SWF blinks as browser opens new page

It looks like there is no way to have a swf on each page
which does not have to disappear with the old page before the new
page is rendered - resulting in a "blink". Is that so? If that is
the case, what is the best way to keep Flash functionality on a
page without a blink? Dynamically loaded content? The page staying
the same, and say using php to load new content? Is there a good
place to go to read about that? Thanks.

Are you referring to the "blinds" effect, white space being replaced by the darker background in a downward motion? That's due to the slow loading of the background elements. It's been noted before. It does the same thing on this demo page of mine. The length of time the "blinds" are visible is tied in with the speed of the internet connection and server speed.
The only way to get rid of it is to use a color for the background. The darkroom theme can't because it has a separate file for the center of the page with the spot in it.

  • Taking forever to open new pages, if at all

    I've used Firefox for years, and it was always THE best browser. However, the last couple of versions have shared a problem, and it's driven me away from Firefox. First of all, regardless of settings, Firefox insists on opening the last page that was displayed, rather than the Google News page that I've told it open...the preference page *shows* the correct Google News page, but, Firefox continues to go back to whatever was last opened. This is annoying, but, not a game-breaker.
    What is, however, is that Firefox has become incredibly slow in opening *any* page, if it opens the page at all. When I attempt to go to a web-page, it appears that it's trying to open that page, but, nothing happens. I get the "loading page", and the url shows up, but, that's it. Sometimes, after several minutes, the page will slowly load; most often, Firefox simply sits there, with no error messages, no "Firefox is not responding" or anything else. I have the latest version of Firefox, along with the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Chrome and Opera; all three of *those* browsers open new pages instantly and go to the proper homepage, by the way.
    I have completely uninstalled Firefox several times, and deleted every trace of it I could find on my computer, to no avail. I would *love* coming back to Firefox, as I still consider it the best browser, but, with the way it's working, that's not an option.
    I have tried every single suggested "fix" in Mozilla support pages, and none have done a bit of good. Any other suggestions?

    On the slowness issue, could you try these two diagnostic steps:
    (1) Run Firefox in its Safe Mode.
    Firefox Safe Mode is a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
    ''If Firefox is not running:'' Hold down the Shift key while launching Firefox.
    ''If Firefox is running:'' Either --
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    -- then OK the action.
    In both scenarios, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Refresh).
    Any difference?
    (2) Disable the Flash plugin
    Since Flash is used so pervasively on the web in the background or for menus, it can be difficult to disentangle Flash issues from other issues. So... here's one way.
    Open the Add-ons page using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
    In the left column, click Plugins. Then on the right find "Shockwave Flash" and set the permission selector to "Never Activate".
    Notice any difference?

  • Why does Firefox get hung up, when opening new pages? I've tried disabling plugins and extensions to no avail.

    Initially, when I open Firefox everything opens very quickly. However, after several minutes it gets hung up when opening new pages. I have close the browser and reopen it to start over. But each time it does the same thing. Works well at first then poops out. The trouble started yesterday. Before then, I never had any problems.

  • Won't open new page when I click bookmark, instead changes pages EVEN THO PREFERENCES SET TO OPEN NEW PAGES

    Firefox keeps on changing pages, even yanking minimized pages back onto the screen and changing them, even though I have Firefox preferences set to always open new pages to accommodate links on a page or bookmarks.
    I don't want Firefox to tamper with any pages, period. If I have a pages minimized, no way should Firefox be yanking that page up back onto the screen because it's "too lazy" to open up a new page to accommodate a bookmark or link clicked on.
    It's extremely aggravating to click a link on a page, get a new page then, when I click the page to close it I find no page underneath, indicating that Firefox had changed the original page rather than open up a new page automatically to accommodate the link, etc.
    What's the point of me in Firefox preferences setting it up for Firefox to open up new pages automatically when afterwards it doesn't?

    Perhaps try the add-on Tab Mix Plus. It has a feature that you can force every link to open in a new tab if you like:
    * http://tmp.garyr.net/help/#Links (description of options - see "Force to open in new tab")
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ (install page)
    I don't know whether it has any effect on bookmarks. You can open those in a new window by holding Shift or in a new tab by holding Ctrl when clicking.

