Swapping Final Cut from desktop to laptop

I have Final Cut Express HD on my desktop and would like to put it on my laptop instead. I bought it a long time ago and no longer have the disks. I was hoping to delete it from my desktop and find a link online so that I could download the same edition on my laptop and then use my already registered serial number. I have done a similar thing with Adobe so I'm hoping it is possible here too.

Without the disc you stand little chance of copying it across as there are numerous hidden files scattered all over.
You could try Migration Assistant  but whatever you do, don't delete it as you will probably lose it forever.
There is no place you can legally download it.
Try eBay etc. to see if you can find a cheap copy but be aware that it may not work properly on more modern computers with the latest OS.

  • Transferring itunes from desktop yo laptop using usb stick?

I am currently trying to move my itunes music from desktop to laptop using usb stick, i can get the music onto the usb stick from my desktop then try to cut and paste it to itunes music folder but it dosent show up in itunes itself, what am i doing wrong?

Paste it into another location on the laptop, and then drag it from there into the open iTunes window. iTunes uses a database to determine what's in the library instead of looking at the content of the iTunes Music folder.

  • How do I move PSE 9 from desktop to laptop after I install new PSE11?

Just received PSE 11,  want it on my desktop and then move PSE 9 from desktop to laptop?  It there a sequence that will prevent problems?

First make a full backup in PSE 9 using the organizer's backup command, then install PSE 9 on the laptop and restore the backup there. If all is well, you can then deactivate PSE 9 on the desktop if you don't want it there anymore (not required, unless you've already installed it on a third computer). When you install PSE 11 it should find and update your catalog on that for you.
If you don't use organizer, it doesn't really matter how you do it.

  • I have an academic version of Final Cut Studio on my laptop and recently purchased the most recent Full version of Final Cut Studio. Do I need to uninstall the academic version before installing the new version?

I have an academic version of Final Cut Studio on my laptop and recently purchased the most recent Full version of Final Cut Studio. Do I need to uninstall the academic version before installing the new version? I ask because this is not an upgrade, but a completely new version.

I'm with Jim on this.  It always seems to work out better if you do not install over another version.  You can use this app (freeware - thanks to Jon Chappel) to completely remove ALL Final Cut Studio apps and components: http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
Once that's done, install your newly purchased version.

  • How do I access photos and music from desktop to laptop

I have a desktop Mac Pro desktop and will be purchasing a new Macbook Pro for traveling.  I use Final Cut Pro and will need to access IPhoto and  ITunes currently stored on the hard drive of my Mac Pro desktop.
One idea I had was loading the music and photo programs on a portable hard drive that I can carry with me.
1.May I move those programs off my hard drive?  I know some programs ie FCP, will only load on my internal hard drive.
    2. Are there any other ways to access those programs from my desktop?
    Thanks
    Sandra

  • Moving iWeb from desktop to laptop

I need to transition iWeb from my desktop iMac to my Macbook as I'm hitting the road for a few months. Ideally I'd like to be able to open a synced version of iWeb on both machines that let me use either to access and update the same website...
But for now, I just want to drag the right files over to my laptop so I can open iWeb and hit the ground running. Anyone have the right answer? Thanks.

If you have a .Mac account you can place the Domain file on your iDisk. When you wanna work with your web site you just open your iDisk and double click on the file. This way you can work on both your desktop and laptop with the site and you don't risk to lose your thumbdrive with the file in it.

  • HT202389 What is the price to upgrade Final Cut from v7 to v10

A nice simple question (to which i can't find an answer on the web): What is the cost of the upgrade from Final Cut 7 to Final Cut Pro X?

You can decide whether or not you like FCP X very easily and at no cost.

  • Moving library from desktop to laptop

I have i-Tunes 7 on both my desktop and laptop; but my main library is on my desktop. I want to be able to move my library from the desktop pc to the laptop, INCLUDING playlists etc. I don't mind replacing the laptop library with the desktop library, as I can then re-import the tunes that were on the laptop library into it. Can you tell me how best to do this? I have a Lacie external hard drive with which to carry out the move (no DVD burner).
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

  • How can I transfer iLife and Final cut from my iMac to my Macbook Pro?

