Swapping the SSD from a BTO 2010 iMac for a standard HD and doing a RAID

Does anyone know:
1) If it's possible to remove the SSD that comes in the BTO 2010 iMac without voiding warranty?
2) If yes to 1), is it possible to install a standard hard drive in that slot?
3) Is the SSD a 2.5 and the other hard drive a 3.5 form factor?
4) If yes to 1) and 2), and if we put a 1TB drive in each bay, is it possible to do a "striped" RAID with the two disks?

1) If it's possible to remove the SSD that comes in the BTO 2010 iMac without voiding warranty?
The answer to that is in the warranty. Here is what it says:
This warranty does not apply: (a) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship; (b) to cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken plastic on ports; (c) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products; (d) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (e) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (f) *to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”); (g) to a product or part that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple; or* (h) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced.
2) If yes to 1), is it possible to install a standard hard drive in that slot?
See answer to Q1.
3) Is the SSD a 2.5 and the other hard drive a 3.5 form factor?

  • I can't install Mavericks on the new SSD in my mid-2010 iMac

I recently had my old 500 GB hard drive swapped out for a new 480 GB SSD on my mid-2010 iMac. I made a flash drive into an OSX Mavericks installer per instructions from online tutorials. With the flash drive inserted, I formatted the new SSD in disk utility and then selected it to install Mavericks. However, I can't complete the installation, which is supposed to take 26 minutes, because the screen goes black midway through. I tried this twice and the second time moved the mouse periodically to make sure that the computer wasn't going to sleep. Same thing happened. Installer says that the installation can be recovered, but it will not complete installation. Any advice much appreciated!

Wondering if this can be done
    Yes.

Also I have 4 ram slots with 2gb in two of them can I install two sticks of 4gb in the empty ones without impacting performance
Yes. Recommended in pairs. So 2x2GB + 2x4GB SO DIMMS for a total of 12 would be fine.

  • Interface on SSD in BTO 2010 iMac

Hello, Does anyone know the interface type on the SSD available in the BTO 2010 iMac 27"? The other hard drive is listed as Serial ATA, I am thinking of removing the SSD and replacing with a standard hard drive so I can do a RAID, but can't find info about the SSD interface anywhere. Thanks in advance!

The SSD slot will only accommodate a 2.5" drive.

  • Has Apple ever fixed the fan issue that results from upgrading the hard drives on 2009-2010 iMacs?

Has Apple ever fixed the fan issue that results from upgrading the hard drives on 2009-2010 iMacs?
My CPU fan defaults to 3000RPM.  I can rev the fan higher with 3rd party Fan controllers, but no lower than 3K.

OR you can short out the original temp sensor, to make the fans rev at quieter speeds.
You can also install an optical temp sensor in place of the old one, it will still read temps and adjust the fans accordingly, just not as good as an internal sensor.
    Use something like this:http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-922-9229-Cable-Temp-Sensor-Optical-iMac-27-inch-Late -2009-2010-/111106349896

  • Why wont the SSD from my 2011 MBP work right away in my 2012 MBP?

    I have a 2011 MBP running a Samsung SSD 470 without a problem.
I swapped the SSD into my new 2012 MBP which is, apart from the yearly updates (2.3 i5 to 2.5 i5 processor and RAM speed increase from 1333 to 1600) exactly the same computer. I expected to literally carry on using it from where I left off in the 2011 model but the 2012 machine will not boot with this drive in it.
    Why?

actually i own a late 2011 Macbook Pro and I bought my niece a new 2012 Macbook Pro....
gave her one of my old Kingston V200 128GB SSD to give her speed....
It booted but kept on crashing and the startup is very slow...So i did an internet recovery install....And now it's working great...
came to a conclusion ( i may be wrong ) - because my 2011 is a Sandy Bridge Processor/Chipset combo and the 2012 is the new Ivy Bridge Processor/Chipset combo was the issue...After a clean install, everything was fine...
I understand you're hesitant about doing a clean install because you don't have it backed up....
Try booting with the original drive to see if your sata cable is fine just to eliminate your sata cable as defective...

    Hi all,
Does anyone know how to capture the SP username of who is making submission of the data from an InfoPath 2010 form? I looking to avoid the user need to type extra information like username/ manager name, etc; and then use code behind to be doing validation

    Hi Cristina,
Please check the following article with using web service UserProfileService.asmx to get the current user profile in InfoPath code behind and use the validating event to do some complex validation, it should help.

  • I want to use the SSD from my new 12 core in my old 4 core but the 4 core doesn't see the SSD.  Flashing file with "?".  What do I need to do?

