Swapping out Graphics card on HP Envy 17-k251na

Hello! I have a feeling that i may have been given the wrong information by the assistant i bought my machine from in PC world...
I was assured i would be able to swap out my graphics card, which is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (4 GB DDR3 dedicated)
and upgrade.
I was also told i could upgrade the processor.
I've been told by a few people that this simply isn't true and to upgrade the Graphics Card i'd need a whole new motherboard... but the term "dedicated" is what's confusing me... am i wrong in thinking that it works seperately and the term "intergrated" means that it's part of the motherboard?
I spent a lot of money on this laptop on the premis of what the assistant told me! Ultimately that i would be able to upgrade this laptop as time went on. (I want to primarly want to use this for gaming)
I'm hoping what people are telling me is all hear say.. it doesn't seem to make sence to me that i can choose between two different graphics cards to run games with and they'd BOTH be intergrated into the mother board....
The other one that's in my machine is an Intel Graphics HD 5500.
Also this machine has a 1 TB HDD and an 8GB SSD, i'd like to also swap out for a larger SSD... i was also told that this was possible.

Right now the links to your product manual are down but assuming the 17-k200 series is like the 17-k000 and 17-k100 series there is no easy access to the hard drives and memory. That is, no customer accessible panels on the bottom you can open by just removing a screw. Further, there is no graphics "card" to just "swap out". "Dedicated" and "integrated" refer to the use of memory. An integrated video card shares system memory; i.e. the RAM supplied by the RAM modules you clip into the RAM slots. Dedicated video memory is memory built into the video chip. On a laptop, both kinds of video cards are soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. Your laptop has "switchable" graphics and most definitely has two different video chips soldered onto different places on the motherboard.
As for the processor, you already have one of the newest and best laptop processors offered. The video you have is also pretty top-notch. I am always a bit baffled by people who buy a laptop with the idea of upgrading it. Laptops just do not work that way. Components are way crazy expensive. Your processor is so new there are none to be purchased but when it does become available it will be over $350. On the very few super expensive engineering and high-end gaming laptops that do have a kind of removeable graphics card (mxm) high-end ones run at least $450. So even if you could do the upgrades, which you cannot, you would be looking at over $1000 with labor. I understand people do not appreciate the cold reality of this.
And just to hit you with more bad news, on your model the CPU might be soldered to the motherboard so it cannot be upgraded at all. I can confirm when your Manual is back online.
Upgrading memory and changing the hard drive for an SSD also requires extensive complex disassembly.
You have one of the best consumer laptops on the market. There is just not much upgrade headroom. It sounds like what you really want is a gaming laptop. HP makes one called the Omen which sells for about $1500-1800US, and would be a little stronger than what you have, particularly in the graphics. But even that is kind of a middle of the road thing. You can order a custom gaming laptop from a company like Sager and it is going to cost upwards of $2500 for the very best. Maybe you can complain to PC World and just return the one you have and start over a little wiser for the trouble.

Upgrading the Graphics Card in HP ENVY h8-1414 Desktop Series PCs

What are the steps you need to do when Upgrading the Graphics Card in HP ENVY h8-1414 Desktop Series PCs, with the HP M3970AM-HP (Angelica2) Motherboard. As it has no onboard video, so if the new card isn't installed correct you will not have picture on monitor.

The only advice I can offer is to make sure you change the 2 BIOS settings required to be changed when you install a non-HP video card.

Also before you install the new video card, make sure you uninstall the driver from the old video card, shut down the PC and then install the new video card.
To uninstall the driver, go to the device manager, click to expand the display adapters category, right click on the display adapter listed there, select uninstall and check the uninstall driver box. Do not reboot as prompted, shut the PC down.
However, I have no idea if the video card you intend to install is compatible with your PC.

HDMI Out Graphics Card

(This is for my friend who's too lazy to create an account)
My friend just got a Mac Pro (standard specs) and hooked it up to a monitor he just got from newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009154
Since it only has HDMI ports, he has it hooked up through an HDMI to DVI adapter, however there is random flickering here and there (which is probably due to the refresh rate, but there's no option to change it other then the one selected). I'm assuming the graphics card can't interface with the display properly causing this flickering to happen every once in a while. Can you reccomend a Graphics Card that has an HDMI out port on it that's good and not too expensive (around $250 range or below)?

