Suspend to ram with PM-Utils

Well, i think there's a lot of stuff about it, so i'll keep it kinda short.
My pm-suspend log seems to say everything is more or less successful on the suspension process, which is good!

And the power led flashes as it does (hp dv6-2xxx) to tell me that it's sleeping nice and cozy on ram. But, i press the power button. Big mistake.
The CD in the drive (i keep one in for when i test something like this...helps a little bit) spins up, and gets read, so I'm guessing the system gets called back up, but my screen ends up blank, with no power going through it. Then i have to force it off, remove the battery, put the battery back in, and wait for a long boot into arch again, with no saved data.

Could be an issue with the graphics card. From the log it seems as if you are using the opensource ati driver. Personally, I never had luck to get resume to work with this driver, but my card was too old for the closed source driver. The symptoms were the same as yours, the machine would suspend or hibernate, but failed to wake up.

  • Suspend to RAM with KMS enabled and ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M

    Per this thread, I added the file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d to disable glx in order to continue booting with 'nomodeset' to disable KMS after today's updates.  I've always had to boot with 'nomodeset' so that suspend/resume will work properly (I get a black screen/freeze on resume from suspend to ram). However, with this fix, my screen redraws are happening MUCH slower than before the update. Anyone have KMS enabled AND suspend/resume working with an:  ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 (PCIE)?

    Ok, sorry for a delay -- long weekend...
    Suspend + KMS have been working starting sometimes in the 2.6.35 series.
    My guess as to why you can't suspend, is your BIOS/motherboard, nothing else.

  • Resume from suspend to ram fails (pm-utils)

    Hi,
    When I suspend to ram the computer seems to suspend normally, but the resume fails and it triggers a normal boot instead.
    I'm on a Lenovo Thinkpad X60 laptop with the 2.6.30 kernel and gnome-power-manager (pm-utils).

    Unfortunately, every laptop seems to have its own idiosyncrasies with this (not to mention differences in different users' setups---e.g., what devices are attached, what modules are loaded). So it takes some serious trial and error to figure out how to get this to work. All I can suggest is that you become intimately familiar with the wiki page, and with the HAL quirks site, and that you try to eliminate all the daemons and so on you can while still generating the problem (e.g., boot into a virtual console instead of gnome, if you're comfortable with that). Then start a process of trying different quirks as explained on those webpages. Take good notes so you don't lose track of which combinations of quirks show result in what behavior.
    The HAL quirks site will also point you to what other users using your laptop, or similar laptops, found to work. But trial and error may still be necessary.

  • High temperature after suspend to RAM with linux-3.9.2-1.

    After the update to linux-3.9.2-1 my laptop works on higher temperature after resuming from suspend to RAM. Works fine with linux 3.8.7-1.
    Normal working temperature is 47~49 degrees Celsius and after resuming it is 59~61. It's not just a false temperature reading. I can actually feel the laptop warmer, and the CPU fun spins up.
    I can't see any CPU high load. I tend to believe that the temperature rise has to do with the Intel GPU driver (i915). My CPU has an integrated GPU.

    Ways to debug it? Apart from kernel GIT bisect.

    I got the impression myself, that all the i915 downclock tweaks have been getting counterproductive over time as the driver got better.
    Be sure to give the new pstate another go. I had problems too with the upgrade to 3.9.x and the powersave governor. Enabling "performance" in cpupower only and letting intel_pstate manage the idling on its own had an awesome effect. I only have rc6=1 and "sna" accel along with it on a similar cpu. Resuming with fan off.

  • Suspend to file with pm-utils

    I have a MacBook Pro3 and since I have a triple boot there I am unable to spare a partition for swap space, so I use swap in tmpfs (problem is the same with swap file). However, i want to be able to suspend to disk: is there a way to suspend to a file instead of to a swap partition with pm-utils?

