Swapping the GPU (iMac 24" 2.93 Early 2009)

Hi everybody!
I bought an iMac a few months ago; I chose the 24" model with 2.93Ghz, and the GT 120 Graphic card.
My question is: Is this graphic card soldered to the motherboard? What kind of Socket does it use?
If one day I realize I need more GPU power (because Gt120 only has 256Mb), will be able to change it to another better? like GT 130, or ATI Radeon HD 4850... (both Mac edition)
*Note: I know that the iMac is not the best mac to change components, like Mac Pro; But I need to know if it is possible.*
If it's possible, I have more doubts waiting
Thank you very much.

Probably not. At least not without some sort of superhack job to the logicboard.
You make find a teardown on the internet for your model. As well as if someone has done what you are asking. It most likely will not be an easy project.

  • The internal hard drive on my early 2009 24" iMac is nearly full.  How do I add an external drive so that it functions just like the internal drive on the iMac?

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 24" iMac is nearly full.  I have already worked to free as much space on the HD as possible.  How do I add an external HD and have the iMac read it as though it was part of the internal HD.  I know about external HD for additional storage and I do have an external HD, but, it is so much easier to search the drive when it is internal than having to perform a search on the internal drive and then a search on the external drives.  And, it is easier to save files to an internal drive so that I don't have to decide which external drive to use to save files.  In other words, I want to add an external HD and have it function as though I had purchased a larger internal HD.

That is simply not possible. Every drive is a separate device. It cannot be used to extend an internal drive as though you had a seamlessly larger drive.
What you can do is to create a striped RAID array using the internal drive and an external drive. However, doing this will erase the internal drive and you will lose everything on the internal drive. Furthermore, installing Lion or Mountain Lion becomes a bit of a problem because you cannot create a Recovery HD on a RAID and this tends to make the installer choke. However, you can clone an existing Lion or Mountain Lion system to the RAID and designate the RAID as a startup volume.
I would not recommend the RAID solution, personally, but there are many who do. I prefer the basic solution of spending the money on a larger internal hard drive instead of an external hard drive.
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs.  Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
Pros and cons. Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?

  • I am in the process of completely restoring my (Early 2009) MacBook.  In doing so, of course, I am backing up or otherwise transferring all of the files that I would like to keep onto my desktop iMac over wifi by simply connecting to the user account-

On the shared option in Finder.  Would there happen to be a quicker, more effective means of doing this?  I don't have an external hard drive (other than my 1TB iMac's).  Is that something that the 'Thunderbolt' cable is designed for?
It seems like it might take up to eight hours to compelte the transfer, since there is almost 20GB of material.

I agree with Keith about using the Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. This way there's no chance of errors due to dropouts using the wireless connection.
According to MacTracker your early 2009 Macbook does have a Firewire 400 connector which should do the job very well.

  • What is the best way to upgrade my Early 2009 Macbook Pro 17"?

My Macbook hasn't been working well and I'm worried about things getting worse when going to Yosemite.  My system has some hardware problems (CD drive doesn't work, needs a new battery), but I'm looking to upgrade the whole system now.  I'd like to up the RAM to 8GB, put in a new hard drive (solid state?), etc...
Here is my EtreCheck-- I am looking for advice about what needs to be done to get my system back up and working?  Thanks!

    1. Increase your RAM to the maximum 8 Gigs.
    2. Replace your 5400 rpm hard drive with either a SSD or, if price is an obstacle, a hybrid 7200 rpm drive.
    3. Buy a new battery, recommend the genuine Apple one.
    4. Replace the DVD drive, if you need it.

  • I am in the process of completely restoring my Early 2009 MacBook, which is the computer that I originally created my iCloud account with; which, consequently, is the original location of all of the music that finds its way from iCloud-

Onto all of my other device.  Is all of the music in iCloud safe if I restore my MacBook?
I have an iPhone and an iMac.  There is a lot of music that I have downloaded from iCloud onto both devices – however, not all.  My question is: will the songs that have not been downloaded onto my iMac from iCloud be lost if I restore the computer that was the original location of all of that music?

