Suspect stateful packet issue causing slowness?

I have a NW6.0SP3/BM37SP3-FP4E with the ipflt32(5.31.09) backrev to
BM37SP3 per Craig's site. We just applied the updates. Prior to the
upgrade, we increased the load on the server and have added more
stateful packet filters and then we started seeing slowness and dropped
connections after 2-3 days of use. Now the update is in and we are still
seeing slowness. Once we stop and restart the filters all is good for
a few days, then slows down again. This is a production server and is
causing us much pain. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Scott

  • New to MAC: Clip vs. Sequence format issues causing slow Quad w/FCP?

    Hi all,
I'm brand spanking new here and a recent Mac convert from Vegas. I figured that if I was going to upgrade, I would do it right. Don't get me wrong, I love Vegas, it's just that I'm tired of PC hardware conflicts and wanted to hop on the just-plug-it-in mac bandwagon and the ever increasing market share for FCP. Although the learning curve has been steep with FCP, I consider myself pretty savvy with Vegas and now a novice with FCP, I like the interface and there are certainly pros and cons. So far so good, but I have many questions.
This Quad has so much horse power and I'm having to render all the time. I am doing compositing and green screen stuff, but I'm thinking that with SD footage, the computer should be running sleek at satin.
I recently read another post in here that had a lot of off-topic discussion. I'm ignorant on the clip versus sequence settings and how they relate. In Vegas, most of these settings were automatic. In other words, whatever footage I threw at it, it dealt with. My footage was captured using default settings in Vegas and everything is in .avi format. When I was first bringing clips into FCP, the software suggested I use media manager to convert the files but I didn't want to suffer quality loss so I ignored it. Now that I have a rough cut of the entire 16 minute project, I'm starting to apply filters and effects and am noticing a bog down.
Now mind you, things are still faster than my old Pentium 1.4Ghz, but with 10Ghz under the hood (who would have imagined it possible?) I know it should run smoother.
Sorry I'm being so verbose, but my knowledge of formats is weak so I want to cover the bases. We shot on a DVX100A and mostly wide screen setting. In retrospect, this was a mistake as the DVX100A in wide screen simply puts black stripes on my clip versus being able to utilize the whole thing. Anyway, hind site is 20/20.
    Here is my clip information.
    .avi
    29.97 fps
    720 x 480
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Data rate: 3.6MB/sec
Pixel aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    Field: Lower(Even)
    Alpha: None
    Composite: Normal
    Audio is 48 and 16
It is possible that I captured the video in the wrong format. I have to use the "anamorphic" setting in FCP to make the footage look as though it's in the right aspect ratio. Correct me if I'm wrong, but anamorphic requires the use of a special lens when shooting yes?
I'm wondering if I should recapture the footage using FCP or will using Media Manager sort things out? If so what is the best way to do this as I don't want to lose anything that I've done. And is it even possible to recapture the clips without screwing up everything that I've already done, about sixty hours of work so far.
Worse comes to worse I'll just work with things moving slowly and stick it out until this project is done and then use FCP's cool logging/capture interface next time around. By the way, I captured this stuff long before I bought the MAC.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
    Tyler
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.5GB RAM

    Hi,
I spoke with the DP and it was definitely not shot anamorphic. Most of the footage was shot in 16:9 format which, on the DVX100 means that there is a black strip on the top and bottom of the clips as you probably know.
I recaptured a clip from scratch into a new project using the easy setup dealio in FCP. It is standard 3:2 and the clip looks fine. In my existing project is where I have a bit of a jumbled mess I'm afraid. I have a clip that looks fine in it's sequence, but when placed into the Main sequence, which has the same settings, it appears in a different aspect ration.
Yikes, I'm going to keep playing around. I'm starting to get a feel for what the format should be. I'll post again tomorrow when I have a better idea of how to answer your question.
Thanks for taking the time to pipe in here Denis.

    thealmost
Tell us more about your footage. In your original
post you say you shot in "letterbox" mode, i.e. fake
widescreen with the bars top and bottom. Yet you say
your sequence has to be put in anamorphic mode for
    this footage to look right.
If that's the case, something is wrong. Footage
that's letterboxed in the camera is 4:3, not
anamorphic, and if you checked the anamorphic box for
this kind of footage it would look squished.
I'm thinking that you could have genuine anamorphic
footage, that you are working with in 4:3, which
would be taxing your system somewhat. It's not clear
(to me anyway) from your original post.
Can you clear this part of your problem up?