    In fact, when i was researching of this problem i wanted to check if my graphic card and memory are failing so a did few changes (removed memory stick and so one) but in doing this i removed almost all of my hard disk drives because i didn't want to hurt them with many reboots or resets.
    What did i find? It is strange, kernel version is not important because i checked most of them.
    I removed 2x2TB Seagate F14 series along with 4x3TB WD Green. Then i checked s2ram, it went to suspend, and resumes correctly. Everything works. I put it to sleep with s2ram -f -a 1. Works
    I attached my 4x3TB WD Green drives. I put computer to sleep with s2ram...it causes hard lock, black screen, i could do only poweroff by powerbutton. s2ram -f -a 1 causes freez. Sometimes, but not constantly, s2ram -f -a 3 -p is being able to suspend...(mostly it does a freez, hard lock computer) but sometimes it is able to put it to a sleep, but resume just freezes everyting - no blinking cursor, no blinking num lock led and so on.
    I know that you would suggest me to check logs - this is the main problem. Logs for pm-suspend works when i suspend or resume without WD drives attached. When i have them connected, i'm not able to check pm-logs because computer hangs, freezes and logs are not being stored/writed to pm-suspend.log and pm-powersave.log.
    Could somebody help? Point me to a solution? I can't check logs because there are not any when freezing occurs. I checked openSuse thread and many others and for other systems there were some kernel fixex, patches.
    They wrote that WD blacks are at fault because they don't have APM. Well, in fact my WD Green have APM with very aggresive factory settings: they park heads over 8 seconds not being used. I disabled it in firmware but disabling it is not the point and not the problem. People have the same problem even with APM and parking heads on other WD drives, i found it that some have it with WD Red's drives and even with very old 320GB WD Blue series - what is more funny, i have 640GB AAKS blue from WD and with this drive i can suspend or resume - APM on this drive is also unavilable, like in Green series because i changed it with wdidle with prebootable cd. I can't  supend or resume with 3TB WD Greens.
    BTW - suspend to disk, with pm-utils and uswsusp works ok, in 100% every time. (i had to add "shutdown method = shutdown" to /etc/suspend.conf from uswsusp package).
    On Windows machine it works. Can suspend, can resume, can hibernate.

    Hm, sometimes i found myself astonished because some things just does not work at all on one machine, while the other one has no problem at all. I was trying to find why suspend to ram won't work at all...and while i was searching i found one topic that was leading to upower dbus. Similar problem with upower i found, by coincidence, on Manjaro forum.
    dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower" /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend
    this command above returns all the time:
    Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "Suspend" with signature "" on interface "org.freedesktop.UPower" doesn't exist
    I tried this:
    sudo systemctl enable acpid.service
    sudo systemctl --system daemon-reload
    sudo systemctl restart systemd-logind
    As soon as i enabled and started acpid.service...my supend to ram, from kde, works like a charm, without graphic problem, or freezing.
    There is few question: why on my desktop suspend doesen't work out of the box, when even archwiki says it should? Why on my netbook machine (Acer AOD270) that has the same package installed it works out of the box? Why on my desktop machine acpid.service was not enabled, was not started and was not running while on the notebook it does?
    Anyway...i fixed it by a big coincidence because on Fedora forum somebody has problem with suspend to ram with nvidia GTX750 and this card was new like my card (GTX660). He posted the same problem with upower that i posted in quotes and because of this i found another thing on Manjaro forum and that was it!
    BTW - this problem, i now think, is not related to my WD drives because it works with them. I think that there was another one ugly thing that broke my suspend to ram ability - bios of my motherboard (so called uefi bios with support for old one) has no option for S1-S5 stated (like the previous motherboards had) and only have ASPM...and ASPM is in my opinion broken but i will try to veryfi it one again later.

  • Suspend to Ram doesn't work

    Hello,
    I tried to get Suspend to Ram, but whatever way I use. Nothing worked.
    First try was with
    echo -n "mem" > /sys/power/state
    I then got only a blinking cursor on a black screen for 20 seconds and then I see my console back with the error message
    write error: Resource temporarily unavailable
    Next thing the hibernate-scripts.
    I changed hibernate.conf to
    #TryMethod suspend2.conf
    #TryMethod disk.conf
    TryMethod ram.conf
    After a run I have the same behaviour like in the first method.

    Ok for the last attempt I installed powersave, run the powersaved daemon and typed "powersave -u" into my console.
    My machine switched to text and I could read

  • Suspend to ram stopped working with Acer Aspire 5930G - Arch64

    Suspend to ram recently stopped working on my laptop running Arch64. When ever I press the suspend to ram button in kde4 simply nothing happens, no screen flashing or error messages of any kind. I tried to install the pm-utils package and run pm-suspend, but with the same result. The program just ran and nothing happened and no feedback, not even in dmesg.

