[Swap] I swap too much

Hi,
I have been experimenting swap issues for about one month. I swap for no reason, while I still have free RAM memory, and while the parameter vm.swappiness = 1 in my /etc/sysctl.conf.
Have a look:
free -h
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3,8G 3,5G 272M 0B 106M 2,2G
-/+ buffers/cache: 1,2G 2,5G
Swap: 2,7G 93M 2,6G
Do you have an idea about how to solve that ? I had not some months ago.
Sincerely

Still, swapping is usually an indication that you need more RAM, as it is running out.  So in your case in which it is obvious that you are not running out of RAM, I think you should do a "swapoff -a" just to see if your system starts to hang or starts OOM killing things even when the RAM is not full.

I don't necessarily think that there is a "correct" way between the kernel command line and sysctl.{conf,d}.  I just try to configure things with the native tools of my system, since they are going to be running anyway.  I think for me, it just serves as a way of learning about those tools.  Using the kernel command line will actually produce the same end result, I just like to keep in under control.  As an example, it is possible to actually fully disable udev and specify every module to be loaded on the kernel command line, but that just seems silly since there are other ways to go about it.  Udev has become pretty central to our systems in terms of harware initialization, and it works pretty well, so why not use it?  And even if you have a reason not to use it, it would just make more sense to create a list of necessary modules and put them in /etc/modules-load.d wouldn't it?  Thats just my two cents.
If you are using a script to change power parameters between AC and battery power, then none of those parameters are going to do anything anyway since the script is just going to handle things itself anyway.  I used to use a script to change parameters on my system, but honestly, with the power of today's machines, I really see no reason to enforce inefficient policies when using AC.  I think of it in terms of the usability of the hardware between the two options.  Can you really tell a difference between the perfrmance of the computer when you have it plugged in vs. not plugged in?  I couldn't, and I would imagine that most people won't be able to apart from the possibility of benchmarks and certain special cases (like real-time audio uses).
So what I have done is I just used powertop (and various things I found about the interwebs) to configure my laptop to be more power friendly.  They are set to those parameters by a combination of tmpfiles.d, udev/rules.d, and sysctl.d, and they do not change.  Alternatively, you could just redirect values into the /sys and /proc files, and these parameters can be found by using powertop's ability to generate an html report (see the powertop man page).  But again, by doing it with the tools that were on my system, I was able to learn how to use sysctl, tmpfiles, and how to write basic udev rules.
I believe I have told taylorchu before about the incorrect rc6 setting in his 3x battery life thread (powerdown is taylorchu's script, right?), but apparently it was never changed.  Just take a look at the modinfo of i915.  rc6 has a 1 value, rc6p has a 2 value, and rc6pp has a value of 4.  So if you want all three, you add those up and get 7.  It is not imperative that you make this change, but if it were me and I was trying to implement power saving, I would want the potential for the greatest level of power saving that I could.  I think that it is just a common misconception that rc6 should be a 1, because that is what ubuntu does.  Though I feel like this is just a rememant of when rc6 was in its infancy and both didn't have the deeper sleep states and didn't necessarily turn it on by default on all hardware.

  • Switching MBPs - Can I swap SSDs without too much drama?

Hey Guys - ok, I know this is totally noobish, but I am switching from my existing MBP (2010) to another MBP. Question is, would I be able to just pull out my existing SSD from the one MBP and put it in the new one and not skip too much of a beat?
To add some color, I am switching from a MC847LL/A unit (i7 2.8Ghz, Nvidia GT330M, etc) to a new generation MBP (quad core i7, AMD Radeon GPU, etc). So, as I am a recent convert from the PC world, I know with the nuances with drivers and the like, it would be more beneficial to do a clean install, but didn't know if that is the case with Macs and MBPs.
Guidance and feedback is most welcome. Thanks for your support and patience with my questions.

Unless the to machines are identical hardware configuration no you should not simply switch SSDs as the build for each is slightly different. Some have had OK success doing this but most run into problems. IMHO the easiest way to do it is to Clone the SSD onto and external HD using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, this creates a bootable clone. Then move the SSD into the new machine and reformat it using the Install Disc that came with the new machine. Then do an install of OS X from the Install Disc onto the SSD and finally use Setup Assistant to migrate from the external HD to the freshly formatted SSD. Here are instructions on Setup Assistant.

i started SGEN, but it is giving time_out errors. please help me on this issue.
MY hardware details on quality server
    operating system : SuSE Linux 10 SP2
    Database : 10.2.0.2
    SAP : ECC 6.0  SR2
    RAM size : 8 GB
Hard disk space : 500 GB
    swap space : 16 GB.
    regards
    Ramesh

