Suspend to RAM works but awakes immediately (pm-suspend)

Hello,
After after years of being unable to make suspend to RAM works on my lenovo Y530, I have finally found people who can do it. The trick is simply to add a new rule in /etc/pm/sleep.d/. I will edit the arch wiki page concerning the Y530 if I get it to work, but right now my problem is that the laptop immediately awakes after what seems to be a fully working suspend to RAM. Here is the log of pm-suspend :
Initial commandline parameters:

As you can see, everything works fine, except the fact that the computer awakes 7 seconds after going to sleep... Of course I'm not touching it when it goes to sleep. I've also tried to disconnect everything I could (USB device and wifi).
Is there anyone who have already seen this kind of thing?

Just out of curiosity, are you wired in to a network? I've heard that data transfer over ethernet will trigger the wake-on-lan settings in the BIOS, which would wake it from sleep.

Actual behaviour: reinserting battery is only way to wake it up.
Not even holding down power button yields a response. Here is log from boot:

  • Suspend to ram works with powersave daemon but resumes on lid open

Is there any way to modify this behavior? I have a T60 and utilizing the powersave daemon my suspend to ram works fine, but I can't find a way to stop it from resuming when I open the lid of my laptop. I am using the stock 2.6.19 kernel.

yea just strange because in XP this behavior doesn't occur, so I figured it wasn't bios related (newb assumption?) i'll look into the above assumptions.
it doesn't bother me all that much, it probably truly only interferes once in a while, but i guess it is a control issue. after all, if you dont have control under linux, then where else would you? haha. especially if winxp is getting the job done. heh
    Thanks everyone for hte suggestions.

  • Suspend to RAM works only 1-3 times

    Hi!
    PC configuration:
    MSI E350IA-E45 (AMD Fusion E-350 Zacate), 2Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD, Arch x86_64.
    # uname -a
    Linux xbmc-pc 3.0.0-rc6-mainline #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 8 07:58:00 NOVST 2011 x86_64 AMD E-350 Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
I am trying to get suspend to ram working. When suspending the machine second or third time it hangs with black screen an green power led. I need to unplug the power cord and back it again to bring the machine back up.
I tried 2.6.38, 2.6.39 and now 3.0-rc6 kernel, but without success. The unbinding usb-ports and unloading sound, video, network modules does not help.
Also I have debugged DSDT table and replace it with grub2 at boot.
The bios for mb is the latest version.
    lspci -Q -vv
    dmesg
    kernel.log
    pm-suspend.log
The logs are for one one successful suspend and one unsuccessful.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Suspend appears to work, but monitor won't go back on

When I suspend my machine using gnome-power-manager, the computer seems to go into suspend mode exactly as it should, and pressing the power button brings it back on as expected. However, the monitor stays in power-save mode as long as the computer remains on after it has been brought out of suspend. As far as I can tell, the only way to get the monitor working again is to restart, which defeats the purpose of using suspend.

    bneate wrote:
I had the same thing with my laptop with a intel graphics card.  To solve it I had to add acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode to the kernel line in my menu.1st for grub.
    i.e. changed:
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda1 ro
    to
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda1 acpi_sleep=s3_bios,s3_mode ro
Not sure if it's the same problem for you but it's worth a try.
Okay, my monitor works fine now.
Unfortunately, I've discovered that eth0 bombs out when I go into suspend mode, and nothing short of rebooting seems capable of bringing it back up. Here's the log:

  • Dual 2.3 G5 (not Dualcore). Bought ram, works, but is it safe?

Got a deal on this mac, it came with two 256m chips, I put two 512m in there, then bought 2 more 256 to make it an even 2gig of ram.
My question is, in System Profiler, the original ram, and the 512 sticks say speed: PC3200U-30330, but the two "new" 256ers I put in say PC3200U-25330
All memory says DDR SDRAM, and OK status.
The 256ers came from a dual G5 as well, non dual-core, so I assumed it's the same.
Is this 25330 versus 30330 thing something I need to be worried about?

It didn't for me. I just waited for the page to load, and scrolled to the bottom! I'm not subscribed to that service. However, it shouldn't damage the computer, it just might not function as well as if all the RAM had the same coding (probably only a small difference in performance if that): if they're different, what tends to happen is that all the RAM runs as slow as the slowest module.

When I Suspend-to-RAM (via KDE) the system apparently suspends correctly but then it instantly turns back on. So the problem is not that I cannot suspend but rather that the system turns back on immediately after suspending. Usually the system could only be turned back on by pressing a button on the keyboard or the power button (not by moving the mouse or opening the laptop lid).
I unplugged all attached devices, including mouse, keyboard, power supply and network but that doesn't help.
I'm pretty clueless what could cause this and would be happy if someone could point me in some direction. This used to work until recently but I don't know what update broke it.

