SVM and Vertis volume management Simple Question

Pls guys can you interrelate the terminologies in Vertis volume management with that of SVM ? wht are this in SVM ?
Vertis
disk group
volume group
logical volumes
to SVM terminologies
soft partition , etc....

I'm sure there is a better answer, if you had sound level measuring equipment. I'm saying human ears are different (in sensitivity and size), different earbuds play at different levels for the same setting on the iPod, and even different iPod models play at different levels for the same setting. Another consideration is distance of the sound source from the ear drum. In-ear earbuds are the closest, so the actual sound they produce is the lowest for a given level of loudness, and the loudness probably varies upon how far IN a particular user inserts them. Regular earbuds are a bit more distant, so they produce a bit more sound. Over-the-ear headphones are farther still, so they produce even more sound. And living room speakers are across the room, so they need to produce many times the sound, for the same level of loudness. Therefore, just measuring the actual sound produced will not give the answer either.
So you're not going to get an answer like +9 out of 14 on your iPod is safe but 10 is not+.
An equally important factor is probably exposure time. If I'm listening to my iPod for two hour a day, that will have less impact on my hearing than listening for ten hours a day. If I went to a dance club once a month, I wouldn't be worried about my hearing. If I worked at a dance club, I would be wearing military grade ear plugs.

  • WebStart Flash and Veritas Volume Manager

I would like to use WebStart Flash for backup of the system
disk. The goal is to be able to recover the system disk rapidly.
It works perfectly for systems without Veritas Volume
    Manager on the system disk.
However, if Veritas Volume Manager is installed and used
for mirroring the root disk, the system is not able to boot using
WebStart Flash. This is probably because the "private region"
of the disk is not included in the flash archive.
Does anybody have a solution for this, or does any of
you successfully combine WebStart Flash and Veritas
    Volume Manager?
I use Jumpstart and the install_type is configured to
    flash_install.
The question was also asked in the newsgroup
    comp.unix.solaris.
    Rgds,
    Henrik

For many reasons, today you cannot save the VxVM
private region information as an implicit part of a
flash archive. The procedure would likely be to
unencapsulate the root drive, create the flash archive,
then re-encapsulate the root drive. This is an ugly
procedure and may cause more pain than it is worth.
When a root disk is encapsulated, an entry is put
into the /etc/system file which says to use the VxVM
or SVM logical volume for the rootdev rather than
the actual device from which the system was originally
booted. When you create a flash archive, this modification
to the /etc/system is carried along. But, when you install
it on a new system which doesn't have VxVM properly
    installed already (a chicken-and-the-egg problem)
then the change of the rootdev to the logical volume
will fail. The result is an unbootable system (without
using 'boot -a' and pointing to a different /etc/system
    file like /dev/null).
The current recommended process is to use a prototype
system which does not have an encapsulated root
    to create the flash archive.
VxVM also uses the ELM license manager which will
tie the VxVM runtime license to the hostid. This makes
moving flash archives with VxVM to other machines
    impractical or difficult.
The long term solution would be to add logical volume
management support to the JumpStart infrastructure.
I'm not counting on this anytime soon :-(

