Swapping administrator name = technical problems
this is a kind of a unique multi question question.
first, the story. I damaged the top casing of my friends brand new powerbook computer, and was obliged to buy it from him, becoming the new owner. yesterday I had the top case replaced with a brand new one. all good. a brand new computer for me. time to officially change the administrator/user info to my name and enjoy my new powerbook......
now the problems. I switched the administrator name to my name in system preferences (I never switched names in the previous two weeks I have had it). seemed to work fine. however the house logo still had my friends name. I tried to switch that as well. somehow the programs are now not recognizing me switching the home name to mine. Itunes will not show any of the music. Everything on the desktop did not show up and then turned up in a "desktop" folder under users/my name. The address book will erase all names after each start up. the bottom dock resets itself to settings other then the ones I set after each restart. basically all the info gets lost. why is this? is this because I tried to change the name on the users/house logo? did the "pro" who changed the top case mess up something? why does the house logo go back to my friends name after each restart? Do I need to do some kind of master reset to get everything in my name and working smooth?
I really need it to remember all the info I input. I do not want to have to import my address and songs again. I also really want to have all the user names to be my own.
I hope someone can make sense of this. I can clarify things if you have questions.
Perhaps the system is getting confused with the new owner name and old name. Maybe the best way is to reset the computer with the original discs and then change the names? I'm not sure, that is why I am putting this to discussion.
Strange problems I know, but I am sure there is an easy solution.

Have you changed something on your SharePoint 2007 environment recently before this issue occurred?
This issue may be related to Alternate Access Mappings settings like the following similar post, if you have configured AAM, you can check if this issue happened to some URLs, if it's the case, please add the problematic URLs as a Publish URLs for the default
zone for your web application, and also add these URLs as trusted locations, then check results again.
If above doesn't work, please enable ULS log on verbose level to get more useful log errors which time are corresponding to the errors occur.

After a year of no use and a resulting fully discharged battery, the MacBook Pro refuses to recognize the administrator name and password (both). It has system OS X 10.6 which can not be upgraded without the information. How can I reset or reistall the administrator name and password?
Thanks to all who responded. You are all absolutely correct. However, this Ipad was a gift to my wife who was dying of cancer in the hospital and wanted some entertainment. So I started it out with her Apple ID. After she passed away I moved from Sacramento to Austin and eventually proceeded to get the Apple ID changed from my wife's to mine. Meanwhile when she was in the hospital I opened an Itunes account in my name to buy movies for her. That was the first mistake.
Then during the move to Austin I lost track of the IPAD and later found it and tried to use support but could not remember the proper ID. Later the folks at the Apple store helped me create a new and novel Apple ID that was unfortunately unlike any other.
The botom line is that I am stuck with three Apple IDs and three passwords. I am told by Apple there is nothing they can do about this as IDs cannot be changed or destroyed. I can quit using them or start a new account but when I try to do that the system keeps remembering too many things from the past and resists.
Even if I sold this Ipad and bought a new one, the system memory is still there.
I think the real problem is that destop and laptop computers are totally owned by an individual and that individual can control logins and passwords to his liking. IPADs and similar Apple products are different in that the corporation has built in their own intrusion detection schemes because of the relation to Itunes.
One thing I thought about is to open a new Itunes account pretendding to be a new customer with my regular Apple ID. Perhaps I could do the same with Apple Support.

