Swapping images that have image maps

Using RoboHelp 8, I'm embedding images and adding half a dozen image map shapes with links to distant topics in my help project. Every time I modify an image, it seems I have to swap it out with the image I put in previously (unlike, say, in InDesign, where you can create an automatically updating link to an image). And every time I delete the image, the maps disappear and need to be re-created.
1. Is there a way to link images in RoboHelp to avoid the manual delete and replacement?
2. Is there a way to store image maps so they needn't be re-created every time their underlying image is replaced?
Thanks much.

Rick,
Sorry, some weirdness happened and my last post got posted before I finished.
Here's a more detailed scenario.
I open Microsoft Visio and create SampleImage. I save it as a gif to my RoboDrawings folder. Now, in the RoboDrawings folder, there is an image called SampleImage.gif.
I quit Microsoft Visio.
I open RoboHelp and create a project in which a topic is called SampleTopic.
I insert an image, go to the RoboDrawings folder and select SampleImage.gif.
I create a few image maps linking to various other topics.
I save everything, generate html help and close down RoboHelp.
Now I open Microsoft Visio again, open SampleImage and change it drastically without resizing anything.
I save my Visio drawing under the same name, perform a Save As and go to the RoboDrawings folder to save the image as SampleImage.gif. I get a message warning me a file of the same name exists, and I choose to overwrite it, eliminating the old file.
I shut down Visio.
I open RoboHelp, view SampleTopic and the old image is there with image maps in place. I generate html help again, and the old image is still there with its maps in place.
Without deleting the old image in the SampleTopic and manually inserting the new one (same name, though), how do I get RoboHelp to acknowledge that the image has been updated?

  • Is there a way to import images that have been edited and assign them to the original?

I am transitioning to mac and aperture. Is there a way to import images that have been edited and assign them to the original? I have 10,000 originals and about 2,000 edited images. The originals are named img_XXXX and anything modified img_XXXX_modified. I would like to be able to import the originals and then import the edited versions and assign them to the original masters. Instead of starting from here and going forward with 12,000 masters, some of which are actual originals and others not. Thanks for the help.

Ah, the vestiges of a destructive workflow! Once you "get" Aperture, (specifically Masters and Versions) you are going to love it, as all of this work goes away - the relationship that you seek to retain is automatic in Aperture; it is simply done differently.
The short answer to your question is EVERY image file that is Imported into Aperture will create a new Master and one Version. Assuming that your images are PSD/TIFF/JPEG that you created in something like Photoshop, then each one that your import will be a new Master. You have many options:
-- Stick the originals in one Project(s) and the edited versions in another Project(s).
-- Stick them all in the same Project(s) and "Stack" them.
But here is the real question: Why are you doing all of this work and what are you trying to accomplish? Seems you are trying to preserve old things that don't need preserving in a non-destructive workflow.
So, what is most valuable to you?
-- The original, out of camera files? (That is, the fear/need to revert.)
-- The edited versions? (That is the hours of work that it took you to get there.)
If the former, import the originals and ignore the edited versions. (Either simply leave them out on disk or import them into their own Projects which you ignore.) Use Aperture to recreate the work you had done previously. This will always give you the ability to revert to the original Master and create as many Versions as you want. This is the best idea if your edits are relatively simple crops and exposure adjustments,
If the latter, then import the edited versions and do as above with the originals. This makes more sense if your work uses lots of layers and, perhaps lots of clone tool type corrections.
Of course, you can do a bit of both.
Others may have better suggestions, but you will find it easy to answer your own question when you understand an image based, as opposed to a file based, non-destructive workflow.
    Good luck!

  • Lines displayed in images that have been "sliced"

Safari displays lines between sections of an image that have been "sliced" where a aprt of the image may be used with linking to other pages of that website or other url's. The header on the following site:
http://www.mcruz.com/MCI-AboutUs.asp and contents pages of this site: http://www.apomessiah.com/guidepost1Summary.asp for a couple of examples.
Is there a way to turn it off???

This sounds as if you would try to import the images a 2nd time.
But you say you  want to develop them.
So make sure that your import dialog is no longer open, and that you access the images from library module, left-hand panel e.g. folders or collections.
Then select one image and go to develop module, e.g. via pressing letter d as shortcut.

  • Automatically mark images that have been exported

    Hi,
i really wished LR had a seperate flag for images that have been exported yet. It would be perfect if LR would set that flag automatically when an image has been exported. Just like in RSP.
An oh, speaking about Rawshooter Premium, we need a REAL BACKGROUND EXPORT STACK just like in RSP.
    Fred

    @ DW Harrison
It should simply be a visual hint (in the grid mode especially. could be a star or just an icon) that reminds you which images (of a collection) have already been exported - in whatever format.
    @Grafin
In fact i _do_ use a color code for this purpose, but it would be nicer if it gets set automatically by LR, not manually my me.

