Sustaining "Turbo Boost" on i5-2520 in Windows 8

I purchased an x220 last August and recently took advantage of the Microsoft offer for Windows 8 that if you purchased it within a certain range of period you can buy the upgrade for $14.99.
Everything seems to be working fine so far with a huge learning curve.  But I missed the "turbo boost" enable/disable button that came in lenovo's power management.
In my windows 7, I was able to go into power management, turn up the slider to more performance oriented and click the "Turbo Boost" to enable it when I play games.  But now, it is missing, and the turbo boost meter I downloaded seems to throttle up and down which cause fps decreases in the game itself.
I understand that Windows 8 applications and drivers are still in the works from reading this forum.  And that only the power management driver is available for window 8 and not the application.  However, is there some way to switch the turbo boost to max everytime I play games?

Check BIOS settings first.
Also make sure 'Max Processor State' is set to '100%' in your active power plan.

  • GT70 2PE Dominator Pro Turbo Boost Doubt

    Hi!
I'm new into MSI laptops and I've bought an GT70 PE Dominator Pro.
All buttons and apps work perfect but when I press the G button nothing happens. It just light for a second and nothing else. My question is: How can I enable de Boost in this laptop?
    Thank you very much!!

The turbo boost feature is automatic. As long as your power settings include it. Typically only high performance is the only one that allows turbo boost. Turbo boost is only activiated if windows power settings allow for 100% cpu. 99% or anything lower disables turbo boost. This is typically set up this way, because of battery life. Running turbo boost, even when not needing this top speed, will make the chip run as fast as it needs to, so running cpu at 99% limits this turbo feature, but still leaves the 2.7ghz. This greatly increases battery. Personal experiences with this, I run high performance, and then I run the msi 'office' power settings. Doing stuff like this (web browsing ect) will get me 2-3 hours high performance setting, and 4-5 hours on office.
The turbo boost speeds you 'claim' 3.7 are only for single core. I'm not 100% sure, but it goes something like 1 core 3.7, 2 cores active its 3.5, and all 4 cores is something like 3.2. This is all non overclocked. And the biggest things with the 4810 chips that's in our gt70 dominator pro laptops is actually hindered by the tdp of the chip. The tdp is 47w. And unless you get the 4960mx chip, all the i7's have this 47w limit. That is, the total amount of wattage the chips will or can allow. So typical 'gaming' or 'workstation' loads, with turbo boost active, you will typically see 3.299 ghz. Those programs are very much typically multi core (4 core) loads.
I hope this helps. If not, just post a more specific question.

    Hi,
To answer your last question first, the Turbo Boost Technology Driver is only intended for processors with an integrated GPU - the i7-720QM does not have this.
More difficult is why you observe no Turbo Boost on AC Power.
    Try the following.
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as soon as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
When windows has reloaded, download and install the Turbo Boost Technology Monitor from Intel on the following link and see what this shows.

  • Windows Server 2012 enable memory Turbo boost

    Hello guys.
I have a Sony Vaio VPC-F113FX notebook with Quad Core Intel i7 processor with 8GB of RAM.
It is installed a Windows Server 2012 Standard.
I bought an SD card of 64 GB and intended to use the Turbo Boost feature in memory, only this option is not displayed in the properties of the operating system memory card. Can you help me configure or enable this feature in Windows Server 2012.
    Thanks
Obrigado por contactar o fórum Microsoft Technet!

    Hi Hezequias,
Thanks for posting. The Turbo Boost feature is just provide by Intel can cab be obly used on the Intel i5 and Intel i7.
As you mentioned that you used a 64GB SD card and intended to use the Turbo Boost feature, so I guess you might talked about the Ready Boost.
Ready Boost is a feature provide by Microsoft, Ready Boost is a disk caching software component which allows any compatible mass storage device to be used as a hard-drive memory cache for the purpose of increasing random read access
speed to the  hard drive. Potentially compatible ReadyBoost devices include USB flash drives, flash memory,solid-state drivers(SSDs), and SD cards. There is a limitation of 32 GB per ReadyBoost device.
However the Ready Boot feature was just supported by the Microsoft Clients(such as windows 7) but not the server edition.
So the feature can't be used on windows server 2012 standard operation system.
    Hope it helps.
If you have any concerns, feel free to post back.
    Best Regards,
    Elaine