I don't think your assumption (that the graphics card can't interface with the display properly) is accurate. HDMI has the same video signals as DVI, and no real conversion is done.
If you're seeing flickering "once in a while" it is unlikely that it's a problem with the frame rate. I suspect you're seeing a phenomenon other than flickering, like the graphics updating too slowly. If it's flickering due to frame rate issues you'd see it constantly with a white screen. And even then it could still be caused by a bad inverter or even your ambient light source.

Cannot use seconf graphics card with Hp envy Recline

The HP recline has 2 display adapters , INtel integrated 4600 and Nividia Gt730A. I tried to force use of the Nividia card by selecting it in the nividia control panel as the default card but it does not work. I ran dxdiag and it still show intel as the default card.
I tried to run 3DMark11 buy selecting Nividia but it wont run and I gethis error message:
"Workload Single init returned error message: No outputs found on DXGI adapter"
3Dmark11 will run with either Auto or Intel graphics card selected (but with very poor frame rates )
So now I am not sure whether the GT730 is working of not or is there something wrong with DXGI? , DX11?
Advise please.

The 3D mark11 support forum informed that this is normal. Explanation is as follows:

At end of the 3DMark 11 Tests , the summary did indicate that GT730A was used . So it's not really an issue but rather the way the dual graphics cards work in the HP Envy Recline.

Looking to upgrade graphics card in HP Envy 15 notebook

I use my laptop for gaming mostly and all games are good except i get fps lag when i play certain games. I beleive that it is because I dont have a good graphincs card. Is it possible to change the graphics card on the HP Envy 15 Notebook? If so, what graphics cards are compatible with this laptop?

HP currently doesn't have a True Gaming Laptop and for those you can expect to spend above 1500US to get the gaming requirements needs to play demanding games. That is why you get lags when you play certain games once you go above the specs of the Envy 15 it will not be able to handle such games.

Upgrading Graphics Card on HP Envy Phoenix 810qe Desktop

So a little while ago I got a new Envy Phoenix 810qe Desktop (the windows 8 version) with the following customizations: 4th gen Intel i7-4790k @4.0 Ghz, 16Gb DDR3-1600Mhz (2 DIMMs), 2 Tb 7200 Rpm SATA Hard Drive, 16 Gb mSATA SSD cache, HP WLAN 802.11 ac 2x2 DB MCard BT WIDI, 15-in-1 Multi-slot Media Card Reader, 6 USB Ports (Front/Top), Audio [Front 4USB2.0, Top 2USB3.0], 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 745. I want to know if I could put in an Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 graphics card in place of the GTX 745. But in the post it seemed like the person asking the question just had the base computer and hadn't customized it, and I'm left wondering if the customizing I did to my computer has taken up more watts from the PSU. Since I know that the GTX 980 would need all 500 of the watts that my computer has to offer I want to know if my computer might still be able to run this beast of a GPU. Anybody have any ideas? If not I think I can just settle for a Geforce GTX 960 because that only needs 400w of total system power. But I'm not even sure that could work on my current computer either. Any Help???

Please post the HP product number for your PC. How to Find the HP Model Number and the HP Product Number or let HP automatically find your PC model number and HP network attached printers. This will allow others to review your issue, make suggestions and review your responses. This is usually the best way to get assistance.
The power draw of the NVIDIA GTX 980 can vary depending on the card. You may need either two eight pin PCI-E power connectors or two six pin PCI-E power connectors and a power supply minimum of 500-600 watts depending on the particular graphics card.

Graphic Card for HP Envy 15 x360

I bought HP Envy 15 x360 on recommendation of salesman for gaming in may 2015. Aside from Atila Total War it was running most of Games like Civilization V and Civilization IV in Windows 8. Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 10 and now all of my games are gtting stuck. Especially for Civ V and Civ IV. The graphics are not smooth and its running a lot of time to get to the next turn. Plus in the middle of games, key board button and mouse stop responding. So I a not sure, is it a graphics problem or the Hard Ware Problem. Plus I am not getting any graphic properties in windows 10 and i did not see any graphic drivers for Envy 15 x360. So now what should i do. 1) Wait for the HP: To make display drivers for Envy 15 x360 in Windows 10 incase it is a software glitch. 2)Install Video Graphics card: I will be pleased if someone shares me information regarding it. Can we install graphics card in Envy 15 x360. 3)Buy a new Lap Top: I just bought this 3 months ago so i would not be happy with this option. 4) Change this with new HP Lap top Model. Is it possible to change it with the new Lap Top from HP having better graphics Card. I will be happy to pay for the difference in the price plus additional for the 3 month use of the Lap Top.

