Swapping A Hardrive For SSD?

Am looking to buy a Samsung 850 pro SSD.
What is the procedure for swapping all my data/drivers etc from the old drive to a new SSD?
Is there a sticky somewhere?...will there be any issue with the Windows 7 licence key?

> What is the procedure for swapping all my data/drivers etc from the old drive to a new SSD?
General overview:
0. Clean up and defrag HDD using e.g. the free versions of CCleaner and Defraggler.
1. Put existing HDD in USB-attached external enclosure.
2. Put SSD in ThinkPad where the HDD was.
3. Boot from HDD.
4. Run migration/clone software. Samsung offers free software here: Samsung Data Migration Software
5. Reboot from SSD.
> .will there be any issue with the Windows 7 licence key?
Not if you use migration/clone software.

  • Swapping optical drive for SSD - How to set it up?

    I'm going to purchase a Crucial M4 128GB SSD for my Late 2011 13" i7 Macbook Pro. I don't use my optical drive at all, so I figure I may as well swap that out for my current 750GB HDD, and put the SSD in the main harddrive bay. I know full well how to physically install the respective drives, but my confusion comes when cloning the current HD onto the SSD, then moving all your media files (music, movies, documents etc) over to the HD, while keeping your system files and applications on the SSD.
    So what I really need, is a PROPER in depth guide from the start of the setup process (First boot after installation of physical drives) detailing how to copy my system files and applications over to the SSD so I can boot from it, while keeping my data & media files on the HD and being able to access them all as I normally would through finder.
    Any and all responses are appreciated - I need all the advice i can get!

    If you use a cloning software program it will move, actually copy, everything from your original drive to the SSD.
    No need to anything after that to get the SSD to boot and have all your programs and data.

  • Swapping OPtical Drive for SSD

    I am going to swap my optical drive for an SSD to make everything far more faster. My computer is out of warranty so it won't be affected. I was just wondering what will happen to my existing hard drive when I clone the old hard drive and copy it on to the SSD? Obviously I will make it so my computer boots       my SSD, does my old hard drive act in the same way an external hard drive does? Will I be able to save things on there just as easily as before?
    Thanks

    Go talk to Bmer over here
    http://macosg.com/
    What he did was move the hard drive to the optical bay and then replaced the boot drive with a SSD with a kit, he can walk you though it all as he's good with SSD's and all it's headaches. The kit also makes the Superdrive a external optical drive.
    SSD's make good boot and program drives, but not a good file drive, use the hard drive for that instead.
    One of the drawbacks is you can't boot from the OS X install disks or Windows disk or even perhaps not even Linux disks on a external optical drive.
    So you'll have to learn all about Carbon Copy Cloner and option bootable clones too.
    Download the free MacTracker and find out your SATA, as that can limit your SSD speed and could save you money as you buy the slower older SATA SSD's to match your hardware instead of the higher more expensive ones you can't use anyway.
    Good Luck.

  • X230 - swapping out HD for SSD - questions

    X230 2306 CTO here. I am about to replace the 320GB hard drive with a 256GB Samsung 830 SSD. I will use the factory rescue and recovery disks to install Windows 7 on the SSD. I'm still confused about a few things.
    Is the SSD already formatted or do I need to format it? If I need to format it do I do that before initiating the factory recovery process or do I do it during the recovery process?
    Should I download and install the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology Drivers? Do I do this before I start the recovery process?
    Do I need to do anything about aligning partitions?
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    If you plug in the drive and run the Lenovo restore, it should partition the drive, install Win 8. and drivers, and have it all perfectly aligned (Win. 8 does that automatically on it's install to a new drive anyway).  Once loaded, just use the Lenovo Update software to bring everytihng up to date and you'll be good to go.
    That's what I did and it was completely issue free.  Good luck!

  • How to mount and use swap partition _only_ for hibernation ?

    By "hibernation" I mean suspend to disk.
    My disk is a bit poor in RAM and the dirsk is slow, so I want to prevent any swap use of my system.
    AND I want to use hibernation, in order to boot fatser... and not to loose my workspace state.
    With a swap partition, hibernation works nicely.
    But any intensive web browser easily lealds to incresed memory usage, hence swap use.
    I have lowered the swap priority in /etc/fstab, down to 1 (and even tried 0).
    Still, I am not satisfied : If would like not to use swap at all but for hibernation.
    My plan was hence :
    1) disable the automatic swap mount at boot
    2) add a systemd unit to only moutn before hibernation
    The first part was easy : I added a "noauto" option in /etc/fstab. Great, no more mounted swap. But, as expected, no more successful hibernation.
    Then I tried to create a custom systemd unit.
    - first copy the unit file automatically generated by systemd in /run/systemd/generator/dev-....swap to /etc/systemd/system/
    - and add "Before=sleep.target" line in the Unit section
    Result file here :
    > cat /etc/systemd/system/dev-disk-by\x2duuid-blablablabla.swap
    [Unit]
    Description=Swap required for hibernation
    Before=sleep.target
    [Swap]
    What=/dev/disk/by-uuid/blablablablabla
    Priority=5

    Next step show be to enable it, but I first run a safety check :
    > systemctl show dev-disk-by\x2duuid-blablablabla.swap

    The problem here is that, somehow, a RequiredBy=swap.target line is apaprently automatically added, and makes exactly NOT what I want.
    I've been battling a bit with systemd, but so far I have no clue how to do this correctly.
    Important : I wand a clean "official" way, not to do a "service" unit that calls an home-brewed script taht calls swapon. I can do that, but systemd should be able to do it better than me, and without any trick.