  • [Solved] Suspend to RAM problems with HP dv7 laptop

    Hello,
    I have an HP dv7-6000 notebook that I can't get suspend to RAM working on. When I tell Linux to suspend, the screen turns off, I hear the hard disk turn off, but all the lights stay on (power, wireless, and touchpad). After a couple minutes the BIOS kicks in and runs the fans at maximum speed. The only way to get out of this situation is to hold down the power button for a hard shutdown.
    It's almost as if the suspend was successful, but "incomplete," because the system for whatever reason is stuck powered on.
    I have updated the BIOS and there is no difference. I have also tried different acpi_os_name values based on my DSDT table ("Windows 2001," "Windows 2009," etc.).
    Both pm-utils log files (pm-powersave.log and pm-suspend.log) are blank. I have also tried uswsusp, and the same thing happens. I have not tried hibernate yet because I don't have a swap partition.

    +1, I'm having the same issue with both "pm-suspend" and "sytemctl suspend", not always but happening 1 out of 5 times maybe, this started happening since the 3.10* upgrade, currently running 3.10.5-1 on my modest compaq.

  • Suspend to ram works with powersave daemon but resumes on lid open

    Is there any way to modify this behavior? I have a T60 and utilizing the powersave daemon my suspend to ram works fine, but I can't find a way to stop it from resuming when I open the lid of my laptop. I am using the stock 2.6.19 kernel.

    yea just strange because in XP this behavior doesn't occur, so I figured it wasn't bios related (newb assumption?) i'll look into the above assumptions.
    it doesn't bother me all that much, it probably truly only interferes once in a while, but i guess it is a control issue. after all, if you dont have control under linux, then where else would you? haha. especially if winxp is getting the job done. heh

  • Suspend to ram resume issue with Asrock Q1900-ITX

    Hi,
    I encountered a strange issue with suspend to ram while setting up a new small home server with an Asrock Q1900-ITX board. If I suspend the system and wake it within a few seconds everything works fine. However, if I wait a couple of minutes or even more, instead of resuming the system it takes a few seconds to think and then it reboots instead. It doesn't matter whether I resume via the power switch or with wake on lan. I tried several bios settings, the stock kernel as well as LTS and I even used an Ubuntu Live CD to check whether this is an arch issue. However, with the latter the system does not reboot it simply gets stuck. Power is on but nothing happens.
    What is strange though that it works on all these platforms if there are only a few seconds between suspend and resume. Any ideas?

    I just bought an Asrock Q1900-ITX last month. It seems to have issues when rebooting that may be part of your problem.
    Overall the motherboard specs seem pretty good. It has 2x sata3, 2x rear usb3 ports, and an on board usb3 connector. The processor is an integrated quad core Celeron CPU  J1900  @ 1.99GHz. I have added a 4G stick of memory, a 10/100 usb2 Ethernet adapter, and a 64 G usb3 thumb drive. It runs a headless setup of Arch's Simple stateful firewall; replacing my ancient WRT54GL Linksys router/firewall. I power it using an old 20 pin picoPSU plugged into the 24 pin power connector. It only draws 10 watts of power at the wall outlet.
    There are a number of posts I found on the booting issue, including patches in the kernel mailing list, so hopefully better support will come soon. For me booting is at least consistent. I use the efi boot with csm bios option enabled. If I do a systemctl reboot the computer hangs after the grub loading kernel, initrd messages. Press the reset button and booting is successful. If I do a
    systemctl poweroff followed by a wake-on-lan the computer will boot normally.
    I thought at first the booting issue was because I had /boot/efi/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi and /boot/efi/EFI/arch_grub/archx64.efi files and the bios couldn't deal with that configuration; the bios would loose the 1st boot drive setting. I just went with only the /boot/efi/EFI/boot/bootx64.efi but still have the booting problem.
    To get the wol function working I think I had to change the legacy options in the bios. Sorry, I can't remember exactly what they were. After getting the wol working I tested the suspend to ram which worked fine. I am not sure is these legacy options would fix your suspend problems but maybe.  Could you check what journalctl -b -1 shows after you try to suspend to ram. Also do you run the nfs client? I had a problem with suspend on another computer that editing the nfsmount.conf file fixed.

  • Help with bash script that fails after suspend to RAM

    I have a very simple reminder script that uses an endless loop, sleep and zenity to pop up a reminder every twenty minutes:

    - because the local repo is a shared wordpress mess and people forget to make commits so I'd like a local backup that includes all changes that may not be in github (sadly).

