Swapping Optic Drive and HD in different iBooks

Hello,
I'm in a dilemma now and have a couple questions for those of you who dare to take apart their iBooks. I have two iBooks (500MHz/20GB/DVD & 800MHz/30GB/Combo) and the 800MHz one has gotten the dreaded logic board problem. I'm not sure if I'm covered under the warranty, but here's what I'm wondering:
Can I take the HD and Combo drive out of the 800MHz and put it in the 500Mhz iBook without causing a problem? I'm almost ready to buy a new MBP, but I'm waiting a little longer for the dust to settle on a few issues, so I just need one iBook to be functioning correctly and I've filled 20GB on the 500MHz so also need the extra 10GB of space.
Thanks!

Instead of trying that, you may want to check out the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program FAQ page. If the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
If you are past the three-year time limit, try calling and asking for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
Swapping out the drives is tricky:

If Apple will agree to fix the 800 MHz iBook, that's your best bet.
Good luck.

  • Swapping optical drives

Hope this is the right spot. I have a ever-falling-further-into-disrepair 867 Mhz 12" g4 Alubook. I recently got a great deal, on a used, in pieces, 1.5 ghz model with broken optical drive. I thought...sweet I'll swap drives and have a killer, newer, faster laptop without buying a macbook (which I'd love).
So I did it, and just put my old HD in (doh!) It didn't recognize any disks when I put them in because the hardware profile was for the 867. I figured okay, I have another HD so I'll put the 867 mhz back together and do a target disk install of leopard on the new laptop and call it good. But now, with the 867 back together it won't recognize any sort of disk put into the computer. In disk utility it will mount and say **gb MATCHITACD (** being whatever size the disk is), but the disk won't actually mount in the Finder.
Did I somehow kill my optical drive, and how?
I could buy a new optical drive for the 1.5, but I'm wondering if it will give me the same problem (ie not recognize disks because of the hardware profile screw up, and if so how can I boot from the drive to install an OS)
Please help. I ordered a new combo drive. It will be a few days. I'm stuck. Can't install OS because I have two PPC's with non working drives and my iMac is Intel so no dice installing onto a APM formatted drive...
    Thanks

okay, an update. I finally got around to sticking an audio disc in and Lo and Behold it reads CD's. Then I noticed something I skipped before in System Profiler

Basically the powerbook sees this the cw 8122 combo drive as a CD-RW drive only rather than a CD-RW plus DVD-ROM drive.
How did this happen? is it a partial hardware failure? Is there any way to reinstall the firmware/driver. I have alread archived and installed, and then completely wiped and reinstalled via firewire.
This should be seeen as the combo drive now.
    Anyone have any ideas?

  • HT1305 how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

how can i turn down the fan rpm that's between the optical drive and hdd in my power mac g5 dual 2.3?

Ok, I saw that error in your logic. A Dual G5 2.3 or even a Dual Core 2.3 does NOT use LCS at all. Its air cooled and if anything if the OP is experiencing this problems could be due to possible heatsink paste drying up. He might have to re-apply MX 7 or Arctic Silver.
The only G5's that use LCS are: G5 dual 2.5 from Late 2004, the G5 Dual 2.7 from Early 2005, and lastly the G5 Quad-Core from Late 2005-end of September 2006.
    Hope this helps.

  • Pull out Optical Drive and add 2nd drive to non server 2010 Mini

Is the internal set up the same on the server and non server 2010 mac mini?
I have a 120GB SSD drive that I would love to install as my boot drive and then take out the optical drive and move the 500GB HDD to that spot. I can put the optical drive in an external case and connect as needed via USB. Is this possible with the NON server Mini?

    Yes.

  • Swapping optical drive for SSD - How to set it up?

I'm going to purchase a Crucial M4 128GB SSD for my Late 2011 13" i7 Macbook Pro. I don't use my optical drive at all, so I figure I may as well swap that out for my current 750GB HDD, and put the SSD in the main harddrive bay. I know full well how to physically install the respective drives, but my confusion comes when cloning the current HD onto the SSD, then moving all your media files (music, movies, documents etc) over to the HD, while keeping your system files and applications on the SSD.
So what I really need, is a PROPER in depth guide from the start of the setup process (First boot after installation of physical drives) detailing how to copy my system files and applications over to the SSD so I can boot from it, while keeping my data & media files on the HD and being able to access them all as I normally would through finder.
Any and all responses are appreciated - I need all the advice i can get!

If you use a cloning software program it will move, actually copy, everything from your original drive to the SSD.
No need to anything after that to get the SSD to boot and have all your programs and data.

  • No more optical drive and windows 8 issue: "Windows cannot be installed on this disk as it has an MBR partition table."

