Swapping out old Extreme N with new Extreme AC?

I am using a first gen Extreme N and a Express N for an extender/wireless printing.
I am going to get a new Extreme AC.
1.) What do I do to replace the Extreme N with the Extreme AC? Do I just unplug it, and swap the ethernet cable with the new AC and use Airport Utility to setup the new Extreme AC?
2.) If I name the new Extreme AC the same name as my Extreme N will my devices recognize it, or will they have to be each re-logged in?
3.) I currently have a few devices that have AC built in, like my MBP and iMac. What is the gain in speed when transferring files through Airdrop or just file sharing wirelessly on my network with AC vs. N?
Thanks.

The Apple sales rep told me that the vertical antenna design of the new Extreme AC vs. the flatter Extreme N is far superior and the reason that there is not an Express AC on the market is because it is not necessary to use an Express as an Extender now with the superior signal strength of the AC.
The antenna design is certainly an improvement, but stating that alone has obviated the use of the Express as an extender is a dubious conclusion to draw. That's the most charitable way I can put it. A less charitable reply would employ a popular colloquial expression describing the substance the Apple sales rep is full of, and it would be deleted by this site's Hosts.
Yes... though "much farther" is subjective. The only way to quantify it is to use it in one's own wireless environment.
Yes.

  • Swapping out old modem using existing Airport Extreme

I think my cable modem has burned out so I am swapping out the old modem with a new version fo the same modem and using existing my existing Airport Extreme - I thought I could just power everything off, plug in the new modem and then power back up but Airport is flashing orange. What step/s am I missing? Thanks very much!

Suggest that you try the following:
Power off everything again and wait at least 15 minutes. (Some cable companies...like mine....take even longer for the equipment back at the company to fully reset)
Power off means pulling the power cord from the back of the modem or unplugging the power cord from the wall.
Power up the cable modem and let it run by itself at least 2 minutes
Power up the AirPort Exteme the same way
Power up each network device one at a time about a minute apart
    Check the network
If no luck, you will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Exreme and reconfigure it again.

Be sure to use the same time of power down, power up sequence as above.

  • Problems swapping out old Base Station for New ABE802.11n

I purchased a new AirPort Extreme w/ 802.11n to replace my old dome shaped base station extreme but have been unable to get new AirPort to work. Network is set up as follows: DSL modem connects to base station to create a wireless network. Ethernet port out of basestation connects to wired network. An AExpress located in another part of house connects to network via ethernet and is also set to create a wireless network with identical name, password as one created by Base Station, thereby extending the range of the wireless network (and allowing streaming of iTunes over in-house stereo system).
This set up worked perfectly with the old dome base station, but I have been unable to get new AirPort to create a functioning wireless network. It creates the network, but is then unable to connect to the internet. The wired network is working, and the AExpress portion of the wireless network is working, so I know its not my DSL connection.
Things I have tried: setting up the new APExtreme with the configuration file from the old base station (fail), setting the new APExtreme up as a new network, with new name (fail), turning off the AExpress and creating a new network with the APExtreme (fail). In every instance I get a network, but am unable to connect to the internet. The DSL modem is assigning IP addresses, so I've set the APExtreme up in bridge mode, although I tried the other DHCP settings and using PPPoE option, also with no luck.
Any guidance or insights would be appreciated.

Nevermind - I got it to work by changing from bridge mode to having the Base Station assign IP addresses. Airport Utility says that this is a problem, but I now have a fully functional wireless network.

  • Swapping out a WRT54G for a new WRT54G

    Swapping out
I have purchased a new WRT54G Router (V6.0) to replace an older WRT54G Router(V2.1) due to suspected intermediate problems.
Can I just physically replace the old one with the new one and then manually re-enter my current configuration changes, like ssid, mac addresses to permit, password, etc?  Or do I need to install using the CD?

If it were me I would just slap it in and then using your (with a direct connect to one of your switch ports) browser http to the IP 198.168.1.1. Login using the defaults and set it up that way. You should get a snapshot of your old linksys setting  before you pull it off. I installed my first linksys that way and it wasn't till ver 5 that I encountered the CD. For your basic install this should be just fine. I am sure there is a lot of good stuff on the CD, but just get it up and running that is the way I would go.
Oh by the way...Wanna buy a used linksys router? Lookie here in my trunk...gotta a couple extra hubs and switches...
    It's Labor Day...just kidding...hope you had a nice weekend.

It just looks fishy too me. It would be highly appreciated if someone could just check this out just to tell me that i don't need to worry about it. Or point me in the right direction. I just feel un easy about this. ha.

