Swipe Comping with Multitracked Instruments

Hey,
If I record several drum kit takes with 7 mics at a time, and I wish to quick swipe comp together my part, basically crossfading between the takes in exactly the same place on each track but while keeping the tracks seperate for editing later, is there an easier way I can do this than the painstaking method of deciding my comp on one track then recreating the cuts exactly on each of the other tracks?
An easy solution would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers

Simply group the drum tracks, and make sure that in your 'group settings', you've checked 'edit/selection' so that when you select any member track of the group, the other tracks will be selected as well.
THen swipe/comp any one of your grouped drum tracks and the same edits will take place on all other grouped tracks. Simple as that!
It's great -- when it works. I still encounter random weirdness with the swiping feature, but for the most part it gets the job done. Just save often, or make sure to save a "pre comp" version, then use a new file name, like "DrumTakes_Edit" once you start the slicing and dicing.
good luck.

  • Crash when swipe comping

Im a new logic and mac user. I love the experience so far except when it comes to Logic. When swipe comping Logic inevitably crashes at random points. I cant seem to find a pattern. It happens when theres audio playing and when its still, with multiple takes and with just one. Im on a Mac Book Pro 15" with 2GB of ram and pleanty of HD and I use a PODxt Live for my input and monitoring device. I have the latest drivers from Line 6 for the Pod and this had been stable in all other recording and audio packages, including garage band, so I'm sure its not that. Has anyone else had this problem? I really dont want to return this software as I really do like it otherwise.
    Heres my crash dump:

Oh, I found a bit more information on this. I was able to make it crash even with my POD completely disconnected and recording from the laptop mic. But heres the process.
Create a new empty project (compose for instance). Add a stereo real instrument channel with record on. Block off 4 bars and set them up to loop. Hit 'R'. Wait for 4 loops. Hit Space. Wait a couple seconds. Hit 'R'. Boom it hangs every time.

Hi, i have logic pro 9, but when I record some takes in cycle mode, I cannot edit these takes
with quick swipe comping, there is no button or function when I go the right triangle.
can anybody help? best regards toni

Same problem here. Can't find any info in the manual or online. The manual has all these great things you can do with comp folders but does not address the situation where the "quick swipe comping" icon is missing.

  • Logic crashing while quick swipe comping

Hi, When I click on a region in quick swipe comping mode Logic X crashes. However, if I just try slowly drag across and highlight the region it doesn't crash.
It is only happening in sessions after I have been working in them a while, so if I start a new project it works as it should.
Has anyone had a similar experince? I used Logic 8 and 9 for years and never experienced this.
BTW these are sessions that were started in Logic 9.
    Thanks!

    Hi Matt,
Unfortunately, I've not found a fix - or the reason why it's happening. Someone on another forum suggested it may be due to Mavericks having issues handling memory, which may be the cause but I did use Logic 9 on Mavericks with no problems.
If you copy your track onto another track it will usually work ok.
These are all the issues I've been experiencing:
    - When I change the region selection in the take folder I can see and hear another region under the one I'm selecting. It looks greyed out but I can still see it and hear it.
I tried re-starting my Mac (running Mavericks) and it did the same thing. If I copy the comp to another track it works fine so I'm thinking some how the file is corrupted? I've been using Logic daily since Logic 8 and have only experienced weird glitches in Logic X.
-When selecting a region in Quick Swipe (by clicking the mouse) it causes the session to crash but if I selected it slowly by dragging the mouse across the region it works fine.
    - The triangle toggle switch to open the take folder doesn't work so I can't hide the takes.
Yes, it is very annoying, especially when it worked so well for years - I'm now seriously considering going back to Pro Tools. Good luck!

  • Quick-swipe comping-Miditracks

    Hello,
I’m puzzled because I’ve got multiple take folders set up, but theres no option for quick-take comping in the menu, and no quick-take comping icon in the region.
Is this because I am on a midi-track..? (Maybe one cannot quick-swipe comp on a midi-track..?)
    Many thanks!

