Swap a laptop hard drive with another laptop hard drive?

Can I swap a toshiba 17" laptop hard drive with a toshiba 15" laptop hard drive?

Laptop hard drives have been standardized in recent years. So they will fit and are electrically compatible.
What's on them is another matter. Windows is configured differently for each computer. So don't expect to boot existing software on another computer.
For more, give us the models. There is a label on the bottom.

  • Swapping out G5 tower parts with another G5 tower?

    I have a 2.0 Ghz Dual PowerPC G5 (3.0), 512 KB (L2), 4GB Ram with a 1Ghz bus (June 2004 model).
    Serial # G8438CKYQPR
Is it possible to swap out the ram, video card and hard drive and put it into a 2.0/2.5Ghz Quad PowerPC G5 (Early - Late 2005 Models)?
Want to know if they are compatible before I have this attempted?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    BboyTV

    Hi,
The Quad G5 is out, as well as the other Dual Core G5s, they use 533 MHz PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM, where the 2004s use 400 MHz PC3200 DDR SDRAM, & PCIe Video card instead of AGP video card on the 2004s.
The early 2005 Models should work, this is he fastest one...

  • Is my iPad 3g locked to ATT or can I swap out the micro sim with another GSM carriers micro sim?

I travel with my iPad to Europe frequently and would like to know if I can swap sims with a local carrier and use their data plane while overseas.

The iPad is not sold as carrier locked - except for the Verizon iPad which doesn't have a SIM card anyway.

  • My laptop hard drive crashed - when I go to sync my iPhone it says that my phone is already synced with another computer and can only be synced with one computer at a time.

My Dell laptop hard drive crashed - when I go to sync my iPhone it says that my phone is already synced with another computer and can only be synced with one computer at a time. When I hit sync is says it will erase my phone and sync with the new computer which is blank. How do I get my phone to sync my contacts, pics, apps etc. over to my new hard drive without losing anything.

Yes, so what's confusing... Did you not restore the backup of your data, contacts, pics, apps, music, etc. to the new hard drive after you replaced it or reformatted it or whatever you did? If so, then you can just sync your data back.
If not, please try searching the forum. This has been addressed hundreds of times here.

  • Want to swap internal 120GB hard drive with 500GB but retain Aperture Lib

I am still on Aperture 2 but want to upgrade to Aperture 3. Current Aperture lib has grown to over 40GB. My laptop is starting to get generally slower and I feel that I have a lot of HDD fragmentation that I have not resolved yet. My internal HDD is 120GB with only 19GB now available. I do a monthly backup to an external 500GB drive using Time Machine. No other backups performed nor do I do any Aperture backup including vaulting. My laptop is roughly 3 years old.
I have not used any kind of defrag software. I have been reading about iDefrag which gets a lot of praise. But my understanding is that to use it, you need to have a lot of disk free space to copy files to temporarily. Below is what I plan to do and I am asking for opinions as to whether it is practical.
1.) Purchase another 500GB portable external drive.
2.) Divide new drive in 2 partitions; bootable 300GB and 165GB (remainder is used in formatting).
3.) Copy my entire internal 120GB hard drive to bootable 300GB partition as a full system backup.
    4.) Start Aperture.
5.) Vault my entire Aperture 2 library to non-bootable 165GB partition.
    6.) Stop Aperture.
7.) Have Apple technician swap out internal 120GB drive and replace it with a new 500GB drive.
(Data will not be copied from old drive to new drive by Apple tech.).
8.) Boot the reconfigured laptop from the 300GB external drive.
Q1.) Is it possible to boot from an external drive with no data on the internal drive?
9.) If yes, copy the 300GB drive to the new internal 500GB drive. (Maybe format 500GB first?)
Q2.) Will the copy put in place all previous software e.g. Aperture, etc. on new drive.
Q3.) Will I be able to start Aperture and retrieve images without accessing 165GB partition?
Q4.) If I can not access my Aperture library images after the copy, can I restore the library
from the vault operation in step 5?
    10.) Upgrade to Aperture 3.