    Hi mshields1162,
Great question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
First, you may want to choose to have the sidebar displayed for familiarity:
    iTunes 11: Frequently used features
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5649
Afterwards, your device should be displayed if connected:
We'll want to click on it, and choose the Music tab at the top. Let's make sure "Sync Music" is checked:
Afterwards, you'll have the option to sync either the entire music library (for your first iPod), or "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" (for the secondary device). Upon selecting this option, four larger option boxes will appear allowing you to pick and choose what content will be synced. For audiobooks, you may need to do the above in the "Books" section. For a visual instruction on how to do this, see the following:
iTunes 10: Sync to your iPod

    Thanks,
    Matt M.

If you need to extract the drive's content you can remove it and install it in a $10 USB enclosure. It will be readable by any recent Mac.

  • Can I swap out old RAM with new before install of new HD?

I am replacing a friend's HD for her MacBook Pro 5,2 and also swapping out the old memory (2-2GBs) for new memory (2-4 GBs). My question is: does it matter whether I install the new memory before I install the HD or after? If after, does it matter whether or not the HD has been formatted? Has an OS installed on it? Any help here would be very much appreciated!

Your snow leopard dvd will format the HD properly to install the OS. Just replace the HD put in the snow leopard disc and let it do its thing

  • Password error from old Airport G3 to new Extreme base

    Hello,
Yesterday installed new Airport Extreme card + base to my iMac powerpc - works a treat.
The old powerbook G3 with its original Airport Express card finds the network on the base.
    Both computers have OS 10.3.9
But the laptop returns " network password error ' each time I try to connect.
    Password is 13chs.
    Any ideas please.
    Many thanks.
    Ken in Bournemouth UK..

Are you trying to use WPA2? If so your PowerBook G3 with an original AirPort card will not be able to connect. Only AirPort Extreme cards are able to use WPA2.

  • Swapped out old 500GB orig TC for 2TB TC

Picked up a 2TB Dual-band to replace my current (working) 500GB original non dual-band version.
the 500 was used mainly for timemachine backups, and now with the 2TB I plan on keeping my TImeMachine back ups and also serve a small music library to my itunes
so my question is this; i want to take the sparsebundle images from the 500 to the 2TB, but i already set up the 2tb with my iTunes music and the name of the drive in the 2tb TC is "Multimedia" which is also the same as my 1tb external (just to make it easier to plug in my external and play music off the external when im not connected to my network), and the original 500 TimeCapsule drive name was Data.
Is there a way to keep my current back ups and make my mac back upto the old sparebundles on the new 2tb timecapsule under the "Multimedia" drive name?
    thanks.
    edit:
    Okay...well it worked, sort of...I'm just curious though since now it says capacity at 497GB;
so it must still be reading the data from the old TimeCapsule? I havent done an update yet, i was just testing to browse through it to make sure everything was intact (it was)
So assuming, once I actually get a new back up going it should say Space capacity: 2TB~
As of now its Available space on the new 2TB is 1.7TB

    FrankBobandy wrote:
I did transfer them over to the new time capsule.
That's where the problem lies. When you create a +sparse bundle disk image+ yourself (via Disk Utility), you give it a +maximum size.+ It's actual size starts out at zero, then grows to the maximum as things are added.
When Time Machine creates a sparse bundle for your backups, it sets it's maximum size to the size of the partition it is on -- even if there are 2 or more, they all have the same maximum equal to the size of the partition. When you copied the sparse bundle, the maximum size came along with it.
You might be able to change the size, but reports of whether it actually works are, pardon the pun, sparse. I don't have a Time Capsule, but can't get it to work on the sparse bundle on the USB drive attached to my Airport Extreme, so I can't give you precise instructions.
Specifically, it won't let me make it smaller than the partition it's on, which makes me think Time Machine has put something special on it that prevents it from being changed. Several folks have reported that attempts to modify a TM sparse bundle, or get TM to back up to a sparse bundle created manually, do not work.
Open the TC via the Finder. Double-click the "partition" it's on (Data, I think?), and also open Disk Utility. What you need to do is see the sparse bundle, but don't mount it. Instead, drag it to the Finder's sidebar and select it there. Then select +Images > Resize+ from the Disk Utility menubar.
After a short delay, DU should give you a small window for the Resize. Click the down arrow to open it up. Specify the +New Size+ you want and click the +Resize Image Only+ button, then the Resize button.
See what happens. If there's a problem, select +Window > Show Log+ from the menubar.
I doubt this will work. Most likely, your only option is to erase the HD or delete the sparse bundles and let TM start over.
But hey, it's worth a shot!

