Swiping is backwards?

Is it me, or does the 3 finger swipe function work backwards? If I'm swiping backwards through web pages, or flicking through photos in iPhoto, I think the natural motion would be left to right, as though I'm flicking through pages of a magazine. Even the little demo video in the settings looks weird. Is there some way to modify this?

Karth - I'm not saying that you find it difficult to use. In fact, I would never make the assumption for any individual about their ability to use a system. What I'm trying to ascertain is Apple's rationale for configuring the the gestures as they have done. iPhone aside, let me try to clarify my example. Zooming and 2D scrolling in a PDF. When a user 2D scrolls, they move their fingers in the direction they wish to see. Down-right lets them look in the lower-right of the page. Fine. The underlying principle here is the direction of finger motion is influences the direction of viewing directly. If this basic principle is applied to zooming, a user would take two fingers and move them closer together. Since the fingers are getting closer together, presumably the viewing area would get smaller, and thus zooming in would occur. This does not happen. Unless someone can help me understand this in a different way, I'm seeing two fundamentally different approaches to multi-touch design. Again, I'm trying to understand the underlying principles used in the design. I am not implying or asserting that the interface is or is not intuitive for you to use. But since Apple did not include your great feature (i.e., preferences to reverse/modify multi-touch gestures), I'm trying to wrap my head around their thinking. Any thoughts to this end?
(BTW - the example of an attached mouse does not support your argument, IMO. The mouse controls a pointer that interacts with GUI elements. Multi-touch aims to allow the user to interact with the GUI elements more directly. To illustrate: with a mouse, if you wish to scroll DOWN on a PDF in Preview, you can "grasp" the document and move the mouse UP. Multi-touch requires the user to move two fingers in the DOWN direction.)

  • Magic mouse forward backward swiping does not work from time to time

    Hello...
from time to time the forward/backward swiping functionality of my magic mouse does not work (The scrolling works though). Disconnecting and reconnecting does not do the trick. So I guess it might be a software problem. Restarting the iMac does not always help at once. After a couple of times it will work though again.
    Can anyone help?

  • Three finger swiping for forward and backwards

I just recently installed Lion (Yay) and I noticed that they have taken out something that I really used a lot in Snow Leopard; the three finger swiping, that could navigate back and forward through pages on the web and replaced the need of using the arrow keys to navigate up and down in apps such as Mail. I loved this feature because it simply made it easier and enjoyable to navigate. I know that it has been replaced with a two finger swipe, but to my knowlege, this is only used it Safari not Chrome or anyother application. Now my question is "Is there a way to get it back?" I'm just looking for something that will at least get the two finger swipe to navigate more than the Safari Application.
    Cheers,
    Callum

So i was in the same boat, and I literally just figured it out like 5 mins ago.
Go into system preferences>Trackpad, click on the tab for More Gestures
Its the very first option you come to on that page, Its 'Swipe between Pages', I was used to 3 fingers left or right.
Ahh back to normal...On to other problems with Lion. Good Luck and I hope this helped.

  • Swiping backwards and forwards within Finder not working

    Hi all,
This is a problem in Mavericks:
If I open a Finder window and then navigate through Folders, I am unable to move backwards (or forwards) within the directory structure using the three finger swipe gesture.  This appears to be disabled in Finder, but it does work in e.g., Safari (for moving backwards and forwards to different webpages).
I have attempted rebooting, rebooting with PRAM reset.
To reproduce the problem, you have to make sure that "Swipe between Pages" is set to "Swipe with three fingers" or "Swipe with two or three fingers" is enabled in Trackpad preferences (under More Gestures).
Does anyone else have this problem?  Do you know how to fix it or get a work-around for it?