    Hi metoymi;
Personally I don't like your plan. Even with two partition on a single drive all of your eggs are in a single basket. The most like disk problem is disk failure which will wipe out both partition on the single drive.
I know it is more to carry but I would suggest that you at least consider putting the old drive in a portable shell and using that for your vault instead. At least that way a disk failure is only wipe out half of your data.

  • How do I unlock My Documents folder in the hard-drive with another PC?

I have a 3000 series j100 desktop, 3 days ago restarted on its own and can't boot anymore, no keyboard, no mouse and no monitor signal sent from the pc.
I took the drive out and use it as an external drive to my laptop, but it asks for a password before I can access My Documents folder.
I believe it's the windows xp login password that's needed, but there's no field on that pop-up box to enter any password it asks.
I know my windows login password, but I don't know if that's what really needed and how to use it to unlock the folder.
Is there another way to access the folder, or do I need to get the computer working again to access the folder in the drive?
I also do have some encrypted files inside My Documents folder that I created with windows when the pc was working.
The encryption comes along with windows xp. When you right-click a file, you choose properties and advance option then apply the encryption, then the file name turns color to green.
Could it be the reason I can't access My Documents folder in the drive with another pc?
Please help, I need to know if I need to do a recovery job or is there an easy way to access My Documents folder in the drive with another computer.

  • Corrupt hard-drive, swapped for an older drive from another similar MacBook Pro

My original hard drive is corrupt, I swapped to an older drive which has snow lepoard on it, when installing Yosemite it freezes now i cant boot into the old OS and installer freezes extracting.
Disk utility says the disk is fine, with no issues.
The original disk failed and would not boot, disk utility says it was corrupt. I have another MacBook pro so i swapped the HD's, it is 320GB compared to the 500GB (failed drive).
It was working fine on Snow Leopard but when I ran the upgrade in the App Store, it freezes everytime at the same point in the install ( extracting the same .pkg file).
    Any ideas?

You apparently have a MBP that came with an OSX newer than Snow Leopard.  If that is the case, the Snow Leopard HDD will not boot in the newer MBP.  If you erase that HDD and install the OSX that came with your MBP (or a newer one), then it will be compatible.
    Ciao.

I don't see anything in Help that shows when you already have transfered all the files over.  Why would it want to erase and sync when I already have all the music folder copied over?  I didn't have an issue when I had another technician copy from one laptop to another.  Home sharing is also on but not being recognized.

I suspect you only migrated the media folder instead of the complete working library. Either review the transfer process and copy over the entire iTunes folder from your old profile's music folder or see Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

I'm trying to sync my old ipad to itues on my laptop but it keeps saying ipad synced with another iTunes library what can I do I don't want to lose these photos?

You can only sync an ipad to one computer at a time.
You can look to something like dropbox, upload your photos there, then do the sync and since your photos are backed up it won't hurt if they are deleted.

I had to replace my hard drive and now when I plug in my iPad, itunes says it is synced with another library

That is because the iPad can only "sync" to one iTunes library at a time. You can move all of the iPad contents into a new iTunes library. This discussion will give you a lot of useful information.

This one is Mac specific - not that it is any different except for the iTunes menu.

Remember to authorize the computer in iTunes first - From the iTunes menu go to Store>Authorize this computer.

    i buy the new imac,late 2012 with a hard-drive 3TB and i want to change with another hard-drive 1TB....where i can buy?

It's also much more difficult to install third-party hard drives in current or recent Macs than it was. See:
    http://blog.macsales.com/10146-apple-further-restricts-upgrade-options-on-new-im acs
The 2012 iMacs are also in essence glued together and very difficult to disassemble and reassemble. The bottom line is: don't try it.
Why, if I may ask, would you want to remove the 3TB drive and replace it with a 1TB drive? What is it you hope to achieve even if it were possible?
    Regards.