  • Still Getting Buffering Issues and Slow Web Page L...

Since I suspect this issue hasn't gone away - and I/we have been asked to post issues individually rather than clumping into a single tread.
I just got back from Spain and after quizzing family it seems we are still getting Stream Buffering Issues (again)  (requires a refresh restart << I suspect lost packets rather than speed decrease) and webpages sometimes don't load correctly and require a refresh to load all page elements.
Just before I left there was an Openreach engineer working on the CAB and my noise margin doubled (but given my distance from the CAB and no speed issues I think the higher margin is a bonus not a negative << so hard to get uncontradictary posts or guidance on the web about Noise Margins - speeds still ok atm according to BTW but havent been back long enough to monitor thru the day/night.
I can only assume there are still backhaul issues ongoing.
I notice other ISP forums eg Plusnet noting capacity contention issues but BT remains Silent.
It's such a shame BT aren't more forthcoming to their customers and I feel really cheated/mis-sold by the whole Infinity 2 product 'never have to buffer again' - advertising hype. This has been a problem here since mid December - so we're talking a month worth of connection issues.
Since someone will probably ask me for HH stats - here you go - apologies to all those more than 20m from the CAB who are struggling on much slower speeds (I feel for you honest) and in terms of the available speeds etc feel this HAS TO BE a BTW backhaul issue - be it from exchange or in the core.
    I'm all open to comment/solutions

Short answer Ray - nope I only use WiFi on the phone.
Well for the benefit of others as much as myself I am still having issues and gave up on an iPlayer (live stream) due several bursts of buffering again tonight which made me miss the bits I was really interested in.
    So...
Eliminating anything in the home the following tests are done directly into the HH5s Gb port. I normally use a switch in this port to seperate my PC's from iThings and anything else on WiFi  (the kids)(BTFon/X) - never had any issues with my switch tho and it will push pull files to/from my NAS or transfer files around my three PCs at full speed << so no concerns there, but NOT used in these tests.
All wired with industry Grade CAT6 << even ran a checker tool on it and no probs << yip I have such things available.
Following Stats are after a complete shut down :
PC Restarted without Firewall or any AntiVirus - no other network connections active and HH5 WiFi Dissabled. HH5 Power Off and Factory Reset (I've tried previously as suggested by other posters using the Openreach modem but since it didnt solve anything just went back to the HH5 to save a power socket and my HH5 can stay up for 13 or so days without issues so I don't suffer in disconnection issues dept). Ok i could buy another router but I doubt its the problem and im just **bleep** away cash for what would then be a replacement for 'not fit for purpose' supplied equipment.
Quiet Line test = clear << tested master socket with wired phone.
    My Cabinet :
    BTWholesale Speed Test :
Interestingly i'm getting way lower UPLOAD than the minimum even on an impaired line (I'm only about 20m from the cabinet as the cable runs - less if I want to kick it) << this does seem to fluctate a lot.
    TBB Speedtest :
I'm open to suggestions but have just about had enuff...
I still maintain this is a congeston issue but that BT are in total denial to customers about what traffic shaping occurs to maintain the QoS for their YouView and BTSports Customers at the expense of other data under 'abnormal conditions' like lack of capacity.
So unless a MOD wants to jump in and resolve this quickly, I have several letters ready to go to various parts of BT - Customer Complaints/Sales(for misleading claims)/and Legal Dept. Just need the stamps + a cc copy to Ofcom. This is the last phase of having done ALL I CAN BE REASONABLY EXPECTED TO DO through the BTs compaints proceedures. so that I can send a breach of contract notification to escape this madness.
Yours xx, a very dissatisfied customer.

  • Bug report: Energy Manager causes slow performance...