  • Smart collection of images that have been printed

I'd like to create a smart collection of images that have been printed.  Is there any way to do this?  If not, is there a way to search for images that have been printed?
Separately, one my smart collections screens by edit date so that I can find out what I have worked on recently.  However, it also picks up everything I shot and imported recently, even if I haven't edited the images.  Is there any way to filter these out?
I'm using LR 5.3 for Windows.
    Thank you,
    Robert

Here's how I get there.  This filters images that have had Develop adjustments within the last three weeks.

Lightroom does not automatically find images that have been moved within same parent folder/drive...I moved my catalog and photos to shared drive so that all users can access and when I moved photos within parent folder lightroom did not automatically adjust like in video I watched.  I had to manually locate.  Is there a fix for this?

I haven't watched that video, but if you move photos in your operating system ... Lightroom does NOT automatically find these photos. Finding photos that have been moved is NOT a feature of Lightroom. So, there is no fix for this.
You would have to tell Lightroom where the photos are now located, as explained in the link from 99jon
If you must move photos, move them inside of Lightroom, not in your operating system, or better yet — don't move them, and use Lightroom tools such as keywords and other metadata to achieve organization.

  • Photos App and images that have no place data

I am considering moving to the Photos App from iPhoto, but I have a large number of old photos and documents that have no location data. Most were scanned several years ago, such as genealogy records, birth certificates, etc. How does Photos handle these images? Do they appear in Collections and Moments like other images even though they have no location data? Must I assign each some arbitrary location if I want the images to stay together? Should I also alter the "time the image was taken" as well? If not, I assume they will be sorted according to the time the image was added to iPhoto.

Photos without location data will appear in the moments based on the date. If the photos have no capture date, the file creation date will be used.
Must I assign each some arbitrary location if I want the images to stay together?
How are your photos stored now? If the are in iPhoto you could assign places to them and adjust the dates of your scans to group them by date in a meaningful way before migrating the library to Photos.
But photos will also allow you to create albums  or smart albums based on keywords and other tags.  iPhoto events will be mapped to albums.

  • 5 stars not showing up on other computers when importing images that have been worked on. Catalogues settings include write metadata to xmp keywords do show up though

our working group usually one team member imports and completes job in lightroom 5 . All settings on team computers include write metadata to xmp.  Key words show up if another team member adds the images to their catalogue but the 5 stars don't show up.
We use the 5 stars to show images that were worked on and complete.
Would love to sort this issue out as we rely on being able to see the star rating not just keywords.

[Sorry for the delay in getting back.] Of the three files you included in the Dropbox .zip, 2 had no rating, and 1 had a 5-star rating (*research*.dng).  So indeed, the rating didn't get written to those two files and wouldn't show up when they were imported into another catalog.
    A couple of suggestions:
    1. Triple-check that the option Automatically Write Changes Into XMP is set in Catalog Settings > File Handling in everyone's Lightroom.
    2.  After someone sets the rating, check the thumbnail in Library grid mode -- does it have a badge in the upper-right corner indicating the metadata needs to be updated?  If it does, then that means the metadata isn't getting written immediately back to the file:

  • Specify image size on images that have not been uploaded to APEX

    Hello,
I’m an APEX newbie and have written an Employee Directory application in Apex 4.0.2 which allows the user to click an icon on an interactive report to see a photo of the employee on a new screen. The images have not been uploaded to APEX. Picture sizes range from 250x375, 275x275, 455x455, with several other variations of width and height. Clicking the icon does work, in that the photo is displayed. The problem is that the photos are displayed in APEX based on their size, so that the employee whose picture is 455x455 takes up 25% of the screen, whereas the 275x275 picture takes up far less space on the screen. How can I specify that these images should all display as a specific size?
The URL specified in the Column Link section is https://prod.edu:8099/wtlgifs/ocp/#EMPDIR_ID#.jpg, where #EMPDIR_ID# contains the 9-digit ID number associated with a given employee. For example, https://prod.edu:8099/wtlgifs/ocp/123456789.jpg is the URL for the picture of employee 123456789.
Thanks in advance for your help.

"click an icon"—What kind of icon? A thumbnail of the photo? The default IR detail view icon?
The URL specified in the Column Link section is https://prod.edu:8099/wtlgifs/ocp/#EMPDIR_ID#.jpg, where #EMPDIR_ID# contains the 9-digit ID number associated with a given employee. For example, https://prod.edu:8099/wtlgifs/ocp/123456789.jpg is the URL for the picture of employee 123456789.
So does this link just switch the browser location to that of the photo (i.e. after clicking the link the address bar contains <tt>https://prod.edu:8099/wtlgifs/ocp/123456789.jpg</tt>)? If so the photo is not "displayed in APEX based on their size": the browser is simply displaying the photo natively at its actual size. There's nothing you can do to modify this.
To get any control over the photo size you need a different approach, using the IR column link to show either the interactive report or another APEX page.
If I'm misinterpreting this then you're advised to recreate this aspect of the app on apex.oracle.com to give a clearer picture of what's involved.

  • Finding images that have not been tagged?

How can I search/find images in LR4 that have been imported though not tagged?
    Thanks.

