  • Removing Unused Files

There are about 250 files listed in my Unused Files report.
    1. Will removing them reduce the size of my output folders?
    2. Must I delete them one at a time from the Project Manager, or is there a faster way?
    - Shawn

They can only be removed through Windows Explorer as the fact that they are unused files means they are not in Project Manager.

  • Is there a software which can remove unused files leftover from removed applications?

Hi there guys, as the title says... Does anyone know of anything, or anyway that I can do this easily? I notice that I do have files left here and there from software which I have long since removed... Any easy way to remove these files..?

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • Automatically removing unused files in a project

    Hey Guys
Just a quick one... in Cubase there was a menu that let me get rid of any audio files that weren't used in a project.
So once we had settled on the takes we wanted to use, etc, we could get rid of any audio file that wasn't used in the arrangement, to clear out space on the hard drive.
Is there a way to do this in Logic? It seems not, but I might be missing something...
    Cheers
    Mike

I've stated it elsewhere and got flamed for it, but I'll gladly re-iterate it for you:
Stop filling the planet with gazillions of alternate versions of your song. At least until you have the version of the song (from then on you're free to do what you like).
If any of your ideas (or mine, for that matter) is so unbelievably brilliant that you can't risk losing it, then you'll notice it right away. No need to compulsively store and archive every farl any accumulation of cells on this stone's surface has ever emitted. Know what ? You don't even have the time to listen to every version you ever piled up in your project folder. Or put differently, if you manage to find the time, you could create something new and better instead.
Make up your mind. Do you like it ? Keep it. Don't you ? Then erase it and record something else. But get the thing finished.
    Love
    Christian
PS: Oh, and yes, erasing files from your final version will wreak havoc on your not-final versions. That's why they are not-final versions. They weren't good anyway. Scrap them.

  • Removing unused items / optimizing file size

I have a large swf that is embedded in Director as a sprite.  I now want to put it onto a web page, so file size is critical.  Is there a way to remove unused library items when publishing so that file size is reduced?  Is there another way to compress the swf so it is much smaller?  The current size is about 25 Mb.  What about streaming the swf?  I'm not talking about streaming video or audio, just any Flash content.  Any tricks for speeding the process up so that the user doesn't have a long wait before the swf starts?
In Director, there is a way to right-click on a cast member and choose "find in score".  If something isn't found it means that it either is not used in the movie or is implemented through code.  Is there a similar way in Flash of detecting unused items or automatically eliminating them when publishing?
    Thanks,
    Brian

all used assets would have to be downloaded eventually but it's a much nicer user experience to promptly see something useful on-stage, sooner rather than later.  background sound, for example, need not be downloaded when a page first loads and should download after items more useful to the user have already downloaded.
under file/publish settings/flash/tick generate size report you can see what's bloating your swf.

  • Removing unused media files?

I tend to move slides between presentations often, and as a result I have multiple copies of media files (movies, photos, etc.) all in the presentation package. Often, if a slide is deleted, the media contained on that slide is still present in the package. Does anyone know of an easy way to remove unused media files? I'm doing this to help keep the file size down, as it's getting seriously unwieldy. Thanks

Not that I know of...I miss one option that some graphic programs have... collect on output. It will collect all linked files and place them in the same folder of you finial file. I wish a lot of programs had this function. Would save time hunting down associated files that you can't remember where you put them...
    I know this doesn't help you...sorry.

Ah, ok. I was in the assumption the PCI connect had something to do with the video connection. But it seems like Apple wanted to reinvented PCIe...
I'm out of my territory here so feel free to ignore the following.
These are the things I notice in your Xorg.0.log:

What the hell is modesetting doing there?

  • Cleanup - Removing unused image files?

I have used some image files as templates in my animation. There doesn't seem to be a way to remove the files without Edge squaking about those files missing. Even after I have removed all references to those files. What is the proper way to remove unwanted files completely from a Edge animate project? It was suggested that there is a right click, but this only shows you where the file is in the finder.
"File saved but Edge Animate encountered error(s): Failed to Copy Image: /Users/danjahson/Rain/Clients Work Folder/Nu Skin/Bespoke Moblie App/Intro & Reveal HTML Video/Bespoke_Intro/Bespoke_Intro_1/images/Intro_Template0012.jpg: No such file or directory"
This file is no longer in the animation - but it still asks for it. I cant seem to kill it.
I am on a mac with the latest version of Edge Animate (3.0.0.322.27519).
    Any suggestions,

The reason it is complaining is because your probably have a symbol that contains these images in the symbol library. Delete the obsolete symbols and the error will go away.