    Hi,
    >i started SGEN, but it is giving time_out errors. please help me on this issue.
You are supposed to run SGEN as a batch job and so, it should be possible  to get time out errors.
I've seen Full SGEN lasting from 3 hours on high end systems up to 8 full days on PC hardware...
    Regards,
    Olivier

    Thanks for all the replies.
I've now installed the ad blocker, thrown away the unwanted files, and thrown away a copy of Firefox that Adware said had a problematic extension.
Things are better, but still slow.
Activity Monitor shows that with just Mail, Chrome and Excel running, 2.9GB of my 4GB RAM is used. Opening InDesign (always slow) increase that to 3.2GB. But the graph stays green.
Console shows several potential problems but I don't know if any are significant. In any case I will call my Mac store tomorrow to ask their advice about RAM.

  • OIM 11g using too much memory and not releasing it when shutting down

    Hello,
we have a problem with OIM 11g using too much memory (about 5gb) and it's not releasing it at shutdown (4gb still used).
We are using a VM with RedHat Linux 5.6. Originally we had 4gb RAM + 2gb swap file. We installed Admin Server, OAM, OIM and SOA on that machine but quickly realised we couldn't run all 4 programs at once in 6gb. AdminServer could run with 2 other products, but it was a tight fit in memory.
So we increased the RAM to 8gb (still 2gb swap file). But then our problem occured : I start the Admin Server (2.7gb total memory used), then OAM (4.6gb total memory used) and then OIM. After it started the server is now using 9.6gb of memory (~300mb of free memory) ! The problem gets even better : after I shut down everything (OIM, OAM, admin server) the "top" command show that there is still 4gb of memory used even tho nothing else is running on the server ! There is absolutely no other process (other than root stuff) running and no other users connected to the machine. After a reboot, it shows 400mb of memory used. I tried restarting the programs and it did the same thing.
Our intuition is that there might be a memory leak or some bug in OIM that might use up almost all the free memory and it's not releasing it upon shutdown. It might have been there before we increased the memory but have not noticed it since memory was already tight.
Anyone encountered the same problem ? Any idea ? Any suggestion to narrow down the problem ?
    Thank you

You can adjust the memory settings for WLS by editing the setSOADomainEnv.sh file that can be found in your /middleware/user_projects/domains/<domain>/bin/ folder. There is an argument called PORT_MEM_ARGS which is used to set your Java memory arguments. This way you can decrease/increase the amount of memory used by each managed server.
I usually type "ps -ef | grep oracle" to see what processes are running by the oracle user. This way the output doesn't get cluttered with root processes.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    1) What version of Oracle you running on 7.5 release of linux?
2)How did you come to the conclusion that because of this, your update is slow?

  • Macbook using too much memory

    Hi guys,
Weirdly my macbook pro (mid 2012 model) is using too much ram, core i5, 4 gb ram
Take a look at this screenshot...
While I took this screen, I was using only chrome (4 tabs), itunes (wasn't playing anything), and utorrent, nothing else!
I have a friend who has a Macbook Air 13.3" and with VM, CAD software, music playing, safari, his macbook uses 3.80 gb (same as me without VM)
I've done a clean install of the OSX 10.9.2 (to remove previous mountain lion files etc), my computer even frozen once, had to manually turn it off...
Does anyone know what can I do? Thinking about buying buying 2 modules of 4 gb but is there another solution besides buying more ram? This laptop isn't 1 year old =/
    Thank you guys!

I do not see any problems with the Activity Monitor data in regards to RAM.  As I see it, there are no Swaps and the Wired RAM is normal in my estimation.
As an aside, i suggest that you try another browser as I alluded to you before.  Also I would get rid of the torrent application.  They are often an invitation to malware or trojans.
Comparing your friends MBA and your MBP is still not an Apple to Apple situation.  (pun intended)  The Air has ssd storage, your Pro does not which will distort the results.  In addition you would have to compare them with EXACTLY the same criteria.  Doing that is not worth the effort.
Unless you are having performance issues there is no cause for alarm.
Do consider increasing it to 8 GB if the bank account allows.  The new OSXs seem happier with that amount.
    Ciao.

  • My MBP mid 2014 is using too much RAM

My MBP mid 2014 is using too much ram on kernel task, and some others what can I do to fix this?

