Swapped hard drives, now nothing shows up in iTunes

I recently upgraded my computer from an 80GB drive to a 250GB drive. I connected the 250GB drive and turned the 80GB into a USB backup for my music and movies. The 80GB drive is where my music used to live. It was the D: drive, and when I connected the new 250GB drive, I name it D: and changed the 80GB to E. I then copied all of my music and movies to the new, 250GB D: drive. When I launched iTunes, nothing was there. I tried importing my music, but the podcasts, movies, TV Shows, etc are all still gone.
How can I get back to where I was before I swapped drives?

I can see the files on the new hard drive, so I know they are still around. I'm afraid to sync as I may lose everything. What do I do?

First - re-read all the instructions and figure out where you might have dropped a step. Below are three similar sites that explain the same process. One may help you diagnose what went wrong.
My guess is that you moved or corrupted your Library database file in the process. But without more information, I am just taking a shot in the dark.

- Do you have any camera, scanner or similar software installed? That may prevent iTunes from seeing the iPod.

Files moved to external hard drive - now nothing playing in iTunes...help!

*Just wondering if someone can give me some advice really. I think / know I've made a bit of a botch up of my files :-(*

I downloaded Lion on my iMac. It apparently cleaned out the hard drive. Nothing shows up from before. It looks like a brand new computer. It is backed up on Time machine. Any idea of why this happened and suggestions on restoring? Thanks.

I downloaded Lion on my 4 yr old iMac. The download stalled at the last minute so I clicked "CANCEL". When it was restarted, Lion was there, with no apparent option but to go ahead and install so I assumed it was okay. Didn't transfer data from "another computer" when prompted - assumed it would transfer from that computer. It apparently cleaned out the hard drive. It looks like a brand new computer. None of my apps, programs, files, or thousands of photos.   It is backed up on Time machine, but it's a sickening sight. Any idea why this happened and suggestions before restoring? Thanks.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

Replaced iMac G5 hard drive - now nothing works except the fan :(

I have an iMac G5 ALS with the original 160 gb internal drive. I researched and printed the apple instructions for replacing the hard drive, copied all of my important files onto an external and then sat down to replace the drive. I followed the instructions step by step, doing well except that the temperature cable connector broke. So I did more research and many posts said that it didn't need to be connected to operate. I closed everything back up and hit the power button. All I got was the power light and fan noises, followed by increased fan speed after a minute or less. I could hear the hard drive spin briefly soon after I hit the power button.
Startup from the install disc you all will tell me. Well, I would if the disc drive would inject the disc.
So, now I've spent my whole afternoon trying different scenarios to troubleshoot. I've gotten nowhere. I tried reattaching the temperature cable wire by wire, no luck (of course there are four of them and they are loose, so which goes where I don't really know. I tried keeping them in the same order in which they leave the other connector). Nothing.
Okay, so if I put the original hard drive back in it must work until I get this figured out...nope. Now that I have the original hard drive replaced into the iMac I get the power light and fan noises, no sound, no screen. Same as with the unformatted new drive.
I was careful to connect everything back and I am really surprised in myself that I cannot make it work. The only thing that is truly different is the temperature cable, and I've read enough that says it should still start up.
Please help me if you have any ideas.

I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program.

It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.
I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer. No good.

Thats correct. I can see it in the list however when I attempt to erase it or partition it it's like it's not being found or recognised and it throws up the input/output error message. I am pretty sure that the sensor it attached correctly and it is a SATA drive. I can see all the infor regarding the drive when disk utility is open and it all looks good but I cant access it or do anything with it. It's taunting me!
The install disk is in the drive and the install program runs right up to the point where you have to select the location for the install and there is just nothing in the box where you have to select the hard drive icon.
I have my suspiscions about the drive but any help would be appreciated.

Restart your MBP holding the trackpad down and hopefully the disk will be ejected. Then try to return it and get a refund or put it in the trash. There is nothing that software does for your MBP that you cannot do yourself or with free software.
If can get your MBP started, delete all traces of the offending software. Worst case is that you may have to erase the HDD and reload the OS and your user data. I trust that you have a backup (minus MacTuneUp).

Can you see them in Disk Utility?
If so, can you select and Mount them?
If not, disconnect them, reset the iMac's SMC and then reconnect them.