I spend a lot of time in a location far from home.  I bought a new MacPro 12 core to use at home and took the old 4 core to the alternate location.  I figured I could just take my hard drives back and forth instead of schlepping a whole MacPro.  The 12 core has a SSD drive to boot from and a 2 TB storage drive for photo files.  It came with Mountain Lion (10.8.2).  At the new location the 4 core does not find the SSD and won't boot.  Grey screen.  If I take the SSD out I can boot with the 2TB drive but it boots in OSX 10.6.8.  I can get by with that workaround, but I'd like to use the SSD if I can because PhotoShop runs a lot faster from it.
The SSD does not show up in Finder or Disk Utility when the computer is booted up with the 2TB drive.
What do I need to do?

...or that the installed image on the SSD came from a model-specific version of Mac OS X that shipped with that Mac, and does not have the drivers to support a different model Macintosh, not even an older Mac Pro.
You can install a new Mac OS X image, such as "Full Retail" 10.6.3 off a DVD in under an hour, and have it up to date and ready for production in only a little more time.
Or you could clone 10.6.8 onto the SSD (from the other Hard Drive that does boot) in about a quarter hour.

  • I just purchased a 24" iMac A1225 without a hard drive.   Can I transfer the drive from my old 17" iMac, with OS 10.68 installed on it, or do I have to clone, migrate or reinstall?

    Hal

Aha OK then, that should work fine.
The only snag might be, if your missing the original thermal sensor from the original 24" Hard Drive.
Then again, you should be able to use the one that came from the original 17" Hard Drive.

  • Problem with the% deviation from Project Server 2010 field

    hello
I have a problem with the% deviation from Project Server 2010 field.
Within a file or project, this project contains tasks.
Each task has completed the field% deviation.
Within the row "Summary" in the field of% deviation does not perform the sum of all fields of tasks.
Only occurs on certain projects, these projects have the view of PR Progress Report
    Anyone know happens?
    thank you very much

    Hi
Sorry, I'll be more specific now.
Within the field% deviation. Your settings in PWA is:
    The formula for field% Deviation:
    Str (IIf ([Job baseline] = 0; IIf ([Working] = 0, 0, 100); IIf ([Working] = 0; -100; Int (100 * ([Job] - [Work Online base]) / [Working baseline])))) + "%"
Under the heading rows Calculation Summary:
    > Use formula.
Within the field Allocation Calculation of rows:
    > It is labeled the "Apply unless you manually specify".
The field [Job] and field [Job baseline] are fields Pack project server.
The error is in project, in the list of tasks.
In the top row, this row summary makes the sum of the ranks of the tasks of the file.
But in my case only in the summary field the same value appears in the tasks.
In all the cells in column% deviation appears the same value.
    I hope it helps.
    thank you very much

  • I want to transfer some of the data from an intel 2006 iMac running 10.4.11 to a 2011 iMac running 10.6.8

I want to transfer some of the data from an intel 2006 iMac running 10.4.11 to a 2011 iMac running 10.6.8. What is the best way?

It depends on what you have. The options include:
    1. Connect them with a FireWire cable and start up with old iMac with the T key held down.
    2. Copy the files over a network.
    3. Copy the files to an external drive. Some files require the volume to be formatted as Mac OS Extended.

IF your system is running extremely slow with no applications running other than Finder then I'd suspect a failing HD or you have a runaway process somewhere. Open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and look to see if you have any applications taking a large %CPU, if you do that is your problem. To test the HD run Apple Hardware Test, please read:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
to learn how to run AHT on your machine, also run it in EXTENDED MODE so it does the most complete test. If no errors are found after the first pass run it another 2-3 times to be thorough.

If I want to take my old iPhone and swap the number from my wife's phone to it so she can use it for her phone how do I do it?

    With AT&T it's ridiculously easy.
    Create backups for each device
Log out of iCloud Apple ID
    Erase all content and settings
    Power off the devices
    Change the SIM
    Power on the device
Configure with the appropriate Apple ID
Finally, dial 611 to let AT&T know what iPhone should answer to what number.

  • Command F2 not working on 2010 iMac for TDM

I want to convert my 2010 iMac to be just a monitor for a 2011 MacBook Pro. Have thunderbolt cable between. command F2 does nothing. I have verified that the keyboard preferences are NOT using F2 as standard function key. I am using an Apple wireless keyboard for the iMac.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    Two things:
To use Target Display mode, your iMac must be a 27-inch one. If not, you cannot use Target Display mode.
Your Mid 2010 iMac has not got Thunderbolt and it does not detect a Thunderbolt cable, being this the reason why you cannot use Target Display mode.
If you have got a Mid 2010 27-inch iMac, just get a Mini DisplayPort cable instead and you will be able to turn on Target Display mode. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
If you have got a Mid 2010 21'5-inch iMac, you need to use an application like ScreenRecycler