  • Load Balancing Directory Servers with Access Manager - Simple questions

    Hi.
We are in the process of configuring 2 Access Manager instances (servers) accessing the same logical LDAP repository (comprising physically of two Directory Servers working together with Multi-Master Replication configured and tested) For doing this, we are following guide number 819-6258.
The guide uses BigIP load balancer for load balancing the directory servers. However, we intend to use Directory Proxy Server. Since we faced some (unresolved) issues last time that we used DPS, there are some simple questions that I would be very grateful to have answers to:
    1. The guide, in section 3.2.10 (To configure Access Manager 1 with the Directory Server load balancer), talks about making changes at 4 places, and replacing the existing entry (hostname and port) with the load balancer's hostname and port (assuming that the load balancer has already been configured). It says that changes need not be made on Access Manager 2 since the LDAPs are in replication, and hence changes will be replicated at all places. However, the guide also states that changes have to be made in two files, namely AMConfig.properties, and the serverconfig.xml file. But these changes will not be reflected on Access Manager 2, since these files are local on each machine.
Question 1. Do changes have to be made in AMConfig.properties and serverconfig.xml files on the other machine hosting Access Manager 2?
Question 2: What is the purpose of putting these values here? Specifically, what is achieved by specifying the Directory server host and port in AMConfig.properties, as well as in serverconfig.xml?
Question 3. In the HTTP console, there is the option of specifying multiple primary LDAP servers, as well as multiple secondary LDAP servers. What is the purpose of these? Are secondary servers attempted when none of the list in the primary list are accessible? Also, if there are multiple entries in the primary server list, are they accessed in a round robin fashion (hereby providing rudimentary load balancing), or are other servers accessed only when the one mentioned first is not reachable etc.?
    2. Since I do not have a load balancer setup yet, I tried the following deviation to the above, which, according to me, should have worked. If viewed in the HTTP console, LDAP / Membership / MSISDN and Policy configuration all pointed to the DS on host 1. When I changed all these to point to the directory server on host 2 (and made AMConfig.properties and serverconfig.xml on host 1 point to DS of host 2 as well), things should have worked fine, but apparently Access manager 1 could not be started. Error from Webserver:

In effect, AM on 1 did not start. On rolling back the changes, things again worked like previously.
Will be really grateful for any help / insight / experience on dealing with the above.
    Thanks!

Update to the above, incase anyone is reading:
We setup a similar setup in Windows, and it worked. Here is a detailed account of what was done:
    1. Host 1: Start installer, install automatically, chose Directory server, Directory Administration server, Directory Proxy server, Web server, Access Manager.
All installed, and worked fine. (AMConfig.properties, serverconfig.xml, and the info in LDAP service, all pointed to HOST1:389)
    2. Host 2: Start installer, install automatically, chose Directory server, Directory Administration server, Directory Proxy server, Web server, Access Manager.
All installed, and worked fine. (AMConfig.properties, serverconfig.xml, and the info in LDAP service, all pointed to HOST2:389)
    3. Host 1: Started replication. Set to Master
    4. Host 2: Started replication. Set to Master
    5. Host 1: Setup replication agreement to Host 2
    6. Host 2: Setup replication agreement to Host 1
    7. Initiated the remote replica from Host 1 ----> Host 2
Note that since default installation uses abc.....xyz as the encryption key, setting this to same was not an issue.
    9. Started webserver for Host 1 and logged into AM as amadmin.
    10. Added Host 2 FQDN in DNS Aliases / Realms
    11. Added http://HOST2_FQDN:80 in the Platform server (instance) list.
    12. Started Host 2 webserver. Logged in AM on Host 2, things worked fine.
At this stage, note the following:
    a) Host 1:
    AMConfig.properties file has
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=host1_FQDN
    and
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    serverconfig.xml has:
    <Server name="Server1" host="host1_FQDN" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    b) Host 2:
    AMConfig.properties file has
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=host2_FQDN
    and
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    serverconfig.xml has:
    <Server name="Server1" host="host2_FQDN" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    c) If one logs into AM, and checks LDAP servers for LDAP / Policy Configuration / Membership etc services, they all contain Host2_FQDN:389 (which makes sense, since replica 2 was initialized from 1)
    Returning back to the configuations:
    13. On Host 1, login into the Admin server console of the Directory server. Navigate to the DPS, and confgure the following:
    a) Network Group
    b) LDAP servers
    c) Load Balancing
    d) Change Group
    e) Action on-bind
    f) Allow all actions (permit modification / deletion etc.).
    g) any other configuations required - Am willing to give detailed steps if someone needs them to help me / themselves! :)
So now, we have DPS configured and running on Host1:489, and distributing load to DS1 and DS2 on a 50:50 basis.
    14. Now, log into AM on Host 1, and instead of Host1_fqdn:389 (for DS) in the following places, specify Host1_fqdn:489 (for the DPS)--
    LDAP Authentication
    MSISDN server
    Membership Service
    Policy configuation.
Verified that this propagated to the Policy Configuration service and the LDAP authentication service that are already registered with the default organization.
    15. Log out of AM. Following the documentation, modify directory.host and directory.port in AMConfig.properties to point to Host 1_FQDN and 489 respectively. Make this change in AMConfig.properties of both Host 1 as well as 2.
    16. Edit serverconfig.xml on both hosts, and instead of they pointing to their local directory servers, point both to host1_FQDN:489
    17. When you start the webserver, it will refuse to start. Will spew errors such as:

    Success!
The server https-host1_FQDN has started up.
The server infact, didn't start up (nothing even listening on 58080).
However, if AMConfig.properties is left as it originally was, and only serverconfig.xml files were changed as mentioned above, web servers started fine, and things worked all okay. (Alright, except for some glitches when viewed in /amconsole. If /amserver/console is accessed, all is good. Can this mean that all is still not well? I am not sure).
So far so good. Now comes the sad part. When the same is done on Solaris 9, things dont work. You continue to get the above error, OR the following error, and the web server will refuse to start:
Differences in Solaris and Windows are as follows:
    1. Windows hosts have 1 IP and hostname. Solaris hosts have 3 IPs and hostnames (for DS, DPS, and webserver).
No other difference from an architectural perspective.
Any help / insight on why the above is not working (and why the hell does the documentation seem so sketchy / insecure / incorrect).
    Thanks a bunch!

  • IO issues on Red Hat Linux SAN storage and veritas volume manager

    Oracle 11.0.1.7:
We recently moved from Solaris Sparc box to linux box and since then we are seeing IO issues. And it's quite obvious in iostat that the io goes as high as 100ms. So I am wondering if someone can advice if there are any mount options we need to give or if we need to use vxodmfs file system. Below are the details of this environment:
    1. It's using veritas volume manager. (Same as solaris)
    2. It's using vxfs file system (Same as solaris)
    3. It's using veritas ODM libraries that helps us in IO. (Same as solaris)
    4. SAN EMC storage (Same as solaris)
    5. Mount options /dev/vx/dsk/orapdata1dg/oradata1vol1 on /u01/oradata type vxfs (rw,delaylog,largefiles,ioerror=mwdisable)

That should work. I'd make sure you have the right version of VxVM as mentioned in the Traffic Manager install/config guid.
It could be a bunch of things but if you nstalled VxVM, then installed Traffic Manager, and the devices weren't found......that's a symptom of the wrong VxVM version.
The install/config guide has the required versions.

  • Firewire and gnome-volume-manager

I have a firewire scanner, when hotplugged, nothing happens in gnome. I have 'run when scanner is plugged' checked, but I get nothing.
Does gnome-volume-manager work with firewire devices? or is it just my scanner? (Canon 2540 photo)

I don't know about scanners, but my firefire external HD is recognised perfectly by gnome-volume-manager. So it does listen for firewire devices. Maybe you'll need to add something to udev to make gnome-volume-manager know it's a scanner?
I have a scsi scanner, so I won't try hotplugging it

