SVG to PDF: how?

Hi,
I designed my own company logo in Inkscape and want to give it as a vector to a publisher to make f.e. my business cards, but as it consists of several objects with gradients, these objects simply are not saved in a PDF, (E)PS or AI.
I read on several sites that this is a problem with Inkscape (and has been for several years now). Is there another program I could use to import the SVG and export to PDF or AI *with* the gradients? Or is the only option really to export it to PNG in 1200x1200?
How can anyone use this as a semi-professional publishing program if this functionality is missing/lacking?

Well, you can find the files I'm talking about here: http://www.synergylaw.be/logo/ . The 'final' logo is a plain black and white one and the final-5-version is the same but with the supplied PNG as a pattern-fill.
N30N wrote:I never suggested that they should used Inkscape. SVG is a standard vector format that all high end apps (I've tried) can open. If they accept AI files they should IMO accept SVG's (and yes I know AI files are just PDF's now a days but they must have illustrator about for old version of the format).
Yep, in a perfect world. I have tried to get him to try Inkscape, but now this limitation popped up I cannot expect him to consider using it seriously. I do wonder if Adobe Illustrator or Quark cannot import the svg's I created. Maybe he hasn't used that function yet...

It can be found from the menu bar window>Align and Distribute.
Yep - thx for pointing it out! In my defense: this is an odd place for this function, but it's there!

It dose support vector formats but you'll to use the SVG Import Filter for SVG's (not tried it myself).
THX again - learning a great eal here! Will try it out to produce my PDF!

  • SVG to PDF/AI gradient and transparency issues

    This is probably quite off topic for these forums, so apologies for that up front, but I can't seem to get answers in more appropriate places.
    I am trying to use inkscape or rsvg-convert, which both use cairo, to convert SVG to PDF.
    Firstly, when I open the SVG in Illustrator directly, everything works as expected, but the cairo converted PDF has a couple of problems.
    Typically I get "An unknown  shading type was encountered" and the offending shapes are un-editable  "images" with a clipping mask over them.
    There are two  circumstances that result in problems for me.
    1) A gradient with  only 2 stops.
    In the following example I have duplicated the  offset="0" stop which fixes things and means that the resulting shape  that is filled with this gradient works fine. Without the duplicate  declaration, the gradient is converted to  an un-editable image with a  clipping mask when the PDF is viewed in Illustrator.
       <linearGradient id="ian_symbols_b8a58aafc1f12e74492e9e865b7f569b"  gradientUnits="userSpaceOnUse" x1="113.7275" y1="136.9414" x2="197.0259"  y2="136.9414">
        <stop offset="0" style="stop-color:#927A62"  id="stop1472" />
        <stop offset="0"  style="stop-color:#927A62" id="stop1472_dup" />
        <stop  offset="1" style="stop-color:#93866F" id="stop1474" />
       </linearGradient>
    2) A shape that has  an opacity that is less than "1". I don't know how to fix this one and  still maintain the look of the original. I understand that there are  some issues with transparency and the PDF format, but obviously the full  AI version of the PDF format these days supports transparency.
    Does anyone have any experience doing server-side conversions of SVG to PDF and have managed to create a PDF which contains gradients and transparency that are actually editable once opened in Illustrator?
    Or does anyone know if there is something more I  can do with the original SVG code to make the opacity work ok in the  final PDF?
    Thanks

    Works fine for me as .ai with pdf comptible turned on. You may have input transparency in the wrong location in Illustrator. Change opacity in the gradient palette, and not tint in the color palette.
    Opacity is 0 here, anything less tha 100% will create tranaprency. To proof in Illustratopr do a Shift Command D to change your background to a checkerboard pattern.

  • I need to turn an indesign document into an editable pdf. how do I do that?

    I need to turn an indesign document into an editable pdf, how do I do that?

    InCopy is a solution, but it's not the only viable solution.
    I update many books, from 200 pages to 3,200 pages every year, long document, very techincal tax books.
    Some are done through InCopy, some are edited word files and rtfs exported from InDesign, some are marked up hard copies etc.
    It totally depends on the clients technical ability with computers. Last year I taught over 30 authors of ours how to use InCopy. Some were receptive, some were dubious, some were totally clueless.
    And on the dubious and totally clueless I spent more time troubleshooting their problems than I would normally with a Word/RTF option.
    Some people are capable of switching to InCopy or even know how to use it in the first place. For anyone never used InDesign or InCopy before then it's a massive learning curve to jump from MS Word et al word processors, to InCopy.
    I do agree, it is the best solution that's out there, technically. But that solution is not usable by a lot of people.
    Yeh if the client is comfortable with InCopy then it's the way forward.
    But in most cases, in my experience, it's faster and more efficient to Export the text as RTF and let the author update the RTF. That leaves you in control of reinserting the text and formatting it correctly. Rather than letting the client add bold, underline, italics, superscript, subscripts, crazy workarounds because they didn't know how to do it properly. And in the end you end up with 2 or 3 times the amount of work than is necessary, just cleaning up what the client has done in InCopy that does not suit the overall formatting of the publications.