  • IMac 24" 3.06Ghz (early 2009) 8gb ram upgrade causing kernel panic

When 2 x 4Gb ram modules are installed there is a kernel panic on startup, yet if I mix the old (2Gb) and the new (4Gb) in any slot/module combination to give me a total of 6Gb there is no problem.
It seems the machine is maxing out at 6Gb but Apple states 8Gb as max
New ram modules labeled: 4gb ddr3 pc3-8500 sodimm
    System:OSX 7.1

    Just found this:
4 GB SODIMMs will not work in most Macs. 4 GB SODIMMs are relatively expensive. The Macs in the chart above listing 6 GB maximums will take one 4 GB plus one 2 GB, but two 4 GB modules crash the machine as soon as the OS tried to access more than 4096 MB of memory. The exceptions are the Early 2009 iMacs (not education model) and the Early 2009 MacBook Pro (except 2.4GHz) which can each take two 4 GB SODIMMs for a maximum of 8GB and, to some extent, the Late 2007 MacBook and later and the Mid 2007 MacBook Pro and later which can take one 4GB SODIMM along with one 2GB SODIMM for a maximum of 6GB.
The above exceprt is from this website.
I wasn't aware that there was an "Education model" however I did buy it through the education store when I was in college, so perhaps this is why I am only able to get the 6 gig to work on my Early 2009.  I'd be interested to know if the other people in this thread having this issue also bought their iMacs from the education store.

  • Can I swap the hard drive from MacBook Pro 17 (2009) to MacBook Pro 15 (2006)?

My MacBook Pro 17 (2009) died. Pushing the power button gets no response. I had had problems with it for some time turning it on, it usually taking many many tries. Plus when I'd try to do a restart after updating software, instead of doing so it'd shut off super quick with a *pop* sound. There was never any of the typical hard drive going bad sounds I've read about and seen in videos. Since it has refused to turn on I've gone through every suggestion I can find to get it to turn back on. Unhook the battery and try starting from just the power cord; the shorting the power pads move; some thing undoing the battery, counting to 10, and then the next steps now escape my memory, but doing more counting to 10 inbetween; unplugging the battery and leaving it sit for 2 days with no power cord plugged in either, then hook it to a power cord and turn it back on; and so many more.
Also the symptoms just before this fiasco were as follows: I had a CD in the internal drive and was browsing through the images on it via the handy previewer using the space bar. Then I decided to quite, tried ejecting the CD by dragging the icon to the trash, and nothing. I tried again. The same. Then I pushed on the eject key, with the ejct icon popping up on the screen momentarily, but still nothing. Then it appreared as though some things worked and other things were not working. In my frustration I went to the Apple menu and clicked restart with a wince knowing it was going to take forever to turn back on. It did the usual quickly off with a *pop* and made super short lame attempts to turn back on when using the power button. Of course the CD kept trying to spin for a split second and then the little indicator light on the front would go out, then no noise at all.
Since I do not believe it is the hard drive (of course I could be wrong not being a Mac nerd at all), I was wondering if I can switch the hard drive to my Macbook Pro 15 (2006)?
I tried this, but it would not read the hard drive. Just a blank grey screen. If it is possible to do this swap, what are the exact steps to do? Please answer like I'm completely illiterate on this, because I really am. I'm super scared of losing everything on the dead MacBook's hard drive. Yeah yeah, I know: then why have I not been backing things up? I had the week prior. Believe me I WILL be doing it daily from now on if I get this mess straightened out!

OGELTHORPE really sorry to keep bugging you, but it's obvious you know what you are talking about and I'm stuck on thin ice here getting this fixed, because there are no authorized Apple reps here. I would rather shoot myself for messing up, then to trust someone who "says" they can fix my Mac down here.
I checked out a company owned by ebay that is the same down here, called MercadoLibre. There are quite a few adapters listed there. I'd like to give you links for some and was wondering if you minded taking a look to tell me if any seem to fit the bill. Some have specs in English, others don't. (Google translater is my friend!)