  • User for ADVM and ACFS Volume management

Hi I am getting confused which user to use for ADVM and ACFS management.
I want to create a new volume and ACFS.
My normal grid and db admin user is "oracle" in the group 'oinstall". For the ACFS setup, I have granted the oracle user with root privileges.
No I want to create a new volume in ADVM using "ASMCMD". No matter whether I create the volume with the root user, or the oracle user., the volume is assigned to the following user:
    [root@grid1 asm]# ll /dev/asm/
    total 0
    brwxrwx---. 1 root oinstall 251, 194561 Mar 24 10:15 volume1-380
    Is this correct?
Because when I do (as the oracle user):
    sudo /sbin/acfsutil registry -a /dev/asm/volume1-380 /srv/u01/app/acfsmounts/myacfs
    The privileges are:
    [oracle@grid1 app]$ ll
    total 16
    d---------.  3 root   root     4096 Mar 24 10:51 acfsmounts
    [root@grid1 acfsmounts]# ll
    total 4
    drwxr-xr-x. 4 root root 4096 Mar 24 10:32 myacfs
Now the condition is as follow:
    As oracle user:
no access at all on both nodes:
    [oracle@grid1 acfsmounts]$ ls
ls: cannot open directory .: Permission denied
    [oracle@grid2 acfsmounts]$ ls
ls: cannot open directory .: Permission denied
    As root user:
On node1, I can do everything:
    [root@grid1 myacfs]# echo "dadwad" > dawdawd.txt
    --> SUCCESS
But on node2, I cant create a file:
    [root@grid2 myacfs]# cat dawdawd.txt
    --> SUCCESS
    [root@grid2 myacfs]# echo "dawd" > newfile
    -bash: newfile: Permission denied

Please refer "Basic Steps to Manage Oracle ACFS Systems"

    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e18951/asmfs_util001.htm#OSTMG94787
I believe you can succeed by following the steps described in the documentation, so if you get any issue just post here.

  • New to Spiceworks and I have a simple question

So yes I am new to spice works and maybe this is a stupid question but here it is. Spicerworksis installed and users are able to login and create tickets. We have AD intergration. But am I able to create a ticket for a user that has never used Spiceworks before. I was hoping that If I had to create a ticket for a user i could and Spiceworks would connect to the AD user. But instead if they never used Spiceworks it doesn't see them or allow me to enter their name. If any one could please tell what I'm doing wrong and how I can correct it.
    Thanks

  • Truecrypt and LUKS volume manager

UPDATE: Now the crypt manager is called 'startcrypt' and supports both LUKS and truecrypt.
    Hi.
I have started using truecrypt for encrypting partition with all my private files,
like mozilla passwords, mail messages, IM history etc. - all files I wouldn't like to
be read if my laptop is lost. In my home directory I have symlinks to those secret files/directories
placed on a separate partition. Of course it is possible to encrypt whole /home/ partition, but I didn't
want to do that. Anyway, it was necessary to enter password for that partition,
and mount it before I log into my user, so before kdm starts.
So I created script for doing that. It is based on network profile selector dialog. It uses
files describing encrypted partitions placed in /etc/crypt-profiles/ - similar to /etc/network-profiles/.
I can specify the device, mount point and some optional truecrypt options. Then I put
/etc/rc.d/crypt somewhere in DAEMONS in rc.conf - so it is executed before kdm.
That ways I get a dialog-based menu, where I can choose partitions I want to mount from all available
profiles, and enter their passwords. If there is only one profile, there is only a password dialog.
Of course it is not necessary to enter passwords for all of the profiles. The dialog can be discarded.
The script also unloads those partitions during system reboot. It is possible to use hidden partition
(by entering different password), but it is not currently possible to use normal partition in 'hidden
    partition safe' mode.
    Here are some screenshots:
    And here is AUR package:
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?K=startcrypt
You can also see how the profile file looks like:
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/start … t/template
Tell me what you think about that!

I have modified the script to support both truecrypt and LUKS.
It is now renamed to 'startcrypt' and is here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?K=startcrypt
(truecrypt package is still present, for now at least)

  • Safe volume limit- simple question

What's the safe volume limit to set my ipod nano 4GB to, when adjusting the sound at the song display screen to 100%?
My earphones are canalphones (in-ear) Sennheiser CX300, if that matters. And I'm using a Bass Booster equilizer (I like to hear the bass go THUD in my ears, and would hate to hear it could damage my hearing).
My current volume limit is set to 50% (7 bars out of 14 at the volume limit set screen).
    Comments appreciated