Correct--unfortunately, swipe comping is not supported with MIDI tracks.
    Please file a feature request:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/logicpro.html
In my opinion, MIDI overdubbing is the biggest weakness currently in Logic: the only way to compile a take from multiple overlapping MIDI regions is to create multiple tracks and tediously scissor cut and mute sections.  IMO, Logic badly needs to upgrade MIDI editing to mirror audio editing:
    1) Allow left and right edge of a MIDI region to be dragged around to show/play and hide/mute MIDI notes.
    2) Provide a bin/list of MIDI recordings, so regions can be conveniently stored and retrieved.
    3) Support swipe comping for MIDI tracks.
#3 would be an awesome feature--I'm not aware that any other platform allows this.  But #1 and #2... frankly, I'm not aware of ANY other DAW that *lacks* those features.  Logic badly needs to catch up with MIDI region editing and management.

  • Quick Swipe Comping not working

I've recorded a few takes of a vocal. The takes show up as a comp, with the disclosure triangle in the upper left and the comp menu in the upper right. But I can't drag any selections in the takes to edit the comp via quick swiping. This used to work just fine and now it just doesn't. The pointer never changes to the quick swipe cursor when I point at the edge of a selection where one take ends and another take begins. It's baffling. Anyone have an idea what I could be missing?

I also am experiencing this problem. Quick-swipe comping does not work, and then I copy into a new project and it works again. Closing and opening the project back does not fix, rebooting computer does not fix. I have been getting around it by manually dragging a copy of each take from the "Audio Bin" sidebar tab into new tracks in the arrange window, and then doing old-fashioned slicing and comping from there. This has only been happening to me recently (the earliest i can pin it down is maybe jan or feb. 2010).
For some reason, the problem-take shows up in the Audio Bin tab (& Audio Bin window) with a little lock symbol by it. I looked this up in the user manual (p.292) and it says the lock signifies a "protected" region, which means you can't change the start or end points of the file. This would explain why we can't do quick-swipe comping. However, the manual states you can unlock the region by going to the Audio Bin window (not the tab) and clicking on the lock. THIS IS NOT WORKING. I can lock or unlock other takes at ease, but i cannot unlock my problem take.

  • Playing real instruments with software instruments

Hey, I've been using logic for years but have never tried playing with a real instrument until now. When i connect my guitar Logic recognizes it and changes the driver to unknown USB device, but there is no sound since built-in input isn't selected and the instrument records but i can't hear it until i switch it back. How do you play real instruments with software instruments? Should be pretty simple. Thanks.
    - Sean

Okay… the way Logic works is to use the same device for both Inputs & Outputs (there is a way round this, but let's not go there just now. First person to say 'Aggregate Device' gets thumped!).
So when you choose your device (usefully known as "Unknown USB Device") in Audio MIDI Setup, this means that you are no longer using your Built-in Inputs & Outputs — because that's the alternative.
Which means you won't hear anything through your speakers connected to your Mac. To hear an Output, you would have to connect your monitors/headphones/etc. to your device.
    Furthermore:
    _Auto Input Monitoring_
If Auto Input Monitoring is switched on, you will only hear the input signal during the actual recording—before and afterwards, you’ll hear the previously recorded audio on the track, while the sequencer is running. This helps you to judge punch in and punch out points when punch recording. If Auto Input Monitoring is switched off, you will always hear the input signal.
_To switch auto input monitoring on, do one of the following:_
    • Choose +Options > Audio > Auto Input Monitoring+ from the main menu bar (or use the +Toggle Auto Input Monitoring+ key command).
    • Control-click the Record button in the Transport, and turn on the +Auto Input Monitoring+ setting in the pop-up menu.

You are allowed to have two machines with activated installations, so if you only had one installation, you still have the option to install on a second without doing anything further than that.  If you originally downloaded the purchase thru Adobe then you might find a download link available in your Adobe account online.  You can also download thru the following page if you can find your version:

  • Appcrash with multitrack sessions in Audition CS6 on a MacBook Pro with Windows 7

