Swap Batteries Without Shutting Down

This is a feature on the the 15 and 17 inch powerbooks, but I haven't seen anything anywhere talking about it for the MacBook. Also seeing as how I don't quite have the funds to spring for my own at the time, could one of you unimaginably lucky folks who have already gotten theirs, try this little thing:
Make sure there are no important documents that you could lose.
Unplug the MacBook from the power adapter.
Put the computer to sleep by just closing the lid.
Pop out the battery completely out, wait about 10 seconds and then pop it back in.
Does it kill the computer? Or does the MacBook just keep right on sleeping, not harming a single open document?
-Scott

No, that’s not quite all there is to it. RAM is the largest problem, since when RAM loses all power; it also loses all data stored in it. Because of this, for a laptop to be able to have its battery replaced, without losing any of its contents while not being connected to an AC adapter, a capacitor (essentially a small rechargeable battery) must be present in the system.
Apple's support page at the following web address also states this. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58445
The capacitor is something that must be present from the beginning in order to retain power for the RAM, and that is certainly not something that can be replaced with a software patch.
However, there has been speculation that the MacBook Pro actually makes a copy of all of the RAM to the hard drive, which would allow the RAM to lose power, and would also explain the additional time needed to restore the system. I am however curious just how long it takes for that copy to occur, for it seems like even on larger, faster disk drives, a two gigabyte file would take around 20-30 seconds to copy, and that is a rather long time to wait for the MacBook to "fall" asleep.
My original question has been answered though, and I will possibly get to play with another MacBook this week, and that will certainly be something I look at a little more closely.

Due to Apple firmware limitations in the 2G iPod Touch, it is not possible to shut down the Touch screen and keep the accelerometer running, so running the Sleep Cycle application on the iPod Touch causes the screen to stay on all night and become very warm
Apple please please could you change the Touch firmware to support shutting off the screen without shutting down the accelerometer so that Sleep Cycle can be run on the Touch like it now runs on the 3G and 3GS iPhone.
This would open this excellent little application to the whole Touch market segment, making the developers very happy and allowing me to get up in the morning.

    All,
Can we put RAC database in Archivelog mode without shutting down.
Currently our new production database (2 node RAC) is in no archive log mode, Need to enable archive log in the database...
I believe we need to set the cluster_database=false and then put the DB in archive log mode then we need to bounce the database to take effect...
Just curious to know in 11gR2 ...Can we put the RAC database in archive log mode without any downtime ...?

Even RAC or non-RAC, database should bounced and enable/disable archive log mode from mount status.

  • Is it possible to take a full backup without shutting down an instance?(10g

    Hi. everyone.
Is it possible to take a full backup without shutting down an instance?
    The db version is 10gr2.
As far as I know, in order to take a full backup of a database,
one need to shutdown a database.
Our db environment is a RAC environment which has two nodes.
Yesterday, I heard from a hardware vendor that we do not need to shutdown
instances(2-nodes) in order to take a full backup.
    Best Regards.

    Hi,
    >>As far as I know, in order to take a full backup of a database, one need to shutdown a database.
In fact, a database operating in NOARCHIVELOG mode is necessary to shutdown the database in order to perform a full backup (Cold Backup), but otherwise a database that is operating in ARCHIVELOG mode, then is possible to perform a full database backup with the database in a open state. (Hot Backup)

  • SAP System copy without shutting down the source and the target system

    Hi,
We need to need to System refresh without shutting down both the source and the target system, i read the docs from SAP looks like we need to shutdown the source system during export and import phase, is there any way to do the system refresh without shutting down the system.
    Sathish

    Hi,
Think a little bit about what is a database and you'll get the answer that what you "need to need" is impossible.
Of course it is possible to keep the source running (hopefully, because ususally it is the production system !) by using an online backup, but you need to stop the target system because you will restore a backup on it.
If you use the export/import way, you have to stop both source and target system.

  • Is it possible to kill a (last) task without shut down the hole App?