Do you know what graphics chip you have? There are a few versions of the Pavilion 15 x360 and we need to know exactly what we are dealing with. I can tell you for sure that Options 2 and 4 are not going to happen. There is no physical means or method to install a video card inside your laptop. The video is just one of the chips soldered right to the motherboard. There is no HP trade-in/upgrade program as you describe.

Can I swap out Sim cards from my iPhone 4 to my new 4S?

I was hoping I could so I don't have to wait for AT&T to activate my 4S. I've been trying for almost 4 hours with no luck. I don't see why I can't but I'm not an expert at all. Seems silly to waste my current sim card when it works perfectly fine.

Your SIM card is your identity on your carrier's network.
It allows them to track you, the bandwith your voice and data xfers worth, and to bill you accordingly.
Therefore, you cannot just swap the card as it has to be activated by your carrier on his network.

Get "TV Out" graphics card for PAL monitor?

I'm having problems acheiving an external PAL monitor thru my camera. What if I cut out the camera with a new card for 'TV out', would this make the set-up more robust. Would the 'TV out' merely duplicate the computer monitor display? This is really frustrating, I need to see what I'm doing. Please help if you can!

It depends on what you mean by a new card. If you are talking about a Kona or Decklink - sure. A less expensive alternative may be the Canopus series of Digital Video/ Analog converter boxes. They take firewire in and output analog.

Swap out graphics that have popups

For RoboHelp 7 HTML I have to replace all of the graphics in
a RH 7 HTML project. These existing GIF images have lots of popups.
I had to recapture every graphic and was told to use the PNG
format.
But, what are the mechanics to make the swap so that I do not
lose the popups?
(In RH 5, there was a built-in editor. I would open the image
using the editor within RH. Then I copied the BMP file (unopened)
from within Windows Explorer and then pasted it into RH’s
image editor that had to old file open. It was so cool and easy.)

Of course the simplest approach would be to simply save the
image to the folder using the same file name and format as before.
But seeing as how you are changing formats, the next approach is
probably best.
Just right-click the image and choose Image Properties from
the context menu. Then point at the new image. Whatever you had
linked should remain linked and shouldn't be altered. At least on
my PC this is how it works.

Graphics Card Swap Outs

PCs using MS operating systems can just swap out graphics cards. I want to buy the 17" MacBook Pro, but want the ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 instead of the 1600 currently packaged in the system so I can game as well as use it for business.
Question: Can you just swap out the 1600 and replace it with the 1800, or is the proprietary system too inflexible to allow that? A wantabee Mac owner.....

I want to get a 17" macbook pro with an upgraded ATI card, the 1800 or the 1900 - but there is NO WAY TO TALK TO TECHS! It is not a hard switch, bet there is no special requirements as it is just a faster model that fits in the same PCI express slot. I want someone IN THE TECH DEPARTMENT to tell me that the Mac is so propriety that it is totally inflexible to make that adjustment. OR, tell me that the new operating system 17" will have the new 1800 or 1900 ATI card - I will wait to buy then. Otherwise, I will go get the Dell 2010 that has the 1800 already in it (BUT i WILL NOT BE HAPPY ABOUT THE BUY.) By the way - it was your own sales agent at an Apple store that told me the 1600 was a dog compared to the 1800.....