There should be a Smart Collection called "Without Keywords" in the Collections Pane of the Library Module. That will automatically contain what you are looking for.
If that isn't there, click on All Photographs then use the Filter Bar>Metadata and filter on Keywords....the top entry (None) will be what you are looking for.

Hello, I was wondering if anybody knows how to find images that you protect while they're in your camera? I have a Canon 5D Mark II, and I can select images to 'lock' or 'protect' .. I use that to mark images that I believe are key images while on a shoot.
With Photo Mechanic I can select 'tagged' images .. and those images I have marked in my camera will be selected.
I've tried to figure out if its something I can find in exif .. and have had no luck.
    Please help!

  • Aperture replaces images with other images that have the same image number

Help! Aperture has started replacing images in recent projects with older images from elsewhere on my hard drive that have the same image number. Obviously I need a better numbering system, but can someone help me figure out why this is happening? I store master files on an external drive and the "replacement" files seem to be coming from identically named images on my local HD or in iPhoto.

I started renaming all of my images when I import them. I'm using referenced images to an external drive, although I still have a bunch of older images stored in the Aperture library under my old numbering system (which was basically whatever image number the camera generated)....need to move them all to the external drive but haven't had time.
So here's the latest problem: Today, Aperture started replacing images in albums (referenced images with unique file names under my new system) with old images even though the file names weren't even remotely close. It also replaced the images with the preview for the old image (230 pixels wide). "Show master" showed me the preview for the old image, not the correct image.
I tried forcing an update to the preview, but it had no effect. The real masters are intact on the external drive, but this is really scaring me. It happens out of the blue, right in front of me...I watch as my images appear to be replaced with random old images in Aperture. It appears to have nothing to do with file names, as I'm now using totally unique file names.

  • Pasting images that have been put onto the clipboard by other applications

I have the following problem. Might be that I am just overlooking something but I haven't found any information or other java programs that would solve this problem.
I want to access the System Clipboard and retrive images copied onto the System Clipboard by an other application (e.g. paint, irfanView, ... ). Copy and pasting works perfectly with Strings or Images I myself copied to the Clipboard, but as soon as I want to access an image from an other application clipboard.getContents(this) returns null as though the Clipboard was empty. (Where clipboard =getToolkit().getSystemClipboard();)
I downloaded a couple of other java applications that handle images (e.g. ImageJ) and found out that those also can't paste images from other sources.
Is there a way to do that? Has anybody found a solution for that or have I really overlooked something, and it's just one of those stupid bugs one never finds by oneself?

    Hi,
this was exactly my problem. With "Copy and pasting works perfectly with Strings or Images I myself copied to the Clipboard" I mean that I copied the Images and Strings from within a Java Application on to the System Clipboard. It didn't work if the image came from another win32 application. I solved the problem by using JNI, reading the images from the clipboard using C++ and then passing an int[] array to the java application.

  • How to import images that have the same name as images already imported

I am trying to import images into LR3.  I have a number of images with duplicate names.  Some of them are duplicate images that I simply have stored in different directories and some are images that are not duplicates but have the same name.  LR3 refuses to import any images that has the name of an image that has already been imported.  Is there anything I can do about this.  If not, it kind of makes the softwares useless to me.
    In hopes of a solution . . .
    --Kenoli

Thanks.  I'm sure making sure all file names are discrete makes sense.  I guess I need to find some kind of bulk re-name utility.
Additionally, I am dealing with a very large set of unorganized images and one of the uses I would like to put LR3 to is to organize the images into directories and get rid of duplicates while inspecting them to make sure that I don't trash differing images with the same names.  One of the challenges is identifying these images so I can re-name them.
I have been working with Apple's Aperture, which doesn't rely simply on the name to identify images since it uses a more complicated algorithm to differentiate images from each other.  It is one thing I really like about Aperture.  What I like about LR3 is that it lets me use actually file directories to store images rather than moving them into its own file system like Aperture does.  I don't like having files locked into a system that is software dependent.
Also, I finally found the checkbox that tells LR to import "duplicates."  I couldn't find it before.  I don't find LR3 as intuitive as I'd like.  I've always had to spend more time figuring out how Adobe software does things than I would like. I've had little luck with Adobe's support site, aside from this forum.
    Thanks for you helpful suggestions.

  • How do you link images that have no link to begin with?

Im working with a file created by someone else.  I have seen this before but there are no links in the links window for a lot of the images that I click.  I have found this can happen when doing a copy/paste of an image from a website, photoshop, etc...  Is there a way to give these images an actual link so I dont have to go through and drop in the actual image and resize it all from scratch to make it fit with the non-linked image?

It's not quite that bad... you can script this. For instance, this oneline script:
    app.selection[0].graphics[0].place(File.openDialog())
operates on a selected image (such as one copy-and-pasted, though it would also work with a properly placed image) and opens a file dialog and lets you select a new image which is then placed in it, preserving the scale. Can't do anything about the crop though.
Does that help? Do you need more automation? Or explanation how to use it?