I have an Early 2011 13" MBP going strong with an SSD and original HDD installed in the optical drive. However, having had success with windows 7 on my old HDD I was planning to install Windows 8.1 (from .iso) on my SSD. However, for the past day or so it's been a nightmare.
I tried the official procedure but by editing the bootcamp info.plist so I could boot from USB (you can't install windows from an external optical drive apparently) partitioning as bootcamp wanted too.
I then tried it a number of different ways using disk utility etc and with an empty space
However, I always seem to end up with the error "“Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only installed on GPT disks“
I read some interesting stuff here http://www.royhochstenbach.com/installing-windows-8-1-on-a-2013-mac-pro/
    He points out that
"Windows 7 and 8 in x64 support EFI. Normally if you install Windows on a Mac and use the installation DVD, it boots into regular BIOS mode, thus can be installed on an MBR partition. I tried the same, but since the Mac Pro doesn’t have an optical drive I had to use an external drive. And apparently the Mac boots external optical drives in EFI mode too. The Bootcamp wizard is aware of this, and creates a GPT partition on a non-superdrive Mac but an MBR partition on a superdrive Mac."
This means Bootcamp is essentially making the wrong type of partition?
My real question is? How do I install it windows 8? I'm really on my last legs!
I really don't want to have to open this thing up and reinsert my optical drive as its really really difficult to get out of the enclosure (would probably have to break it).
    A huge thanks in advance!

    Hi,
    Have you tried that suggestion?
You also could use this commands to check and install again:
Inside windows installer, hit Shift+F10 to get a command prompt, then run diskpart and type List disk to displays a list of disks and information about them, such as their size, amount of available free space, whether the disk is a basic or dynamic disk,
and whether the disk uses the master boot record (MBR) or GUID partition table (GPT) partition style.
and then select the target disk. Zap the drive (with the clean command), create GPT table (new gpt), create the GPT-EFI special partitions.
Step-by-step instructions is here for reference:
HOW TO: Use the Diskpart.efi Utility to Create a GUID Partition Table Partition on a Raw Disk in Windows
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297800?wa=wsignin1.0
Then reboot so the firmware finds those partitions and adds the disk to the EFI-native boot order (Windows installer checks this).

  • Swapping OPtical Drive for SSD

I am going to swap my optical drive for an SSD to make everything far more faster. My computer is out of warranty so it won't be affected. I was just wondering what will happen to my existing hard drive when I clone the old hard drive and copy it on to the SSD? Obviously I will make it so my computer boots       my SSD, does my old hard drive act in the same way an external hard drive does? Will I be able to save things on there just as easily as before?
    Thanks

Go talk to Bmer over here
    http://macosg.com/
What he did was move the hard drive to the optical bay and then replaced the boot drive with a SSD with a kit, he can walk you though it all as he's good with SSD's and all it's headaches. The kit also makes the Superdrive a external optical drive.
SSD's make good boot and program drives, but not a good file drive, use the hard drive for that instead.
One of the drawbacks is you can't boot from the OS X install disks or Windows disk or even perhaps not even Linux disks on a external optical drive.
So you'll have to learn all about Carbon Copy Cloner and option bootable clones too.
Download the free MacTracker and find out your SATA, as that can limit your SSD speed and could save you money as you buy the slower older SATA SSD's to match your hardware instead of the higher more expensive ones you can't use anyway.
    Good Luck.

  • Optical drive and hard drive overheating and behaving strangely

    Hi All,
I purchased a MacBook white a few months ago so that I could do some development for the iPhone. I have noticed that after extended use (I just finished installing Windows 7 with Boot Camp) that the optical drive heats up a lot and starts to become unresponsive. I have also noticed that the hard-drive has a similar issue; if I leave the computer on at night doing something (recently, I left it on to format some videos in .mp4 for the iPod Touch) that I can lose files inexplicably. For example, only half of the videos I converted actually showed up on the HDD after it had finished converting all of them.
Are these problems normal? I have managed to circumvent them somewhat by propping the laptop up on an angle so it isn't pressed directly against the table.
The optical drive has now become so unresponsive when hot that I can't do things like install programs from it or copy data.
Any help would be great. Thanks.

As for the taking apart part. I'm not too worried. I've read quite a bit on the subject and watched a couple youtube videos. Also, i've taken a iBook G4 apart to it's core to replace that hard drive and did it without a hitch.
I'm a little unsure about the interface for the Optical Drive. From what i've read the HD is a SATA connection. While, the Optical Drive connection is IDE. Is that normal for one computer to have both?
I found two drives both around $100 for each. One is SATA the other is IDE.

Also, the HD from Newegg that I posted above, runs at 3GB/s. I've remember reading somewhere that my iMac will only run the drive at 1.5GB/s. Is that true?

