Swapping users between a desktop and a laptop

hi folks. i'm going out of town working for a month. while i'm gone i want to use my wife's ibook and let her use my office desktop mac.
what is the best way to "swap" the users between the two? i would like her to be able to sit down at the desktop mac and have all her settings, docs, etc. just the way she has them on the laptop, and vice versa for me on her ibook. most of the apps are the same.
do i completely wipe both drives? or can i just swap certain files? can i do it with migration assistant?
i can't find anything by searching here or with google, since the "swap file" is something specific and not what i'm looking for.
anyone? i leave in a week. thanks!
iBook & G4 w/ Dual 2G CPU   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   GBs of RAM and TBs of Storage

What I would do is create a new user on each machine. Now just copy files from one machine to another, e.g. from the old user on machine A to the new user on machine B, and from the older user on machine B to the new user on machine A. There are many "sync" applications that can help you automate this process (look on versiontracker).
When you get home, just "sync" again, and presto, you're ready to swap computers.
This is basically a variant of what I do every time I go on a trip. In my situation there is no second user, but there are two computers and I want the portable to take on all the characteristics of my desktop machine at the moment I am about to walk out the door.

  • How do I stop the EMAIL sync between my desktop  and my laptop?

How do I stop the email sync between my desktop computer and my laptop? Right now, the laptop is set to automatically load my email when I click on mail. I use my desktop daily; laptop only when traveling. The laptop is somehow set to receive ALL messages, so I get messages that are several weeks/months old. I want to be able to manually sync and NOT have all of the hundreds of old, already viewed messages sent to my laptop. However, I DO want my desktop to receive all of my old messages so that I can have them when I return from traveling. Thanks.

Actually, your mail isn't 'synchronizing' in the conventional sense at all. And, you are effectively trying to make it do so manually at the present time. As you have discovered, this simply does not work.
The only way that you can effectively address your requirements is to use IMAP—rather than POP3—technology. Using IMAP will allow you to readily control what is stored on the server, and will provide a view into that data store when you use your portable computer.
While is is possible to use POP3 and set one computer to delete mail from the server and the other not to, this is potentially fraught with problems, and will not fully address your concerns.
An IMAP option is available from such providers as Apple with .Mac, AOL with AOL Mail and AIM Mail, and Google with GMail. You can convert an existing POP3 account with such a provider to IMAP with little difficulty, or initiate a new IMAP account with such a provider and forward mail to it from providers who do not offer such an option.

  • Problems with ipod synching between pc desktop and mac laptop?

Has anyone had any problems trying to synch their ipod in both a windows desktop version of itunes and a mac laptop version of itunes? if it is all ready synched with windows will it be compatible to synch to a mac laptop?
    thanks

Click here and follow the instructions; Windows formatted iPods can be synced by the Mac version of iTunes, but not have their firmware updated without a restore except in the case of the iPod shuffle.

  • Can you transfer catalogs between a desktop and a laptop

I am wondering if I can transfer my catalog data from my desk top to my laptop via an external drive.
My orginal photos will still be one the desktop but I believe teh smart preview would still be in the catalop on the drive?

I use a server to store all my photos and presently have 4TB of storage so I don't worry to much about space.
I want to be able to work on my photo over the lunch hour or at coffee shops and not always at the desk.  I have a 500GB portable drive I can use to storage the catalaog on but don't want to carry around the photos all the time.
If I can transfer the project catalog to the drive and use the smart preview to get some of my work done remotely that will help alot.

Currently have access to a friends computer with CS3 installed.I am going to buy a desktop with Windows 8 and I also have a laptop with Windows 7. What version of Photoshop is currently available that will work on both the desktop and the laptop? Can I install the same copy of Photoshop on the both machines simultaneously?

You can either buy a CS6 perpetual license, or Creative Cloud subscription.  Both will run on the two computers you mention.  You are allowed two installation with either version, but they must be for the same user. There is a cheap as chips Photography deal that gives you Photoshop and Lightroom for just $10/month, and feature gap is ever widening between CS6 and CC

  • Adobe Flash Builder 4 licence is for one desktop and one laptop, only one at a time run or

After installing Adobe Flash Builder 4 needed install AIR? Adobe Flex 4 SDK IS ALREADY INCLUDED?
Adobe Flash Builder 4 licence is for one desktop and one laptop, only one at a time run or...?

    hi,
Flashbuilder has the ability to create and run Air content from the IDE, to actually usean Air App outside of the IDE you need to install Air.
Flashbuilder install includes 2 sdks, the 3.5 sdk for 'backward' compatibility with Flexbuilder and for targeting flashplayer 9, the 4.x SDK for Flashbuilder and  targetting flashplayer 10.0 and above.
As far as fair use is concerned Adobe have had fair use software licensing for a while, single user 2 devices is not a problem, what is not clear is if you can use the software on both devices at the same time.

