Suspicious files in profile folder

There are two executable files in my Firefox profile folder called SESSIONSTORE.JS.EXE and TEMP.EXE. Both files have the McAfee logo as their icon (large red M with gray background).
I have scanned both files with Bitdefender and Malwarebytes, and neither file was flagged as suspicious.
Both files have a filedate of 12/19/2008 and each is 3,092 KB in length.
Are these files OK, are they possibly a leftover from McAfee antivirus or Site Advisor (which I used to use) or should I delete them?
I am running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.
Thanks for your help.

You can delete them as they appear to be quite old from 2008
Maybe it is time to create a new profile if the current profile is that old to remove remnants from previous Firefox versions.
I notice that your System Details List is showing a lot of prefs that are no longer supported in the current release and that you also have a user.js file that could possibly add some of those prefs.
It is quite likely that your localstore.rdf has quite a large file size and stores obsolete data.
See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from an existing profile to the new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

• Only have cache files in Profile folder

My laptop froze whilst using firefox and will no longer turn on. I have taken out the hdd to backup important files including my firefox profile. However, the profile folder only contains cache folders and nothing else. What has happened to my bookmarks information? I was running Firefox 14 on Windows 7.

You did look in the wrong location (likely in Local Settings\Application Data).
This location is used for the cache and not for the main Firefox profile folder:
*C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
The main profile folder is located here:
*C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
If you didn't include this folder in the backup then I'm afraid that your personal data is lost.

• I have moved my Entourage inbox files to Profile folder but they still don't show up now what?

After reading posts about moving old Entourage emails to Thunderbird, I created the mbox files from Entourage and moved these to the Profiles folder in Thunderbird, restarted, but still my old emails do not show up in my Thunderbird mailbox. What else can I try?

You can try click the "Restore Default Set" button in the Customize window to restore the default toolbar set up.
You can also check for problems with the localstore.rdf file.

• How to open Drafts file in Profile Folder Adobe says can't open HELP!

Lately several drafts just disappear. Today a very important draft I was making/had finished, disappeared. Read in forum to shut down Thunderbird, go to Profiles then open the draft file, however when I try to open draft file Adobe PDF deal says it cannot open. Am desperate to get this draft that disappeared back ASAP!
I am running Windows 7 and so need little step by little step instructions on how to accomplish this.
BTW I see 2 draft files 1st appears like a blank page just says Drafts. The other says Drafts.msf and has the PDF logo within. Both of them, when I try to open I get error message from Adobe Reader saying " Adobe Reader could not open Drafts.msf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)"
Thanks in advance for ANY help in the matter ASAP as this particular draft is of great importance & sure don't want to have to redo such a very long detailed email!!!

• After a crash with Win XP Professional, I am missing all the important Profile files. How can I recover passwords and history if the key3.db and places.sqlite files are not shown in the profile folder?

I only have a large urlclassifier3.sqlite file in the old default profile folder. Help!

Sounds like boot sector corruption to me! I suggest you download Testdisk a product of CG Security. Use the latest version that is NOT beta. Boot the computer to a bootable CD such as Hiren's Boot CD. Run the DOS version. Do NOT write anything to the hard disk, such as a log! Do a deep search for lost partitions. When given the opportunity, look at files and folders. Finally, do a rebuild of the boot sector, and compare that to the current boot sector and backup sector. The write a verified version of the boot sector back to the hard disk. Note: Testdisk 6.11.3, under DOS, will show DELETED FILES IN RED. You can then OFFLOAD them to another drive or USB stick. Good luck.

Downgrade to an older nightly that works for a week or so, then test again to see if the bug's still there. In the mean time, report the bug on Bugzilla if it hasn't already been. There's really nothing you can do about bugs in nightlies.
(A similar sort of bug that triggered 60 seconds after opening, every time, was what got me out of using nightlies as my main browser.)

disaster, thanks firefox 1 year of photos lost

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
I'm back to normal again.

