Suspect hack or advert interference?? OS x incompatabilities?

iPad acting irradically to scroll commands, requires double tapping on boxes after selected. Can't unset Voice descriptions of all commands and selections???

You have VoiceOver turned on.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4064
If VoiceOver is on and you want to turn it off from the device instead of from iTunes, remember that a double-tap acts like a single tap and you need to use three fingers to scroll when VoiceOver is on:
Press Home.
Tap Settings. Then double-tap Settings.
Tap General. Then double-tap General.
Use three fingers on the screen to scroll to Accessibility.
Tap Accessibility. Then double-tap Accessibility.
Tap VoiceOver. Then double-tap VoiceOver.
Tap "On" next to VoiceOver. Then double-tap "On" to turn it off.

  • Suspect hacking

I am posting on behalf of a friend who thinks that her BT home hub has been hacked.  She has had suspicions for a while as a nosey neighbour always seems to know far more about her activities than he or she should do.  The person under suspicion lives very close by (ie within wifi range) and has expert IT skills.
Earlier today my friend logged onto her BT home hub manager and found a list of 5 devices on her DHCP table one of which is an ipad touch (she does not own one but her neighbour does) and another is an iphone called XXXsiphone where XXX is the first name of the person under suspicion.  Is this proof that her network has been hacked and what action should my friend now take?  The really odd thing is that when she navigated away from that part of the webpage and then went back to it, 4 of the 5 devices on the list had vansihed and the only device left was her own pc.  Can anyone explain what is going on here??
Any advice really appreciated.  My friends neighbour is making her life a misery.  She is now paranoid about doing any of her own investigations as she feels all her online activity and phone calls are being snooped on.
    Thanks

Rottie, you are not right about the friend being responsible for somebody who has hacked into her account and carried out anything illegal. Look how many "famous" prosecutions there have been for hacking into somebody's accounts.
The fact that hacking into an account or in this case a router is illegal would mitigate her responsibility as long as it could be proved that another person did indeed hack into the account and did in do something illegal.
The Communications Act 2003 section 125 might cover it

  • BT Infinity - service degraded following outage. ...

    Dear All
I experienced an outage on Sunday lasting from sometime on Sunday afternoon all the way through until the early hours of Monday morning.  Flashing orange light on BT Home Hub 5 router.
Prior to last Sunday - my download speed was 41Mb and my upload speed was 7Mb.
Spoke to Broadband and Technical Helpdesk in India on Sunday evening who booked an engineer appointment for Tuesday 6th January 2015.
I noted on Monday morning that my HomeHub 5 was reporting that the connection had re-established however download had dropped by 4Mb and upload had dropped 5Mb.
Tuesday 6th January 2015 - I had to take an unpaid day off work to accomodate the engineer.  Called Broadband and Technical Helpdesk in India on Tuesday morning at 8:30am to confirm that the engineer was still booked, at which time I could have still gone to work.  Stayed in all day - engineer didn't turn up.
After long calls and tests with Broadband and Technical Helpdesk in India on Tuesday afternon I requested an engineer which was declined.  I was advised that a manager (provided with a name) would call me back today (Wednesday 7th January 2015).  No call back.
More long calls with Broadband and Technical Helpdesk in India this evening.  After various line tests and checks, I was advised that there wasn't anything they could do.  Requested an engineer.  Declined.
Something happened to my BT Infinity connection on Sunday, and I suspect physical modification or interference either at the cabinet or in between my building and the cabinet.
I would be very grateful if someone could please advise how I can request an engineer to come and review the physical aspects of my line including the cabinet presentation.  My connection was perfect before Sunday, for 10 months.
    Many thanks.

I am using the standard BT issued equipment and cable from the BT wall socket to the BT Home Hub 5 router.
The fact is that something physical has changed and this appears to be associated with the outage which I experienced on Sunday.
I am expecting a procedural return call from Broadband and Technical Helpdesk in India however I expect this to be purely procedural with no change or help.  But then again, the original assigned engineer did not turn up and I did not receive an arranged call yesterday as promised by the previous technical representative.
Could anyone answer the following questions:
    - Given that this service is critical to my day to day work, I would be willing to pay for an engineer (even though I didn't cause the problem), as the cost of slow upload access is probably in excess of the cost of a BT engineer.
    - Is it possible to cancel this service and order a new service?  I can live without broadband for a couple of weeks by working in a central London office, knowing that a new BT Infinity provision will provide my previous connection speed.
    Many thanks

  • Please help me with this time capsule! Really let me down!