    Very slow Windows Startup..
Energy Manager's plans and the problem occured using any plan as I remember, and it wasn't an issue with the maximum processor state. I had heavy disk usage, especially access to the Page File, which is what the person in the second link I posted also described. CPU usage was low. The disk usage was seemingly not related to Energy Manager (Chrome was usually the worst), but removing Energy Manager completely resolved the problem. If you would find it helpful. I'm quite confident that even with Maximum Processor state at %100, CPU usage was low when it was slow, and that disk access was the culprit.
previously have use 1.0.0.31 or 32 not sure.
    Windows 8.1
Im using Lenovo Energy Management Driver
    1.0.0.28
    4.6.2014

I actually have the same problem.  Sorry to work on a old thread, but...
I've got my Lenovo B50-70 less than 1 month ago, and had switched it to SSD and had set everything up and is working perfectly.  However there are a bunch of lenovo programs that came pre-installed.  This computer is used mainly for work and I really don't like programs that suddenly pop-up and ask you to do stuff, as it is quite distracting, and with Lenovo Energy Manager being one of them so I removed it.  (I did do some research before I remove...)
Everything was fine, until when I try to switch on my wifi (I usually have it off, as I use LAN most of the time)...  For the B50-70 there is a airplane button on F7, which allow the user to switch wifi and bluetooth on/off.  That button was unresponsive...  After some digging it is actually related to the power energy manager being removed.  So I've downloaded the latest version from Lenovo and it was working again...
However though, whenever I start my computer it is taking so long to start...  And I tried uninstalling the power energy manager and it solved the problem...  And I am stuck with either having no wifi on/off ability or a really slow boot, which loses the whole purpose of the SSD.  After you enter your username and password it originally takes around 5~10 seconds to login, now it takes over 1 minute.
I have found this other link, which says Lenovo Power Manager having the same problem.
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Bug-report-Power-Manager-causes-slow-performa...
There is a solution, which you can change the registry to switch a function off.  I've tried it and it didn't work, which is not surprising as it's a different program..  But I am hoping that Lenovo can provide a similar solution for Lenovo Energy Manager...

After days of tweaking and suspecting antivirus behind the problems, I reverted back to MSI's default drivers as listed on the product webpage. It appears to be stable so far. Well at least I can use it now.
I'm not sure if Killer's drivers are suck or MSI don't allow drivers 'not certified by them'. But its bad news if someone wants to use the latest drivers considering we're talking cutting edge gaming laptops here.

  • What Brand/Model Stateful Packet Inspection Wired Router Do You Recommend?

    Hi everybody,
After using a Macsense XRouter for many years, I'd like to upgrade to a more robust faster small office router. I'm not trying to find the cheapest router. A substantially faster unit with features like stateful packet inspection is what I'm after. A WIRED router. A more secure, heavy-duty device. I do not want to go wireless now. I have a separate DSL modem, so do not want an ADSL router. Just a router.
CISCO certainly is well known and apparently a good performer. Can anyone suggest CISCO models in the $200-$600 range that would work easily with a Mac? Being able to download firmware upgrades on a Mac easily is vital. I only need about 4 LAN Ethernet ports—SWITCHED.
CISCO must have competitors. Can anyone recommend equivalent Brands that are well regarded for Macs? Model numbers?
Thanks a lot for considering this!

    G5 iMac 20" 2.0Ghz (2nd generation)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   2GB RAM

Wow, that was fast. I can't find the button to click on for "helpful" for your post. Where did the button go? It did work on some earlier posts from you, but not all. Anyway, it begins to feel like we're almost out of the woods!
So a broadband router it is. I have zero motivation to try routing between IP subnets, happily.
Nice to have affirmation of the RV0041. It seemed to be the highest level before jumping all the way to Cisco. Yeah, the Telenet firewall configuration requirement on the Zywall 5 was something to choke on. Oh—I did find one review on it. The writer, an IT tech, emphasized in all capitals that a user has to have extensive knowledge of configuring these things BEFORE getting a Zywall. So the Zywall seems to also fit squarely into the IT pro department. On the RV0041, I thought the Gigabit switch feature was very fine.
Actually I have the software firewall "NetBarrier" installed already. Kind of sounds as if a lot of the functions of a network appliance are largely duplicated by NetBarrier. It's given me alerts in real time for attempted port scanning, for example. I do want fast page loading, so the performance lag using a network security device seems like a marked disadvantage.
Would a combination of NetBarrier and the RV0041 largely provide equivalent protection compared to a network security device? I'm willing to live with less protection to an extent to avoid slowing things down.
    Once again, many thanks indeed