Is it possible to kill a (last) task without shut down the hole App?
For example you wanna open/import something in Adobe AE and the finderdialog hangs.
You dont have any chance to save your work before quit the app.
May it could be a code in Terminal or something like else.
So, is it possible to whrite it down for me please?
    thx frank

You can kill any individual process by using Activity Monitor, selecting the process, and using the Kill Process command. The location and precise phrasing of the command will vary by version of OS X; in Mavericks it's the "x" button at the upper-left corner of the screen.
If it's some part of the application that has hung, though, it's highly probable that killing a process associated with the application will bring down the entire program. In such as case there's almost never any option. In the case of the application hanging in the file open/save dialog, then I don't believe that there will be any way you can recover without forcing the entire application to quit.
    Regards.

  • My I phone 3gs shuts down suddenlly but when i removed the sim it is working without shutting down suddenlly again when you insert the sim it started shutting down suddenlly

My I phone 3gs shuts down suddelly but when I removed sim card it started working without sudden shut downs, again when I insert sim card it started shutting down suddenlly.

I have Satellite A300 and until now everything works OK.
I would like to know what happen when you remove the battery and use notebook with power supply only. Does notebook shuts down again.
If not let OS run and put the battery.
Is the battery recognized properly? Does notebook switch off again?
To be honest I cannot imagine this issue has something with software or background processes. Recovery image you got with your notebook is designed for this certain notebook mode. Recovery image is tested and I dont think preinstalled OS has anything to do with this.
    Full diagnosis?
And how to do this? You know very well that diagnosis can be done with diagnostic tools only and such tools have services only. I hope you will find answers but Im 99% sure there is nothing you can do about that. Maybe you should contact service, explain the situation and ask for help.

  • Changing archive log mode without shutting down database

    Hi all,
Is there any way to set the database to archive log mode before shutting down the database and when the database shuts and starts, the database should be automatically in archive log mode?
because we can not shutdown the database in weekdays and we have system reboot on weekend and we are not here on that day. So is there a way to set the database in archive log at the memory level so that when the database reboots, it should automatically start in archive log mode.
my environment is windows server 2008 R2 with oracle 11.2.0.3
    Thanks in advance.

thank you for the reply Max Seleznev,
First I thought of writing script in order to include in that process. But we can not run any commands in the sqlplus using the windows jobs. for eg:
you can write a batch file as below:
    cd \
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    select name,open_mode from v$database;
when you run this, it will open until sqlplus prompt but then will not execute the query.
What did you expect? Well, actually, I know what you expected. But think about it for a second. You have a batch file with the mentioned three lines. How does that batch file get processed .. what is happening when it is being processed?
It is not being processed by sqlplus, it is being processed by the windows command processor. Just like the cmd.exe. Each line is read by the command processor and executed accordingly. So ....
cd \the command processor calls 'cd' , and passes the value '\' to do with as it sees fit. 'cd' then changes the current directory of the session to whatever is indicated by the passed parameter. in this case, that value is '\' , so the resulting current directory is the base (root, in *nix terms) of the current drive.  When 'cd' has finished, it returns control to the command processor, who then reads the next line ....
sqlplus / as sysdbathe command processor calls sqlplus.exe and passes it the command line parms '/ as sysdba' to do with as it (sqlplus) sees fit. sqlplus does whatever it does with what it has been given In this case it tries to connect to whatever local database is indicated by the value of ORACLE_SID, then waits for more input. Whenever sqlplus exits (how does it know to exit?) it returns control to the command processor, who then reads the next line ....
select name,open_mode from v$database; The command processor will read this line and attempt to find an executable file named 'select' and pass it the rest of the command line 'name,open_mode from v$database;'
Hmm, what do you suppose will happen with that operation?
that is the reason I am figuring out whether there is an alternate way.yes but you have to use the proper technique. And since you are building this into a production stop/start without testing the actual stop/start commands ... what do you suppose will be the outcome if something goes wrong?
After hours and weekend work is one reason DBA's make more money than developers.

  • Add logfile group without shutting down first? (10g R2)

Can I add a logfile group without first shutting down the instance? I don't see any clear statement about this in my Alapati 10g Admin book or any Oracle 10g R2 docs. Citations appreciated. Maybe this is one of those "too obvious to publish" things. My guess is that Oracle 10g R2 is smart enough to know not to write to new logfile group members until it is fully created and available for use.
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Is the presumption that any "ALTER DATABASE" operation can be done online in 10g? Not Any, but Some, Yes.
For instance, the ALTER DATABASE ARCHIVELOG statement cannot be done online ( the Database should be mount ).
However about the ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE statement, as previously posted, it can be done online. I've already done it on a running Production Database.
Just be careful to set the same SIZE as for the other Logfile Members.
    Hope this help.