    Hello and thank you all
    @fdservices & @WonderWoofy :
    In fact, I forgot to mentionned swappiness, just tought about mentionneing the swap priority which act at a very different level is only revelevant when you ahve several swap files.
    I have already modified that setting since quite a long time... and it indeed makes the system behaviour so much better.
    Honestly, I could do with it... that's what I am doing since a few months in fact, and it really largely improved the user experience.
    Still, the setting only makes swapping unlikely, but does not forbid it.
    @WonderWoofy & @lucke :
    You may be right, I could satisfy with swapiness...
    Still, my feeling is that swap at run-time is mostly a remeniscence of the time where having several megabytes of RAM was juste a fantasm. At that time, at least for some intensive operations, simulating more RAM thansk to the cheaper & slower disk capacity was really decisive for a good user experience... and to allow some operations like some huge compilations. My feeling is that today, with our Gigabytes of RAM on our desktop/laptop, the need is much lower. In fact a swap is probably counter-productive for SSD for example (fast, yes, but swap is by nature something you write quite often, reducing teh SSD lifetime significantly). And simulating extra RAM is also counter-productive with applications such as web browsers which handle large amount of memory to handle cache themselves; it causes memory pressure, hence trigger swapping and machien slowdown instead of trigerring their pseudo-smart memory cleaning mechanisms. Last but not least, it does not encourage any improvement on application memory needs and rationalisation.
    In fact, unless when I compile huge programs, or on really-limited-memory (embedded) systems, or eventually if swap can be hosted on significantly faster-than-storage disks, I feel that swapping does not really improve the user experience and system performance... and in contrary reduces them by having to handle swapping on and off memory & cache pages.
    SO that's why I want to try. It's OK if I fail, swappinees fixes most my user experience issue, but I try to solve my more "theorical" issue as well.
    And honestly, it is also to lean & play a bit with systemd as well.
    More to come, I have things partially working now. Partially for now, and maybe perfectly with your help ?

How do I fix it? I run my Itnues from this external and now my library is gone. Luckily I have it saved somewhere else, which is not a problem, but I won't be able to write to this HD for right now. I can't see an option to give those permission back.

    Unless what you have to transfer is enormous, skip the external HD altogether and use a USB flash drive; you can get them with capacities to 128GB. Format the flash drive as FAT32 or ExFAT as LowLuster suggests so it can be read and written to on both PC's and your Mac.

  • Is there a compatibility guide for SSDs in the late 2011 macbook pro model?

    Is there a compatibility guide for SSDs in the late 2011 macbook pro model? I'm looking to purchase a 15.4" Late 2011 Macbook pro and was looking a SATA3 SSD that was supported (outside of the ones provided by Apple). Does anyone have any success stories they wish to share? I assume the problem with secondary bay and SATA3 has still not been resolved.

    Have you looked at the OWC web site?  They specialize in Mac peripherals and they have a good line of SSDs and secondary bays as well.  My experience with them has been good but I am not ready for SSDs.  For my needs the cost/benefits are not there.
    Ciao.

  • Good Hardrive For Macbook

    does anyone know of a hardrive for the macbook maybe 100GB or 120GB? and sometihng not to expensive? and maybe a good brand for 1GB memory upgrades? thanks for the help in advance!

    Any 2.5" SATA hard drive in that size range isn't going to be CHEAP...but make sure that the drive is 5400RPM to be safe, as that's what's listed for the 60 and 80 gig drives. Beyond that...can't really say, presumably all should go well if the new drive "fits the bill" in terms of specs and whatnot, but keep your original around just in case.
    If all else fails I have had people say that a local apple retail store actually installed/upgraded the drive in store...so that may be another option if you want to know you're getting something that'll work.
    In terms of memory, there are some manufacturer's out there that actually brand their memory as "apple memory". OCZ is one of them, and I have had a lot of people say they've had luck with Crucial SO-DIMM's. Again, as long as they're 667MHz PC2-5300 SO-DIMM modules you're more then free to give 'em a shot...but if you start to have what seem to be memory issues there's not much apple'll do to back you up.

  • SQL Server NTFS allocation unit size for SSD disk

    Hi,
    I have read that the recommended NTFS allocation unit size for SQL Server generally is 64 kb since data pages are 8 kb and SQL Server usually reads pages in extents which are 8 pages = 64 kb.
    Wanted to check if this is true also for SSD disks or if it only applies to spinning disks?
    Also would it make more sense to use an 8 kb size if wanting to optimize the writes rather than reads?
    Please provide some additional info or reference instead of just a yes or no :)
    Thanks!

    Ok thanks for clarifying that.
    I did a test using SQLIO comparing 4kb with 64kb when using 8kb vs 64kb writes/reads.
