Swap G4 Hard drive with G5 Hard drive.

I was wondering if it were possible to swap two hard drives.
I currently work on a G4 and am upgrading to a G5. Can i simply take out the G4 Hard drive and swap it with the G5 Hard drive.
Then put the G5 Hard drive in the G4?
Will the OS and programs work as usual?
Both machines are running OS 10.4.9
Thanks

The software may work but the drives use different connectors. The G4 uses ATA, the G5 uses SATA. You can buy an adapter to use a G4 drive in a G5, but you would have to buy a PCI card to use a G5 drive in a G4. It would be simpler to connect the computers with a Firewire cable and copy over the files you need. You can use the Migration Assistant (Utilities folder) to do it.

  • My Serial Won't be accepted after APPCARE swapped my hard drive

    Hey,
A while back my hard drive started slowing down and having errors, and sometimes even spinning down while i was trying to access it. I got it warranty repaired at my local store. They swapped my hard drive or a new one, and reinstalled osx. They did not do backups of any kind, it was not necessary. But now that I try to reinstall my software that I purchased with the computer originally, the serials are not accepted and it won't let me install it on my computer.

It wasn't? I think you've proved that theory wrong!

  • Hot swapping DLT tape drives

Is it possible to hot-swap a tape drive on an Enterprise 4000 running Solaris 5.5.1?
I have an E4000 with an array and tape drive attached. The drive seems to be kaput. I can get it to run for a little while, but my cron backups are failing. I've done all the hardware chacking I can (I'm 2500 miles away from the server) and had the on-site techs check the scsi connections, recycle the unit, clean it, et al.
I don't know where in the chain the drive is, or even if it's on the same scsi bus as the array. Is there any way I can find out which bus it's on, and which bus the array is on?
Assuming it's either the last device on the chain attached to the array or on it's own scsi bus, can I swap it with another drive set to the same scsi address?
    Thanks,
    Mark

As Emily Latilla said, "Never mind..." Answered the question myself.

  • Can I swap the hard drive from MacBook Pro 17 (2009) to MacBook Pro 15 (2006)?

My MacBook Pro 17 (2009) died. Pushing the power button gets no response. I had had problems with it for some time turning it on, it usually taking many many tries. Plus when I'd try to do a restart after updating software, instead of doing so it'd shut off super quick with a *pop* sound. There was never any of the typical hard drive going bad sounds I've read about and seen in videos. Since it has refused to turn on I've gone through every suggestion I can find to get it to turn back on. Unhook the battery and try starting from just the power cord; the shorting the power pads move; some thing undoing the battery, counting to 10, and then the next steps now escape my memory, but doing more counting to 10 inbetween; unplugging the battery and leaving it sit for 2 days with no power cord plugged in either, then hook it to a power cord and turn it back on; and so many more.
Also the symptoms just before this fiasco were as follows: I had a CD in the internal drive and was browsing through the images on it via the handy previewer using the space bar. Then I decided to quite, tried ejecting the CD by dragging the icon to the trash, and nothing. I tried again. The same. Then I pushed on the eject key, with the ejct icon popping up on the screen momentarily, but still nothing. Then it appreared as though some things worked and other things were not working. In my frustration I went to the Apple menu and clicked restart with a wince knowing it was going to take forever to turn back on. It did the usual quickly off with a *pop* and made super short lame attempts to turn back on when using the power button. Of course the CD kept trying to spin for a split second and then the little indicator light on the front would go out, then no noise at all.
Since I do not believe it is the hard drive (of course I could be wrong not being a Mac nerd at all), I was wondering if I can switch the hard drive to my Macbook Pro 15 (2006)?
I tried this, but it would not read the hard drive. Just a blank grey screen. If it is possible to do this swap, what are the exact steps to do? Please answer like I'm completely illiterate on this, because I really am. I'm super scared of losing everything on the dead MacBook's hard drive. Yeah yeah, I know: then why have I not been backing things up? I had the week prior. Believe me I WILL be doing it daily from now on if I get this mess straightened out!

OGELTHORPE really sorry to keep bugging you, but it's obvious you know what you are talking about and I'm stuck on thin ice here getting this fixed, because there are no authorized Apple reps here. I would rather shoot myself for messing up, then to trust someone who "says" they can fix my Mac down here.
I checked out a company owned by ebay that is the same down here, called MercadoLibre. There are quite a few adapters listed there. I'd like to give you links for some and was wondering if you minded taking a look to tell me if any seem to fit the bill. Some have specs in English, others don't. (Google translater is my friend!)

These are all cost effective enough that I don't care the price - cheap, expensive - whichever will work the BEST!
I've also looked for the 7200 rpm HDD, and although I found some, I'll be danged if they are not 3.0, instead of the 2.5 that I have. Grrrr! I was willing to spend the $90 for 1tb... or being the non-techie that I am, can this 3.0 go into my 2006 MBP??
Just so you can see what all is listed right now:
    http://listado.mercadolibre.com.uy/7200-rpm-hdd-2.5-macbook-pro
Another newbie question: How do I check what the amount if RAM is presently installed in it? (I might be a greenhorn, but I take pride in not being a dumbie and I learn when taught)
Right now, I'm willing to spend almost anything. I want a few files that are on the HDD at the moment that I was stupid and did not backup on my external. One file I worked on all day due to the dimensions I had to design it at and each effect took a long time to render. I really don't want to do that one again!.. I'm also willing to spend anything that won't cost me the price of a new iMac. Figure that should be the next one I buy that is affordable, but won't be overworked like the MBP was.
Once again, thanks much for all of your help!