  • Can I use old Mac Pro with new iMac?

I have a Mac Pro (Pre 2007) running on 10.6.8 that is ok for now, but experiencing some degradation in performance. I have 4 drive bays full and memory maxed out. I am looking for a desktop solution that would allow the option to have the latest OSX (such as the latest iMac) and access this old Mac Pro still. Is this possible?
If so, what are some of the caveats?
SoftwareEx: CS6 is compatible with new OSX, but will files saved on new computer still be accessible on old computer?
    Access to files
NetworkCurrently using older version of Airport Extreme for home office setup
Any insights would be helpful! I hate the thought of this old workhorse turning into nothing more than an external hard drive, but it is not upgradable to the new operating system.

It sounds like what you want to do is create a simple peer network so you can use the Mac Pro as a storage unit.
This is easy to do, just connect the two with an ethernet cable and log on using the logon and password for the system you want to access. In the general case, this is a bad idea since you you have unrestricted access but you own both machines so security is a very low priority.
    Caveats:
The OS version will determine what apps a machine can run.
Data is just data as long as both systems use HSF+ or some other common file system.
Airport may or may not work... but a hard wire will always get it done and transfers data a lot faster.
You almost never get to have it ALL your way when mixing generations of systems, but if you keep it simple it works well. I've had a peer network with 4-6 systems running in my house since the turn of the century. Most Macs support 1000 baseT (gigabit ether) so data transfers up to 80-90MB/sec are easy.

  • Old macbook replaced with new one, still have old hard drive.

I have the old hard drive from my non functioning 3 year old white macbook. Today I have a new white macbook complements of extended warranty. I tried swapping the old drive with the new, but it entered into a boot up loop. It chimes, sits there on the grey screen, then reboots. I'm assuming this is due to upgraded hardware in the new macbook being incompatible with OSX Tiger on the old drive.
So is it possible to put the old drive into an external drive case and run the migration assistant to transfer all the settings, apps, etc across? Is there another way I can make the old drive work with the the new macbook? Thought I might ask before I start shelling out for an external drive case or paying the apple repair store to transfer my data.
    Thanks,
    Warren.

Yes you could install it into an external drive case. (They are not that expensive).
Yes, you could reformat the drive GUID partition and install your OS on it.

  • I have replaced my old Mac Mini with new one.  What should I do about my Time Capsule?

With the old Mac Mini (2009 model) I used Time Machine and a Time Capsule to back up everything on the Mac Mini itself and on external hard drive I added when I needed more storage space.  I've replaced the old Mac Mini with a 2011 model, and migrated the contents of the old one to the new one from Time Machine.
I'm now trying to figure out what I should do to my Time Capsule and/or Time Machine to make backups going forward of the same content, now on my new Mac Mini and same external hard drive.
When I go into Time Machine, it does not seem to recognise the items on the external hard drive as ones that I can backup (or not, as there were some items there that I did not and do not wish to backup to Time Capsule) through the new Mac Mini.
I am uncertain too whether the Time Machine/Time Capsule will recognise the items of my old Mac Mini as the same ones that are now on my new Mac Mini and save changes there, or whether it will try to save all over again all the same items, as they are now on a different computer.
My inclination is to clear out the contents of the Time Capsule now and start all over again.
I have looked through information provided by Apple but not found answers to my questions.

The situation concerning the hard drive is complicated.  It is not included in the list of Excluded Items.
If the drive is not "Excluded", then it must be included.  That is the way that Apple's software works.
But, nor am I given the option to select it or any of the items in it for adding to the list of Excluded Items.
If you want to add an item to the list of Excluded items, click the + button at the bottom of the Excluded list, then navigate to select the drive to add it. Once the drive has been added, you can go back in and select the items.
When I go into the exclude from backup area and select the hard drive, it and the items in it appear in dimmed form, but I cannot select them.
Sorry, I do not understand what you are trying to say here.
What I want to do, but cannot, is what I did before, select one of the items in it not to be backed up and leave the rest to be backed up
I have no idea how you were able to do this. As long as I can remember, Time Machine will not allow you to pick and choose items on a drive to be backed up or excluded. Your option is to have the entire drive backed up, or the entire drive to not be backed up.
have not seen the 'Quick Erase' option.
You would use AirPort Utility to erase the Time Capsule drive. Open AirPort Utillty and click the Disks tab at the top of the screen. Then, click Erase Disk.  The Quick Erase option will appear.