To add to Tim's excellent advice, look at my numbers for my  quad-core i7 iMac with 12GB RAM installed:
As you can see, the system has reserved almost all the available RAM but the swaps are zero and the memory pressure is on the bottom of the scale. My computer runs very fast.
RAM handling in OSX changed with OS10.9 and continues in 10.10. The measures you were using only apply to Mac OSX 10.8 and older.
If your swaps move up into the Gig range, you are probably using a bunch of RAM. You cannot upgrade RAM in a 2014 Retina model so it behooves you to avoid third-party utilities like "FreeMemory,"  keep an eye on Safari extensions, and be frugal with your user login items (System Preferences > Users and Groups > {your account} > Login Items tab).

  • SpamAssassin and too much CPU load

    I have been testing my messaging server and SpamAssassin integration. Everything seems fine except too much CPU load coming from spamd (SpamAssassin's daemon). I am testing them on a UltraSparcII-i, 256MB, Solaris 10 box. When I loaded it with 4msg/min containing 50K ascii text each on the receiving side, the spamd process went up to 90% of CPU load, and then just died silently. My questions;
    1) Is there any performance tuning that I should do to avoid that much CPU load? Or is this just normal?
    2) I have heard of another anti-spam product called dspam. How can I integrate dspam with the Java Messaging Server?
    Thanks!

Installation of JES Messaging Server by itself suggests 1.2 gig of RAM. SpamAssassin adds to that suggestion.
You have less than 1/4 of the suggested RAM. You're 'way short.
SpamAssassin will use cpu. I found that nx x86 box was far less expensive to feed, and works extremely well for Messaging and SpamAssassin. 1 gig or ram for my PC costs about $75. Adding ram to your Sparc will cost mor than a PC complete.
    4 messages/min isn't much, but. . .
You're likely swapping pretty hard. Check for "I/O wait". I often use "top" for a quick look at such.
When I switched from an "ultra-5" with 384 megs ram, to an AMD 1200+ with 1 gig of ram, my system went from feeling totally buried to feeling mostly un-used. I'm currently able to handle far more than 4 message/minute, with no overload or swapping.

  • Dual-USB External DVD/CD RW 'drawing too much power'

    Hello,
I had to make an emergency purchase down my local electrical store because my internal drive has stopped working properly. So, bought one of these: (http://cnmlifestyle.com/) DVD/RW that is supposed to be mac compatible. It has two USB connections - one for power & another for data I presume.
When I plug it into a USB port, a dialogue box appears saying 'Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled.' And so therefore there isn't any power to the unit... and it won't work.
This appears immediately after plugging one of the two in. When I plug in the second USB connection a second, identical dialogue box appears. If I connect then re-start, two of the dialogue boxes appear...
Might it be that this unit is not compatible with laptops? (there is no information about voltage on the unit).
    Many thanks,
    Jay

Optical drives have motors and that makes them power hogs. If it does not get power from its own power brick, it could be overpowering your USB bus, especially if you have other USB devices connected.
Have you tried swapping the cables on the Mac's ports? Some people report that the left- and right-hand ports produce difference power levels.
If the drive does not have a separate power source, it was designed for mobile use on a notebook computer but someone in Marketing was not thinking about power issues when trying to jump on the mobile bandwagon.
I see two solutions, the best listed first:
    1) return the drive for one that has a power brick self-powered)
    2) Purchase a powered USB hub (has a separate power brick). That way, the drive gets a lot of power from the hub. This one:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Macally/TRIHUB4/
shows an ac adaptor is included

A check in top reveals that jack and oss2jack are the main culprits.
Because of this, I cannot load hydrogen with the ns_kit7free samples (which is 200MB worth of .wav files). It terminates (probably due to trying to access too much memory) when I attempt to switch the drumkit to ns_kit7free. I have managed to load it before, when I was just using ALSA directly. Is there any way to reduce the memory consumption of jack and oss2jack?
I have increased my swap space to > 2GB (as seen in the free output) but it doesn't help.

jonathantan86 wrote:From top's output jack took up 2/3rd of the memory used. About adding more memory, well...it's a laptop so it's difficult to add memory.
Well, if this can't be solved and you don't have to use ALSA, try OSS/Commercial (wiki); it has a virtual mixer in kernel-space and supports up to 32 sound output streams

  • Maybe I'm expecting too much of the new MBP...

Maybe I'm expecting too much of my MacBook pro...
Earlier I was on the Early 2011 MBP and it just seemed to lag. I had a 2006 MacBook up until recently and I don't see a difference hardly at all.
I was on firefox running maybe 10 tabs, and had a few other applications open, and it was very sluggish and lagging. Seemed to have the rainbow spining thing come up constantly.
Am I expecting too much? Or do I have a lemon?

