Suspect Bug in iPhoto 9.4 in OS X 10.8.2

The first time I used the iPhoto 9.4 red-eye reduction tool after updated to OS X 10.8.2 I noticed iPhoto was not saving the changes. I posted a Help request under the iPhoto topic
Help saving red-eye edits

and have not been able to correct the problem. I wonder if the probem is unique to my setup or is a bug recently introduced with OS X 10.8.2?
My issse is the red-eye reduction tool works but the Done button does not seem to be saving the changes to the picture in the Evets.
The test I have been doing is to edit a picture in an Event using the red-eye reduction tool, click on Done to save and then try to mail the picture by dragging the edited version of the picture to the Mail dock icon.  The picture that shows up in Mail is the orginal - not the saved version.

  • Bug in iPhoto v6 when using Mail

Bug in image quality when sending photos with Mail.
    Description:
I click on Email icon in iPhoto, and then choose Medium as the quality, that's when iPhoto tells me that the Photo Count = 1, and Estimated Size = 122Kb. And then the Mail app opens, and I see the same photo inside the message composition window, and now Mail tells me that the Message Size = 55Kb (on the status line at the bottom). And When I send that photo to myself, I receive a photo which is about 40Kb in size, and the photo looks just terrible... how can it look good at 640x480 with only 40Kb?
Is this a bug, or I can change the jpeg quality somewhere? My friend has a 2-year old iMac with iPhoto 5 and when she sends me pictures the same Medium size they are closer to 100Kb each
We did a little test: I sent her the same photo in original size, and then she sent me back the Medium Size, and it was around 90Kb. How can I fix/change this, or am I cursed by this BUG in iPhoto v. 6? or a bug in Mail?
    Thanks.
MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Misio:
Even though iPhoto said the final size would be 122 KB for a medium size, my test, a 4.2 MB file came in at 68 KB. Another test with a 2 MB file was estimated at 122 KB but came in around the 68 KB size. I think the 122 kb value is hard coded into the application as an approximation only before compressing and not really a bug. Maybe a poor approximation, however.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can you confirm this Faces bug in iPhoto '11?

I have created an Smart Album "unnamed faces" which should show all photos with "unnamed" faces. It shows about 2,500 of my about 24,000 photos. Some of these have been added recently, some are in the library since the old iPhoto '08 days. I see that some of them often "forget" that I have already rotated them. Even the face frames stay unrotated and are sometimes converted from squares to rectangles. But all this doesn't really matter.
This is what I see as a bug: When I edit such a photo in the Smart Album, it e.g. shows one named face and "1 unnamed". I then rotate the image to have it in the desired portrait or landscape view, remove the wrong, rectangled and named face frame and name the unnamed, correctly placed square face frame with the desired person's name.
Whatever I do next, photos treated this way still tell me they would have 1 named and 1 unnamed face frame. I only see the named, square frame, because I have deleted the old, wrong and rectangled frame before.
Even more strange: When I set the Smart Album parameters like this:
it shows these "damaged" images, which optically only have one named face frame left. The (translated) settings are: "All" conditions: "Face is unnamed" && "Face is not unnamed".
This is really weird and I have no idea how to fix it except deleting and re-importing the images.
PS: Yes, I have already even tried all options of iPhoto Library Manager without success for this issue.

    Back to your original Library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Huge bug in iPhoto since 9.3

I used my iMac with Snow Leopard and iPhoto 9.2 and all was fine. Last Summer I bought my MB Retina with Mountain Lion and so I was able to use iPhoto 9.3. Several months I imported photos and then I installed aperture 3. I found out, that the focusing points are missing on all photos that are imported with iPhoto 9.3 or later. All photos imported with 9.2 or earlier were fine.
So I deleted all photos since summer and imported them again with Aperture. Luckily I'm not trusting Apple that much, so I stored all my original photos additional to an extra harddrive outside iPhoto.
I told the bug to the support, but it looks like, no one cares about. I've just updated to 9.4.3 and the bug is still there.

    Hello Harry468,
please check the following, if iPhoto realy destroys the your photo data upon import, or if the problem is at any other point:
    open Finder
rightclick on the iPhoto Library ->> leftclick show contents
you are now within the iPhoto Library
search the Masters or Original folder
within one of this folders you find your events and within the events the single photos
COPY one of these photos directly to the desktop and import
    it directly from Aperture..
    Are Focus Points correctly shown?
If yes, then iPhoto doesn´t destroy the data, but nevertheless the old workflow can´t be used, because importing to iPhoto seems to make it impossible to use the Points in Aperture.
And yes, I would also call this a bug, even if there are workarounds.