I've also looked for the 7200 rpm HDD, and although I found some, I'll be danged if they are not 3.0, instead of the 2.5 that I have. Grrrr! I was willing to spend the $90 for 1tb... or being the non-techie that I am, can this 3.0 go into my 2006 MBP??
Just so you can see what all is listed right now:
    http://listado.mercadolibre.com.uy/7200-rpm-hdd-2.5-macbook-pro
Another newbie question: How do I check what the amount if RAM is presently installed in it? (I might be a greenhorn, but I take pride in not being a dumbie and I learn when taught)
Right now, I'm willing to spend almost anything. I want a few files that are on the HDD at the moment that I was stupid and did not backup on my external. One file I worked on all day due to the dimensions I had to design it at and each effect took a long time to render. I really don't want to do that one again!.. I'm also willing to spend anything that won't cost me the price of a new iMac. Figure that should be the next one I buy that is affordable, but won't be overworked like the MBP was.
Once again, thanks much for all of your help!

  • Can I replace the LCD with an LED on Early 2009 24" model?

I have an old 2009 (okay, so not that old) iMac and the LCD has some serious burn-in and it's to the point where I can't use the computer without it hurting my eyes. I'm looking to replace the screen, but the computer still works great and I don't want to have to do this again in four to five years. Any chance I can take an LED display from a 24" Cinema Display and put it in the iMac, or are the connections different?

Personally I would use a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter, DVI cable and a $130 DVI monitor, before shelling out for a $500 to $600 for a replacement panel. Or at least until your 100% sure, that there is nothing wrong with the logicboard or graphic's chip.
Optionally a Belkin Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable would be an even cheaper setup, if you already have an HDMI TV.
Addtitionally I would probably just replace the iMac with another iMac or Mac Mini, because it is real hard to justify spending anything at all on a 5 year old system.

  • Early-2009 iMac Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

I have a 24" early-2009 iMac (2.66 Ghz, Intel based, 8 GB of RAM, 2 TB hard drive, Mountain Lion OSX).  Apple's website fails to list my particular iMac in the list of machines that can only run Windows 7 Pro 32-bit so I bought a 64-bit copy (there was another website that I located that listed my iMac as being capable of running both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions).  Today I went to load Windows 7 throuh bootcamp, but the instructions for bootcamp state that the 64-bit version can only work on iMacs starting in LATE 2009.
Does anyone know if the version of Windows 7 that I have will work with my iMac?  Anyone had any success loading Windows 7 Pro 64-bit through bootcamp on an early-2009 iMac?
Please note that I posted a similar question earlier today, but it wasn't listed under this particular community and figured this was the better place to ask this question.  Also, I have reviewed other similar postings but most seem to get into the technical issues of loading Windows 7 through bootcamp, but don't address the issue here of using an early-2009 iMac.  If, however, I have overlooked such a posting then please direct me to it because I want to get Windows running so I can run Microsoft Office.
    Thanks.

There has always been a way to get x64 to install - where there is will there is way. I have 2006 Mac with 64-bit processor (Xeon) but EFI is 32-bit, which would also mean that even if I used 32-bit Windows I would only be able to use a meager 1.9GB RAM! to say I ain't about to and amused at this is an understatement.

Some require using your Windows in a VM first.
    VirtualBox is free VM
Windows 8 Preview is also free (32/64 versions)
The iMac was really strange. Even the 2008s had Penryn 64-bit processor and Apple had started supporting both MacBook and MacBook Pro 64-bit (they later degraded MacBook to not being supported in late 2008 - really ).
You want Office, and it might run just fine in 32-bit in a VM so another reason to try VirtualBox - I know Excel runs better natively

    If you see this:
"Installation error: Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model."
Means just use control+click and "Troubleshooting Compatibility Mode" and/or use the BOOTCAMP64.msi app directly instead of SETUP or anything else. I know Lion Boot Camp support software is even more agressive at this whole "unsupported" stuff - very odd to say the least.

No that will not work. However you might try installing 10.4 on an external HD and that may work. I would recommend using a FW 800 drive otherwise the performance will be pretty poor.

  • What is the correct boot camp version to use with an early 2009 iMac 24 inch?  Boot Camp assistant says software not currently available?

