txt
    10) ONLY ROOT CAN SEND PRINT JOBS:
This problem is caused by network spooling software that for a
network printer that uses /dev/null for the printer device. The
software monitors the queue and spools the print requests over the
network to the printer. If the printer setup is modified in any
way with Admintool, the printer device (/dev/null) permissions will
    change to 600 owner lp.

  • WebDAV how to make root folders read only but contents writable

Hi everyone.. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out..
    1 PERMISSIONS
I have a working WebDAV server. In each realm (or user account) they have a setup that mocks their home folder, ie, Documents, Movies, Websites, etc.
How can I modify the permissions so that these root folders cannot be deleted, but they can obviously have items added/deleted inside of them?
    2 QUOTAS
Is there anyway to add quotas to WebDav accounts?
    Thanks a lot!
    -Mel

    sorry guys..
Just figured out how to sort out the permissions.. You need to modify the WWW user the way you would normally set the standard user's permissions..
Any help on setting the quotas?
    Thanks!

  • Desktop permission changes

I would like some help regarding permissions. In our office, each employee uses their own iMac and we are on a small Ethernet network. There are four iMacs and each is running Snow Leopard. I have configured it so that each iMac is sharing its desktop. In our office workflow, my co-workers and I intuitively share files by dropping them onto each other's desktops. No need to hunt in our drop boxes which are buried a few levels.
ISSUE: When I put a file onto a co-worker's desktop, the file permission changes to 'nobody'. If they continue to work on the file and try to save it, they can't. So in order to continue working on a file they have to 'Get Info' first and change the permissions to 'Read & Write' for themselves. However, if I ask my co-worker to get the file from my desktop, the file's permissions are fine and they can open, modified, and save the file without a problem.
QUESTION: Is there a way to configure our settings so that files can be put onto the desktop's of other co-workers without having to mess with the permissions each time? Why does it work one way (get) but not the other way (put)?

You don't have permissions to modify an item you do not own.  When you copy a file to another account, it keeps your ownership and permissions, which means only you can write to it.  When another user copies your files, they own the copies, which lets them write to it (you might not have noticed, but you won't have permission to write to their copies, either).
You can use ACL (Access Control List) entries to give additional permissions - each user's Drop Box folder is also set up this way.

  • Unable to save permission changes in templates in win 2012

    Hi,
PKI set up of (2003 and 2008) based Sub CA and 2003 based AD ( with schema version supporting 2008) is running in the enviornment. Now CA is migrating to 2012 setup. When i try to create template and make permission changes, it says " unable to save
permission changes. Directory object not found". When i duplicate and save the template with name change and wait for 10-15 min and then open that template again and make permission changes, it works.
Just wanted to know if this is because of some feature issue and will it get resolved if AD is upgraded to 2012 schema.
    Thanks

Also, I checked with my AD person. They are also saying that it can be because of current DC architecture and may be a normal thing. Currently they have 2003 AD  and they will upgrade schema version for 2012 to see if that makes any change.
As Brian said, this is likely due to replication delays. Updating the
schema version is not likely going to resolve this. If you know how to work
around the issue then I wouldn't worry about it too much. Creating new
certificate templates should not be a frequent task.

  • Search by folder name? Monitor folders for changes?

Im a long time PC user that LOVED how Picasa automatically indexed any locations that I told it to keep track of. I just got Aperture - but so far I am utterly disappointed in the search function.
When I used to import all of my photos the folder that each import would go under would be the events title.
For instance if I shot a wedding I would name the folder "John Smith" because in picasa I could just search for "Smith" and it would have all of the files in that folder as results - regardless of their metadata.
So here I am with a 2 week old Macbook that I love - but I cant find any of the photos that I want to find.
My library has roughly 40K images - so without the ability to search by folder names it takes me forever to find the files I am looking for.
*Surely I am an idiot and just dont know how to search by folder name - can someone enlighten me?*
Also - is it possible for Aperture to monitor certain folders for changes - for instance if I save something to my library folder from photoshop - do I then have to import that one file I just saved? Picasa would just display it under the folder its in - is there any programs for Macs that behave like this?

aperture can indeed search on the project title. a little harder to find in the filter dialog, but it is there.
but again, you'll have to import your data differently than i think you did the first time.
i'm sorry that you're not happy with Aperture doing what you want, but then again, you're upset because it doesn't work with you're old folder structure. Not every application can be expected to be designed for every possible methodology that someone used to manage their existing data. It was set up to be used more visually than your old method and if you can't take the time to organize your photos when you import them to Aperture, then you're right, it probably isn't for you.
i would suggest you watch the tutorial on searching to see all of the additional metadata you can search by, maybe it would help in some way.... but if not, good luck with LR

  • Device id of the root file system changes

I have noticed that sometimes the device id of the root file system changes (it typically get incremented by one). This seems to happen after an abnormal shutdown. After a normal shutdown and reboot the device id reverts back to what it was previously.
/ is on a local disk (not NFS or anything like that) and I'm talking about the device id you can obtain via the following command:
    stat / | cut -d' ' -f1
Any idea why this is happening?

boot up a (any) live CD, cp -a, generate a new grub.cfg/adjust menu.lst and don't forget to update your fstab - done.
    Just done it myself.

  • Finder only shows root folders, no folders or files within those

2010 Mac mini. For some reason, Finder now only shows root folders such as Music, Library, Movies, Pictures, Downloads, Documents, etc.
But when I open those folders, there is nothing contained INSIDE them. They appear empty.
I know there ARE files and folders inside of these, but for some reason they do not show.
I can navigate to these files via Terminal without issue.
Where did all my folders and files go in Finder and why are they not showing?
FYI, Finder shows a spinning wheel of dashes in the bottom right constantly.

I diagnosed the problem to using autofs. I have edited my /etc/fstab file to have a couple of afp entries, but when these shares are not available, it hangs the Finder on the computer the Mac mini. Why is this? I thought the whole reason to use autofs and the fstab file was to automount shares WHEN AVAILABLE.
Any insight to this behavior of autofs?

  • Un-modified folders with changed modification dates

I have several folders that I have not touched for months, and suddenly, they all have the same modification date & time. The files inside the folders have the correct dates on them (some are two years old).
This seems to be happening with only one folder, which itself is in the Documents folder. There is an alias to it on the sidebar. Inside that folder, just today, 53 folders all changed their modification dates with out me even looking at them!
This is highly annoying, as it is a folder in which I store jobs that I have completed. Any solutions?

This was the result of a syncing application, not Mac OS. Removed application, problem solved.