  • ASA connection rate and stateful packet inspections rate limiting

Can anyone please send me a link or links on how configuring "connection rate" and "stateful packet inspections rate" on an ASA?
It seems not easy to find the links
    thanks,
    Han

    Hi Han,
I assume you're referring to the use of resource classes to limit the connection build and inspection rates? If so, this is only available in multiple context mode. You can find some config examples for that feature here:

  • Data Packet issue for DTP

    Hi,
I have Data packet  issue with DTP  when i am loding for General Ledger Account -2009
(cube) the data load is from DATA SOURCE (0FI_GL_4) . the data is first loaded to DSO
and then to a cube. upto this level the data is going fine, when the data is loaded to 2009
cube using DTP as full load  i have an issue in the report, where the net balance is not " 0 ".
but when i do a manual load for Selective company code's as a single value selection in the
DTP filter condetion for all the company codes my data is matching in the report, where
       the netbalance is " 0 ".
With this i think there is an issue with Datapacket for DTP.
       Please sugest in this regard.
       Regards,
       prasad.

    Hi Ngendra,
Yes, there will problem wth data loads some time with DTP.
This can be resolved by setting scemantic grouping at dtp level, make sure that scemantic field ur defining will be unique.
I am not sure with respect to functional side but with respect to ur post. i assume your problem will resoved by seeting company code as scemantic field or by setting some unique field as scemantic while data loading....
    Hope this helps you.
    Best Regards,
    Maruthi

  • &, &&, and @s causing ORACLE Database Project issues And SLOW Run

Hello I am encountering an issue while "Run"ing functions/sp/packages from an ORACLE DATABASE PROJECT.
We are supporting a legacy application that utilizes HTP.PRINT. We decided that it would be nice to have it as an Oracle Database Project but when we save the file it is croaking at us.
    We are using
    ODTwithODAC1110720
    Visual Studio 2008
    Oracle 10g r2
The specific issue happens when an @ is the first line in the file and when utilizing && in javascript (all being emitted from HTP.Print). Now I know we can work around these limitations (escaping the &s and wrapping the line) but is there any way to get these to work in the IDE w/o the escaping and such?
    For instance:
In visual Studio Create a Function1 as such
    DROP FUNCTION FUNCTION1;
    CREATE FUNCTION FUNCTION1 (
PARAM1 IN NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER IS
    BEGIN
    HTP.PRINT ('    if (popupStatus == 1 && okDisabled==false) {');
             htp.print('
    <style>
    @media printfooter; {
    }   etc etc etc   ');
      RETURN PARAM1;
    END FUNCTION1;
    /You will get this result:
    Connected.
    ------ Running '***\Project1\Functions\Script1.sql' @**.** ------
    Function dropped.
SP2-0310: unable to open file "media.sql"
    Enter value for okdisabled:
    Operation canceled by user
    -- this locks the file
If I go ahead and hit OK (in a new unlocked file)
SP2-0310: unable to open file "media.sql"
    Enter value for okdisabled: old   5: HTP.PRINT ('      if (popupStatus == 1 && okDisabled==false) {');
    new   5: HTP.PRINT ('      if (popupStatus == 1 ==false) {');
**/You will notice that when the function is created it just skips the & and @s
    FUNCTION FUNCTION1 (
PARAM1 IN NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER IS
    BEGIN
    HTP.PRINT ('    if (popupStatus == 1 ==false) {');
             htp.print('
    <style>
    }   etc etc etc   ');
      RETURN PARAM1;
END FUNCTION1;and just a little insult to injury on this, each "run" takes upwards to 20-25 seconds from Visual studio (this is a deal breaker for us to use the tool -- when SQL Developer takes mere moments) -- is there a configuration setting awry?
So I guess the questions are these (sorry for the ramble)
    1) How, in the VS 2008 IDE, can we accommdate & and && and @s without escaping/workarounds? (these work fine in developer)
    a) I have noticed that the escape character work around is ONE way ... thus if I have the package body in the Oracle Database Project, add "set escape \ " then escape all of my & and && and @s it works. but... the code is saved in Oracle without the escape characters (understandable) but if it changes in Oracle then I push the changes down I lose all of my escape characters.
    2) Why does each RUN take so long? working in developer & even the Server Explorer edited function are almost instantaneous.
-- I want to add, during my escape character tests EACH RUN took upwards to 30-45 seconds, so for 4 small simple test cases it was approaching 2 minutes of just save time...
so far these two shortcomings are barrier for our company to utilize these features (it's hard to try to sell the dept. on anything that doesn't handle escapes well AND -- the big AND -- takes entirely too long to save). any advise?
    thnx
Edited by: tanging on Jul 1, 2010 4:47 AM

