My laptop has recently stooped working so I'm getting a new one. However, I have over 2,000 songs downloaded onto my Ipod. How do I transfer these onto my new computer.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up rather than relying on your iPod. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

I'm about to swap computers with a buddy of mine. I have this black macbook and he has the new 15 inch macbook pro. I have been backing up with Time Machine since it came out. He is going to restore his computer to the way it was when it came in the box. By booting to the OS X Leopard DVD. Then doing an erase and install. Then giving it to me. Im going to do vice versa and give this to him. When i get the MB Pro im going to turn it on and what should i do from that point to get the new MB Pro to be exactly like the one i have now? Using time machine. What should i expect while doing this also? Thank you so much.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
If your friend does an +Erase and Install,+ and nothing else, when you start it up, the first thing it will do is ask if you already have a Mac, and give you the opportunity to "transfer" from it directly, or from it's TM backups. See the *Erase, Install, & Migrate* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine *User Tip,* also at the top of the Leopard Time Machine forum.
Be sure to note the caution towards the end; turn TM off immediately, and make sure everything has transferred properly. If you have 3rd-party apps that used installers, they may have put some things in the /Library folder that didn't get moved, including purchase keys.
When you do turn TM on, you may get a prompt asking whether you want to "continue" the backups from the old Mac. This is new to Snow Leopard, and if you get it, TM will probably do a lengthy "deep traversal" and back-up the new version of OSX, or at least the differences.
But it may simply do a new, full backup instead. If it decides to, you cannot stop it. In that case, your best bet may be to just erase your TM drive and let it start fresh.
Being a new feature, not many folks have used it yet, and I don't think there's been a case here like yours, so we're not entirely sure what it will do. TM is still a bit quirky in this area, unfortunately, so let us know what happens.
Also note that you cannot do a full system restore from your backups in this case; the new Mac Pro will not run with the older version of OSX.
*EDIT: V.K. is correct: I missed that it will have Leopard installed, not Snow Leopard. Sorry.*

Swapping computers using PCI-GPIB

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am currently running a 1998 PCI-GPIB card using Labview 6.i on a Windows 2000 machine. I want to transfer this card onto a machine running Labview 7.1 on Windows XP. Your drivers page indicates that this can be done with the NI-488.2 v 2.2 driver.
The Windows 2000 PC has a suite of programs that we may need to fall back on if I fail to develop the applications fast enough on the Windows XP PC. Should we need to, is it possible to plug the card back into the Windows 2000 pc and expect it to work? Or does the driver need to be reinstalled in reinitialise the card.

You can safely use the PCI-GPIB card in the Windows XP system with the 2.2 driver and if it needs to be done, you can plug this card back into the Windows 2000 PC and it should work without you having to reinstall the driver (I am assuming you have driver version 1.7 or 2.2 installed). So please feel free to switch back and forth between the two computers!

? about swapping computers

I have 2, late 2009 iMacs; 1 at my office and 1 at home. The one at the office still has Snow Leopard (which I learned Mac on & love); the one at home has Mavericks, which is okay. My issue is the home/Mavericks iMac is slow-I only have 4GB of memory in it, but could upgrade to 8.
However, while the office iMac also only has 4 Gigs of memory, it can be upgraded to 16.......
What I'm thinking of doing is copying both machine to a partitioned EHD, then wiping both clean, swapping them, then reinstalling all the home stuff with Mavericks and upgrading it to the 16 Gigs, and taking the other one to the office and reinstalling everything with Snow Leopard on it, and maybe upgrading it to 8 Gigs, just because.
Is this a feasible scenario, or is there something I should be wary of doing this?

How to swap computers with Logic

I bought Logic as version 3 years ago. Since then I've bought all the updates. Now I want to sell my Mac G4 DP 1GHz MDD and buy a mac laptop instead.
HOw do I install Logic on the new laptop? Do I have to install from version 3 and then all the updates? I don't have all the versions as I had to send my version 5 back.

I also installed the updage without any problems. However, another way is to do this if you want to save all your preferences is to save the Logic folder to something, even a DVD, and then drag it to your Applications folder. I had to do this before and it worked fine as well. Cheers.