This is an issue with multitrack sessions different from 44100 Hz in Audition CS6 (as part of a Premium Suite CS6). While multitrack sessions with  a sampling rate of  44100 Hz works normally (as long as I use clips with 44100 Hz) any other sampling rate causes  an APPCRASH (s. below). Also with the insertion ( in a 44100 Hz multitrack session, of course) of any clip with a sampling rate different from 44100 Hz, the programme crashes in the moment it's going to generate a adapted copy for the multitrack timeline.
Audition is installed on a MacBook Pro Retina 15" ,Mid 2014, Model 11,3, Intel Core i7 4870HQ 2,5 GHz, 16GB RAM  with  Windows 7 SP1.
I tried all advices of the Adobe troubleshooting site and some of the community.
    Especially:
    - the simplified mode with user-defined system start
    - deactivated user account control
    - new user account
    - deactivated data execution prevention (DEP)
Also the use of different audio interfaces affords no effect:
    - build in Cirrus Logic CS4208 with MME drivers
    - Motu UltraLight mk3 hybrid via USB with Asio drivers.
In spite of an extensive search I can't find any similar case in the net.
So, please, can you help me?

I'm afraid you are right. At the worst I'm more than 50% of the audition users on a mac with windows. To solve the problem within a passable time I would like to change to the mac version of audition. But unfortunately it's impossible to use the mac version with a windows licence. And CS6 licences (mac audition) are not longer available (only at a moon rate).
Because of the weekend we can pass the time with the latest news of my trouble-shooting.
The crash is not only within the multitrack session but also within the waveform view: when I try to change the sampling rate (Edit -> Convert Sample Type) the programme crashes with the same problem signature. And here it crashes with all sampling rates , including 44.1k audio files. On the other hand I can play all sampling rates within the waveform view.
I compared the logfile from the predecessor of the MacBook , a LG Notebook with windows vista and a working Au CS6 with the current logfile of the Mac: They are identical at the beginning and at the end (termination sequence). But after " Initializing AuScripting"  there is a "DLMS 6.0x39 FileServer startup code: 0" and the listing of a couple of codecs in the Notebook logfile - but not so in the Mac logfile.
Also the logfile of my workstation with a working Au CS6 shows this "DLMS 6.0x39 FileServer startup code" - line. Because of the two working and one crashing computer this part of the logfile seems to be important ??

I am trying to import standard midi file that I created in Band in a Box into Logic Pro 9.  I can not get all the track to play with internal instrument sounds... only the piano track.  how can I get the others to play... drums, bass etc????   Help

Don't drag the midi into an open Logic project. The tracks won't set up correctly.
'Open' the midi file with Logic as if it were a Logic project. Then all the tracks will be set up so you can start editing them and applying better saved sounds and instruments, but you'll be at a starting place where you can hear what's going on.

  • I am not able to communicate with my instruments

    Hello,
I am a graduate student in India. I
am using NI PCI-GPIB card, which we bought nearly one year back. I am using
LabVIEW 6i. For last two days I am not able to communicate with my
instruments (Keithley DMM 196, Keithley current source 220, Lakshore
    temperature controller 93C).
    1. I started NI488.2 troubleshooting wizard. It says NI488.2 software
presence verified, GPIB hardware presence verified,GPIB interfaces
sequentially varified. This means Card is alright?
    2. I started MAX measurement and automation explorer. It lists GPIB0
(PCI-GPIB) under 'devices and interfaces' folder. After selecting this, If
I click at 'scan for instruments', 'Instruments not found' message
    appears.
    3. You may say that instru
ments had problem. But the same instruments are
working fine with another system with other card.
    4. I agin reinstalled PCI GPIB 488.2 driver from the CD. Now It is listing
three instuments out of four. But the GPIB address for these instruments
    are
not same as actual address. It also says instrument didn't reply for *IDN?
    query.
    5. Everything was working alright, this problem arose few days back
    suddenly.
    please help me

    Dear sir,
Really something surprising. My instument is 'LakeShore DRC-93C'
temperature controller. Probably bought around 7-8 years back.
Here is the actual GPIB add & address read by MAX and correponding
    three NI-SPY log.
actual GPIB add*****address read by MAX*****Max Capture(attached files)
    25***** 9*****capture_1
    21***** 5*****no file attached
    20***** 4*****capture_2
    17***** 1*****no file attached
    10***** instrument not found****capture_3
    7*****instrument not found*****no file attached
for first four cases MAX showed 'instrument did not reply to *IDN? query?
Same thing happened when I connected an Keithely Current Source.
    (only one instrument is connected,)
actual GPIB add*****address read by MAX
    8*****instrument not found
    17***** 1
    25***** 9
This means MAX is reading GPIB number 16 less than actual Number? Then I tried
to write command at both GPIB address(actual and read by MAX) but both didn't work?
    What should I do next?
    with best regards