  • Tethering via USB between the Z10 and a laptop or PC & and few Comments About the Playbook Tethering

Tethering via USB between the Z10 and a laptop or PC can be a bit tricky.
On the Z10 do the following:
On the Z10 go to the Settings.
    Go to Network Connections.
    Go to Internet Tethering.
    Select USB.
    Turn on Tethering.
On the computer run the Blackberry Link software for the Z10:
Once the software starts, connect the Z10 via the USB cable to the PC.
    Open the browser.
You should now be able to cruise the net, and do emails.
With the Playbook, the Bluetooth tethering does not yet work. This may be an OS or communications issue.
The best way to tether the Playbook for full speed and functions is using the WiFi option. Simply turn on the WiFi hot spot option and follow the instructions. The Playbook WiFi must also be properly set up. The Z10 USB and Bluetooth tethering mode must be turned off when using the WiFi mode. You can leave the base Bluetooth active on the Z10. There is a lot of available information about using the WiFi hot spot from the Z10. The process is very similar to the past models of Blackberry phones.
If you use the Bridge mode to tether, the Playbook email client software does not work very well. The browser will work fairly well, but slower with the Bridge mode. With WiFi the Playbook can brows at very high speed. With Bluetooth it is restricted to about 1.5 to 2.5 mb/sec. Take care that the WiFi mode burns through battery time very fast on both the Playbook and the Z10. Using the Bridge mode uses less power consumption than WiFi.
To use the Bridge mode, make sure the Playbook and the Z10 are first Bluetooth mated. Also the Bridge mode has to be set up between the devices. You will have to first install the Bridge software in to the phone for this to work.
I did extensive testing between the Z10 and the Playbook. They function well together as far as Internet and email are concerned, in consideration of using either tether or Bridge, depending on what you want to do.
From what I understand the Bridge mode uses some compression. It will not be as fast as using WiFi or Bluetooth tethering. The data cost using the Bridge mode is probably a bit lower because of the compression.
As far as the Bridge phone options are concerned, these features are not yet available. From what I read in a number of articles there are going to soon be some updates coming out to fix this. The Bridge options are a big part of the tablet application with the Blackberry phone. This was the big original application point of this tablet, otherwise any generic tablet would do the job.

From the look of this thread it appears that no one outside of Canada uses an OS 10 BB yet.  247 views and no comments or help ?  I'm sure I'm not the only BB user that uses Tether.  If BB doesn't care to help then this will just be another nail in the corporate coffin that has been projected.
Maybe we need different forums for US users as the Canadians don't seem to have the same issues or cares.
The whole idea of the app Tether is not to have to pay the outrageous tethering fees that US carriers charge and it has worked well for years.  But it can't work and won't work in the future without help from BB and the BB community.

Is it possible for me to have CC on two computers at once with my current licensing? I would like to have it on my desktop and my laptop.

Each CC allows you to activate it two times, it can be on the same computer or different.
So you can install &a activate it on two computers but as End user license agreement you can not work on them simultaneously.

We don't know what Apple plans on doing to change this (and it may not be just Apple but more likely the publishers, since Apple would, of course, do whatever it could to maximize sales/profits).  Right now you can only read Apple books on mobile devices. Sure, buy them from Amazon if you want to read them on the computer. We don't work for Apple so we're pretty impartial on this kind of advice.
You might also see what your library can offer.  My wife can browse the county library from her iPhone, borrow e-versions, and read books on it too.  Free!

  • How can I transfer document ie word and exel files between my iPad and my laptop

How can I transfer files ie Word and Exel between my iPad and my laptop.

It depends on what app(s) that you are using on your iPad that you want to transfer the documents between - without and app the documents cannot be saved (apart from as email attachments), as unlike 'normal' computers the iPad doesn't have a file system and files/documents have to be stored/associated with an app. Once you've got an app then, depending on what it is, transfer might be done via the file sharing section at the bottom of the iPad's apps tab when connected to your computer's iTunes, via wifi, email attachments, Dropbox etc.