Swapping computers with the setup info

When I set up my Airport Extreme Base Station I had attached it to a Dell running Windows XP. That desktop crapped out recently and the Base Station continues to broadcast the wireless signal just fine. However, I realize that in order to update the software, I am going to need to hook it up to a computer. I plan to sub in a Dell laptop running XP. I know I should run the ethernet cable that was attached to the dead desktop to the laptop, but should I install the extreme express software on the laptop first, and once it is hooked up, will it read the configuration already on the base station? In other words, somebody walk me through this. Right now I have a wireless signal being broadcast through my house. I don't want to screw that up.

It doesn't matter when you install the AirPort utility, but it will need to be installed before you can administer the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). Just use the installation CD that came with your base station to install the utility.

Swapping users between a desktop and a laptop

hi folks. i'm going out of town working for a month. while i'm gone i want to use my wife's ibook and let her use my office desktop mac.
what is the best way to "swap" the users between the two? i would like her to be able to sit down at the desktop mac and have all her settings, docs, etc. just the way she has them on the laptop, and vice versa for me on her ibook. most of the apps are the same.
do i completely wipe both drives? or can i just swap certain files? can i do it with migration assistant?
i can't find anything by searching here or with google, since the "swap file" is something specific and not what i'm looking for.

What I would do is create a new user on each machine. Now just copy files from one machine to another, e.g. from the old user on machine A to the new user on machine B, and from the older user on machine B to the new user on machine A. There are many "sync" applications that can help you automate this process (look on versiontracker).
When you get home, just "sync" again, and presto, you're ready to swap computers.
This is basically a variant of what I do every time I go on a trip. In my situation there is no second user, but there are two computers and I want the portable to take on all the characteristics of my desktop machine at the moment I am about to walk out the door.

De-Authorise all computers

I have already used this option in iTunes once this year, and I am now at the point where I need to do it again, I have tried using the form on apple's website to ask them to help me with the issue but I haven't heard anything back and I did this about a month ago. Any ideas of another way I can de-authorise a machine i don’t have access to?

ITMS allowed me a second 'deauthorize all', though I did advise them that I am a Apple Certified Tech and am constantly swapping computers, I'm not sure if this made a difference.

IPod over two computers - Question.

My 5G iPod will arrive this week. In preparation I put a DVD on my laptop and sorted it all out so it works on iTunes. However, I use my Windows Computer the most and this has all my music on.
When my 5G comes, how can I upload all my music onto my iPod using my computer and upload the DVD from my laptop on to it? I don't want to transfer all my music onto the laptop.

So is your laptop a Mac ? Then it won't be possible, aka supported by Apple, because you will need to reformat your iPod's HD for use with a PC or a Mac every time you swap computers. However, it is possible to use third-party software that will allow your Mac or PC to read and write to your other-platform formatted iPod. Some experienced posters in the iPod > Connecting to Windows section might be able to tell you more on this.

How do remove wrong username in my iCloud account

It's a bit confusing as there are quite a few levels to the issue. My son (a minor) and I were both using my itunes account (so he could purchase apps and music on my credit card). Now that he is older (but still a minor) i created his own itunes account. My account is Renee and his is Joe. Somehow, when I created his ITunes account, it is connected to mine in that when I log into my itunes account his name and e-mail is listed as the primary and I can't change it. As a result an alias was create with a joe @ me type e-mail.
I set up the second iTunes account exactly as they told me too (almost 2 years ago) and had minimal problems until I set up my iCloud account and especially since we swapped computers. Now we have the following issues all of the time:
1. Our accounts seem to be merged together.
a. My iPhone keeps trying to add his itunes account to mine to send messages, etc.
b. His contacts keep loading on my phone and worse yet, mine to his (we delete them and they come back)
2. His e-mail is listed in my Mail e-mail address but is grayed out so I cannot change it. (I can log out and back in and it won't matter because his @me e-mail is somehow associated with my iCloud account.
3. When we make purchases on either his or my itunes account, he gets the receipts sent to his e-mail.
4. He cannot download songs on his Macbook Pro nor to his iPhone because it says you cannot use two different itunes accounts on the same computer within 90 days (even though I no longer have that computer authorized)

Hello,
The majority of the space that is being used on your iCloud account is being used by the backup of your device. When your device, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage and Backup>Manage Storage. Turn off any applications that you do not need to have backed up, or turn off backup in general in Settings>iCloud>Storage and Backup.