I have Final Cut and iLife on my iMac and just bought a Macbook Pro and I want to transfer it to my Macbook now.  Do I need the disc?  Can I do it without the disc and if so how?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Respecting to iLife, your MacBook should come with iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand preinstalled, so you don't have to transfer iLife from your iMac unless you need iWeb or iDVD.
Respecting to Final Cut, it depends on the version you have. If you have Final Cut Pro X, you have purchased it from the App Store, so you can download it in your MacBook Pro for free. To do it, open App Store > Purchases, and download Final Cut Pro X. If you have an older Final Cut version, I recommend you to install it into your computer using the DVDs where Final Cut Pro came.
If you have to transfer more data, you should consider the option of using Migration Assistant. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4889

  • How do I stop Final Cut from seperating video on timecode breaks?

Working on a dive video which has many start/stops breaking time code and final cut wants to create a new video for each one, how do I stop it from doing that?  I want just one long video, timecode breaks and all.

You can control whether start/stop indicators create individual media files by selecting or deselecting the “Create new clip on Start/Stop” checkbox in the Clip Settings tab of the Log and Capture window.
In the General tab of the User Preferences window, the option you choose from the “On timecode break” pop-up menu determines how timecode breaks affect capture, but the Warn After Capture option is disregarded to avoid capturing media files that contain breaks in the middle of an MPEG-2 GOP.
To choose how Final Cut Pro handles start/stop detection when capturing HDV footage
If you have not already done so, choose Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup, choose HDV from the Format pop-up menu, and then choose an Easy Setup from the Use pop-up menu.
Choose File > Log and Capture (or press Command-8), then click Clip Settings.
Select or deselect the “Create new clip on Start/Stop” checkbox to turn start/stop detection on or off:
Start/Stop detection on: When the checkbox is selected, a new media file and corresponding clip are created each time Final Cut Pro detects start/stop indicators in the incoming HDV stream.
Start/Stop detection off: When the checkbox is deselected, one continuous media file and corresponding clip are created, and start/stop indicators are ignored.
Note: The option to turn off start/stop detection is not available when capturing footage shot on a JVC HDV camcorder because the nature of the MPEG-2 stream requires creation of a new media file at each start/stop indicator.

  • Move library from desktop to laptop

Trying to move iTunes library from desktop to new laptop so I can sync to my new ITouch

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your second computer is to network it with the first one and copy your iTunes folder across. Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Windows user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
You can also use this method with an external hard drive, you drag the folder from the first computer to the external drive and then from the drive to the second computer.
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • Directions on how to copy files directly from desktop to laptop

Just bought a new Mac Book Pro. I would like to copy only select files from my desktop to laptop. Can I hook the two together via firewire and just copy them or do I need to go the ethernet route and file sharing etc. If ethernet route, is it slow or fast?
    Thanks.
P.S. I don't want to use migration assistant and copy all settings etc. The laptop is for son going off to college and he wants it "clean".

Data such as music will copy perfectly by Drag & Drop. Just slide the items onto the target, 'hover' over folders if you want them to open, and then 'drop', i.e. release the mouse button. If that 'spring open' action is new to you it might take a few goes to end up in the right place; at any time you can move the mouse cursor up into the menubar and release the button – nothing will be copied, and you can try again.
OR you can drop anywhere and tidy up afterwards.

  • Automatically open fcpxml in Final Cut from Safari

I'm trying to get Safari to automatically open a fcpxml from a web server, in Final Cut but I have not been able to get it to work. The file opens in Final Cut if I click on it in Finder, but not when downloaded from a web server with Safari. I've tried setting Content-Type to application/xml or text/xml with a filename ending with .fcpxml  Anyone got a good suggestion to get it to work?

I know that XML is just text... Basically what I'm trying to do is a generate fcpxml files for each video file on a NAS server so when a user clicks on the link in their web browser, the fcpxml is downloaded and opened in Final Cut automatically (if they have the NAS server mounted) . If I download the fcpxml file and double-click on it (or drag it onto Final Cut in Finder), Final Cut opens it just fine

  • Clips randomly won't drop into Final Cut from FCS...

    Hello!
Just curious if anyone else has seen this issue...
    1. The correct media drives ARE mounted on the system
    2. You search for the clips you need
    3. You drag the clip into either the "bin" or "preview" window in Final Cut Pro and it appears to bounce right back into Final Cut Server
We have noticed that if we right click over the clip and "View Original Media", close quicktime after it opens, then drag into Final Cut Pro, it works!
    Any ideas?
    Ryan

nevermind - The user restarted the computer and the issue went away.