  • BUG: iPhoto 9 Slideshow - Text Slide Bugs and iPhoto Library Corruption

I was wondering if anyone else has run into the following issues:
I have had multiple issues with iPhoto crashing, stop responding, and database corruption where I cannot open iPhoto. These issues all began when I tried to use the new themed slideshow in iPhoto v9.1. Previously, I had only used iPhoto to create basic slideshows with iPhoto v7.x. I was hoping that I would be able to create my masterpiece in iPhoto 11 (v9.1) but I have only been frustrated by my attempts so far.
What should have been a 3 - 4 hour operation has become a 20 hour nightmare and I still don't have a slideshow to show for my efforts. This has been one of my most disappointing uses of Apple software ever.
Repeatable, reproducible bugs that I have run into include:
    1. Deleting a photo that appears in the timeline before a sub-title causes havoc with subsequent sub-titles (a.k.a. Text Slides). Subsequent subtitles are randomly copied to pictures following the one it was assigned to. Further, there is no subtitle icon in the timeline and the photos have to be manually modified to eliminate the subtitle. Work around is click the "Text Slide" button
    2. Zooming and/or image placement is not preserved and not visible when previewed, exported, or iPhoto is closed and then reopened.
    3. The iPhoto Library becomes corrupt and permissions problems prevent me from working with my photos. This happens while working on slideshow. I have had to rebuild my library and repair permissions no less than five times since I started working on my slideshow.

iPhoto's slideshow feature is fine but no tool for a "masterpiece".
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie, on every Mac sold, as is iDVD.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter $29
    PhotoToMovie $49.95
    PulpMotion $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Express $199
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.
However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

  • Major Bug in iPhoto '11 -- Blurry Photos in Books

I spent the last week putting together a photo book as a Christmas gift for my wife. I was just about to hit the Purchase Book button when I noticed that several of the photos looked blurry. I attempted to double-click on them to examine them closely, but nothing happened. I left the book layout area and into the album where the individual photos were. When I attempted to edit the photo, I got the dreaded exclamation point -- iPhoto had lost track of the original photos.
I tried rebuilding the database by holding down the Command & Option keys during launch, but after a very lengthy rebuilding process, the photos were still blurry. Luckily, I realized that the problem photos were those that I had used the "Enhance" feature in iPhoto's edit area. By clicking the "Revert to Original" button at the bottom right (or right-clicking), iPhoto was able to rediscover a high-resoultion version of the photo (pre-Enhancement).
It was a pain to go through over 100 photos and manually click the "Revert to Original" button, but at least I got my sharp, high-resolution photos back. Spending a week and $50 on a book of blurry photos would have been bitter disappointment, not to mention a lousy Christmas gift.

    Hi Larry,
    Thanks for your reply,
I did a rebuild of the library, but the error remained.
To answer the issues you have with my post:
1/ My post is not about books, but the original posting dug deeper and got to the issue of editing photos in iPhoto and having the same problems as I experienced and described. Exporting a photo in a book or in an email, what ever export/production mode is, it came down to a problem of photo Edit in iPhoto.
2/ Also, I found this post via googling "iphoto bug when editing photos". It is not the first time a thread is picked up a couple of months later, or is it ?
3/ Also, on "the "sharing" by email works but is failing as well"
Indeed the sharing by email works, that is the photo gets exported to the email, ie mail is activated and the photo is composed in email but in the email, as I mentioned, "the photo has a serious quality loss and is blurred, though in the Edit Tab/mode it is still full quality and sharp."
Thanks again for your reply and help.
    Best
    Tom

  • BUGS in iPhoto 6 if upgrading to OSX Leopard

FYI - I recently upgraded and noticed the following bugs when using iPhoto.
    1. I used to be able to drag and drop thumbnail images from the iPhoto browser onto my Photoshop icon and the respective images would then launch in Photoshop. This no longer works and is very annoying as I do all my image editing in Photoshop since it is more powerful than iPhoto.
    2. When I try to multiselect images to email, iPhoto shows me (quickly) a status bar but then does not launch the images in a new email. It just does nothing. This appears to be a new bug.

    keara
    How did you upgrade?
    1. Re-install Photoshop - if you did anything else to upgrade then a chunk of Photoshop that deals with Applescripts is left out, and Applescript is how this process works. By the way: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically.
    2. Similarly, this process is also handled by Applescript, so it suggests that somewhere in your install method, your Scripting functions got damaged.

  • BUG REPORT : iPhoto 7.0.2

    Hi,
I've noticed this already a couple of times.
-Create a web gallery and publish it.
    - Then change something, add a picture or change the order of pictures.
-> What you will see is that you get duplicates in the gallery view. Closing and re-opening iPhoto sometime helps but sometimes it even makes it worse. the good thing is, it does not cause trouble in the published version on the web, but it's very disturbing when you try to make change to the order of the pictures for example. I have an web gallery, where most of the pictures appear already 5 times.
    Can anyone confirm this issue?