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Wait fifteen seconds.
4. Attach the computer's power cord.
5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If you still can not see them, connect them back up to the iMac running the older OS, open Disk Utility and look to see how they are partitioned and formatted.

Swapping Hard Drive problem

Hello, I have a 2008 model Macbook pro. I recently pulled the hard drive from a windows pc and replaced that drive with a SSD. The windows drive was not reformatted, I figured I could do it through Disk Utility. However, the drive does not show up. I'm assuming it's currently formatted as ntfs or fat32.
The existing drive is bootable, but the machine is put back together and it's a pain to take apart. Wondering if I can boot into something like terminal and choose to reformat the drive.
The only drive that shows up is my bootable flash drive. I do have the ability to hook up the old drive through a USB to SATA adapter, and possibly boot that way. If I can get it to boot from that external drive, is there a way to format the newly installed drive without having to rip the whole thing a part?
I had a hard time with the * shaped screws getting them in and out, so I'm trying to avoid having to remove the drive again....
Any tips would be appreciated!

More info: I think there is something wrong on the motherboard side all of a sudden. Now when I put the original drive in it doesn't boot up anymore. I wonder if while removing the old drive, I damaged the Hard Drive Connector? I just ordered a replacement on ebay (only 9 bucks). What is odd is I'm pretty careful about removing things, since I have replaced many laptop components over the years, so I don't think I did anything damaging when swapping hard drives.
The laptop did work fine, but since it is a 5400 RPM drive, I wanted speed, so I wanted to just put a 7200 RPM or SSD. What I ended up doing this morning was to hook up the SSD externally and choose to install Mavericks to that drive through my bootable USB. Than, once I booted successfully, I re-took the laptop apart, and put the SSD drive into the laptop. I didn't put the rail screws on this, I was just testing if it booted, so I just set it in the area it will reside. I booted and it wouldn't boot up at all, never saw Apple logo, just showed a blinking folder with quesiton mark on the screen.
If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd appreciate it, but now the internal drive connections don't seem to work, but I can boot externally for now. I figured I'd order the Hard Drive connector kit from ebay and see if that fixed it, since that is a 9 dollar part....

External Lacie Hard Drive Won't Show On Desktop

I have a LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface. I know this topic has been posted before but nothing seems to be working for me. The hard drive will not show on my desktop, but it does show up in the Disk Utility. It's there, but I can't access it.
I have disconnected the drive many times. I have repaired the permissions on both drives more than once. I have swapped cables between firewire and USB. I have tried shutting down everything, unplugging everything and waiting 15 mintues before turning everything on. (Three times) (I have tried turning the computer on before connecting the drive, no good. I tried again with the drive already plugged in, no good, and also tried turning the computer on, then plugging the drive in and turning it on.
I have another LaCie Hard Drive, The one that has the design by F.A. Porsche and is 250GB. This drive connects perfectly. I don't understand. Hope someone out there can help me out, take care,

External Hard drive not even showing up on my desktop

I am plugging in my external hard drive and nothing happens. Did I do something to erase the whole thing? Why doesn't it show up at all on my desktop?

I get this problem every now and again. I noticed it occurs after being used with a windows pc. For some reason if my external hard drive hasn't been ejected properly when on a windows pc it won't show up on my mac at all, not even in disk utility.
Solution that works for me:
Simply plug it back into a windows pc and properly eject it by right clicking the drive and slecting eject.
If you don't have a pc to hand or can't be bothered boot camping, you can run a virtual instance of windows in parrelles desktop and select the hard drive with the usb devices menu.

Help!! Hard Drive Won't Show Up when trying to reinstall Leopard!

I am having a huge problem with my early 2006 iMac. If I turn it off, I have to reinstall the Leopard software. I have tried using Disk Warrior to restore the hard drive, I run disk Utility to repair permissions and all I get is invalid key length, volume check failed Filesystem verify and repair failed. Now nothing shows up to Select a destination. What do I do? I have a couple of weeks before I can get a new desktop (waiting for tax return)

From everything that you say you have done, it sounds like the disk in your iMac is going bad.
I certainly hope you have a backup because it sounds like you may very well need it soon.