  • Can't open Elements 8 more than once without shutting down the computer

After starting up my computer, I can open Elements 8 (organizer and/or editor) and work as usual.  However, if I close the program, then check email or work on something else, and then I decide to open Elements again, I get the opening screen, click Organizer, and it just disappears.  When I shut down the computer, it says there are programs waiting to close, but it shuts down quickly despite that.  Once I have restarted, all is normal again, until I decide to open Elements twice.
    I have Windows 7 professional.
Do I need to reinstall Elements 8?
    Cam

It sounds like the Organizer and Editor aren't closing all the way, which makes it so you can't re-open them.
To know for sure if this is the case, after you close either program, open Task Manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC), go the Processes tab, click the option at the bottom to show processes from all users, and then scan the list for PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe and/or PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe.
If there, then that means they aren't getting closed.
As a temporary workaround until you find out why they won't close, you can end the process in Task Manager instead of rebooting the computer.
As for the cause, it is possible that something else you have running in the background, perhaps security software, is causing the issue. To determine if that's the case, restart the computer without any startup items or non-essential services, and then run Elements 8. Here are some instructions:
    Windows 7/Vista: http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_kb404913_en-us
    Windows XP: http://go.adobe.com/kb/ts_kb404984_en-us
If you can close and re-open the Editor/Organizer properly without anything else running, then something was preventing the program from closing properly. Use a process of elimination to determine what; something similar to this method:
    Open the System Configuration utility.
Re-enable approximately half of the items that were disabled.
Click OK, and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Check if you can close and re-open the Editor/Organizer.
If you can't anymore, open the System Configuration utility and disable half of the most recently enabled items.
If you can still, open the System Configuration utility and re-enable half of the remaining items.
Go back to Step 3, and continue dividing the items into halves until  you have determined which startup item or service is causing the issue.
Once you have isolated the problematic startup item or service,  contact its manufacturer for an update or configuration information, or  leave it disabled.

  • Why freezing (mini 2011) and how to get out from there without shutting down?

Still difficult to know why/what action/what behaviour, but why am I getting (at least once avery 4-5 hours of use, to be fair...), a hang/freeze (that kaleidoscope ball...) - sometimes with nothing special (it just happened as I was starting to write this message!...) ?
I hear people who are going for years (or at least they claim it) without a single freeze or crash wth their Mac (reason why I invested in one mini, and soon another one...).
Ok I would get it if I had 5 apps going on with 4GB of ram (still, depends which apps...). I get it with Photo Booth, I get it with Microsoft Office 2011 (a simple plain Word document), I get it surfing on Safari... So nothing very ''specific''.
And sometimes, it is the shut down that freezes.... I come up hours later or the day after and realize it had not completed shut down (still that rolling wheel on the white background).
I have all OS X (Lion) and other apps updates to date.
So, to which extent is it ''normal'' to get a crash (or is it a crash ? - when I cannot go further and there is no other way but to force shut down physically (Power button)? - And is there another way to get out from there on a Mac ? (Being a Windows user, my automatic reflex would be Ctrl+Alt+Del... when this works...)

  • Does connecting a display to DVI without shutting down really cause an arc?

I just got a Wacom Cintiq 12" and their documentation and tech person says I've got to shut down before plugging or unplugging or beware--making the DVI connection with the computer on (or even asleep) could cause an arc and damage the display. I told them Apple support told me the exact opposite a while back, that I should be plugging and unplugging montors while my Powerbook was awake so the computer properly recognizes it. Wacom tech support says they were surprised to hear Apple actually recommending this since that it's dangerous to all displays.
Anyone know the straight scoop on this? I'd hate to have to restart every time. Thanks!

I don't think there really is a straight scoop. Zillions of people plug and unplug monitors every day with no ill effects. However, there is a slight possibility of a problem, which is probably why Wacom specifically warns not to do this. FWIW, my display is a Viewsonic and it, too, specifically warns to have both off before connecting, then specifically to power the display on first, then the computer (to recognize the display).
I think the manufacturers have covered themselves by stating this, so I suggest if you want warranty coverage, you should follow this. Do I do this every time? No!