    Hello,
    ''jstavene wrote:''
    can find nothing under the tools menu for private browsing?
    Then it's not the same issue.
    If Firefox is set to '''Never remember history''', then you're in “permanent private browsing” mode, in which case the menu item ''Stop Private Browsing'' will be grayed out. Perhaps that's the case, and you don't find the menu item easy to see?
    * [[Settings for privacy, browsing history and do-not-track]]
    If that's not the case, then menu items can be hidden using the userChrome.css file. Check if it exists, and if it's there, rename it, then restart Firefox.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css
    In Firefox Nightly (what will become Firefox 20), per-window private browsing has been added, so the menu item under the Tools menu is gone. It's been replaced by New Private Window under the File menu. I don't suppose it's very likely that you're using such a cutting-edge test version of Firefox though.
    If that doesn't solve the problem, since it's a different issue, it would be best if you would ask a new question.

  • Firefox not opening new pages in new tabs

    Just updated to FF 5.0 on OS 10.6.6. Got my pref set to open new pages/bookmarks in a new tab, but it just loads them into the current window.
    I disabled all of my extensions (Download helper, web dev tools, Firebug, TinyURL generator, Yahoo mail notifier) and no dice.
    Arg! What happened?
    I appreciate any suggestions.

    If you left-click a link then that link is always opened in a the current tab.<br />
    You need to middle-click a link or use command+Left-click to open the link in a new tab.<br />
    The setting in Firefox > Preferences > Tabs only makes it possible to divert links that specify a target window to open in a new tab instead.
    You can look at these extensions:
    *Open Bookmarks in New Tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-bookmarks-in-new-tab/
    *Open Link in New Tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-link-in-new-tab/

  • BSP code to open new page in new window after button click

    Hi expert,
    I have a requirement to write a BSP code to open new page in new window after button click. I have done the same for opening in same window but not for opening in new window.
    Can you please help me out with the code in which the page opens in new window and the menubar & Addressbar is displayed in hide mode.

    Hi,
    To add more with Anubhav...
                              onClientClick = "javascript:window.open( 'pop.htm' ) "
    You can create a pop.htm page, and call the same in another page using the above code.
    Refer standard BSP examples, SBSPEXT_HTMLB, SBSPEXT_PHTMLB, SBSPEXT_XHTMLB. You can run the default.htm pages and see what way you want to design your BSP.

  • IWeb "open new page in browser" doesn't work?

    On websites I have created in iWeb, the hyperlinks to a web page will not open in a new window even though I have checked that setting in the Inspector. Previously when creating websites with html I would simply add the "blank target" code but in iWeb there is no way to edit html directly. I have tried this with Safari and with Firefox, it doesn't work!
    Message was edited by: Ironic Bliss

    Thanks for those helpful suggestions, though I have batted around different ways of trying to get iWeb to register the "open in new window" when checked, to no avail so far, and it doesn't work with any link, whether in text or combined with an image. Taking all these points:
    I have now managed to open the html using TextWrangler but I must admit it is a little beyond me to even find the string of code in question as iWeb uses so many files. It would be better if I could just get iWeb to do the work for me as it's meant to.
    Strangely, when I open the website in iWeb the first time, all the pages to the left are marked in red before I've done anything! So I cannot use that as a simple check to see if a change has been made. Also I have already tried making other changes after checking the "open in new window" box before saving.
    I always publish to a folder on my HD, as I am uploading to a server that is not me.com or mac.com. (Could that be the trouble? iWeb seems to generally be very unfriendly to publishing on other servers than Apple and I have had to jump through a lot of hoops with various things.)
    Could it be the weird folder hierarchy created by iWeb, where there is an index.html page outside of the main folder where all the stuff is kept? So far, I have just uploaded it to the server "as is", so the contents of the main folder (which has another index.html rather strangely placed outside it) are not at the root level on the server. The folder containing them is at the root level and so is the "external" index.html. Would it work if I uploaded only the contents of the folder to the root directory on the server, and not in the folder that iWeb creates or with its "dummy" index.html outside it?
    (I think in the past this has caused trouble with Google search sitemaps, and is the reason why in the end I uploaded the whole thing and not just the contents of the main folder.)
    So to be clear (not that easy here), the files on the server are:
    Directory > index.html plus the folder containing all the website files. So the actual website files are at a second level in a folder, not at the root level.
    The easiest example where the blank target doesn't work is on the home page of one of my websites. Scroll down and there is an image of a book which has a link to a bookstore. This should open a new page in the browser, but never does. (Annoyingly, in FireFox it even kills the back button, Safari works slightly better in that respect.)