  • File is huge when combined or changed to PDF, how do I get the file to a normal size to print?

    Files are to large to print once they are PDF, how do I get them to a normal 8x11 size to print?

    So why is it when I send these PDF files to clients they are to large for clients to print?
    If I send a combined PDF file that is 3817KB, which a client has said is to large for them to print.
    I send it to our office manager, she will print it, scan it back to me as a PDF, it will come
    back as 375KB, the client can then print the file.
    My question is, was/is there something I need to change in the process of scanning, combining files
    to PDF that would create a smaller size file when done?
    Sorry for all the confusion

    Sorry, I'm lost.First I thought this was about page size. But you say it isn't. You say it's about file size.  You've combined files of 494 + 441 = 935 KB, and you get 944 KB. This seems fine and you say it is fine. So what is the problem? Are you now on still a third meaning of huge, about size on screen?

    I converted my computer files to PDF how can I reverse the changes??? even my internet explorer. Home version:  HELP The Adobe file I used was a adobe reader 11

    You mention Adobe Reader. Reader cannot convert a file to PDF. Reader lets you view PDF.
    When the Acrobat (Standard or Pro) application is used to create PDF from source files the source files are not deleted.
    Hopefully whatever you used to get a PDF from your source files behaves like Acrobat (does not delete the source file).
    If so, the source files are still present.

  • Converting svg to pdf,eps

    Hello,
    How i can programatically convert SVG file to PDF and EPS using Illustrator SDK or  Illustrator Scripting API(if it's not same)? it would be great to do it in php script

    The Illustrator SDK is a C++ SDK for writing plugins, so I don't think that will be helpful to you. The Scripting API is a javascript-like approach that still requires you to run Illustrator. If you're trying to do this via a webpage -- since you mentioned PHP -- I'm not sure that's doable. Or at the very least, it'll be tricky. You might be better off finding another utility somewhere to do SVG -> PDF/EPS, assuming there are such.

  • SVG in pdf created with FOP

    Hello,
    is it possible to include SVG`s to a pdf report, which is created with FOP?
    I read something like Batik....
    Does anybody have any experiences about that?
    Thanks,

    Thank you, CtDave, for your speedy reply and for the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' knowledge base article. Word 2000 is one of Microsoft's masterpieces - by disabling 'autosave', the application is totally stable, does not require 'activation' by Microsoft. Acrobat 9 enables 'saving' of interactive .pdf forms, a most valuable feature and one much appreciated by anyone completiing such forms. There must be more to this issue than 'incompatibility', because I can create a test Word 2000 document, hyperlink a valid URL, convert to .pdf with Acrobat 9, and the hyperlink works fine in Acrobat 9. When I attempt to do this using a much more complex Word 2000 document, embedded with scores of hyperlinks, these links fail to work following conversion to .pdf with Acrobat 9, but work fine following conversion to .pdf with  Acrobat 6. I can then use Acrobat 9 to open the .pdf created with Acrobat 6, and successfully edit any of these fully functional hyperlinks using the 'Link tool'. I don't know who prepared the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' article (AF1908DCd01) - no credits were cited, and I'm far from certain that this authentically belongs to Adobe's knowledge base. So I appreciate your sharing this information with me, but I cannot say that my question has been definitively answered. If you have any further information or tips, please reply in this thread. /rmbrown

  • PRINT to PDF - how to retain links as links and images as images

    I print webpages to PDF all the time.
    but it is not very good from fiefox for me, because of 3 reasons
    1 the links on the webpage dont stay as hyperlinks in the PDF file (I test by clicking on the link in the pdf, it is blue and underlined, but does not go anywhere when clicked). This happens 100% time
    2 the images dont say as images in the pdf (I test by click hold image on the iphone and if its an image, the popup will be save to image to camera roll) - this fails to happen. This happens 100% time
    3 the layout is not IDENTICAL to the webpage. This happens about 50% time
    so my workaround has been to
    1 highlight the desired text
    2 click email button (an add-on)
    3 cut pasted the selected text to email
    4 send to myself
    5 print the email to pdf
    and it works...
    so this is a wee clunky ....
    and clogs up my mailbox a little more than i desire...
    SO

  • Safari 5.1.7 does not open PDF How can this be fixed?

    I have been having to use Firefox to see PDF's.  How can this be fixed in Safari 5.1.7 ?

    Back up all data.
    Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
    If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.