  • Optical drive and HD not working together in 1.67GHZ 15" G4

I have G4 Al 1.67GHz Powerbook that I am unable to make the Optical drive be recognized when the internal HD is connected. If I put the HD in an ext Firewire enclosure and boot from that, the optical drive works fine. I have tried two Motherboards, different flex cables on both drives, different HD and Optical but no change. I did have to load the HD in a 1Ghz 12inch G4 PB since I do not have a newer OS version than 10.4 and I have seen that the 1.67GHz requires 10.4.2. However, I loaded the drive and upgraded it to 10.4.10 before installing it in the 1.67Ghz. It seems to act like a IDE master/slave conflict. I also found an older optical drive that allows you to set the drive as a Master, slave or for cable select. When I set it to slave, it work just fine. the problem is I would like to use the PB with the original UJ-846 Superdrive it came with.
Is it possible that this is a problem with the software load?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Doug

    Hello.
I have a similar problem on my al powerbook G4 as well. I have a UJ 845e superdrive. It was working just fine, but since I installed Leopard (10.5.1) it stoped working. if i insert a cd or a dvd, it will spin it for a while before rejecting it.
Can you help me with that ???

  • Swap optical drive with SSD for 4k video editing?

I've already swapped the original HD with an SSD 500gb and replaced the optical drive with the original HD as a secondary drive. That has worked nicely for a couple years. But now that I'm doing intense 4k video editing, I want to replace the HD in the optical bay with a 1tb SSD.
My question to you: Will the SSD perform at the same speed in the optical bay as it would in the main bay as a secondary drive? Or is there a speed limitation on the optical bay periphery and as such it's not worth putting a fast drive in there?
What alternative options would you suggest for video editing? My late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.5ghz core i7 with 16gb ram stalls when editing 4k footage off a firewire g-raid. I figured an internal SSD would perform faster and as a double benefit make my files portable without need for an external drive.

  • Setting up new MBP with SSD and optical drive and restoring from Time Capsule

    Hi Everyone-
Sorry if this has been addressed before, but I couldn't find a specific answer by searching.  My last macbook was stolen, but luckily I had everything backed up in my Time Capsule.  I just ordered my new Macbook Pro (13"), 16GB Ram, and a 240GB SSD.  I plan to install everything next week.  My plan is to keep all of my apps and working files on my SSD and use my 2nd hard drive for data storage and possibly my itunes library.  My question is- when setting all of this up, what would be the best way to go about doing this.
1.) Restoring my time machine backup to the original hard drive, move it to the optical drive bay, and then copy over the files that I want on the SSD (after installing the operating system) and delete them off of the origan HD.
2.) Restore my backup to the SSD (once it's installed) and then move files over to the formated original harddrive in the optical bay.  My problem is that there may not be enough room on the 240GB SSD.
3.) Is there a way to do a slective restore through TM and move where I want to keep them?  I think this would be the easiest.
    4.) Other way that I haven't mentioned
Thanks for any help with this question.

I used setup assistant last time when I changed from a 2009 mini to a 2010 mini. It caused some file permission errors that still persist today with iPhoto. I have 2 accounts on my mini, 1 for my wife and 1 for myself, but I store all our photos and videos on the shared folder in order to avoid duplication. But when she imports pictures from her profile and I try to view them full screen, I'm unable to. I have to relaunch iPhoto and repair file permissions if I want to view them properly. I was hoping to avoid this happening again.

  • What is an "optical drive" and what does it do?

My iMac is going back into the shop (an authorized Apple dealer) for the fourth time during the past six weeks.
This time, they feel a new optical drive will fix the problem.
A nightmare of problems...all starting when I took my perfectly working machine for a RAM upgrade from 256 MB to 2 GB, a routine procedure that would take no more than one hour to accomplish I was told. (The machine "is" capable of supporting 2 GB).
Now, six weeks later.......including the RAM upgrade, 2 new logic boards, some kind of cable for the CD drawer, who knows what else......a new optical drive.
During all of this, problems from their work have included "kernel panics," frozen screens, corrupted display, application programs refusing to open, or suddenly quitting, inability to burn CDs from iTunes, CD drawer refusing to open, inability to import tunes to iTunes, "sleep mode" refusing to wake up, and more than I can remember right now.
The fact is, I brought in a machine that never had a problem and they broke it. Right now my questions for them will be: Can all of this really fixed? And can "they" fix it.
So, before it goes back for the fourth time, any comments, thoughts, suggestions any of you might have would be greatly appreciated. Starting with: why a new optical drive?
    Thank you

It would seem that 2 GB of RAM is unsupported in your model. That may be what is causing the problem.
Apple's RAM specifications are based on the largest compatible RAM module available as of the time the computer was released. They are not updated when higher capacity modules become available, and should not be considered when determining what the actual maximum for an older Mac is; the actual limit is 1.5GB for a 17-inch 1GHz iMac G4, and 2.0GB for newer iMac G4s. Some machines have the maximum RAM limited in firmware.
It's more likely that one of the RAM modules may not be working properly, and it should be replaced with another one.