  • Opening new page to a Specific frame

    I am still learning Action Script but I have a problem with
    writing the full script for combing navigate to new URL and
    gotoAndPlay. More specifically what I want to do is use a button
    which when clicked will open a new page and then start playing my
    Flash movie at a certain frame on the Timeline. I have used buttons
    to navigate to a new URL and used the gotoAndPlay ( ) ; command to
    play a certain frame, both have been successful but when I combine
    the two I run into trouble. What happens is the new page loads
    correctly and goes to the specific frame but then opens the browser
    in a new window with the movie playing from the beginning. The
    correct sequence within the correct Webpage is playing but only if
    I close the current page, in other words what I am trying to
    achieve is running but in the background.
    I have attached some of the code I have tried if that helps.
    Many Thanks.

    How extensive are the corresponding text changes on the HTML
    page? How many HTML pages are there? The reason I am asking is that
    if HTML content is not big - your best bet may be to load all the
    HTML content at once and hide/unhide parts of it based on the
    commands that come from Flash.
    But if you are sticking to your guns:
    Your use case, as you described it, is:
    1. user clicks a button on a column
    2. the column clicked moves across the movie
    3. the movie starts to play a different section
    4. the text on the web page changes to match the new movie
    sequence.
    There is a problem here - No 4 requires browser reloading. I
    believe user experience will not be all that good because of the
    visual break (new html page loading) after all the animation
    sequence after the click occurs. Perhaps a better experience can
    be:
    click --> load appropriate page --> perform animation
    sequence.
    As for the variables that you add to the request,
    conceptually it is not different from appending url variables to
    the url string:
    You can do it this way:
    var url:String =
    "www.domain.com/mypage.html?myVariable1=something&myVariable2=somethingElse";
    Or you can do it this way:
    ar url:String = "www.domain.com/mypage.html";
    var variables:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
    variables.myVariable1 = "something";
    variables.myVariable2 = "somethingElse";
    var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(url);
    request.data = variables;
    I hope you see the similarity. The result is the same - Flash
    sends request with the variables.
    You may perceive the second way as more cumbersome but there
    are several advantages of doing it this way. One of the most
    important is that Flash automatically makes variables values url
    formatted which is critical when you send strings with special
    characters. In addition, when you send many variables - it is much
    more manageable than keeping track of the variable and making
    assignments in one-line url string.
    How you deal with it further depends on how good you are with
    HTML and JavaScript OR server side processing.
    Say you need to start your Flash movie from a certain frame
    (say No 50). You may want to:
    1. Load HTML page with a url that contains a frame number:
    variables.startframe = 50;
    2. You need to read this variable with JavaScript and write
    an appropriate embed tag. There are several ways to do that. Read
    about FlashVars. It could be (in the embed tag):
    src="myMovie.swf?startframe=50" where 50 comes from browser
    location string.
    3. Inside Flash you will utilize LoaderInfo.parameters method
    to extract the value of the variable startframe.
    4. Write code that will perform and animation based on this
    variable/parameter.
    I guess a question is "How good are you at HTML and
    JavaScript?"

  • Opening new page

    Ive made a really basic button, that has this code
    attached...
    on (press) {
    getURL("gallery.html", _self);
    This should replace the current page with the gallery page,
    but it doesnt. In Firefox it makes a new tab and in explorer it
    opens a new page.
    What is the code for making it open in the same page?
    Thanks,

  • Send data to asp w/out opening new page

    I'm a Director developer learning Flash. So much is the same,
    so much is different! Anyway, I have a SWF in a web page that uses
    an XMLConnection component to get XML from ASP. I use the
    XMLConnection as the dataProvider for a two Trees. I have a button
    that lets users associate elements from each tree, and the
    requisite data is sent to another ASP page via getURL() so it can
    be stored in a database. All this works fine, but I don't want a
    new page to open, as it does with the "_blank" getURL() window
    argument, and I don't want the current page to change to the ASP
    results(nothing) as it does with "_top", "_parent", "_self" or no
    argument. I've tried using the send() method of a LoadVars object,
    but have the same problem with it. I'm thinking of an in-elegant
    workaround by setting the URL property of another XMLConnetion to
    the ASP page I need to call and then calling trigger(). The
    XMLConnetion component will end up not getting any data back from
    the ASP page but the page should still do the SQL command and
    update the database I think. Is there another function or object
    I’m unaware of that’ll let me do this in a more proper
    way? Thanx in advance for your suggestions.

    LoadVars.send() was opening a new window? That's strange.
    I've had problems with LoadVars.send() and know there used to be
    bugs with it, so I've always used LoadVars. sendAndLoad, and just
    ignore the return. You have to specify a return LoadVars object(or
    it won't always work) but you don't have to anything with it, of
    course.