  • Can I swap my hard drive to another ibook g3?

My screen has broken [liquid damage] and to get it fixed it'll cost £100-£300 and I don't know if it's just the screen gone. It will be cheaper probably to buy a new ibook off ebay and sell my ibook in parts. But I'll need to back up my 60gb hard drive. Firstly, how do I do that? If I remove it will my data all be gone? Can I install that in another ibook g3 [whether of same speed and RAM or not]? The hard drive is seemingly undamaged because the computer still turns on and surely you need data from that to power up - or at least it means the logic board is fine.
Anyway, how do I back it up? Would it actually be better buying a new ibook off ebay - do I need the exact same specifications as mine in order to swap hard drives if that's possible
    thanks

    Steph,
First what kind of liquid? Coffee, coke, wine and the like can be very corrosive to minute electrical traces on the motherboard.
the liquid went onto the top part of the keyboard where the speakers and power buttons are found but may have got into the inner edge of the screen and obviously with that not going on it has broken it.
Not necessarily the LCD but the cables for the LVDS and inverter go through that area. Also liquid in that area can easily find it's way to the logic board and that could be fatal. I intend to post instructions on dealing with liquid problems. First of all iBooks should have all power pulled and necessary drying out procedures initiated before attempting power up.
the cursor is not moving so i guess that has broken and so i can't test if the keyboard is working because i can't get logged on. the battery has decharged itself so somehow liquid has got into whatever powers that up, maybe the adapter port as that's on the side?! it does still power up, i can hear it whirring, does that mean that the logic board is still ok? and when you said that if i have a working logic board i can recover data that way, does that mean if i put my logic board from my ibook into a new one, my data would still be on it?
Your data is on the hard drive.
and with the powering up but no screen image does it also mean that the hard drive is still intact?
Probably. Will it go into target mode as in my first post?

  • Decided to use MacService to swap my hard drive

I have 80 gb hard drive that was running out of space. So, for 245, I got a 160gb Hitachi drive, which includes shipping, cloning the new drive, and installation. I went to the local MacMall and they wanted 350 to do it, or I could have bought the hard drive for 110, and the drive case for 40. That would have saved me 100, but that is not enough to get me to open the case, and swap it. I am pretty handy, and have even built a computer before, but I just did not want to mess with my powerbook that much. I will let you know how it goes. The web site is macservice.com.

I just got my powerbook back today from Mac Service. I can't tell the difference at all. And that is great. The hard drive is now huge, my computer is working as fine as ever, and that is exactly what I wanted. Now, I can use my old hard drive as an external backup after I hop to MacMall in Torrance and get a case for it for about $30. While I am there, I may upgrade my RAM to 2 gb from the current 1 gb. The price for that will be about $60, since I have a Dec, 2005, model, with the PC 4200 ram.

  • Swapping out hard drives - Quicksilver

I have 2 identical G4 Quicksilver PowerMacs and the logic board is fading fast on the first one. The 2nd one has been offline for a few years now and I would like to move the drive with my apps and data from the 1st machine into the 2nd one (I started the 2nd one today and it ran great).
Other than moving my drive to the 2nd machine, are there any other things that I should consider? Both drives are the same size, same make/model etc. I was going to move the larger RAM sticks to the 2nd machine and boot it up prior to the swap but cannot think of anything else that might be a show-stopper.

    Hello BB,
    I'm with Grant.
I'm sure they do, but I've never seen a logic board fade fast, or slow; they usually work or they don't, and they don't fail very often.
By, contrast, hard drives fail all the time - particularly when they're eight years old - and often in a protracted manner, so that you can see (or hear) their demise coming. It might be time to be sure you're backed up.
If your Macs are absolutely identical, everything interchanges freely. (2001 and 2002 Quicksilvers, however, are not identical, as the 2001s do not natively recognise the larger [over 128GB] hard drives.)
Dual processor Quicksilvers tend to run a little hot - some hotter than others - which can shorten component life. If you don't mind the extra noise, you can fit a more powerful CPU fan; makes it sound like a leaf blower, though.

    Jon

  • Swapping eMac hard drives

Our eMac recently gave out & I don't believe it's repairable, however I do have several files & software on it that I still use. I have been able to find a "new" eMac in working order, however the newer model is a 1.25 GHz (post April 2004)  and my old one is a 1 GHz (pre April 2004). So my question is, would my old hard drive (which I believe is still good) be compatible with the newer machine if I were to swap them out? And if so, would my software still be there/usable afterwards (some of my install discs have been lost and damaged)? Thanks.
    Dave Dobesh

    edex67,
eMacs predate SATA. They use PATA drives:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/emac/specs/emac_1.25.html
    David,
A lot of 1,25G eMacs have bad logic boards--a lot!
See if the newer unit's serial number falls into these ranges:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
The program that fixed the issue expired several years ago.