You should notice a significant difference between a MBP and an older MacBook. RAM would be my first thought - look under the Apple menu for About this Mac and see if it actually registers the 4GB of RAM. Second, how much of your hard drive is in use? If you've filled it up with video, music, and pictures it might be too full so that there isn't enough room for swap files and caches.
Also, if you migrated all your applications from the old computer to the new you might have migrated some applications (especially startup items) that are incompatible. To see if this might be the problem, create a new account and boot into it. If the new account feels peppier you'll know the problem exists in your user account.

  • Too much caching in 2008, how can I limit file-cache?

2008 Server with enough RAM, client copies a server stored file to the local drive, the server "eats" up all his ram, and when the server hits the limit it slows down to crawl speed, like he would be swapping out his cache too. Especially annoying if the server runs hyper-v guests, they nearly stop. I saw that effect on a lot of servers, but all my searches failed. 2008-R2 does not show that annoying effect, so I hope again it can be adjusted in 2008.
See this screenshot (Update interval of taskmanager is 5 seconds): http://csb-filderstadt.homepage.t-online.de/Too-much-caching.png
Server 2008 enterprise, 16 GB RAM, 2 Quad-core, uses 650 MB (the hyper-v guests are not running) when without load. One client copies a .vhd file of about 70 GB from the server to himself. The network speed is OK, about 100 MBytes/s, copy speed slows down to about 80 MB/s when the RAM limit is reached.
But how can I prevent that the simple file cache eats up all RAM, and then slows down the machine to crawl, including all hyper-v guest (if they are running). Opening a taskmanager takes about 1 minute when the limit is reached, normally less than a second.
Is there a setting in the registry so I can either limit the RAM used for caching, or a way to tell the filecache to leave more free RAM for the actual work?

    Guys,
This is an old post but I have been looking everywhere for a solution.
    Below is the server config:
    Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64bit
    12 GB Ram
    HyperV - 2 Virtual
Virtual 1 - 1 GB - Virtual server only created and powered on not used
Virtual 2 - 2 GB - Virtual server only created and powered on not used
    Exchange 2010 on Physical server
less than 10 users on exchange
Current Mail box per user - approx 3 GB
    AV - Nod32
    BES Express on Physical server
When I reboot the server the Memory usage is around 60% but slowly store.exe starts to eat the memory and finally it reaches 98% and then server hangs. This is so regular that sometimes I have to reboot the server 3 or 4 times a week.
BTW, I tried to limit the memory usage to 3GB via ADSI after googling but store.exe keeps on using and there was no use making this change.
    ADSI change: msExchESEParamCacheSizeMax = 393216
Can someone please please help me.
    Regards
    J
Your setup is wrong for your usage.
    My recommendation would be:
1 Virtual Exchange with 8 GB RAM (or 6GB with dynamic up to 8GB) and four virtual CPU's
1 Virtual Blackberry Server with 2 GB RAM and two virtual CPU's.
Host machine: Only AV and Hyper-V, nothing else, not even connected to an active directory domain if not REALLY needed.
This will solve your memory issues without requiring hacking 'round the cache settings of Exchange.

  • Malicious or not? Message popped up: Mozilla security found (something like too much, forget exact word) activity on your computer so it will do a fast scan of system file. With OK button.

I was looking at youtube.com, which always tells me my browser is not supported and recommends I download Firefox, but that is what I was using, so I went to Firefox to check for updates. (I think I also had freecycle.org open.) Then this message popped up in a new page: Mozilla security found (something like "too much", forget exact word) activity on your computer so it will do a fast scan of system file. There was an OK button. The page address was: http://update17.stegner.ce.ms/index.php?Q7Lhl9ShbRxGJXpkM1VLSi4ZE8H4pTedoVPySgeppM3VpC+thEspcFG7qxHgn1pdsC2h5ygPGWI3t5hXqMzL9EQaZZ3J1e3CKXgCb0Qp. I did not click OK but copied the link and closed the window which closed the internet. I have never seen this before and would like to know if it is really Mozilla or possibly something malicious. Thank you.

Good catch. That almost certainly is an invitation to download malware.
There are a lot of infected web sites pushing "fake antivirus" software. If you have any doubts about whether your system might have become infected, you can supplement your regular security software with these two highly regarded scanners:
    Malwarebytes Anti-malware : http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
    SUPERAntiSpyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/

  • Sites Taking too much time to open and shows error

    hi,
i've setup sharepoint 2013 environement correctly and created a site collection everything was working fine but suddenly now when i am trying to open that site collection or central admin site it's taking too much time to open a page but most of the time
does not open any page or central admin site and shows following error
event i go to logs folder under 15 hive but nothing useful found please tell me why it takes about 10-12 minutes to open a site or any page and then shows above shown error.

This usually happens if you are low on hardware requirements.  Check whether your machine confirms with the required software and hardware requirements.
