Swap Express Card/34 slot for SD Reader

Is there a way to swap the Express Card Slot for an SD card slot, like the current MacBooks have?

Short answer, no. Get a SD ExpressCard Adapter.

  • Express Card 34/slot

I would like to use a mac for mobile wireless access. Just bought a MacBook but having trouble finding any way to do this.
I am considering upgrading to the Mackbook PRO. Can I use it at the office for high speed mobile intenet? There doesn't seem to be a wireless service provider (verizon, cingular etc. )offering a modem for the express card 34/slot yet. Anyone know how long I have to wait before this is a real service?

I am in the UK, does anyone know if there are any items coming to the market to fit this slot ? I really need a compact flash card adaptor for downloading the images from my digital slr, I have moved from a windows machine with the standard PCMCIA slot but cannot locate anything to fit the new express card slot, I have to use a multi-card reader plus all cabling which is not the most compact when travelling.

  • FW400 vs. Express card FW800? For Pro Tools?

Has anyone read anything at all about spec comparisons for sustained throughput on FW800 thru an Express Card? Will it end up being much faster than the stock FW400 connection?
If anyone has seen any articles, etc. I'm more than interested. I'd like to make sure that I don't blow a chunk of $$ on a 400 drive if the 800/Express card will give me more digital tracks of audio. I'll be limited to 48 tracks in Pro Tools anyway either way. Just don't have a lot of experience with the FW drives. Was running 7,200 SATA on the old PC.

    I used to use this:

    With:
    http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10482
On my D*ll laptop (MBP on order now though and i have to say the difference between FW800 and both FW400 and USB2.0 was quite noticeable when rendering video to it (using Premiere Pro 1.5) So i would say that if you can afford it... do it, it'll probably pay for itself quite quickly if you're a professional user.
Or if you want to go hardcore..
    Get this:
    http://news.softpedia.com/news/Vydeo-Announces-Dual-Port-eSATA-ExpressCard-34-Fo r-MacBook-Pro-21050.shtml
    and use it with this:

Should cover you for pretty much everything for a while to come

  • Express Card/34 standard for further expansion.

What uses this new card slot on the Macbooks?
    Will P2 media fit here?

SIIG has created a few cards: an 11-in-1 flash media reader (excludes Compact Flash due to its size), single and dual serial cards, and a dual Firewire 400 card. Only the flash media reader is currently Mac-compatible (it's a USB Mass Storage device that uses the ExpressCard/34's USB 2.0 interface). Mac compatibility is just a matter of the right driver, so it's possible that some of the other cards will be compatible in the future.

  • Express Card Slot on MacBook?

Has anyone heard if Apple plans to have an express card expansion slot on future macbooks like they do on the PRO models. I want an ultra-portable notebook with the ability to accept the new EDVO WAN cards for the 34mm express slot?
    Thanks - Kevin
    PowerBook G4 & imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I would think it were highly unlikely for Apple to include a slot of any kind in the MacBook. Apple reserves such funtionality for their Pro models. While I think the use of the word "never" is a little strong it's probably appropriate.

  • Express Card Driver Not found after upgrade to 10.6.7

I upgraded my macbook pro to version 10.6.7 recently and later found out that the express card 34 slot drive was missing and could not access my Sony SxS cards. After some extensive search I found the site where I could retrieve the driver from. It is listed below. Worked for me! It should work for you also.

the copier has never been used before on this computer, can you tell me how to print with the Konica on mac, which drivers to install, what kind of cables and which procedure.
    Thanks a lot!

  • Extreme vs Express Card/34

Hi. Driving around town to test out Airport Extreme on my MBP, I found several hotspots, including T-Mobile at a Starbucks. I didn't connect as I only wanted to see what's out there.
My question is what purpose does the expansion slot for an Express Card/34 serve, if the Airport Extreme card already picks up secured and unsecured signals? Perhaps it's compatibility? I noticed that I didn't pick up any Verizon, Sprint or Clear Wire signals, but I did get a lot of private signals, including from my 3 neighbors.
    Thank you.

mauimike, Welcome to the discussion area!
An "Express Card/34" is for other peripherals. The name may sound somewhat similar to AirPort Extreme but it has nothing directly to do with the wireless networking capabilities in your MacBook Pro.
Some examples of "Express Card/34" items might be an analog video capture card, SATA hard drive connection, cellular network card, memory card reader, TV tuner card, card to add more FireWire/USB ports, etc.

  • Express Card 34

Does anyone know if an adaptor exists to adapt a Compact Flash card into the Express Card 34 slot on a MBP? If not how about CF to Firewire or USB?

There is an adapter by Delkin Devices called the eFilm express card 34 compact flash adapter. Cost = $60 I haven't ever tried it so I can't comment on how well it works but there is one out there if you want to use the EC 34 slot for CF card reader.
But what I use is a typical Sandisk Compact flash card reader via USB2. It's a lot cheaper and the speeds are fast enough. My CF use is for digital photography. Got mine at Best Buy, I believe. You can also, of course, buy a firewire CF reader for the speed of transfer only, if that is very important to you, but the cost for those is expensive too.
Also, the CF adapter for express card 34, I am pretty sure that it is NOT flush with the mac book pro when inserted, so it will stick out there a ways, so it wouldn't probably be an adapter you'd want to leave installed if you move your laptop around a lot. That was the reason I decided to stick with the USB2 CF reader.
    Hope the info helps.
    Regards.