we can just set the escape character and it works fine,
    set escape '~'
create or replace ....when/if we have to pull down from production level we'll have to be mindful to change & and @s to have a preceding escape character (and add the set escape to the top) --> which is a step back from SQL Developer which handles this flawlessly.
now the timing -- I believe it to be a timing issue on our network (therefore I've wasted your time). We have a default shared drive that is anything but speedy and our "default" homes in Visual Studio pointed to the shared drive. While the project/solution were on our local drives - the temp drive was the slow default. Changing that locally seems to have made the timing issue go away. (although on the first save of the body spec after the change and reboot it took 35 seconds but on subsequent runs it Ran in acceptable time limits).

  • Email Send/Receive causes slow access to website host server. Any Suggestions?

    Hello Community.
"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth."
I have a bit of a weird problem and though it sounds silly, I'm 99% certain of the cause. My business migrated our five different sites to a new web host (shared hosting) about 5 months ago. Since then we've been plagued by a localised speed issue with connecting to that host. The host is a reasonably good one, but for some reason when connecting on our local network ONLY we were having intermittent load problems; anywhere for instant load to 40-50 seconds. After much testing we have arrived at an improbable conclusion; That accessing webmail (e.g. clicking Send/Receive) on any Mac within our network causes a massive and immediate slow-down of website access and smtp connection to any of our five sites held on the shared hosting server.
Again, I know how strange that sounds, but we've essentially proved it based on ping tests and side by side comparisons of isolated computers. The ONLY computers that are affected are the Macs on the network and also mobile browsers on multiple platforms. Windows based PCs are not affected by the slow down.
Also, the problem seems to be access based. By that I mean, one a site is accessed it loads almost instantly, but it can take up to 40 seconds of white screen before the site is reached. Interestingly, during this time, the sites' ping speeds are perfectly normal UNTIL the moment when the page is finally accessed and it loads instantly. Once the load triggers the ping speeds increase dramatically to the point where they occasionally time out. Once the site is loaded the ping speeds return to normal (approx 22 ms).
    ... help!
    Important: Things we've ruled out:
ISP is not a factor (used a 3G modem to rule this out)
Router is not a factor (see above)
Switch is not a factor (Tested different switch)
Individual terminals are not a factor (when removed from the network or isolated on the network the individual terminals perform perfectly. Furthermore when an external mac (iMac laptop) was introduced to the network it performed just as poorly)
Browser/Operating System/CMS platform not a factor (multiple CMSs have been tested, testing on multiple computers with different versions of OS have been tested, and all sites have different CMSs; Joomla, Concrete 5, Bespoke, and Wordpress of different versions)
Cpanel setup not a factor (Each site has its own Cpanel account, the are not set up as add-on domains. Furthermore, a similar slow down has been observed on other sites held on that server)
Mixed platform network not a factor (We removed non-mac based computers from the network and turned off wi-fi to isolate and found no change)
DNS does not appear to be a factor (We tested multiple DNS including Googles 8,8,8,8 / 8,8,4,4 and found no change)
Cabling does not appear to be a factor (though the cabling isn't perfect, it's at least Cat5/Cat6, plus it wouldn't affect only our sites)
Email Client does not appear to be a factor (accessing email via Outlook or Mail App causes the slowdown)
    Important: Things that we suspect
Computer Year of Manufacture: (though all computers are affected, the problem is most severe on pre-2013 constructed models (regardless of OS)
POP3/SMTP request immediately triggers the slow down (observed visually as well as in ping tests. No mail needs to be sent/received during this process to trigger the slow down, simply the request causes the spike. We haven't yet been able to test IMAP)
The Networked Macs (not the individual macs): (the individual computers when isolated on the existing hardware perform fine. Only when they are networked does the slow down occur)
DNS (Even though we've found no link to DNS, if feeeeels like a DNS issue.)
CHANGE of host. (We changed hosts due to extremely poor service and tech support. The new guys are fantastic. Though I don't think it's the new host's fault, it's possible that the change of hosts has caused our network to search for our websites in the wrong place)
Apple Knows Best: Is there something that Macs do with Mail to update a routing table? Like, could a mail application trigger an update to a local routing table?
Has anybody heard of anything like this before? Or can anybody suggest any possible things to test or change? Even though email requests seem improbable, I can confirm that it has been proved visually and through tests. As you can probably tell, our testing has been extensive so if you notice anything in our test  conclusions that I could add to please... I'm seriously open to suggestions now.
Any help with this would be much appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    -TheWebFella