  • Trim Whitespace.vi - remove unused polymorphic VI instances

    Hello All
From some time while building the exe file I have started to receive the error:
    Error 1073 occurred at E:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\vi.lib\Utility\error.llb\Trim Whitespace.vi
    Possible reason(s):
Application Builder: Unable to disconnect type definitions and remove unused polymorphic VI instances for this application. Deselect this option on the Application Settings tab and build the application again.
It did not happen before. Of course I can leave all polymorphic vis in my application, but why I started to get this error? It never happened before. Especially that the Trim Whitespace.vi is not a polymirfic vi.
    Any ideas?
    thanks in advance.
    Pawel

    Hi Mohadjer
Demn.... I remember now. I started to get this error when I saved my vi (for other purposes) with removed diagrams. Probably it removed it also from the vi.lib vis. Wow.... Now I am having problems, how many vis I have destroyed when this happened.
Anyways, thanks a lot for this. At least I know what I have done .
    regards
    Pawel

  • Remove Preview Files & Consolidation

At one point in a project, I cleared all renders and deleted some unused sequences. Now when I open that project I am asked where the rendered preview files are. I click 'Skip previews' and move on. Is there a way to have CS3 stop asking for the old previews?
Also, how do the 'Remove unused' and 'Consolidate' (I kknow that's an Avid term but I forgot the PP designation) functions work? Do they physically remove files from drives or just the project?

I tried 'Offline' but it produces an error message stating 'not a valid file'.

  • Reducing Project Size, Removing unused media

I just finished a project and now I'd like to reduce the size to free up some hard drive space. I'd like to keep the captured media files that were actually used in case there are any changes from the client, but delete the ones that were not. Is there an easy way to do this? Anyone have any good strategies when a project is finished.
Everything was captured using Log and capture, so I could reimport if necessary, but I had 20hrs of footage and only used 30minutes, so there's definitely some that wasn't touched.
    Thanks,
    Duane

It is safe to use the media manager...
Check your hard drive for space...for 30 mins means you'll need at least another 6.5 GB of free space... make it 8GB to be safe...
In media manager (NOTE : also read the manual carefully) use the COPY option...
Using COPY, ensure the 'duplicate selected items and place into a new project' box IS ticked, this will set up a completely new project and folder, containing ONLY EVERYTHING you have in your 30 min sequence... and will not delete or change anything from the origonal... If you go to the new folder you'll see another folder called 'media'... this will contain all the clips etc.
Then, open up the new COPIED project, watch it to check it's ok... if it's cool (which it should be) then you now have a completely independant project that is nothing to do with the origonal... and contains only used media.
Then, open up final cut pro docs>capture scratch> 'project name' and you can simply delete ALL your old media manually, knowing that everything you need is now in a new folder elsewhere....
Of course, this only works if you have that little bit of extra space left on your drive for the new media to be copied to... but i find it's the safest, and easiest way of removing unused media.

  • What's the best way to removed unwanted files?

I have an iMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11 with 1GB of DDR SDRAM. I'm wondering what's the best way to remove unwanted files from the RAM, if it's even possible. There are apps and other files I no longer need. If I can dump the unused files will it help the computer run a little faster? Can I eliminate the unwanted files some how by myself or do I need a program that does it? Thanks

Applications are stored perminately on the harddrive [ Macintosh HD ]. When applications are running that is when they appear in a window, they take up RAM. You see your running applications by using activity monitor:
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
Application when they are not running, they do not take up RAM.  You will not see any performance improvement when you delete an application from your Harddrive.  [ unless you have filled up your harddrive ]
Best to have greater than 2gig of free space on your Harddrive.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.
Most applications do not take up much space on the Harddrive.  I copy my unused application to a folder named additional applications.

Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

Monolingual is a program for removing unnecessary language resources from Mac OS X,in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). It worked for me on 10.4