• Number of files in Thunderbird e-mail "profile" folder

Several versions of Thuderbird in the past, e-mail was stored in roughly one file per e-mail "folder". A few versions ago this changed and the number of files in my "profile" folder exploded from around one hundred to almost 120 thousand!
What happened and why? How can I reduce the number of files?
This is important to me because I synchronize my e-mail "profile" folder between multiple computers for backup and the number of files has made this become very painful (time consuming and hard to manage). I am unable to do this some other way due to my e-mail account servers and the fact that some of the computers are not turned on all of the time.
Thunderbird is 31.4.0 running on Windows XP Pro 32-bit.

In my "Profile" folder are the following--
- Disk folder RecycleBin.ffs_tmp is 1.34Gb and contains 578 files even though I have made multiple attempts to "Compress folders" and typically delete e-mail permanently.
- Disk folder Inbox.mozmsgs is 82.5 Mb and contains almost 11K files like:
0.0.0.1DC.1CBC221817A786C.0%40mail6.idgpublishing.com.wdseml
- Disk folder Trash.mozmsgs is 882Kb and contains 142 files even though my Trash folder has less than 40 files. Example file names:
0.0.9.BF4.1CFAA6AF4294548.0%40omp.e.tigerdirect.com.wdseml
3W98B75I.4527022%40roperusa.com.wdseml
For each of my e-mail folders, there now appears to be a disk folder with the same name as the e-mail folder and a "file extension" of ".mozmsgs". And at least some of these appear in both the "Profile" folder, "...\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\5yx36fcc.default", and in a folder within that one, "..\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\5yx36fcc.default\Mail\Local Folders".

• Upgrade to 3.6.8 deleted my History on close. Have undeleted yesterdays files, can i find and restore history to profile folder?

Apparently the "clear recent history on close" option was enabled on the 3.6.8 upgrade. Didn't see that coming.
I've undeleted yesterday's deleted files and saved them to a separate drive.
Can I copy or restore the "recovered" history file back into my profile folder?
If so, can you tell me the ''file name(s)'' that contains browsing history?

If you updated from Firefox 2.0.0.20 then you need history.dat.
That file was used in Firefox 2. to store the history, Firefox 3 uses places.sqlite.
If you have used Firefox 3 versions in the past then may already have had a file places.sqlite in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and in that case you need to delete places.sqlite to make Firefox import the history from history.dat and the bookmarks from bookmarks.html.

• Missing profiles folder and files

Hi all,
I had the damn "snap-do" malware on my Firefox, so I tried uninstalling FF completely and then re-installing it to fix the problem... but that just led to the issue of Firefox now not being able to find my old profile.
I am currently getting the error message;
"Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."
I know there are plenty of other threads regarding this issue but they all point to the direction of creating a new profile using the following method: "Launch the Run dialog box, type in: firefox.exe -p ...".
When I try this though I get the same error as before.
In short, I absolutely cannot find the "profile.ini" file, and am assuming it no longer exists on my system.
Can anyone help?

Hello,
Reinstalling Firefox doesn't normally solve anything, as most problems are confined to the profile. You can use the Reset Firefox feature instead, which preserves essential data like bookmarks and passwords.
* [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]
# Press the Windows logo orb on the taskbar to bring up the Start Menu.
# In the search box, type the following then press Enter: '''%AppData%\Mozilla\Firefox\'''
# In the Windows Explorer window that opens, you should see the ''profiles.ini'' file.
# If the file is missing, you can create it manually in Notepad. The contents should look something like the following, substituting the example profile folder name with your actual profile folder name.

<nowiki>[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/2htx1693.default</nowiki>

There is nothing to worry about that folder.
That is the actual Firefox Profile Folder that stores your personal data.
There are two of them:
* C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
*C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\
The latter is the location used for the browsing cache and a few other files.
See also the about:cache page for the location of the cache.