  • LG R510 - Suspend-to-RAM problem

    Hi, I'm having trouble using the suspend-to-ram feature on my LG R510 laptop. I tried suspending the machine using the suspend feature integrated in KDE-4.2 as well as using the command-line tools s2ram and pm-suspend. The machine behaves exactly the same in all cases:
    The system (apparently) suspends without errors. It also correctly restores to it's former state upon wakeup. Even the X-Server starts and seems to work fine.
    However, the hard-drive can no longer be accessed after wakeup, leaving you with a "dead" system.
    If you try running a command from a shell it will trigger either "command not found" or "input/output error" messages. For that reason I'm unable to gather any diagnostic information from the continued system. Since the hard-drive cannot be accessed, no logs get written after wakeup either.
    The hard-drive does spin up when the system wakes up (I can clearly hear it). There is probably some problem with the hard-drive controller. However, I wasn't able to find any specific information about Intel ICH9 chipsets and suspend-to-RAM yet.
    I will post some details about the system. Please feel free to ask for additional information.

    It seems this is a BIOS bug of the LG R510. There is a workaround: You have to set your hard drive to IDE mode.
    To do this, open the BIOS setup utility by pressing F2 during startup. Look for the "HDC configure as" option and switch it from AHCI to IDE.
    Note that this might reduce disk performance. So far, I haven't noticed any difference after switching to IDE. Suspend-to-RAM works like a charm now.
    By the way, a similar problem occurs on HP notebooks where it can be fixed through a BIOS update. Unfortunately there is no update available for the LG R510 yet.

  • [Solved] Suspend to ram doesn't work correctly on Acer Aspire 5100

    Hi people of the archlinux forum.
    Finally I decided to change from ubuntu to archlinux because I wanted to learn more about the world of linux.:D
    I have already almost completely set up my laptop, but I have a problem when suspending to ram. The problem comes out when i wake up the laptop, and the screen starts to flicker and will not go away until i restart the laptop.

    I have the same problem with my Acer Aspire 5100 (video ATI Xpress1100).
    xorg.conf is not used. Turning KMS off doesn`t help.
    I have tried to use uswsusp, but it doesn`t help. s2ram -n output correctly identify my laptop, which means it is in "whitelist" and correct settings for this hardware is known. s2ram suspend works, but screen blinking after waking up remains the same.

  • [SOLVED] Suspend to ram / disk not working in newer kernels

    Hi all,
    this puzzles me for a while:
    My desktop system was able to suspend to ram / disk flawlessly in older kernels. It stopped working with 3.3. The suspend seems to work, the machine goes to standby. But when I try to resume, the machines is on but the screen stays black. Neither the console is working nor can I ssh into it. Only hard reset gets me out here
    I did investigate and found many tips and hints which all led to nowhere. I even changed my filesystem back from btrfs to ext4 and my VGA module from proprietary nvidia to nouveau.
    When this all failed I got to the idea to burn several install disks. One of the official 2011.08.19 (kernel 3.0.3) and one of the snapshots 2012.06.05_04-00-01 (kernel 3.3.7) and 2012.07.17_04-00-01 (kernel 3.4.4). I guess these can not be compromised by some hosed installation. I started one by one and issued the follwing command:
    echo mem > /sys/power/state
    which suspends the machine successfully in all three cases. With 2011.08.19 the resume is working but the other two fail. Some more info about the hardware:

    Another life-sign. The issue is still unsolved but I've come a little further. It seems to be a combination of more failures. The first one is USB hardware. I have a usb keyboard-mouse combo from Logitech (comfort cordless desktop). The USB bus does not wake up correctly when resuming from suspend. So my keyboard is unsuable. I put in a file /etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hcd with the following content:

    The bus IDs were taken from /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd
    When I start pm-suspend from a console (no X started) this seems to reanimate my keyboard while the screen stays black (with backlight on). I can type and reboot. Also I can ssh into the machine from my laptop.
    Concerning the blank screen there seems to be a bug in both the proprietary nvidia modules as well as the nouveau driver. The nvidia folks have issued a new beta driver which seems to at least minimize the failures. This all concerns the nv50-family of nvidias cards. I have a GF8600GT which is one of these
    I'll wait for this driver and then restart my testing. Until then - no suspend/hibernate
    EDIT: Today's nvidia 304.32 is solving my issues - I can sleep again
