Swatches and opacity

My basic question is how can you make swatches with different opacity? For example, I want to have 6 swatches of one blue, but the difference between each swatch is the opacity (i.e. 10%, 20%....) Is this possible?
Illustrator CC, Mac OS X

Hi Monika,
Thanks for your help. Your suggestion of using tints/global swatch will work on this project, but I was curious if generally it is possible to set opacity for swatches, or if swatches can only determine the fill color.

  • How can I create a scatter brush that preserves the color and opacity of the original selection?

I'd like to scatter a small image randomly, like you can with scatter & size jitter. I can't think of any way to do that on this image other than make a brush out of it, but creating a brush from the image will change its color uniformly. I'd like to keep the color and opacity of the image the same, but have it scattered. I'm sure there's a way to do this, but I can't figure out how. Any ideas?

The MTU setting on the interface is the layer 3 packet size. In this case, the MTU is set to 1500, but the largest frame size transmitted on the interface (including layer 2 headers) is 1516. It sounds like you are experiencing another problem at the LES.

Rather than having lines that begin and end smoothly like real ink/paint, they step from skinny to medium to fat.
Is there a fix for that? The Sketchbook app and S-note can make smooth lines - why can't PS touch for phone do that??

  • Choosing RGB color in Illustrator (swatches and sliders remain in CMYK)

I'm making a simple template to laser cut. The laser cutter acts as a printer and you choose the power, speed, etc. for each colour that is in the document. I only want to cut, so I only have RGB red lines at 0.001 pt thickness. Or at least that was the plan. One of the shapes in my template has come out a different red (the swatches were CMYK despite the document colour mode being RGB). I would now like to select all the paths in the document and make them all RGB red. However, when I open the colour panel from the dock the sliders are CMYK, again this is despite the document colour mode being RGB:
How do I change all the paths to be RGB red?
How do I stop Illustrator offering me CMYK options and swatches and offering RGB instead?
Message was edited by: Dumble_dad adding missing words

    Dumble-dad,
I changed the panel to RGB, but now it is only offering me the K slider!
If you have ticked RGB and got Grayscale, there must be something wrong, quite possibly in your preferences.
Here is a general list of things to try when strangeness strikes (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6, and reinstall.

  • How do you swap an image in the timeline but keep the in/out points and opacity settings?

    Hi There,
We have a file which consists of a bunch of still images that get updated each year - the edits never change.
Is there an edit type that will allow us to swap the images our for new ones but keep the in/lout points and opacity changes? We've looked at all the edit types (overwrite, insert etc) but they don't seem to swap stuff out.
We had also been naming the new files the same as the old ones and reconnecting the media but this is now causing issues.
Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

Click on the new image in the browser, so that it is selected, and the type Command + C to copy it.
Next, click on the clip in the timeline that you want to replace with the image you just copied (preserving your in and out points and opacity settings) and type Option + V to bring up the Paste Attributes Dialog Box.
In the Paste Attributes Dialog box, check the box for Contents and leave the remainder of options unchecked.
Uncheck the Scale Attribute Times option as well.
Click OK, and the image should now be replaced on the timeline with the in/out and opacity changes preserved.

I am having trouble saving my swatches and brushes that I create. After I close Illustrator, and come back later my swatches and brushes are gone.

Once you have a document with the swatches, brushes, symbols that you want, save it as a new Document Profile.
Document profiles can be found (and saved) in Library > Application Support > Adobe > Adobe Illustrator 18 (if you have CC) > your language folder > New Document Profiles.
Next time you create a document you will find it in the list of profiles.

  • Disolve and Opacity issues with CUDA

    Hi there,
I thought this was resolved in an update of CS5.5x... I'm running CS6 fully updated.  I CANNOT do a SMOOTH cross disolve or even a gradual opacity change (using keyframes) when I have CUDA enabled.  It's a 1080P 29.97 timeline with a PSD graphic being disolved/faded over top of black (no footage below it).  I'm running CS6 (6.0.5) on Win7 Pro 64.  With Software Only rendering I get perfect disolves and opacity changes.
    Is there a work around?
    Thank you,
    Stephen

Thinks Jim.  I know CS6 is one version old, but this is really dissapointing.  A disolve is a basic feature.
Until then, I found a workable work-around (if doing a fade-in from NOTHING - not a cross disolve between two clips). I had to add my asset (graphic, title, etc.) to my timeline.  Then add a cross-disolve as well as two opacity keyframes (of course, the first at 0 and the second at 100) to match the cross disolve durration.  Then nest the asset (which moves the disolve and keyframes to a nested sequence).  Then add the cross disolve again.  It seems to do what I want it to... just not as easily.
Thanks again Jim for your quick response- it saved me a lot of time of trial and error trying to fix something that can't be fixed.

  • PS3/Mac Scan plaid fabric swatch and adjust all lines to be perfectly straigh (not wavy)

Hi I am wanting to scan a plaid fabric swatch and adjust so that all lines are perfectly straigh (not wavy).
I know I have learned how to do this in a class, but I cant find my notes, and am desperate, as I have some artwork that needs to be completed.
Any suggestions or advise is Appreciated!
    Thanks

Steaming the fabric flat helps immensely. But to keep the pattern components perfectly lined up is not going to be easy. A T-square, triangle or transparent grid overlay is going to be needed. And you may have to lightly tack the fabric down to a base with spray cement.
And then photograph it with a high-quality longer focal length macro lens. Do not use a zoom lens because of barrel or pin cushion distortion. And make sure you have even lighting on the swatch.
Or carefully place the mounted fabric on a scanner. But be careful that the fabric doesn't move when you close the lid. Scan at a high resolution.