  • Configuring Call Pickup and Busy Lamp Field - SIMPLE QUESTION UNANSWERED

In configuring BLF do I need to declare a station name ? The name should be only one at the entire network or could double if the ext/ usr is different ?
    c. Enter the following string in the Extended Function field:
    fnc=blf+cp;sub=Stephanie@$PROXY;ext=300@$PROXY
    Using the following syntax:
    fnc=type;sub=stationname@$PROXY;ext=extension#@$PROXY
    where:
    - fnc: function
    - blf: busy lamp field
    - cp: call pickup
    - sub: station name
    - ext or usr: extension or user (the usr and ext keywords are
    interchangeable)
    Thanks in advance !
    Regards

    Hi Jerry,
    The second button option is the only way I can see this working because the BLF feature is only meant to monitor Busy/Idle Directed call park slots and does not have the access prefix assigned. For example;
User A has a directed call park slot 88 assigned to him/her as a button on the BLF.So when they use this feature they are really speed dialling 88.
When someone wants to retrieve this call that was parked by User A they must dial the directed call park prefix that you set up (example 21) plus 88 (2188).
When User A tries to retrieve the call by pressing the same button they originally used they are really dialling 88 again and thus get the"call park slot unavailable" message.
You would need to setup a second button with the 2188 prefix+park slot for this to work properly.
    Here is an excerpt from the documentation;
"User cannot retrieve parked calls. After dialing the directed call park number to retrieve a parked call, the user receives a busy tone, and the IP phone displays the message, Park Slot Unavailable.
Ensure that the user dials the retrieval prefix followed by the directed call park number."
    Hope this helps!
    Rob

  • SUN Fire V440 + StroEdge 3310 Volume manager!

    1. it is not possible to run disk management commands, the output is like:

But i think the local disks for the SUN server is managed by Disksuite
the out put of /etc/vfstab is:

#to mount to fsck point type pass at boot options

The commands 'vsdisk' and 'vxprint' are installed with Veritas Volume Manager, if you have not bought and installed that application you do not have those commands.
Solaris Volume Manager and Veritas Volume Manager are not the same. SVM is embedded with Solaris, VxVM isn't.

  • Volume Manager RAID-1 maintance procedures for X2100

    Hi all,
we are using the new Sun Fire X2100 with Solaris 10 and a Volume Manager RAID-1 configuration.
Configuring Mirroring with Volume Manager isn't complicated at all (apart from some tricks necessary on x86 systems).
Does anybody know how to properly handle maintenance situations. We would like to replace a faulty disk without a need for restarting the system, switching it off or changing to single user mode. Cause the X2100's two drives are hot swappable, in principle, this should be possible, isn't it?
    Thanks in advance

  • Suggestion for dbus, hal. new gnome-volume-manager-version.

    Heya,
I just installed dbus, hall from cvs and gnome-volume-manager from tarball and have some suggestions:
    dbus:
the default during configure seems to be to detect if you have the necessary things installed and based on that enable a component.
    To disbale qt-bindings add:
    --disable-qt
to configure, else it will try to compile the qt-bindings and without a libGL.la it won't work ... (and this isn't in the Mesa package or wasn't anyway as far as I can tell).
    hal:
could you add the option "--enable-fstab-sync" to configure in the new versions? It seems to be usefull . It can be it wasn't available earlier ...
    gnome-volume-manager:
I just upgraded to 0.9.9 If anyone wants to have the binary just tell me where to upload.

there are solutions on this forum to fix the libGL.la. this file will be included with future builds of xorg/xfree86. NVIDIA drivers should also provide this file. this file is only an issue for building.
file a bug report feature report to add this build option to the package

if this package is in one of the three official repos file a feature request.

if a package has just fallen out of date up to about two week leave time for the maintainer to upgrade it .  you can flage the package out of date via the web page. this is way better than offering it to people or uploading it somewhere.
the flag otu of date feature is always a better option to cluttering the list with update requests and the bug tracker is the best way to convey your wanted build changes. alot of the developers do not frequent this forum but all are member of the bug tracker notification system.