    Hi Linc
Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah I'd already tried that. It's been deactivated on most of our computers already. Plus like I said, it's different browsers on multiple macs and also some mobile browsers on both iPhone and Samsung on our wireless network. I can confirm that on mac the problem is consistent across Chrome, Firefox as well as Safari.
    Thanks anyway! Any other takers?

  • ATI driver issues and slow video playback

I just reinstalled Arch and I installed the ATI drivers, at first I couldn't get them working but when I did, video in full screen was amazingly slow, so I tried installing ati-drivers-arch, as someone in the boards suggested but after that each time I start X, it would crash my computer, so right now I am using the standard vesa driver to even start X.
Also when trying to resize mplayer (while using -vo gl) it says my computer is too slow. And VLC has no speed issues but the quality of the picture is very poor.
    I am running:
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    ATI Radeon X800 GTO
    1.5 gb of DDR RAM

It doesn't look like xorg 7 has been installed.  The latest kernel 2.6.15 needs xorg 7, udev, and initrd .
I may be wrong but my xorg is much smaller in size and fonts are handled differently in the latest kernels.
Please see the blogs concerning the upgrades to the xorg 7 changes.

  • Low system memory issue - caused by Mail?

While I was at work, my wife was using our iMac at home, and she said that a weird error dialog appeared this afternoon that asked her to quit applications, following which the system became unresponsive.
When I came home I found that a lot of running applications were in a hung state (unresponsive and required a Force Quit) so I rebooted the iMac.
I looked in the Console and saw that at 15:39:37 today two errors started repeating at an enormous rate - something like 5000 times per second for the next 5 seconds:
      12/02/2015 15:39:36.373 Mail[226]: *** Assertion failure in -[MCSocket readBytes:maxLength:error:], /SourceCache/Mail/Mail-2070.6/MailCore/Networking/MCSocket.m:469
12/02/2015 15:39:36.381 Mail[226]: exception parsing IMAP response: trying to read/write concurrently
...then at 15:39:42 the rate suddenly decreases to only about 10 errors per second. This continued for a further 15 minutes, until at 15:55:22:
      12/02/2015 15:55:22.000 kernel[0]: low swap: suspending pid 226 (Mail)
      12/02/2015 15:55:22.590 loginwindow[797]: -[ProcessPanel(lowMem) initAsLoMemPanel] | Lo-Memory panel initializing
...then lots of errors like this:
      12/02/2015 15:55:23.000 kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid 999 [com.apple.MailSe]
      12/02/2015 15:55:24.000 kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid 1000 [com.apple.InputM]
      12/02/2015 15:55:25.000 kernel[0]: memorystatus_thread: idle exiting pid 269 [com.apple.intern]
So it looks to me like the Mail app went haywire, the Mac ran low on memory, so OS X made some kind of "Lo-Memory panel" appear to handle it.
A quick search in Google Images revealed that there is such a thing as an OS X low memory error - the exact text of which is "Your system has run out of application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using". It displays a list of running apps so you can quit them. The error looks something like this:
        http://i.imgur.com/HDplIwv.jpg
When I showed this picture to my wife she said that is exactly what she saw.
I will report this to Apple on their feedback page. If anyone has any other suggestions let me know. Obviously something that can bring down the entire system like this is not good.