  • RMI Performance Comp. with Forte

    Hi All,
I know that this topic has been discussed on the list
already, but I would like to find out whether the
current state of Sun's RMI implementation is like
I imagine it, and I want to compare with our Forte
Service objects too. Basically, these seem to be
    issues that negatively affect performance,
    1. A thread is created on the server per request, and
there is no way to change this easily (i.e. reuse
    threads from a pool)
    2. Each call opens a new socket.
In particular, does it make sense to replace RMI with
CORBA for increased performance and scalability? Can a
PC-based server handle loads of about 1000 remote
calls per second (considering the overhead imposed by
RMI/other communication methods only)? or Shall we
    compare Forte against RMI.
    Thankx,
    Babu

    Okay,
A method invocation (or function call or procedure call or whatever) is
always a synchronous call. This means, you ask the service to do something
and wait for the function to complete, optionally with return values. It is
possible, that within the method, a separate thread is started, that
continues after the method is completed, but that doesn't change the
mechanism that a method invocation is a synchronous call.
In Forte, it is possible to start a method as an asynchronous call, with the
"start task" command. In that case, the caller does not wait for the method
to complete and return values are not handled. If this method invocation
happens across a network (making it a Remote Method Invocation) then a
socket will be opened when the call is made and closed immediately after. It
does solve the one-socket-per-caller problem, but not the
one-thread-per-caller problem. Also, it does remove the possibility of
    receiving return values.
If you want to keep using method invocations as synchronous calls with
return values, but you also want to share resources like sockets and
threads, then you have to use TP-monitoring concepts. You must have a two
way, asynchronous call with an additional parameter. This means, the client
does a single, brief call that re-uses an existing thread and immediately
frees the socket it used. The client passes all required parameters and one
additional parameter to identify itself. In Forte, this would be a reference
to an anchored object on the client-partition. Then the client waits
(possibly blocks). The server completes the request and locates the client
that sent the request. The server invokes a method on the client, informing
that the request was handled. The server now also passes all return values.
The client exits its wait-state and continues.
In Forte (even if you use other mechanisms to hook into Forte), every call
still is a separete thread. If you wish to re-use existing threads, this
must be done using events. So, a client invokes a method asynchronously
(using "start task") and waits. The server start a new thread and posts an
event. Each existing thread is either idle in an event loop or busy handling
a previous event. The new event is added to the queue of all event loops and
the original thread is terminated (the socket was already freed). One event
loop of the thread-pool will be the first one to respond to the event, mark
this somewhere (maybe using mutex) and start handling it. All the others
will eventually respond to the event as well, but will be able to see that
the event is already being handled and ignore it.
This does introduce overhead and it makes your application more complex, but
it also prevents you running out of resources.
Now, the real issue is not the amount of calls per second, but a combination
of calls per second and seconds to complete the call. Using these two
numbers, you can calculate the amount of tasks the server has to be handling
simultaneously at any given time (average). Using the above described
technique you can handle intermittent, large loads, because if there are
more requests than available resources (threads) at any given time, the
requests will simply be put in a queue and handled later. However, if the
over-load continues for a prolonged period of time, the queue will simply
grow and grow and grow until the partition crashes and all queued items will
    be lost.
Then it is time for load-balancing. You install several additional servers
and run a serverprocess on each of these machines. And you use a router that
distributes calls across the different serverprocesses. Forte has built-in
mechanisms for that, that work reasonably well. However, if the amount of
calls per second is so high, that even the short time it takes the router to
relay the request still is too long, so that the router runs out of
resources, then you have to use more complex models, for which Forte doesn't
have any ready-to-use solutions. But neither does CORBA or Java I believe.
One more thing. If you combine the above described mechanism to free sockets
as quickly as possible and use Forte loadbalancing, you might solve all your
problems. Just install 6 overloaded server processes. This results in 6
processes times 256 threads per process equals 1536 simultaneous tasks. If
each task is an asynchronous method invocation that immediately frees its
socket, then you never block you're whole server by using all sockets and
you're still able to do handle 1536 requests simultaneously.
Remember, if you have such a large load of calls per second, that all pass
through the same machine (router) then you'll run into hardware limitations
and no software solution can fix that. You have to find a mechanism to
distribute calls across different nodes without using a single router. For
example, cluster clients and have a single server node per cluster.
    Pascal.