Error entering administrator name & password to make System Prefs changes
I have been running Leopard with just fine but encountered this new problem today. I wanted to create a "Guest" account, but when I clicked on the lock in the System Preferences: Users screen to add that option, I typde in my administrator name & password and got this error:
"Sorry, you entered an invalid username or password. Please try again."
It accepts my password when logging in, for keychain access, etc... But I'm not able to unlock & make changes with the same username & password. I tried logging in to make the changes in System Preferences under another user who is also an admin, but I got the same error message using that user's name & password.
This is a new problem for me. I unlocked & added a user account for my kids with no problems just last week and haven't made any changes to my password or account name since then.
Any thoughts on how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!I'm having a similar problem, since the 10.5.1 upgrade (I downloaded the 110MB version, as Apple readily admits that there are problems when using Software Update for upgrades).
I ran Disk Utility to repair permissions on my boot drive, and it prompted me for my administrator password (something that I've only had to do since the upgrade to 10.5). This time, the user name was blank (usually it fills in the user name with the account name I'm logged in under). I entered the information, and got the error. Double checked everything, and still no luck. After a third attempt, I was told I had to wait a while before trying again.
I'm hoping there's some simple fix or something I can easily to type in. I don't want to wait a few more weeks for Apple to release another patch, and I don't want to have to step back to an even more unstable version so I can use Disk Utility.

Events replace rolls (if your rolls are named - NOT the default rollxxx name - they will come across as is - to me events are rolls with much more capability and a new name - some people are VERY putoff by the change (but most love it) for reasons that I simply do not comprehend
10) What is the effective (or advised) maximum library size? I've probably got over 60GB of images in my libraries now, with 20,000 images or so. If 7 can readily digest them (and preserve all my albums, etc.), then I'd love to combine them into one, unless that will kill performance, make the database unstable, drive backups into interminable waits, etc.
The advertised max is 250,000 photos - I have about the same number of photos as you in about 1/3 the space - there are a few users here with libararies your size. With iPhoto Library Manager it is easy to maintain multiple libraries if you choose

Administrator name and password
I can't download any new software or make any changes on my computer because that requires an administrator name and password. Somehow, I am only a standard user on my computer and I am the only account on the computer (besides system administrator (root). I've used my install disc multiple times to change my password, but that doesn't work when I enter my user name and the new password when the computer asks for an administrator name and password. It just says password is invalid and administrator name and password is required. any warranty and technical support has expired and I'm at a loss at what to do. I really need to download new software and need to somehow recover the original administrator name and password and change my standard user account to an administrator account. I'd appreciate any help or advice!

We have a lab full of PowerPC G5 Towers running 10.5 off a PowerPC G5 tower running 10.5 Server. We are using Open Directory and AFP to allow students to login to Network Accounts from Local Workstations. After Archive and Installing two of the G5 Machines and updating them, We encountered the error "Type an Administrator Name and Password to allow lpadmin to make changes." and it freezes up and doesn't allow us to enter the password or username or even move the mouse.
To use the solution in the link above in this case, here's one way to go about things:
- Restart while holding down command and s at the same time to boot into single-user mode.
- Use the following commands to mount the filesystem (these are also listed on the screen when you start up):
$ /sbin/fsck -fy
$ /sbin/mount -uw /
- You're going to need the root password, so if you haven't already set one, type 'passwd', hit return, and set one.
- Load Directory Services:
$ launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
- Run the command mentioned in that other post, entering your root password when prompted:
$ dseditgroup -o edit -p -a admin -t group _lpadmin
- You may need to run it twice, because the first time it may say something about upgrading your groups or something like that.
I hope that helps. It worked for me on multiple machines affected by this problem.

OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5 and Server 2.2.2 on both Mac Mini Server and Macbook Pro. They are on the same WiFi network.
I want to use the MBP to manage the Server on Mac Mini Server and use the MacMiniServer to provide Caching Service for my MBP, iPad and iPhone.
The problem:
From the MBP Server app, it asks me the Host Name, Administrator Name and Administrator Password. I cannot get it right. Where can I find it from the Mac Mini Server?
What elese shoudl I do / learn?Run Server.app on the host itself.
Click on the line on the left for the server itself (probably top or second down)
Click on the 'settings' tab.
Make sure you have 'Enable screen sharing and remote management' ticked.
If it's already ticked ...
Find the address you're using for the 'Host' field and try
ping [thataddress]
as a command in the Terminal on the client computer. Do you get numbers up, or errors ?
Use control-c to quit from the 'ping' command. -

I adopted my friend's iMac, and I'd like to change the Administrator name. I went to Accounts, and put in the password, but wasn't sure if I should just change it there, where it says Name, or not. I don't want to cause any serious problems that will log me out or something, so I thought I'd ask first.
ThanksMichael answers your question. But I recommend wiping the hard drive and reinstalling the OS and all applications from the original install discs. With a used Mac there's no way of knowing what haxies, security holes, or other junk you don't know about might have been left on it by a previous owner. Even a friend you trust could have inadvertently opened up security holes that neither of you are aware of. Wiping and reinstalling is just good security practice and it will also allow you to set what ever admin and other user account names and passwords you want.