So first thanks for looking into this. I bought the TC from london but i live in Malta so i cannot go to apple store (that is why I need your help guys).
This is what happened in brief:
-Removed my existing router and managed to connect to internet (imac) via time capsule
-Tried to setup and managed and then started first back up
-It had to back up 179GB and like 2 GB was backed up already... i was like updating the details using airport utility and set up a password for my network... because the details updated time capsule refreshed and back up stopped
-Since then it was giving me the error that cannot connect due to network error
-It had like 3GB missing and I deleted that (moved file into trash) so it was like I refreshed it to start over with brand new back up
-Now I have managed to start it backing up again (it's so slow however) but as Im typing this... its backing up but the internet connection is getting lost every 1 minute and i have to go to airport from the bar and chose the network again
-I will not stay up all night waiting for it to finish so I already know what is going to happen... when I wake up I will see (again) the message that connection was lost (since I will not be awake refreshing and selecting the network every minute)
I am so dissapointed/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png The fact that apparently i have stopped the fist back up (which was going well + fast) caused all these problems.
How do you actually reset/restore/format the TC to get it as brand new? I think that will solve the problem...
As I've told you guys you're my only hope. No apple store here
Thanks before hand and will look forward for the answer in the morning/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png
    Cheers & Hpy NY

launch Airport Utility and under disk erase the TC hard drive(you seem to not have much value on it anyway) then if you have to change the name of the disk.
if you can connect TC to your computer thru ethernet connection and not wireless. 179 gigs is a lot of data to move. Ethernet should do you about 1.5 hrs to 2 hrs for the Time Machine backup.
Concerning the wireless problem I'd suspect some type of interference causing the disconnection. It can be just about anything for example, locating the TC too close to another router, vonage, computer, metal objects blocking or too near, TC location thru too many walls especially in N mode.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Calls garbled or dropped when standing too close to wifi router

I'm having a problem with dropped calls that I could never figure out. Until I finally noticed the pattern. It seems that whenever I'm close to my Linksys router (even though I'll have full bars) my iPhone 3G calls will start to get a bit garbled. It sounds like the signal has bad reception. In a few cases all of the voices literally start to sound pretty close to a fax machine, you can still make out that there is a voice, just can't understand it. Once the "garbled" effect gets going it's a pretty sure thing that the call will be dropped, despite a full signal.
I finally noticed that this only happens when I'm at my computer desk, near my wireless router. If i'm anywhere else in the house, or for that matter, away from the house, I've never had a problem with a dropped call. The only other item that I suspect could have an interference effect is the Wacom tablet. I've noticed that certain wireless mice loose signal when they're too close to it. But I'd be surprised if that signal would be reaching out 2 to 3 feet.
    Any thoughts?

I think I'd try some settings in the router.  Experiment with channels on the 2.4Ghz band.  Try a low channel number.   If you have 5Ghz capablity try it.  Some routers also have a transmit power setting, if it's set higher than 100% then lower it.  If you don't need range, consider lowering below 100%.
    Just some ideas,
    Regards,

i get an events summary pop up every time i open my mac after its asleep. how do i turn it off?

I don't recognize this pop up.  What are the options in the gear dropdown- right side of your image.
You can open a temporary guest account to see if the problem persist in this environment.  If no than it is your user account.
Try a safeboot and test to load only system apps no 3rd party.

  • Repair headphone/mic plug & power/batt/hdd leds

I live in the Netherlands and handed in my laptop with Paradigit 2x for reparation, the second time because the service company of HP did not fix the problem. Now the problems are fixed, however the power/battery/harddisk leds are not working and additionally the headphone and microphone plugs are also not functional. Handing in the laptop and waiting a month for them to fix it is not an option anymore. Therefore I am considering to repair the issue myself.
I think the problem originates from the fact that several plugs are not plugged in inside of the laptop. The top cover was renewed in the second repair, so I suppose several wires were not connected. Does anyone have information about opening this model and suggestions how the problem may be solved. The model is: HP Presario CQ60-200ED.
    Thanx in advance

I've had a trouble lifting the metal structure over the main board, I guess it's attached at the other side (actually the top side) from under the keyboard's underside.
How to detach the keyboard on this model? Is it really the keyboard that must be removed or it's enough with some plastic strips around it?
Thanks in advance for any help!
PS. I already discovered that the ants did really a mess in there; until now I've cleaned almost all surfaces suspecting a lot of interference/overload was happening there.

  • Remote Office - Remote Control - Remote Access ??

What you describe doesn't really make me suspect hacking.  What model router?  Many routers need to have their config saved into NVRAM or else it is lost after a power cycle.  If it is some SMB, consumer grade router it may just be junk and do that.  One other option may be that someone on site decided to put a paperclip in the reset hole to see if they could fix the Internet..

