Swap Files on external HD via Time Machine?

Two weeks ago I bought a new iMac:
Been having some fairly seriously issues with Leopard, but the most perplexing one is a Swap file that was backed up via Time Machine, I'm assuming, as it's on my external HD:
Western Digital
Capacity: 465.64 GB
Available: 356.04 GB
Writable: Yes
File System: Journaled HFS+
BSD Name: disk1s3
Mount Point: /Volumes/My Book
In a folder outside of the Backups.backupdb folder--as viewed from the finder window--is a Private folder, which inside looks like this:
private
tmp
tempVM
vm
swapfile0
The swapfile is 64mb
Any ideas on how this got there? Why it's there? Why my iMac would be swapping with 4GB RAM, and only using 24% of a 320GB HD?
Also it takes forever to open and close apps, restart, 15 to 45 seconds of blue screen before OS starts to load, jerky video, kernel panics, privileges errors, thread crashes, you name it.

I have the same on my Western Digital with my MacBook Pro.
My wife's iMac uses a Seagate and the private folder does not exist.
Thoughts?

  • How to retrieve files on external HDD via Time Capsule?

I have external HDDs connected to Time Capsule but when I access those HDDs, they don't show the files that were stored in them.  However, when I check the "Get Info" on those HDDs, it shows how much capacity is used and how much is available.  How can I retrieve my files on those external HDDs via Time Capsule?  Many thanks for your help!!

    How is the drive formatted?
Does it show up in the airport utility?
TC has very restricted ability to read HFS+ (ie standard Mac format) or Fat32.

  • Retrieve iPhoto files from external drive with Time Machine

I can retrieve all other files with Time Machine (including photos in Pictures) but not my iPhoto pics. Have read a few suggestions but having trouble following.
    Thanks in anticipation, Ernest.

If you are trying to restore individual photos saved in iPhoto, you cannot do that. Instead, you need to restore the whole iPhoto library.
To prevent the lose of the most recent photos, go to the folder where you have got your iPhoto library (by default, Pictures) and copy it to another folder. Then, in that folder, open the Time Machine app (in /Applications/Utilities), navigate through your backups and restore the iPhoto library you need

  • External drive for iTunes library and backing up via time machine

Hi, I currently have an 320gb external drive plugged into usb port of my imac for time machine back up, but my itunes library is 500gb and currently excluded from time machine back up, I would like to buy a 2 or 3tb external drive and then move my itunes library to that to free space on my imac.
I'd really like to know the best way to set up and what to buy, ie, if i move the library to an external drive am I able to back up the external drive via time machine, plus I assume if I do this i need a second external drive or time capsule to back up the library
Also the external drive is plugged directly into imac but I have an airport extreme is there any benefit plugging the drive into this, would this mean you access file from network (should you do this if its used for time machine), should I get rid of the extreme and buy a time capsule
    Thanks in advance

Hi, I'd recommend one of these...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
FW400 will be faster than USB2, & FW8000 even better.
I see no advantage to plugging it into Your Extreme.

  • My 5 year old iMac's hard drive is at the point of failing.  I'm trying to save al files on it, but it wont allow backup via Time Machine to an external hard drive.  How can I keep from losing all the files and programs if the hard drive fails?

I'm concerned that my iMac, purchased 5 years ago, is about the crash and I can't back up my files and programs to an external hard drive via Time Machine because the computer freezes after only a couple hundred MB and gets nowhere near the required amount.
How can I save these files and programs if the computer hard drive fails or has to be replaced without the backup being able to be done? I need to do something quickly, but I'm not sure what I can or should be doing.

Get an external hard drive, some good ones that I like are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro drives...they are very good and reasonably priced.
Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive.  Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box.  DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key.  That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives.  Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive.

  • HT201250 old data transferred to new computer via time machine, is external hard drive still usable

I set up my new macbook from an old macbook via time machine and an external WD Harddrive.
The setup partitioned my macbook to two user id's, now I need to back up.
The old user id is backing up everything again and the new user id wants to create a new backup to my WD Harddrive like it is not used.
I don't believe that my WD was partitioned.
Help!  How can I continue using my WD and backup both user id information without losing anything?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • Backup external HD USB-connected to TC via Time Machine

    Hi
I am wondering whether it is possible to backup the content of an external hard drive that is directly connected to Time Capsule via Time Machine in addition to backing up the MBP HD.
    My (relevant) setup:
MacBook Pro Late 2013 OS-X Mavericks
TimeCapsule 3TB gigabit ethernet connected to speedport W921V router
WD MyPassport 2TB external HD USB-connected to Time Capsule
TimeMachine is happily backing up my MBP drive to the TC, so this is all clear
Is it possible to configure TimeMachine to also backup the data on the external WD HD to the Time Capsule? If so, where and how do I need to configure this?
    Thx
    Joe