Have you made sure you are using the high performance profile? Here is where you can check:
Double check you performance profile and make sure its on HIgh Performance. Also download CPU-Z to monitor your CPU speed. Im unsure if the turbo boost applies to all the cores of the processor. CPU-Z will give you a better idea of whats going on.
    CPU-Z

  • Intel Turbo Boost Driver

    Greetings
I have the i3-M330 chip on my laptop.  I was looking at laptops with i5-430 ( ? ) chips.  CNET stated that the later comes with Turbo boost.  But  seems the Turbo Boost driver is available for my chipset also.  Has anyone tried to install it on this chipset?   Does anyone have any preference between the i3s adn i5s?  I like my laptop alot since the video card is separate.  I am just curious how the Turbo boost driver works on i3s.  I remember the MMX technology was not very successful, and this Turbo boost seems like a similar attempt.  Any thought?

Please install the drivers as per the instructions from the following weblinks depending on the operating system installed on the system:

  • Hyper-V stopped turbo boost and cpu park on my intel 4702mq processor?

    Hi I just got my lenovo thinkpad e540(core i7 4702mq ,256 hyper-x ssd, nvidea geforce 2gb...)
I installed windows 8.1  and server 2012 r2 to separate personal and business use.
The cpu was running at many speeds to preserve battery life (between 0.7ghz and 3.2ghz on turbo boost). After installing the  hyper-v  role, the speed in task manager is stale at 2.19ghz and
all the cores are not being parked even when the system is idle, is this a bug or that's just how virtualization work??
    Thanks!!

Performance mode probably means having higher voltages or higher "optimized" settings to run the system. Fail safe mode already spelt out its intentions to keep the system from failing.
For details, you can contact MSI for more information.
As I stated in my first post, I carefully went through all of the BIOS settings and the only thing I could find different between 'default' and 'optimized' is the setting for 'Intel Turbo Boost'.
I will post a question on the BIOS board about any other differences, but until then my original question remains...
...does anyone know of any problems (and hopefully FIXES) with the P55-GD80 and Intel Turbo Boost?

Turboboost is a feature which you cannot enable or disable it. Its activated when OS requests for it. Download the Intel® Turbo Boost Technology Monitor from here and see how this features gets automatically active on the Notebook.
There is a support document available at below link explaining what and how Turboboost feature works

    dmarinov,
Short answer is you do not need the driver.  The driver is intended for laptops using the same CPU but integrated GPU only.  Since your PC has a discrete GPU (ATI), the TBT driver is not necessary.

  • Test cpu speed turbo boost

I like to monitor my system and keep an eye on performance and temperatures to better understand the systems operation. My MacBook Pro case gets hot in a non-repetitive manner so I thought that the CPU might be using the Intel turbo boost technology and that was causing the system to get warm but I can' t find out what the CPU's speed or mode is in OS X. What utility does Apple or Intel supply to monitor this feature? I know windows has a Intel Turbo Boost Monitor application, What are we using here at Apple.
    Thanks

    Likely your integrated grpahics.
Look in your System Preferences > Energy Saver and uncheck "use graphics switching" this will use your GPU instead of the CPU for graphics and calm down your CPU temps and readings.

  • Disable turbo boost

I've enabled   turbo boost and now don't seem able to disable it - anyone help?  (w520)

    Hi Tinysally,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Intel Turbo Boost is very useful in certain situations, especially if you’re doing “heavy” computational work. Intel Turbo Boost Technology is usually enabled by default. You can disable and enable the technology through the BIOS if you have an option listed there. Once enabled, Intel Turbo Boost Technology works automatically under operating system control.
To disable Intel turbo boost within Windows, try the below fix.
Go into Power options (Control panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options) and click Change plan settings near your plan.
Then click on Change advanced power settings.
Scroll down to Processor power management and expand it.
Expand Maximum processor state and modify both on battery and Plugged in to 99%.
Then simply click Apply and OK.
Also please make sure, that Minimum processor state is not greater than Maximum processor state (in this case - 99%), because this fix won’t work. I suggest you to set it to 5% or so.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • Turbo-Boost: How to find out about current processor sped?

On the new Mac Pros the processors can enter Turbo-Boost-mode. How can I find out at which speed the processors are currently running?
    Thanks!

It is complicated. Can happen in nanoseconds. And depends on processor and load as to how many cores will go to sleep and how many go into turbo... if the app is single threaded.
It is something you don't really need to know or worry about.
There are better tools for Windows to monitor core temp and frequency (and voltage).