I'm sure there is a solution, just haven't come across it yet...
We have remote offices, with remote access, etc.
With one critical exception......LOSS of Internet Connection.
No one at the remote offices even have a clue as to what a router is....
We are looking for a solution to place something (PC, Laptop, Raspberry Pi) that is on the LAN that is then accessible from the Wireless Communications Network 4G that would allow us access to the router, to reset the configuration or restore the configuration etc.
It goes without saying it needs to be secure, available 24x7.
Any ideas? This question was posed by our CEO, since it can take up to 3 hrs to be onsite with some of our locations.

  • Pavilion zv5000: Won't Power up with/without battery installed.

Prod. Name: hp Pavilion zv5000 (has a small sticker stating: zv5360us, though).
This notebook's owner is my sister. She said to me that she found some ants walking through/on it a few times and she took them out of the way by using a small piece of clean cloth. The last time that happenned it gave her trouble to turn it on. After that instance it never turned on again.
After some days she took it to CompUSA for a diagnostic but they told her it was damaged beyond repair; the Power Supply never got back from the place...
I took it home to check it further and am forced to use another hp notebook's Power Supply which doesn't give as much power out as the original one. After cleaning/inspecting the outside and some inner parts that can be seen when removing the batt., the RAM module & HDD I was satisfied as to the clean status and plugged the unit for charging the batt. for ~30 mins & pressed the power button. The blue leds that I guess are supposed to lit go on but for a couple of seconds only. It has been proved that it doesn't matter how long I leave the batt. to take a charge it won't help.
Since you already know what I've done & what the unit has gone through I would like to know if resitting the CPU might help? Should I try to disassemle the unit completely for cleaning & inspection?
I used to be a computer electronic technician at DEC, so I know much about what I pretend to do.
What are your thoughts and tips as to how to proceed from here?, thanks!
PS. I already resitted the RAM module after inspecting the contacts.

Knowing that when I turn On my Macpro, the Apple logo appeares late and always when Im connected to the WiFi It notifys me that there is someone using my IP address!!

You aren't being hacked. Your wireless network is probably misconfigured and/or hacked. Turn on WPA security and then reboot it.

  • My macbook won't start up, it gets stuck on the blue screen. can it be fixed? i suspect a hacking due to a strange phone call earlier which i thought was a scam.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • I was Hacked. I also found a suspect file. Can anyone decipher it?

I know I was hacked by my ex-partner (i was pretty much told so and that I was easy to track down (i.e. my computer) through it's IP address using an old email).
I also found a unknown file at the top level of my hard drive. I know everything that is at this directory level.
I opened the file using word and it contained the following:
    DMFRAM -Error( 0): Can't open file: dt05tmp.01 !
    (repeated 5 times)
    Can anyone decipher this?
I am now really paranoid. I thought I was safe with Apple's built-in Firewall set to maximum security so learning this has caused me a lot of concern.
I have since purchased and installed NetBarrier and disabled the root user. Any other tips to secure my computer would be greatly appreciated.
    15" Powerbook 1 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
I also would like to check my logs to see if I can spot any unusual activity but i can only see the last three days in the ipfw.log? Can anyone tell me where to find older and/or the logs i should be looking at?
    Thanks in advance

Having the firewall turned on is only useful against mitigating attacks that target services you don't want/expect to run. It does nothing against protecting against services that you enable. For example, if you're running a web server you presumably want to allow people to hit it, therefore the firewall needs to allow port 80 traffic in. It's not validating that traffic to see whether it's a real request, or whether the web server software you're running contains a vulnerability (like the all-too-common sql-injection common to many discussion boards).
Even more importantly the firewall doesn't do anything to protect against weak passwords. The chances are your friend knows your name (he is your friend after all), so he has half the keys he needs to get into your machine if you have SSH/Remote Login enabled. Now all he has to do is try different password combinations until one works... pet's name, child's name, zip code, etc. Once he finds a match there's no firewall in the world that's going to stop him poking around your machine, and this is the likeliest cause of any break-ins.
What can you do about it? not much other than to use really good passwords and to disable any accounts that you don't absolutely need.
As for the logs, they're rotated and compressed weekly where the last four weeks' logs are /var/log/ipfw.0.gz, /var/log/ipw.1.gz, etc.
You can use Console.app to view the logs, or decompress them manually at the command line. However, it's unlikely to yield any results if he came in through a door that was unlocked.
What might be more useful is the system.log or secure.log which will log failed login attempts. I'm betting somewhere there (maybe in one of the .gzipped versions) there's a number of password failures (unless your password is really easy to remember.
