Swapping hard drive into external enclosure

Hello. I just installed a hitachi 160gb hard drive in my macbook. No problems, easy as pie. So I wanted to install the original toshiba 60gb into a usb external enclosure, here's the problem. So the hard drive has a plastic part on it that covers the 40 pins. I don't know how to remove this so I can install the hard drive in the enclosure. There's a couple screws, but I'm a little afraid of taking it apart, and not sure if they are holding it in place. Thanks, Mike

Well I see that's the problem. There are SATA ones
and IDE ones, and I bought an IDE. It's too bad that
advertiser say their item will fit any laptop hard
drive. Thanks. Mike
How did I know that? I made the same mistake buying one off eBay. You need one like this.

  • My motherboard died on hp laptop. i put my hard drive into an enclosure to access data. is it possible/how do i transfer my bookmarks from hard drive to my new computer which is a macbook pro?

hello. my name is brandon. my hp laptop motherboard died 3 days ago. i have put my hard drive into an enclosure to be able to access all my info and files. i have successfully transferred all my files, but I am not sure if, or how i can access all my mozilla bookmarks from my my old hard drive to be able to put onto my new laptop, which is an macbook pro. my bookmarks were crucial to pay bills etc, so any help would be greatly appreciated, brandon

Not familiar with the Mac file structure either but you can transfer the entire content of your Firefox profile replacing entire content of a firefox profile you created on new HD. For me copying over a few files was out of the question all of the files are updated and I wasn't about to reinstall 150+ extensions and set up configurations for everything and to do that for that 20 profiles and .ini file. Except for 3 most didn't have a lot of extensions but it would be rather impossible.
I copied everything from the Mozilla folder down in the user libraries so all my profiles were set, it did something similar for application libraries.

  • Old iMac hard drive to external enclosure

The logic board on my old iMac (20" core duo...2006 model) but the hard drive is ok.  I'd like to put it into an external enclosure but can't get it to fit.
1/  there's an external chip/connector on the side, half way down that blocks it fitting into the enclosure.  I've never seen this on a hard drive before.  What is this and what can I do to it (ie, remove it, ignore it etc)
2/  When it connects, it soon disconnects itself (a mater of seconds).  Does this have anything to do with the chip on the side?
Basically, how can I get this done?
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi John,
It's a 2.5" drive. I would go with a firewire enclosure so you can boot from it. http://www.macsales sells a good one.

  • Can't put hard drive into enclosure

I rencently took out my hard drive (Bay A) out of my 1.6 Ghz G5 tower and when I tried to put the hard drive into the enclosure there are big black screws that are blocking the way. I bought many Phillips Screwdriver, trying to unscrew those 4 black screws and was unsuccessful! What am I suppose to do now?! The harddrive is still connected to the enclosure but I can't put it in!

I can only go by the drive screws that I have unscrewed in the past. The Drive Screws are shown in Figure 6 here

I found that the centre of the screw with the cross-head is metal, but the outer curved dome-shaped piece is plastic. If you insert a small flat-bladed screwdriver or blunt knife, carefully, under the outer edge of the plastic collar, where it touches the drive, it can be lifted up and off, exposing the flat side of the central metal screw - which can then be gripped with needle-nosed pliers, or similar, and turned in the same direction as you would to unscrew it with a screwdriver, anti-clockwise.
If your drive screws are solid metal, including the outer curved collar, then you will have to get someone to help you.
Be of Good Cheer - every screw comes out in the end! (one way or another) Good Luck.

  • Changing external USB hard drive into a FireWire Drive???

I have been reading in some of the other discussions about how it is possible to change a USB external hard drive into a FireWire external hard drive. Is this true ??? I recently pruchased an external USB hard drive only to now find out that I cannot use it to boot from. Apparently OSX will only boot from a FireWire drive ??? Is there some way to change my current external USB hard drive into a FireWire compatible drive or do I have to purchase a FireWire drive ??? Thanks.

All I can remember was an internal USB/firewire hub (for PCs, by the way), I haven't seen external adapters like cables; but you may simply ask in your local computer store about.
Yes, you can boot only from firewire drives. I was told that it is possible the new Intel Macs are able to boot from USB drives, but haven't had the time to verify this so far.
A possible solution may be to remove the harddisk from the USB enclosure and put it into a firewire case. This should work and you just need to buy the firewire case without the need for another harddisk. Just ensure that the case is able to take your harddrive (2.5" / 3.5" drives, connection interface).