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • What specifically causes slow directory listings in OS X? Finder, Save As boxes, etc

I have a very specific problem with my laptop in terms of speed. A lot of things happen very quickly on it, especially since I started using tools like Onyx etc to maintain it. But my Finder is notably slower than the machine in general.
To give you some examples, sometimes when I'm in column view and I click on a folder, it can take several seconds before the list of files appears in the next column. When I go to File > Open inside an application, it seems to take forever for the box to be propagated with the list of files in the directory. Changing directories inside a box like this yields the same result, the whole list goes white for several seconds before the new directory appears.
Spotlight has similar issues - it always finds what I want, but it seems to take a very long time. Sometimes it's several seconds before any results appear at all, and other times some results appear straight away (usually applications) but I have to wait considerably longer before documents also appear in the list. Launching applications from Dock can take a while, with apps sometimes bouncing up to 10 times before opening. Interestingly, if I quit an app and relaunch it later, it takes far fewer bounces for it to open, it's only slow the first time I launch after a reboot.
You get the general idea. File and directory listings are very slow, and far slower than almost any other task I want this computer to do.
I've defragmented both used and free space, rebuilt the directory several times, verified with no errors, repaired permissions with no errors, and I'm stumped as to what could be causing this kind of problem. Activity monitor doesn't report that I have any page outs and CPU isn't running high at all so it's not that. I do regular smart checks and surface scans to make sure there's no corruption or anything like that and they consistently tell me everything is fine.
    I'm pretty stumped.
MAcbook is a black late 2006 macbook 2,1 with 2GB RAM (max), running 10.6. Also, when I installed 10.6 a couple of years ago it was far faster than it is now, before anyone tells me I simply don't have enough RAM. The computer behaves this way even when it's fresh from a rebook with 75% of RAM free, so that's not the issue.
    Any ideas?
EDIT: My SL partition is 100 gigs, 60 used, 40 free. 39.5 contiguous free space in one block, hardly a desperate free space situation...

I used techtool pro, and I did so specifically in the hopes of solving this problem. It does seem to have sped up the computer somewhat, but more in the sense of how quickly it opens and saves files, which when you consider the result of defragmenting seems to make sense. Hasn't helped with this Finder problem in any way whatsoever though, or with the opening of apps from the dock.
EDIT: I don't want to get into a debate about this here as this isn't the subject of this thread, but built in defragmentation only handles files up to a certain size, and when you're a producer like myself working with DV and WAV files which can get into the hundreds of megabytes, that doesn't cut it. The TTP defragmentor specifically lists these files again and again as the ones which fragment, so it's obviously not a totally flawless built in system.
Anyway the slow directory listing issue was present long before I touched the drive with any such tools and the tools made absolutely no difference to that problem, for better or worse.

  • Is the latest version of iTunes 11 causing slower downloads?

I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes 11. I am running it on Windows XP. Recently, I upgraded my internet to 20 mbps. However, I am finding that downloading my movie and music purchases extremely slow. To download a 1 GB movie takes more than an hour. This is way too long. Anyone else have this problem?

I don't think it's a coincidence that after I downloaded iTunes 11 I started getting SUPER SLOW movie rental downloads.  I'm on a Mac Mini (mid-2010) running the latest OS X which I use as my Home Theater PC.  Our routine is pizza, wine and movie night on Friday.  My point being that we rent a movie about once a week from iTunes. Before iTunes 11 the movie was ready to watch in just a minute or two and we could play without interruption.
Now it's taking well over 24 hours.  + I'm getting the notice that says the movie is ready to watch but it really isn't.  So it isn't just a download speed issue I suspect - but a bug introduced in iTunes 11.
This happened last week with Resident Evil: Retribution and now last night with TED.  Both in HD.  I still haven't been able to watch more than the first few minutes of TED now 12 hours later.  And I have no idea how the 24 hour rental period will factor into this.  Will my rental period expire before the freaking movie is finished downloading?
Also, I've downloaded a couple of albums in the past week and they've zipped along as usual.