Graphics Card Failure! can no longer use my Mac

Today while view images in iPhoto (latest version)
My screen suddenly flickered red and the the lower 3 quarters of the screen (apple cinema display 24) went all scrambled.
I shut down.
I checked the display by attaching it to my mac mini and no problems, works perfectly.
I reattached the display to my Mac Pro again.
I booted in safe mode and the screen was barely discernible and totally psychedelic (reds and magenta's) but I could navigate around.
decided to reboot and zap the PRAM (x3).
let the machine continue after 3rd PRAM zap and the screen was totally unreadable.
rebooted in safe mode and screen was worse.
tried to reboot with the snow leopard dvd using "option" this screen came up fine.
chose the 10.6 install disc and the grey apple screen with the little time elapse wheel came up as the disc was being read, about 5 mins into the dvd read the screen froze.
decided to start machine in target disc mode "T key" and attached the Mac Pro to my mini via firewire. all of the mac pro's internal discs mounted, I check all discs with disk utility and they all passed
repaired blessed drive and it passed with no problems.
decided to reinstall snow leopard from mini onto mac pro blessed drive.
tried booting up mini from mac pro blessed dive and no problem starting up mini.
tried rebooting mac pro to see if this new reinstall would work and it locked up during startup.
tried to reboot with my original system install discs that came with my mac pro by using the "option" at start to choose startup disc and system locked up after about 5 mins.
also tried reboot mac pro in safe mode again and the screen is now black after several minutes.
I can't remember the exact model of nVidia car I have, I believe it's the 8800 GT (need to look at my receipt ) I bought in in January when this model came out.
anyone else have a video card die like this?
I plan to drag in my unit to a Genius Bar and see if they can test or swap out the card.

Apparently, the graphics card is dead.
I also booted into Win XP. While the XP interface did not crash (I have the Win 2000 skin active, which obviously doesn't have any 3D stuff), as soon as I launched a game (GTA IV), the system crashed.
I'll get a Radeon HD 4870 now. I just hope, nothing else is broken...

Dead graphic card?

Hey everyone! I've run into a strange problem while playing World of Warcraft. While playing the game I started to notice little squares everywhere and a sort of "kolidascope" (spelling?) thing happening with the screen. I knew my fan needed to be replaced but was told that it would probably not be an issue until I had gotten rid of my G5 so replacing the fan wasn't a huge priority. However I did buy a new fan for my Radeon x800 and installed it. The fan is an Artic Cooling ATI Silencer fan and does one heck of a good job cooling the card. However, after installing the fan the issue remained with my game. Now, this problem only happens when I play the game. No other games do this and my desktop and movies are just fine. Just so you know I use the DVI out for my monitor and have not tried using the VGA out. I talked to Blizzard on the World of Warcraft forums and was simply told that the squares issues is due to the fact that the card is overheating. But how can this be true if I've just installed a new fan that cools the card better than the original fan I had. I've ran many temperature applications to watch this fan and have a widget that watches it at all times. The fan runs quieter than the stock ATI one and seems to be cooling it a few degrees lower than the stock one. I'll see ranges from 3 to 10 degrees depending on what I'm doing. Warcraft is an intensive game for the card so the fans do kick up when I play, so I do expect a rise in temperature but no overheating.
To add I've just installed the Warcraft Test Realms, which is a seperate game from the regular application. When booting up the Test Realms the issue is still there but incredibly less noticable. Should I maybe try reinstalling the game?
So all in all is my card the issue or the game the issue? I know this is a very wide question but any help would be awesome. Have I maybe damaged my card with the old fan if it was dieing slowly? I'm currently at work so when I get home I'll post some screen shots of what is happening in game for a better understanding of the situation. Again, I thank everyone for there time and help. Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 (December 2004). Ever since I swapped my graphics card for an ATI Radeon X800 XT (November 2005) I observed a considerable heat issue with my G5. The machine got very hot, to say, the cooling fans were running constantly on high speed, sometimes full speed (summer). So at some point the original cooling of the graphics card quit – and it took me a while to figure this out (I am not looking into the computercase every day). So I bought this Arctic Cooling Silencer (February 2007), which is a fine piece and does a very good job alright, and attached it, so far so good, but I cannot help the notion that the heat from this graphics card blew my motherboard and CPUs last week (November 2007)! So, you may well exchange harddisks and memory, but avoid fiddling with your Macs, they just do not like heat.

IMac G5 Graphic Card Replacement for blue screen problem

When I turn on iMac, I only see blue screen, the apple technician said Need to replace graphic card, Nvidia Gforce 7600GT 256.
1, can it install in IMac? Seem like it work for PC?

If you look around, you might be able to find someone who will replace just the chip on the graphics card, which is what usually fails. It will take someone highly skilled; they really have to know what they're doing--it's not an ordinary soldering job.
Here's someone who found a non-Apple service to do this, and it proved to be far less expensive than a full logic board replacement. But I think this was in the UK.