I have an early 2009 24 inch iMac.  It is running mavericks.  When I attempt to download using the boot camp assistant i get the message " software not currently available from server"  So I went to the Boot Camp support website and there are about half a dozen versions of the boot camp download.  None of them match my hardware.  I tried the one closest, but when I went to run the setup in windows, it says my machine does not support x64.  I have installed windows 7 home premium x64....It works, sort of.  I cant get sound and my magic mouse behaves badly.
Do I need a different version of windows or is there a compatible version of boot camp for my system?  Thanks for reading.

If you installed Mavericks then you had Boot Camp 5 installed automatically. If you have tried downloading from Apple's download site you won't find a version other than 4 or 5 that provide a total package.

    Hello ROBLAHAY,
I'm sorry to hear you are having this issue with your MacBook Air. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact configuration you are describing. If you are talking about using two external Thunderbolt displays (in addition to the internal display) with your Mid 2011 MacBook Air 11-inch, you may want to be aware that only a single external Thunderbolt display is supported on that model, as noted in the following article:
    3. How many Apple Thunderbolt Displays can I use with my Mac in OS X?
The table below indicates how many Thunderbolt displays can be connected to Thunderbolt-capable Mac computers in OS X.

    Maximum connected displays
Thunderbolt-capable Macs with Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics can support one connected Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch).

  • When support After Effects Ray-traced 3D the GPU of the new iMac with retina display (GPU: AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB)?

I would like to know whether After Effects CC Ray-traced 3D support the GPU of the new iMac with retina display.

It never will. This is nVidia-exclusive technology and the whole things is deprecated, anyway. You better learn to use Cineware, buy a 3D program like Pro Animator or Element 3D or learn a proper 3D program.

i have an imac g4 purchased Dec 2003 runnung OS 10.5.8.  It runs fine with airport off, but when I turn airport on it freezes with the black page,  "restart by holding power key . . ."  I swapped the airport extreme card with the one in my ibook G4 (purchased same date and running same OS).  No change in operation.
I am running wifi from verizon.  Recently changed from mifi2200 to jetpak 4620 in a 3G location.  Ibook running fine, desktop freezes.  If I can boot desktop in safe mode and get airport turned off in time. then I can reboot regularly and imac runs flawlessly with no wireless.Have run disk utilities and TechTool Pro rebuild etc, but nothing has worked.  How do I fine the culprit?

the power logix thing was really sad. apple changed so much after 10.4.8 that there wasn't a viable way to patch the software.
That statement is precisely why I don't believe in blindly updating the OS, especially in a non-standard machine.
We can't expect third parties to support us forever, and it is shameful to break something that works fine, except that we updated the OS....
I think that any upgrade or modification to a machine or the OS greatly increases the risk of trouble or incompatibility with current configuration and "new" system files.
After all, the component or software could only be tested as far as the current OS version when the component or software was released.
Beyond that, we are all "beta testing".
Following a beta tester protocol, and applying updates to a cloned system drive first, is a prudent way to approach updates, and not only for older, heavily modified machines.
After 10.4.8 and moreso with Leopard, the focus is primarily on Intel architecture, not PPC architecture.
Like it or not, we are all updating to the abyss of the extinction of our machines, unless we can be satisfied with the last stable version of OS that works well with our hardware and software.
I wish they would include the latest pkgs at least with software update.
Yes, having individual packages, rather than lump "OS X 10.x.x" updates would be nice.
This way, one could update as one sees fit. That is to say, for example, fix the Quicktime, but leave my Network alone, etc., etc.
In all fairness, Apple does provide for some breakdown of updates, but I believe there is much room for improvement, especially, as you point out, with regard to the core services portion of the OS.
Until then, I'll leave Software Update disabled.......

i smashed the screen of my iphone 5 earlier and it was bought just before christmas, i was wondering will apple repair the screen for free or swap the phone? the phone is still working fine, just the screen needs changing by the looks of it.

Why would Apple replace or repair the phone for free? Will a car manufacturer replace or repair the car you drove into a wall for free? If you sit on your spectacles, will the optician give you another pair for free?
You can get an out of warranty replacement phone for $199 in the US, similar price in your local currency.