I would never use TM the way I have suggested you use it.. which is very naughty of me.. so I do not know exactly how TM will react.. it should not be a problem.. It does not care if a source is missing.. just the destination.
I was trying to give you a solution to your problem.. without you incurring extra expenses. It is the wrong way to do it.. and is why I would never do it.. IMHO TM is great for what it does.. incremental updates of your main drive.. it is LOUSY.. as a way of backing up an external drive.. because it will have huge issues recovering it.
second question: CCC would then replace time machine as backup SW, correct?
No, the idea is to run both. TM provides a huge benefit to setting up a new computer for instance.. if the old computer is stolen or lost or damaged.. you can migrate from TM to the new computer (at least you can on a good day. it is not unknown for TM to fail completely). You do this easily as if the old computer was sitting there and you were running files between the two. It is also as stated above a good incremental backup software.
What it is LOUSY at, is complete disk recovery.. it is even more lousy .. lousier at recovering the disk that is not the main OS.
Just glance through this forum area or do a search for TM recovery issues.. it is a most difficult software. And of late in Mavericks has become worse than ever. You do not want to have a situation where you believe you have a backup and actually don't. Or your photo library or itunes you expect is backed up and is actually not.. or happens to be corrupted without telling you.
Step in CCC.. it is able to create backups in situations where TM cannot.. ie from network drives. It can produce a bootable image.. so if your computer disk failed you would be up and running again in 2min flat by plugging in a USB drive with the image. You can even use it to incrementally backup.. but I don't use it that way. Two completely different backup softwares offers you more than double the protection.. because IMHO TM is so complicated half the time you cannot get what you want out of it. CCC is simple.. it makes images and adds files in a completely standard backup way. ie a file can be simply copied out of the disk image and back to the computer without any software backup recovery running. The files are in plain sight.. easy to reach and use. In TM it is hugely complicated.. read how TM works. It is helpful to understand the difference.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html
Also read pondini's take on using disk images.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html
His recommendation is what i also think is the best.. use both.. each has good and bad points.. using two completely different methods gives you a huge improvement in the value of the backups.. and CCC is easy to produce a clone to store offsite adding hugely to your benefit..
For $40 license makes a lot of sense to me.

I would like to backup my external HD with Time Machine in the HD of TC. Is it possible?
    Sorry, but not possible.
Time Machine can only back up the internal drive(s) in a Mac....or a drive that is connected directly to a Mac via USB or FireWire.....provided that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I am not recommending this, but you might be able to move the drive from the USB port to the Mac, and have Time Machine back it up that way.....then move it back to the USB port on the Time Capsule......but this will involve doing some risky things.....and manually changing settings around everytime you make the swap. Something will surely go wrong....but up to you if you want to try it.
Carbon Copy Cloner will back up the drive connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule to the Time Capsule disk, but these will not be Time Machine backups.  SuperDuper claims to also be able to do this.....but I have not tested it.

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
    4. Click on the Erase tab.
    5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    7. Click the Partition tab.
    8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
    9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    10. Click Apply.
    11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

  • Does the new airport extreme support backing up via time machine to an external hard drive pluged into the usb port

Does the new airport extreme support backing up via time machine to an external hard drive pluged into the usb port

Yes, but you might want to note that the port on the AirPort Extreme is only USB 2.0, and that it runs at about half the speed of the USB 2.0 port on a computer, so things are going to be quite SLOW as far as backups are concerned, or anything else for that matter.

  • Swap failing external hard drive Time Machine

I currently have a year or more's data backed up via Time Machine on an external Firewire drive. Of late, the external drive, although performs fine, makes a noise like a motorbike.
    Vrrm, vrrrrrm, vrrrrrrrrrrrrm
It's as annoying as heck and for me heralds its ultimate demise.
Just about to order a new one to replace it. Is there a clear and simple procedure for establishing the new drive as my time machine whilst maintaining the backups from the still working (albeit noisy) existing Time machine drive?

I have a new MacBook pro, I transferred files via time machine and a removable hard drive. Now new MacBook does not recognize the log in password. What can I do to reset the password?

Did you migrate when you first booted up in Setup Assistant or did you migrate later? When you migrate later it can create a second account, check in Mac HD/Users to see if this is the situation.

  • Even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?

even via time machine the new osx lion has deleted all my latest files in iPhoto and will only revert back to an old 2009 backup?... Help?!

Have you verified that the original files are missing from the Originals/Masters folder?  There are time when the library might appear empty due to a damaged database file but still has the files.  If you can open the library package via the Finder to see if the files are really missing or just can't be seen by iPhoto there are fixes you can try.
If the files are there make a temporary, backup copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
