Here's the situation. I've had a 3G iPhone for a while. It has quite a lot of apps, data, music etc on it. In March I got my wife a 3GS iPhone but she is not bothered about the latest functionality eg video etc so she is happy to swap phones. How do we simply swap all the contents - eg apps, data, music etc - between 2 phones? Then swap sim cards so we keep our own numbers and apps etc and just switch the physical phone? Can it be done? ie I get her phone but with all my apps and data and vice versa?

Well, this just may work in your favor then...
The iphone, by design, will sync itunes content with ONE computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer.
Since you want to swap phones & content, do this:
Disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected under preferences in itunes for each computer. In windows, this is under the edit menu.
Connect your current phones to the computers they normally sync with & back them up. You can do that by syncing(first thing done when you sync is a backup) or right clicking in the device pane & selecting backup.
Once complete, swap sims, connect each phone to the computer you want to sync with & right click in the device pane & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
This MUST be followed by a sync to restore itunes content to each phone.
When done, all you should have to add to each phone are passwords for email & wifi(they are not restored for security reasons) & you should have effectively swapped phones & data.

You cannot merge two separate libraries across user accounts. Photos does not have the function of merging different Photos.library files. If you have Aperture then you can merge the two before migrating over to Photos.

ITunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone (repetitive)

I've been syncing my iPhone 4 on my computer without issue since launch.
Yesterday I plug it in an get:
"iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone"
The only option is to restore. After trying a number of things, different USB ports, removing other USB devices, restarting the PC and Phone I finally give up and restore the phone. A pain since I loose all my folders and page layouts, not to mention the time to sync all the music and apps over, but fine, it's back up and running and everything syncs.
Then I plug it in again today and the same error:
"iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone"
Only recent change to my system between iTunes working and iTunes suddenly failing to read my phone is updating iTunes to 10.0.1.22.
Any ideas, I'm not excited about the idea of having to restore my phone every time I need to sync with the PC.

I'm having the exact same issues. It all started shortly after iTunes 10.2.1 was released. Since I could not get it to work at all I even sent my phone to be repaired and got a replacement device.
I restored it from a backup and at first everything worked again but after a few days I started getting the same problems again.
To shorten the story: I am now using iTunes 10.2 and iOS 4.3.1, I have even deleted all my backups and reconfigured my iPhone entirely after a reset in the process and still gotten the error message after a few syncs. I have tried deactivating my USB controller and it worked yesterday, today it doesn't.
The strange thing is that it has been working perfectly for 4 months before all that. I've read in some forums now that this problem can be fixed easily on a jailbroken phone by deleting some iTunes library file on the phone but I don't want to lose my warranty and therefore this is not an option.
If it's so easy to fix, why doesn't Apple provide an easy solution?

We share a Macbook Pro (separate accounts) and each have the new iphone, but when I have my iphone and try to create a new playlist, I can only grab songs from one account. Is there a way to create a playlist using both accounts since we are sharing?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer: Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes. With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network. But the data itself is on your computer. If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device. Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your phone. Only if you back up your phone manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in iTunes and transferred your purchases.

I have an iphone 4 (ios 4.3.1). I want to update to the latest ios, but it wouldn't load onto my iphone, I got error message code 3014. I tried again and it said I would lose all the contents on my iphone if I continued - help!

I have an iPhone 4 (IOS 4.3.1) and it was synced and backed up today.
I wanted to upgrade to the latest ios on iTunes (today's date is 3rd Jan 2013), it seemed to download ok (it took about 30 minutes or so), but when it tried to update onto the iPhone (I think this was what it was doing!) I got an error message that had code 3014 in it. Nowhere on Apple's website can I find a way to resolve this error code.
I then thought I would just try again from the beginning, but I then got an error message saying that if I continued I would lose all the contents on my iPhone so I cancelled it as I don't want to lose everything on my phone.
Can anyone help me as I am not very good at technical things and I really want to upgrade the ios on my iPhone without losing all the data I have on there already. An idiots guide would be great.

Errors 3000-3999 (3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443.
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.
Test restoring while connected to a known-good network.

Drag and Drop of cell content between 2 tables

Iam into implementing drag and drop of cell contents between 2 different tables,say Table1 and Table2.(Iam not dragging and dropping rows or cells,Just copying the content of one cell to another).
Have extended the java tutorial class "TableTransferHandler" and "StringTransferHandler" under http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/examples/dnd/index.html#ExtendedDndDemo to satisfy my needs.
The drag is enabled for Table1 and table2 as follows.

I'm having problems with 8.1 and Continuity / Handoff. It will work fine for web pages, etc. but in email when I try to do it between by iPhone 5s running 8.1 and my Macbook Pro running Yosemite I consistently get an error.

"Failed to Continue Activity" Cocoa Error 4609. Handoff is working for phone calls and text messages. By email just crashes each time. It was also doing it under 8.0.2. My iPhone and iPad handle this fine. It's only the MacBook to the iPhone that fails, and only on email.