  • Search express card TV tuner

    Hello,
I search to buy an express card TV tuner for my laptop. It's a Lenovo 3000 N500 4233 47G.
Can anybody give me a good tip ?

Does your laptop have an ExpressCard 54/34 or only an ExpressCard 34 slot?
If your laptop supports both 54 and 34 cards, you can buy an HP Analog TV Tuner. This is what I have for my IdeaPad Y530. It has some lag when TV on the laptop, but from what I'm hearing, a great deal of tv tuners do this.

  • FW Express card

for some reason i can't post in the Mac book pro forum, but wondered if anyone was using or had a recommendation for a Firewire 800 Express card.
I have a WD 800 HD and Saffire pro 26 (fw400). I want to put my drive on a separate bus and get max speed. Anyone know if you actually get the full 800 speed using express card (another user posted a speed test with 56mbs instead of 80mbs when using express card)
    cheers
    JD

FWIW, For maximum HD speed, your best bet is to get an Express Card eSATA controller... and use an eSATA HD.
I'm doing this - note that under Leopard, there are some compatibility issues in the driver for the Sil3132 (the chip inside virtually all the current expresscard eSATA cards), that cause a variety of issues if you have an external HD that has multiple interfaces (ie, USB+eSATA, FW+eSATA etc).
On my WD MyBook drive, the disk hangs after half an hour or so, so I've moved this back to the FW port until these issues get resolved in the next driver version. My other audio drive is Ok on eSATA I think...
It is pleasantly faster than FW....

  • Probook 6545b & Hauappauge HVR-1500 Express card tuner: complete lockups!

    HP Probook 6545b
XP Pro w/sp3, AMD M600 2.4 GHz processor, 2GB memory, 26 processes at startup, less than 300 MB of memory used. Video chipset is a ATI HD 4200. Maximum processor usage on a full HD channel is 70%. usage averages around 60%. Not the greatest, but surely it's not maxing out the system.
Hauppauge HVR-1500 Express card HDTV tuner currently running WinTV V6 (designed for XP). I also tried V7 and Sage TV V6.6 & V7.  BTW, this is the same tuner HP has sold separately before Hauppauge sold it.
Now before anyone goes on about AMD and the 4200, I know neither are the 'fastest' choices. The processor choice was made by design, (Wintel has never been on my shopping list) though I'm very disappointed in the 4200 as I expected better results. Anyway, I don't think it's the video chipset causing the lockup. As far as the Express card choice (I believe there are only two Express cards, this and the AVerMedia Mini), I didn't want one of those USB sticks that hang out 6-8" prone to get pulled out, broken off or just in the way.
The Laptop completely locks up forcing a hard shutdown (holding the Pwr. button four seconds) and power up again, No pattern to it. It could be as little as 60 seconds after the program & tuner is started, or after 60 minutes. (ball park figures)
I tried re-installing the drivers and software, but no real difference. I have the latest drivers from HP, but possible not the latest ATI drivers. One support guy from Hauppauge claims it's the processor. Their specs call for a 2.2GHz or faster processor. This is a 2.4. Windows reports a 1.58GHz processor which brings another question; is this relevant?

    Hi Jessica,
No, the SD slot will not work, you need an ExpressCard/34 slot.
I do not know if it works with cameras, but with two or more HDs, if the first one has two FW ports, you can "daisy chain" one or more additional HDs from it.

  • Workaround for the missing express card slot on the 15"

I was ready to click the buy now button for the new 15 inch and then realized that there is not an express card slot. I know there is one in the 17 inch, but that is out of my price range and try using it while flying coach.
Anyway I edit film and video. I use the express slot for ingestion of P2 data and estata cards, not to mention a Matrox MXO2.
Question: How are users with the 15 inch going to get data input speeds higher than FW400. You can edit HD, but it barks at you.
Since the only port that is open is the ethernet, can someone invent an adapter that will allow the ethernet jack to be the input for devices? I am just asking for speculation. I also assume that the SD card slot can only be used for SD. I would be afraid to have anything other than an SD card sticking out of the MAC.
Anyway, I will try to look for the last generation 15 inch and can get the new 17inch, but since I hook my current 15 inch up to an external monitor and use it for rough editing in the field, I would really love to have a 15 inch that can do what I need.
    Cheers.

What I did was just got a refurbished model. Really the new version is not really upgraded from the last version in any significant manner. They moved the product line around a bit, and changed a connection. As a Mac "Genuis" told me, 1 nice thing about the refurbs is that the unit has been looked over carefully before its sent out. You'll save a few hundred dollars and you can get a 2.66 or even a 2.53 or 2.4 with the express slot and everything else pretty much the same, oops, hmmm except for the 8GB ram, that's actually a big feature. However, many say the 15's will take 6GB though not officially supported by Apple. Anyways, it's a way to get a computer with the express slot and save some money. Just a thought:)

  • SD Card Reader in Express Card slot

I have an iMac with a built in SD card reader and when a card is inserted, it is displayed with a bespoke drive icon showing an image of an SD card. On my MBP I use an SD card reader in the Express Card slot. Is there any way I can make cards inserted in this reader use the same icon as the iMac rather than the generic white External Drive icon?

    Is it this one?