  • Swapping USB Hard Drives

On my Mac Pro I replaced an 80GB USB drive called "Files" with a 500GB drive, and after restoring the "Files" volume from backup, decided that my 300GB USB "Music" drive would be a better home for my files, and the 500GB "Files" hard drive would have more space for my growing music library. After swapping the contents successfully on these two drives, I also swapped their volume names. iTunes has no problems finding its source files on the newly renamed "Music" volume, and similarly there's no problem with accessing the files on my "Files" drive.
However, when connecting to these volumes from my Macbook Prod, the drives are backwards: opening "Files" brings up my music library and opening "Music" shows my files. I've rebooted each machine but that hasn't changed this behavior. Obviously I can continue to accommodate this quirk by opening the "wrong" drive, but I'd like to understand why this is happening and make it so that the Macbook Pro opens the volumes in the same way as they are on the Mac Pro to which they're attached.
    Thanks,
    Nick

Try starting up from a system software CD or DVD, and repair your disk using Disk Utility:
Insert the Mac OS X Install or Restore disc.
Restart the computer, then hold the C key during startup.
From the Apple menu, choose Disk Utility. Do this in the first screen of the Installer. Don't click Continue. If you click Continue in a Mac OS X Installer version earlier than 10.2, you must restart from CD again.
    Click the First Aid tab.
    Click Repair Disk.
After repairing the disk, try to start from the Mac OS X hard disk.
If you are able to start up in OS X, then go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and repair permissions on the hard drive.

  • Swapping a hard drive from my mini

I upgraded my mini to a 320 gig hard drive, and I'm selling it to buy a macbook pro. I'm going to swap the 250 with the 320. Will that just work or will I have to reload the OS? I've made a time machine back up. I've seen the option after you install OSX to retrieve data from a time machine back up. How well does that work. Are there any concerns I should have with loosing data in this process?

You'll probably have to reload OSX as the MBP has new drivers (like GPU) that the mini never needed to have.
Of course you can just hook it and see what hits the fan but I'd probably play it safe and reload the OS

  • Bad screen.  Will Apple Store swap my hard drive into new machine?

I got my Macbook Pro 15" a week ago.  Within a couple of days it developed a prominent green vertical line near the center of the screen, top to bottom.  I have a meeting with a genius tonight.  I assume they'll give my a whole new laptop.  Can they swap out my existing hard drive to the new laptop?  It's not that I have a ton of user data, it's more that I have installed boot camp and Windows 7 on the other partition and it would be pain to backup both partitions before this meeting.

So I took it to the Apple store tonight and they're going to replace the screen.  They didn't have one in stock so they'll order that and it will probably arrive mid-week.  Then I'll bring it back in, leave it overnight then come back again the next day.  Three visits for a broken screen on a week-old laptop!  I'm not too happy about that but at least I get to keep my HD.

  • Swapping internal Hard drive vs external Hard drive

My iMac G5's logic board is dying. I just bought a refurbished Intel iMac from Apple.com (not the newest version). It has a 250 gig HD which I thought I would swap with a 1 TB drive but I have just discovered that the interior is not as accessible as the G5 and drive swapping needs to be done by a pro.
But I would like to do the following set-up culled from the archives instead:
"There is operational efficiency to running the OS and apps off a limited size volume, about 160GB to 250GB, and storing user data on a separate drive. My setup is the stock 160GB internal drive which is mostly used for the OS and apps. Most of my user data is on an external drive, so more than 50% is free space on that internal drive. I have a 320GB FireWire (400) drive that holds most of my user data. And I have a 750GB USB 2.0 drive that is my Time Machine archive drive, which backs up the internal drive and FireWire drive."
I wold like to do this set-up using the 250 gb iMac drive for the OS and apps and the 1 TB drive as an external for the user data. Here's what I've got -- iMac with 250 gb HD no info on it yet but the OS and apps that come with it. My old system, setting, files etc. are backed up on my 500gb Time Capsule (as well as still on the old iMAc G5 which can turn on but when it goes to sleep it does not come back on without a restart and other issues.) I just bought a 1 TB drive that I thought would go into the iMac but if I use your set-up I will get a case for it and use it externally.
How do I get all this stuff configured so I have my apps and OS on the new iMac and the user data on the external? The catch is this -- the old IMac G5 has over 300 gigs of info, apps and OS on it so I cannot put it all on the new iMac and the move it around.
    Thanks
    Robert

    Hi Robert
I did put a larger HD in my Early Cord Duo, but as you have noticed it is a lot harder that the G5.
If you do decide to take on the challenge, take your time peeling back the foil EM shielding around the display as it rips real easy. You will also have to carefully pry the temp sensor from the old drive and re-cement it onto the new one so that the SMC is getting the correct feedback to properly control the fans..

  • How do I swap out hard drives without losing all of my playlists?

I got a bigger hard drive to store all of my music, and can't do a mass switch. I could delete everything out of my itunes and then add all from the new, but then I would lose all of my playlists.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.
Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=pd_cp_pc_0