  • Page counter bug in iPhoto Book

I have created 98 pages in a new photo book. When I try to add the last two pages, I get an error message: "Unable to Add Page" "This book already contains 100 pages. Additional pages cannot be added until an existing page is removed."
This is the first time I am trying to create a new book using iPhoto '11 (Version 9.1 (475)).
Obviously the programmer who created this was unable to figure out how to count pages. Does anybody know how to get around this software bug?

Backup the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Application Support/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Bug in iphoto, when i scrolled down the photos went disappear.

the photos when disappear when i scroll down, some of them are appearing while some are not. there's means to have a bug. what should i do?

    nercv:
It's not a but but probably a problem with ownership and permissions on the image files. Try the following: download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.

  • Roundtrip editing with Photoshop - bug in iPhoto :-(

I've setup Photoshop as external editor. Opening the photo in Photoshop works fine. I save as .jpg. But iPhoto doesn't seem to recognize the changed photo. And continues to show the edited photo in it's original state. Actually showing it twice. But not with the edits.
Now I looked at the folders. iPhoto 11 has the folder Masters for the pictures, but the external editing pics go through the folder Previews. And hence saving ends up in Previews. Since Masters is a hidden folder; you can't even save the new jpg file there. Looks like a bug to me...
The external option - save as, and reimport is just a pain... that I can't recommend to anyone in my family. I personally use Lightroom + Photoshop for myself, and it works like a charm.

Sorry, but it is one of the above.
That's a setting in Photoshop. It's defaulting to psd for saving, so when you "flatten... so it can be saved as a JPG" you're doing a Save As.

  • Bug using iPhoto on Macbook Pro Retina

    Hi Guys,
    First post.
I have the new Macbook Pro Retina 13"
Whenever I use iPhoto, as soon as I go to another program and come back it takes me to "Last import" folder regardless of where I was.
Is there a fix for this bug? It's really annoying

Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the new library doesn't work properly try this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
In either case your current library will be untouched for further testing if necessary.

  • BUGS - Mine or "Ours" - Share & Compare Your Suspected Bugs.

Plenty of bugs are to be expected with any significant software upgrade, and to be an early adopter is to welcome such little devils into your digital workflow. One of the best things to do is to take an extra 20 seconds and type a snippet into the Apple Crash Reporter regarding what you were doing prior to the problem. The more feedback Apple gets, the more bugs will disappear with each update.
In the interim, we have helpful forums like this one to help us troubleshoot the balance between notions of what Leopard is doing wrong versus what we (or someone else's application, hardware, etc) might be doing wrong.
If you stumbled on this entry and have 30-60 seconds to spare, I'm sure some of us might benefit from being able to compare the lists of hiccups we've been encountering since upgrading to Leopard, to the lists of other early adopters and the bumps they've picked up on. What's more, some of us might further get an idea if it's Leopard's issue or something elses. (or if anyone knows of an url pointing to a similar compendium that would be great!)
For what it's worth, here's my weeks worth of possible Leo hiccups (I'll add as more arise):
    {specs: +canon pixma ip6000D, canoscan lide60, mouseworks trackball, external usb2.0 hdds, wacom cte-440,+ most common apps +omni-applications, iwork '08, GarageBand, iPhoto, Safari, Firefox, Adobe CS3, iTunes, Yep, Quicksilver, Quickeys, Textexpander, Textmate, Finder, Edgies, modo, maya, (other video and audio apps+)}
    *1. Spaces*
I've configured certain applications to show up on specific spaces along with some apps to show up on all spaces. For about two hours, whenever I ⌘Tab to an application that is specified to display on a different space, Spaces will kindly switch to the respective space to show the app. A few hours later (on numerous occasions), I'll eventually hit ⌘Tab to switch to an app that is assigned to different space, Spaces will not switch - while it will show the app name in the menubar, the windows and palettes of any nonlocal app will not display. (The real question might be what am I habitually doing/launching/adjusting/etc every couple hours that could be the culprit?)
More when I get time and thanks to anyone else who might share and compare notes. 200711021833Fri

Our developers and our consultancy clientele have struggle to find any logical use for Spaces.app. We've come off as rather dim when trying to explain what the company whose product we highly recommend was thinking in regards to this obtuse implentation. ⌘Tab and Exposé are extremely sufficient for navigating between applications, why anyone would want to add Spaces to that mix, simply to separate their applications is beyond any of us. Users are confused as to why they cannot organize their spaces according to tasks or activities in order to truly leverage the power of virtual desktops.
    e.g.,
    • Space 1 for correspondence and management tasks could be assigned:
    Safari
    iCal
    Mail
    Address Book
    • Space 2 for web development could be assigned:
    Safari
    Dreamweaver
    Textmate
    • Space 3 open for an alternative programming or scripting task would have assigned:
    Safari
    Textmate
    Terminal
In cases where the same application appears in multiple spaces, switching to that application will not transport the user away from the current space and display the open windows for that application in a different space, instead it will switch to that application and remain in the current space, allowing the user to open a new window and load different files or content than those that appear in the other spaces in which that app resides.