    Update:
The system stays asleep when I unload the ehci_hcd and ohci_hcd before suspending (unloading just ehci_hcd as suggested on other sites doesn't work).
So some kind of usb device seems to trigger the wakeup. As I said before I don't have any usb devices plugged in, though.
Since unloading the usb drivers is not very convenient I would really like to find out what exactly causes the wakeup. I don't really have a clue where to start, though.
I use a script to unload ehci_hcd automatically when I suspend (my issue is slightly different, it doesn't immediately come back, it just doesn't finish suspending and gets stuck on a black screen)
I'd imagine a script someone similar to this would work:

  • Suspend to ram doesen't work

Hi. I would like to ask for your advice. I have problem with suspend to ram. In order to have nvidia drivers i had to install newest kernel, 3.12.xx. I found that suspend to ram doesen't work. I put my computer in sleep mode by typing
    sudo systemctl suspend
, everything works, computer goes in sleep mode but after resume from it, after wake up i have only black screen with unblinking cursor on the left upper corner of screen. I can't kill x, can't do anything in tty, only hard reset.
I removed nvidia drivers in order to check older kernel, and found that with nouveau drivers kernel 3.9 works, i can suspend and resume. I did another thing. I installed clean Arch, updated it with pacman -Syu, and installed nvidia drivers - the same problem with resuming from suspend. So on fresh and updated system i removed nvidia again, installed old kernel with nouveau - suspend works with resume.
Could somebody help me? Maybe you can point me to a solution? I would like to have nvidia drivers installed and working suspend with resume from suspend to ram.
    I checked pm-suspend.log:
    http://pastebin.archlinux.fr/478611
I don't see anything wrong here. I asked on polish site about kernel 3.12, and with Ubuntu they said it works. Why on Arch only kernel 3.9 works with resuming from suspend to ram and olny when there are no nvidia drivers (because they need new kernel, i could even use old but i'm not so exprienced to compile kernel myself, won't do that, and with downgrade script from AUR i didn't found nvidia driver for older kernels. There are old kernel, even 3.0.xx but only nvidia drivers from 325 that they need 3.12 kernel).
My spec is AMD X4 955, NVIDIA GTX260, 4GB ram. Arch is x32, kernel 3.12.5.1 (other don't work with resume too, only 3.9 with nouveau).

I will try it, but i don't think that this "fix" will really help me - i installed newest driver, installed binary driver from nvidia website on kernel 3.9.8.1 and resuming from suspend to ram works. With newer kernel it just doesen't so if this would be a nvidia MSI problem than i would have it also on kernel 3.9.8.1 where i installed newest drivers ( i installed binary because i don't know which package from aur would work with this kernel, and on aur thare are only drivers from 325, no older).
Edit - just as i said. Doesen't work. It is not related to nvidia because it happens on nouveau. It is kernel fault.

  • K9A2 CF Suspend to RAM not working?

Suspend to RAM worked for a little while but the last three restarts have failed.  I'm using beta BIOS 1.21 and 32-bit WinXP.  BIOS 1.1 never worked.  Is anyone else having problems?  I've set the BIOS to use S3 instead of the default S1 and tried enabling force GPU to POST on restart (or whatever it's called).

Yes, I installed the Phenom drivers from amd.com.
My old board had a nForce 570 Ultra chipset.
I want 64-bit Vista for the 64-bit part.  Only being able to use 3.25GB of my 4GB RAM annoys me.  I could put Fedora 8 on it but then I couldn't play games very well (yes, I know about Cedega).  Could run other stuff in a 32-bit WinXP VMWare Player instance though, and upgrade to 8GB RAM, hmm.

  • [Solved] Suspend to RAM not working.

I just installed Arch on an old box with an MSI K8T Neo motherboard and I can't get suspend to RAM working. On the BIOS I have two ACPI modes: S1/POS  and S3/STR. If I set it to S1 it does suspend but the hardware is not actually shut off (the fans, LEDs, and monitor backlight says on). With the S3 setting it does a complete shutdown so when I turn it back on it fresh boots instead of resuming. Suspend to both effectively hibernates when the BIOS setting is S3, with S1 it behaves just as suspend to disk. I've tried using systemd, pm-utils, and writing to /sys/power/state directly. All the same.
Just until last night I had Windows XP x64 installed and suspend was working just fine. I mostly use it as a file and printer server but I don't want it running all the time so I use Wake-on-Lan so it wakes up on demand and I'll be using a cron script (or whatever is called on systemd) to put it back to sleep after a while.
    Any suggestions?

Flashing the bios fixed the problem. I didn't do it before because the readme that comes with the bios firmware said it was the version I had but it's actually 5 major versions newer.