    Hi,
I believe in CORBA, ORB maintains the same
connection ( Same Socket) for multiple calls, on the
same Servant object, unless otherwise its ONEWAY call.
But RMI uses the same strategy as Forte, I'm not sure
either on this. Thats the reason, i asked the previous
    question.
    Thankx,

  • Working with Ext Instruments (MS2)

Working with external instruments is a very nice addition to MS2. However, I seem to have uncovered some limitations, unless someone else is able to offer an alternative:
Basic config ... I have a single midi controller (EWI) that only transmits on one channel (ch 1). I have an external synth and external effects unit I want to use in various patches.
I have learned that you can't use the same keyboard object and assign it as the input for both the external synth and external effects unit. Even though my EWI transmits on channel 1 only (monophonic) and in both MainStage and Audio Midi setup, the synth is set to receive on channel 1 and the effects to receive on channel 5, whenever I play notes and both external units are receiving their information from the same keyboard, the notes I play on channel 1 are somehow received on the effects unit on channel 5. The result is that the effects unit thinks its getting program changes when it's not. Weird ...
My workaround is to create a Midi object (because I don't want two keyboards on the screen), and assign one to EWI channel 1 and the other to EWI channel 5. Then when creating my patch, I assign the midi input for the external synth to EWI(1) and the external effects to EWI(5). This seems to work, but I wonder if the creation of the extra midi object and assignments causes additional memory usage that could be avoided by using the same one for all things. In fact, since the external effects unit only needs to receive program changes, I wonder why it needs a midi input assignment anyway, since it should just be receiving the program changes from Mainstage and not my EWI.
    Any thoughts?

    - You can define a keyboard object to ignore the incoming channel.
I only have 1 incoming channel
    - I don't know what you mean with "MIDI object". An external channel strip? That channel strip doesn't allow to define a channel as an input. It only has a MIDI port and channel as an output. The input for all channel strips is always a workspace object (which is abstract and doesn't have a channel)
In MS2 there is a new object called Midi Object that seems to act as a replacement for a keyboard object, except it looks like a little bubble and doesn't display any layers.
What I am trying to do is create a patch that is comprised of either two external instrument channel strips or one softsynth channnel strip and one external instrument channel strip where the external inst channel strip is used to send a midi program change to an external effects processor. In either of these two cases, I have found that if I make the midi input the same as my EWI (channel 1), even though it (the external effects unit) is configured to only receive data on channel 5, it still receives note information which appears to be program change messages. The only way to remedy this is to create either a second keyboard object or one of the new midi objects and assign it's input to EWI on midi channel 5, which technically is nothing since that incoming channel from the EWI, doesn't really exist. It seems like a bug to me because, using a patch bay like a MOTU MTP AV and assigning channels to unique pieces of gear helped to prevent any commands from going from one input device to an output device unless you wanted them to.
Again, I don't really understand your problem.
I know I am probably not explaining this well.

  • Do not get option to use swipe gestures with Remote app

I am using Remote version 3.0.1 and with previous remote versions when I opened the app on my phone I would get the option to access my library or to just use swipe gestures to control the apple tv - now I don't, it goes straight to my library when opening the app.  What if I want to watch netflix or something other than playing stuff in my library?  How do I get this functionality back? On the screen shots for the app in AppStore it has a shots of the swipe screen with "Tap to Select or Swipe to Navigate" so it must still be in this version?
    Please help
    Ben

On the bottom of the app there are different options (Playlists, Artists, Control, Search, More). Choose control and it will bring you to that screen. If you can't get there maybe it isn't detecting your Apple TV.