How do I move iTunes and content from one PC to another?

I am swapping computers and wondered if it was possible for me to move my iTunes and all the content to a new computer?

You should post in the itunes forum.
You can click support at the top of the page and type "Move itunes library" or similar in the search bar.
Since you make no mention of your computers operating system, I don't know what to suggest.
You can use your backup, migration assistant, external drive, flash drive, dvd, cd's, etc.

How to activate the deactivated App view in itunes

Hi,
I try to sync a new App. It has worked in the past, and I can sync the iphone.
Now, I have bought/downloaded a new app, I see it in iTunes, I want to sync it, but ...
The Apps view is frozen/deactivated: foggy vew, I cannot activate/deactivate any button, I cannot click nor move the Apps images on the screen. What is wrong, how can I change that?
The new app is marked for synchronisation and the image of the App shows up in the display for the iPhone => it looks as if it has been synchronized already, but if I switch on the iphone (or reboot it), it shows the old state without the App.
Any comments most wellcome.

I've had that view when swapping computers that I synch my iphone to. Are you able to synch music, photos etc. to the device?
You may get the message this device is synched with another iTunes library, do you want to synch with this one instead (or whatever words), and may have to reinstall things to get it to work again.
I assume you've tried re-setting the phone.

Slow logins to domain, several event ID errors (group policy, netlogon, NTP errors)

We have a laptop user who was experiencing slow logons in a remote office.   (Remote office has 100 users, only 1 is reporting the issue). Helpdesk swapped computers to give the user brand new hardware.   The new laptop worked
fine while in the IT department in the main office, the user returned to their desk in their remote office after replacing the laptop and logged in and experienced the same slow logon issues as the older laptop.
Logons take up to 45 mins to process. (Login script hangs and does not process). During the process, you can check IPConfig and it received the proper DNS settings. you can ping the authenticating server by name. We have scanning
on our local copiers setup to scan to the users desktop, and this errors out. DNS on the AD controller shows the proper IP address for the machine and you can ping the machine by name.
System Event log is loaded with errors:
Event ID 5719 - Netlogon, computer not able to setup a secure session with a domain controller in the domain
Event ID 1129 - Group Policy, processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity
Event ID 129 - Time Service, NTP Client was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source
Event ID 5783 - NetLogon, The session setup to the WIndows NT or 2000 domain controller (xxx) for the domain is not responsive. RPC call cancelled.   (NOTE - you can ping this domain controller by name and by IP with no issues)
Event ID 130 - Time-Service, NTP client unable to set a domain peer
All these seem to point to RPC errors timing out because they cannot communicate to the network resources. The problem happens on wired or wireless connections. We had the user move to a different network connection (one we know is working for
another user) the problem persists.   The problem was on the original computer and continues to happen even after replacing the hardware with a brand new laptop.
I have tried running the following hotfix. Which does not resolve the issue:
http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2459530 which technically this shouldn't be an issue because we use DHCP off the 2003 AD domain controller.
I have checked the domain controller, AD Replication is processing with no issues. DNS is working. The local DHCP server has no issues or events related to this account and neither does the local DNS server or the authenticating server (which
is in another remote office).

How do I access a library already on an external drive, from a new computer?

I moved my library from an old hard drive onto a larger external drive, following the online instructions and then continued to use the old machine to access the library. I now want to swap computers completely (the library can stay where it is) but am baffled by how to do this.
Looking at the folders on the external drive there are noi library files just media filders and files.
I've ensured that the new laptop sees the external drive as it was (ie its ths G drive on old and new machines).
I have pointed iTunes at the relevent folder
I have deauthorised everything and then authorised the new laptop
When I open iTunes I have nothing....
The helpdesk are trying.....
Old machine was XP, new machine is W7
HELP!

The library file is still on the old computer in the iTunes folder.
Move the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.