  • Toshiba NB550 doesn't wake up on Suspend to Ram

    Hi everybody,
I don't know what to do. I got the NB550D and installed Ubuntu 11.10 on it. I am really happy with the machine, but when I do a suspend to ram, the netbook won't wake up. I got a black screen, the LEDs are on, but no reaction on buttons or ALT+PRINT+rseinub. I figured out that the fglrx driver is not the Problem, because the Problem exists even when I start it from the console or use the default driver.
I also tried uswsusp and to debug pm-suspend with pm-trace, but the only thing i got was a match in main.c.
I really don't know where to search the problem. When I put it to sleep and wake up it immedially it works, but when the NB sleeps about a few minutes it crashes.
Please help me, I'm going nuts!
    thank you
    greets

    Hi there
It sounds really strange that you get different results when Suspending to Ram a short time compared to Suspending to Ram a longer time.
Are You certain that time really is a factor and that other reasons are not the cause?
I mean, let's say You did 10 suspend-to-RAM's with 5 seconds suspeded state - would the unit wake up perfectly all those 10 times?
And if You did the same and let the unit be suspended 5 minutes - would it fail 10 out of 10 times?
If the symptoms are that consequent I would suggest you
1: Check that you are up to date with all packages and are using a "clean" install.
2: check you got the latest BIOS
3: if You have the latest BIOS and are updated and clean, file a bug at Ubuntu Bugzilla.
    BR
    Tom

  • Hibernate not working but why

I have followed the wiki and added "resume=/dev/sda2" to my kernel paramteters. (sda2 being my swap partition). I have added the 'resume' hook to mkinitcpio.conf, and also regenerated it with "mkinitcpio -p linux" as outlined in the wiki page on suspend/hibernate.
When i run 'systemctl hibernate' it appears to actually go into hibernation, but then when i turn it on again it boots from scratch.
Oddly I notice that in dmesg it shows my kernel parameters but 'resume=/dev/sda2' is missing ! I don't understand why/how, and I even got rid of all other boot entires with uefibootmgr and double checked which the current one was, and it shows right there that the current one does have 'resume' appended to the kernel parameters, yet in dmesg it's missing ! If that's unclear what I mean is
from efibootmgr (note #0006 which is current and first in boot order, has the resume paramter added):

im sure i've messed something up... is there anywhere else kernel parameters are stored? Or is there some command I'm forgetting to 'refresh' efibootmgr after adding the new line, sort of like how you have to do /sbin/lilo after changing lilo config? As you can probably tell I am booting EFI direct from kernel, no bootloader installed.
Or maybe I should remove Boot0000 entirely? But again it says BootCurrent is 0006 so I don't get it!!

  • Suspend to ram in KDE vs. GNOME

I recently switched over to KDE for a little bit to test it out and see how it felt. I decided to stick with GNOME, but I realized that in KDE, the "start" menu's suspend to ram worked perfectly fine. Switching back to GNOME, it hangs at a blinking cursor when I try the suspend to ram via the "start menu". The commandline pm-suspend works fine.
What's the difference between the way KDE and GNOME call suspend?

    Hello majiq!
Is there any error output after this method, or What experience do you have(Kde) ?

  • HP dv3510nr suspend-to-ram / resume SATA issues

I'm trying to get suspend to ram working on my HP dv3510nr.. The problem is that when it resumes, the SATA drive seems to error out and cause the file system to fail.  I've tried s2ram -f with a few of it's options, and pm-suspend.  Neither resume properly (Actually, from the dmesg output it looks like it doesn't suspend properly either).  Suspend takes about 30-40 seconds, but resume takes about 3-5.  I have installed a Patriot 32GB SSD drive on this machine.  I'm wondering if that can cause something like this.  I am also using dm-crypt w/ aes-xts encryption for /dev/sda2.  This maps to /dev/mapper/root, which is an ext4 partition.  /dev/sda1 is an encrypted swap partition that gets setup on each boot by /etc/crypttab.cd

I have an HP dv7-6000 notebook that I can't get suspend to RAM working on. When I tell Linux to suspend, the screen turns off, I hear the hard disk turn off, but all the lights stay on (power, wireless, and touchpad). After a couple minutes the BIOS kicks in and runs the fans at maximum speed. The only way to get out of this situation is to hold down the power button for a hard shutdown.
It's almost as if the suspend was successful, but "incomplete," because the system for whatever reason is stuck powered on.
I have updated the BIOS and there is no difference. I have also tried different acpi_os_name values based on my DSDT table ("Windows 2001," "Windows 2009," etc.).
Both pm-utils log files (pm-powersave.log and pm-suspend.log) are blank. I have also tried uswsusp, and the same thing happens. I have not tried hibernate yet because I don't have a swap partition.
    Some additional hardware information:

+1, I'm having the same issue with both "pm-suspend" and "sytemctl suspend", not always but happening 1 out of 5 times maybe, this started happening since the 3.10* upgrade, currently running 3.10.5-1 on my modest compaq.