OS Snow Leopard 10.6 is installed; including all updates, the computer I currently use is Mac Pro. So I have some kind of technical problems (like slow data processing) with Leopard during the working in the local network. (Windows network).
During the attempt to connect with network sharing (the computer is in the network) automounter process took approximately one minute.
Later on, after the automounter process is finished it’s working quite normally over remote computer, but when you try to automount again, everything starts from the very beginning.
The internet is working very well, it’s connected with domain, and everything is adjusted.
I use to ask our system administrator; maybe it is necessary to activate the some kind of protocol?
The OS Tiger is installed on the second hard disk, and it’s working well.
Maybe someone could help me, I try to find the similar problems, but I could not find them.

First, thanks for the tips. I was starting to suspect the network might be an issue (bad nic, bad router, something).
But netstat -s was showing an average of about .15% packet loss. For a web server that seems to be a pretty good value so I'm not sure.
I did, however, ask someone else to look at the server because I'd spent the whole week on just server performance and was going out of my mind. This second pair of eyes really helped as he found that the pagefile for the server was set at 2mb!? Still trying to figure out how that happened. But we increased the pagefile to a much better value. There wasn't an immediate change in performance, but over time the server appears to have begun to respond better.
Occasionally I still get these 'lag spikes' but nowhere near what they were and the delay is much smaller as well, which is probably being caused by something else entirely (like bad programming on my part, hah). -
I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule to use with my Mac running latest Maverics. After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups from my small driveand it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?
I overcame the permissions by allowing both paths to have read and write access to anyone but that didnt solve it until I copied it into the DATA directory which I created on the Airport Time Capsule.
I had already discovered the TIME MACHINE How to transfer backups but I am struggling still with the item and cannot currently get it to work. My setup seems to have created a wireless link to my router which is what I wanted and in that set up there are three options. I have simply gone for the extension of my network. I ignored the other option there which I cannot remember something like DNS? That may be the problem becasuse when I remove the Ethernet connector it just doesnt go anywhere.
I have also found I cannot update my TIME MACHINE software (currently 1.3) as although Apple tell me I should be able to set backups hourly daily or weekly I have only ever been able to run it hourly when i would prefer longer intervals so thought an update might be necssary.
Also tried to get an update for my Airport Utility (Currently 6.3.2 but cannot find one even though I have read there might be one available and again this might be the problem.
Have reset the Time Capsule now about a dozen times.
Following the instructions and trying to copy my existing backup it suggests you need to copy it to the root directory but that is when I get some sort of security issue and I found I could only get it to accept if I dragged my .backupdb to the DATA directory on the Time Capsule. I dont even know if I do this it will work when I come to use it.
I therefore found your reply of no more help than i had discovered but I hope you return to read this note because I really do need some help.
I am intending starting again in the next couple of days and fully documenting what I do and what I see and then as I suspect it will be no different and I will then seek an appointment at the Apple Store in Trafford Centre and if that proves unsuccessful then I still have time to return and become a dissatisfied customer with Apple for the first time in a long experience with Apple. I have noticed frightening notes on the conversations which point to problems of Mavericks working with Airport Time Machine!! So in the end it might not be me doing anything wrong. Mail: No "reveal in folder" option when searching messages.
When performing a search in Mail under Snow Leopard, there was a button that would reveal a selected message in it's mailbox. That seems to be gone in Lion. Am I missing something or is this yet another feature loss?