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically importing songs I listen to from my external hard drive into the music library?

    Mac OS X: Double-Clicking a File Opens the Wrong Application - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2291
-= Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind (written with reference to OSX 10.4 but may not have changed) =-
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more.  Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

I want to take files from my PC (using a Seagate external hard drive) then plug this Seagate External hard drive into my Mac Book Pro and move the files from the Seagate External Hard drive onto my Time Capsule. I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.

    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.  If they are not a multiple CD set you still need to make sure the disc number fields are set correctly or all empty.

  • How can I add media from an external hard drive into Premiere Elements? Please answer.

Alright, so I have looked all over the website and the way adobe's frequently asked questions about adding media did nothing for me. I am editing a large full length video in premiere elements 13 and so I would like to add media from my external hard drive and edit from that location. Is that possible? Because I do not have enough space on my laptop to keep hundreds and hundreds of GB of videos on my internal hard drive. I have looked on how to add media from the hard drive location and adobe says to add it using the files and folders tab, but when I select it to add it, it says I need to use the Video Importer. So I go to use the video importer and have no way of figuring out how to select my hard drive. Any ideas?

Thank you for the follow up with the information
it is a MacBook pro retina . OS X Operating system. External hard drive is connected by the USB cable. fat32.
It is my understanding, whether you have Premiere Elements on Windows or Mac, if you have files on an external hard drive,  you do not select
Add Media and head for a choice that includes Video Importer. Instead, you select Add Media/Files and Folders and navigate to the external hard drive to select your file(s) for import into the project.
But, you seem to be saying that when you do you are met with a message to use the Video Importer. Does the message give you any other related information on why you are being detoured to Video Importer since Video Importer does not import from an external hard drive for me or you. It does for me using Add Media to get the files from my external hard drive into a project.  I am strictly an Elements Windows user, so my Mac information is from what I have read. Based on that...
    1. Please evaluate the format of your external hard drive. Please review the following if you have not considered this point before.
    http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-an-external-hard-drive-for-use-with-os-x/
There are many online articles on this matter which would point you away from Fat32 as the format for a external hard drive Mac.
    2. From what you wrote, you are not dealing with a DVD drive so I see no way to implicate one of them in this issue. You are dealing with an
USB external hard drive and not a USB external DVD/CD drive. Correct?
    Please review and consider.
We will be watch for further news from you.
    Thank you.

  • How to proceed on transferring the content of an external hard drive into the time capsule.

I just bought a new MBP and a 2T time capsule but i don’t know how to proceed on transferring the content of an old external hard drive into the brand new time capsule.
The old external hard drive is a carbon copy of another external HD which was my time machine backup but unfortunately someone stole it from me…  so I was thinking about transferring the content from the old external hard drive to the time capsule and then set time capsule as the new time machine backup.
Is there anybody whose can give me a hand and tell what is the best to do?
    Thanks
    sb

Configure Time Machine preferences. Be sure to remove the external drive from the Exclude list.

  • I threw out 24 time machine backups from an external hard drive into my desktop trash and now I can't empty my trash.

I threw out 24 time machine backups from an external hard drive into my IMac desktop trash and now I can't empty my trash.

Since you didn't mention what type of error message you were seeing, I'm going to guess on what is happening.
I'm guessing that since you threw away Time Machine backups, that Time Machine is probably active on your Mac. There is a chance then that the files you tossed are marked as in use. You can't delete files that are in use.
Try turning Time Machine off, then restart your Mac. Then try deleting them again.
Once done, turn Time Machine back on.

No, and that shouldn't be done with an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule.

  • How to import previous Itunes database from external hard drive into Itunes on new computer

I need to know how to import a previous iTunes data base that is saved onto an external hard drive into the iTunes library on my new computer

There's only one way to do this.
Copy the iPhoto Library from the old machine to the Pictures Folder on the new machine. You have to copy it as a single item. Then open it, don't import it.

  • PSE-10 how do I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer

Can I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer? Under Get Photos, I select import  from folders/files but after browsing to the external hard drive the copy option is disabled/greyed out. I there a method to import and copy?

That would be mounted as an internal drive and hence the corresponding option is not checked during Import.
Once you import the media form this drive, you can select all and go for File >> Copy/Move files option and copy them wherever you want to.
    Hope this helps
    Thanks