  • What size SSD? Swapping Optical Drive for gen. storage.

I'm planning on buying a smaller SSD and was looking for suggestions on the best size to buy. I have a 13" Late 2011 Macbook Pro, i5. 8gb RAM. 500gb HDD.
What I'm doing is replacing my 500gb HDD and moving that to my optical bay just for general storage. I'm going to set up my new SSD as the boot drive. I want to boost my performance for as little money as possible. I know that I can put 16gb RAM in and get significant improvement, but really want to get rid of the HDD as the boot drive. I'm leaning toward getting either the 44gb or 60gb Mercury Electra 6G SSD.
Any suggestions on what size would be best for what I want or any other suggestions are welcome.

I suggest that you get at least a 240 GB SSD. SATA3, of course!
Larger SSDs are generally much faster, and the price is now dropping (to the point that I have just purchased an 1Tb Crucial M500 SSD for less than 400 €). The price difference between a 64 GB SSD and a 240 GB SSD is now minimal, and you will enjoy more space!
Two years ago, as soon as I purchased my late-2011 MBP, I immediately did the same, moving the original 750Gb HD to the optical bay, and installing a 240Gb Vertex-2 SSD in the main bay as system disk.
The space was just enough, as I have Bootcamp and Windows 7, too, so I divided it half-and-half, and a 128Gb storage is just barely enough for either OSX and Wndows-7 64 bits Pro...
You could survive with a 128 GB SSD if you do not need Bootcamp. Indeed, I always recommend to install Bootcamp and Windows 7 to all Mac owners, so you get the best of the two worlds. I love OSX, but for certain tasks Windows is still vastly superior (using Autocad, for example)...
Curiously, instead, I prefer OSX for Office...

  • Installing second optical drive and the door hangs

This is just an FYI post, have not been able to find anyone else with the exact same problem, but thought I would list in the event of.
I originally installed an internal DVD R/RW Lightscribe drive from LaCie in a Power Mac G4 Dual 1Gig and it worked well! I have since purchased a MacPro and wanted to move the Lightscribe drive into the second optical drive bay. So after installing the drive and attempting to open the tray it was apparent that the door on the case would not allow the tray to open. The front of the Lightscribe tray was too bulky to fit through the opening on the narrower Mac Pro optical drive door.
Well, the folks at Lacie had attached a nameplate to the front of the tray that works fine in other configurations, but on the MacPro the clearance for the tray is narrower and it's bulk would not activate the sliding door properly.
Someone was thinking, because the tray nameplate is detachable with a little effort. I can provide photos if need be.
Tray closes as it should now.

    Hi TCherry,
Your situation interests me since I was thinking of doing the same with a previous optical drive from an old G4. I also wanted to add it to my MacPro's 2nd slot.
Are you still willing to supply some pics to see what you did?

  • Third Party Optical Drives and Mac OSX . . . .

My Optical drive on my MacBook does not work and I am trying to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I had brought the MacBook in to the Apple store and the tech could not get it to fail, yet I tested it before I went into the store (no go) and when I got home from the Apple store. Still no go. The tech did tell me it would cost a little over $500 to replace the drive.
I had purchased a Toshiba SuperMulti DVD Drive* a few months back (another story) and figured I could just use the Toshiba drive to install the new OSX version. It whirls and spins but the Mac never see the drive. Do I have the wrong external DVD to work with my Mac?
    * Toshiba Portable USB 2.0 DVD SuperMulti Drive Model No. PA3761U-1DV2.
Any one have any suggestions? Other than pay the $500+ to replace the Mac's Optical Drive or buy a new Mac?

Thanks. I am just so proud of my Macs. I had an external HD plugged into the Mac when I first tried the DVD drive, hence the single plug plugged in. One weakness of the little MacBook is the 2 USB ports. When I removed the HD I decided to try with both USB's plugged in.
I had to buy this Toshiba PC because I was using my Mac with Parallels and Windows XP to run my AutoCAD program. We were working on a wireless network, using an A-B printer switch and the old version of Parallels I had on the MAC was giving me some stability problems. I needed to update and when I decided to "go for it" was informed by some Parallel VM geeks that I might have to reinstall my Windows after the upgraded VM.
I could not find my XP disk and ordered another copy of the Win OS. Meanwhile I needed to work so I bought the Satellite Pro. Asd far as Win boxes go, it is pretty good.
When I get the MAC updated, I will install the latest update for Parallels, reinstall the Win XP and my AutoCAD. If it is stable I will go back to using it for work and put this Toshiba on the shelf.