  • Changes to appearance of repeat swatch and gradient (both with transparency applied) when .ai saved in PDF 1.3 compatibility

I need to send a complex vector print to a commercial printer who requires my .ai file to be saved as 1.3 PDF compatibility.  All the graphics display & print correctly bar two elements:
    1. A gradient with transparency applied
    2. A repeat pattern swatch with transparency applied
Both of these elements are layered between a solid colour background and a complex array of vector art.
The gradient displays as solid white when converted to 1.3 PDF.  The pattern swatch displays partly white, with some elements of the pattern repeat visible as a watermark.
    1. I have tried to rasterise these elements within the a@rt, and while they both display correctly while in .ai format, as soon as I convert to PDF the appearance changes as above.
    2. I have tried to apply the transparency to the paint buckets on the gradient slider instead of applying it to the shape with gradient fil
    3. I've fiddled with the Transparency Flattening presets, Document Raster Effect Settings, and everything I can think of in the 'Save as PDF' dialogue box
    4. I've tried to rasterise the full file with an even worse outcome (all colour information lost, appears only on grey scale with fewer elements visible)
Could this have something to do with spot colours or overprint?  Any help would be most appeciated!
    I'm using:
Illustrator CC 18.1.1 (doc colour set to CMYK)
on a Macbook Pro OSX Yosemite Version 10.10.1
    Apple Preview Version 8.0 (859)

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for taking an interest! I tried rebuilding my gradient as suggested to see whether it would make a difference, but was still having issues.  Tried to save every which way with the save as PDF options in 1.3 profile.  Finally went back into the file to unpack each layer and see what I could adjust to save the appearance.
Found this fix in my swatches palette: for some reason the swatches I was working with had converted to "Book Colour", something I never use.  I changed the dropdown back to CMYK and changed the colours from spot to process, which fixed the file    Relief after hours of searching and late nights!
    Thanks again!

  • Replace swatches and text?

Is it possible (with javascript code) to do the following?
    1.  Prompt user to select a color from a predetermined set of colors (hard coded in the script) via a dropdown list
    2.   Take the value that the user selects, and replace the color of all  items that use the swatch called "Primary" with the user selected color  (which is already a swatch name in the document)
    3.  Find and  replace all text in the document from "Primary" to the text that the  user had previously selected from the drop down (it was also a swatch  name).
    4.  Prompt the user to select another color (secondary  color) from a predetermined set of colors (hard coded in the script) via  a dropdown list
    5.  Again, take the value that the user selects  here and replace the color of all items that use the swatch called  "Secondary" to the user selected swatch name.
    6.  Find and replace  all text in the document from "Secondary" to the text  that the user  had previously selected from the drop down (it was also a  swatch name).
    7.  Remove all unused swatches.
Steps 1 & 4 could be combined, if Javascript allows...but I don't know if it does or not.
Let me know if you think this is possible please.
    Thanks!

  • Problem with Cross Dissolve and Opacity

I've been noticing that Cross Dissolve has been acting goofey for awhile but have overcome any problems by manually adjusting opacity settings.  However, this time I can't get either to cooperate. Notice the line appearing below the phrase "the nutrient recommendation map" in the image below.  This line or a similar line will appear as title either cross dissolve into one another or if they are stand alone and the opacity settings fade them in and out.  The blinking of the lines is sporadic and changes as I make adjustments.  I'll "fix" one spot but they will start to blink at other points in the time line and in different areas.
    Any ideas?

I ask because I think I'm having a similar problem.  Went home and updated PPro to 5.0.3 and still have the issue.
The screen shot here show the first seconds of an HDV30/60 sequence as the video fades in (bottom layer - lasts about 2 seconds).  The top layer is a mask to create the effect of a cinescope camera (no fade).  I've cropped the left for demo purposes.
The bottom layer is regular ol' HDV footage.  The top layer was created using a Photoshop file with 2 squares using the shape tool and colored black.
For pre-view and render, you can see a light-colored hair line around the top mask.  I've applied different effect to remove it, but it won't work.  In fact, some effects make it stand out even more.  I've also tried using other assets from the PSD (PNG, PPro black video, etc).  I also tried the cropping work-around but it did not work.
The screenshot is subtle but it's there.  The main thing is that it can be VERY noticable in the BD-R discs I've created played back on set-top players so I'm really hoping there is a fix for it.  I did notice that it will appear when I scrub with my finger on the left mouse key.  As soon as I let go it appears again.
So PPro is up to date, graphics card is up to date, and I've tried suggested fixes and a few of my own with no luck.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Erik

  • Where are my colour swatches and stroke choices

I have a big problem with Illustrator and it happens all the time. I have made a pattern and although it works fine I now have no colours in my swatches just the patterns and my line choices for strokes is now limited to one choice. If I open a new doc the default materials are back and line choices. It's obviously a preference somewhere but I haven't the foggiest idea where to find it. It's very frustrating because I can't reset to the defaults and I can't append colours to the swatches or append new strokes to the line choices.
Can someone tell me how to get this working as I am lost