  • 2 Lion Problems: Waking from Sleep Doesn't Go to Wifi Network; & Can No Longer Finger Swipe in Firefox to Move Backward/Forward

I hve a late 2009 iMac at home that I've upgraded to Lion. So far, there are only 2 issues that I'm having:
1 - When I wake the iMac from a long sleep, it doens't automatically log into my wifi network. I have to drag the mouse up to the menu bar, click on the signal icon and choose my wifi network. A few tiems yesterday, the computer stopped recognizing the network while I was in the middle of surfing. Haven't had that in a while, but the inability to log in directly after waking up remains.
2 - I use Firefox to surf. I can no longer move backwards and forwards between pages by swiping left or right. It works in Safari, but not in Firefox. Is that a new functionality that has to be rebuilt into Firefox because of Lion?

    Caleb was here wrote:
I have a similar wifi problem after installing Lion. When my computer goes to sleep or I turn my wifi off, it won't reconnect to my wireless network. I have to manually select it and then retype my wep password. It tries to connect and then says "connection timeout" and the login failed, however, even though it says that it was unable to connect, it actually does connect and I get regular connectivity. Frustrating.
    I have a 15" core i7 2010  MBP.
@Caleb was here.  I had the same issue before I switched to Lion, turned  out it was some issue with my router.  I bought another router and I  haven't had the issue since.  Try changing from WEP to WPA (you should  do this anyway) and see if you have the same issues still.

  • Scrolling in Safari triggers back/forward swiping

I have my Macbook Pro set to two-finger scrolling. (I have it set "backwards" so when I swipe towards myself, it scrolls down.)
I also have it set for two-finger swiping to go back and forward.
Since upgrading to Yosemite, it appears that the swiping is far too sensitive. When I just try to scroll, I frequently end up going backward. I'm scrolling straight up or down and the little "back" arrow pops up on the screen. Sometimes I can see it and stop it before it goes backward, but this is highly frustrating when I end up going back instead of just scrolling down. (This is not 100% of the time and because it seems random, it's increasingly frustrating. If anything, it seems to happen more often during quick scrolling.)
Obviously I may not be scrolling at a perfect 0-degree angle, but I'm nowhere near 45-degrees where there might be confusion about whether I want to scroll or swipe. System Preferences has no way to adjust sensitivity or anything. Is there any fix?

    Empty Caches.
    1. Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
"Develop" menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
    2. Quit Safari if open.
Option click the "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
        Select "Library" and then "Caches".
        Look for the folder 'com.apple.Safari"
Right click "com.apple.Safari" and select "Move to Trash"
        Relaunch Safari.

  • Something happened to my left/right swiping

In my trackpad gesture settings I've got left/right swiping between desktop/dashboard/full-screen apps set to 3-finger swiping. That works fine. The problem is that for some reason the same thing is happening with 4-finger swiping as well. 4-finger left/right swiping WAS allowing me to use backward/forward functionality (i.e. in Firefox), but now 3 and 4 fingers does the same thing. I was playing around with the options in the gesture settings earlier today, but everything is configured in the trackpad gestures control panel the way I would like it. I am not sure what happened here.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

That did help. At least I got forward/backward swiping back.
That being said, forward/backwards swiping is now done with 3 fingers and swiping between full screen apps is with 4 fingers. The part that is weird is that I used to be able to, in Lion as when it was first installed, swipe between full screen apps with 3 fingers and standard foward/backwards with 4 fingers. It's just odd that even if I select full screen app switching with 3 fingers, it continues to do it with 4 fingers as well. It's almost like some configuration setting somewhere is stuck and there's no way to reverse it again.
For the time being at least I have it working again per your tip, but I'd still like to find out what's going on at the root of the issue.

  • Can't go backwards or forwards in Finder.

Before I upgraded to Maverick I could use the same gesture to go backward or forward in finder as I did to go backwards/forward in (for example) safari. I had it set up (still have) to do this when I swiped left or right with three fingers.
Now after I upgraded to Maverick I can still use this gesture in safari, but it doesn't work in finder anymore. To go back I have to use the back-arrow-button in the top left corner. Very frustrating. Any ideas on how to solve the issue? And why it happend?

  • Swiping between web pages...

I love swiping between web pages with my magic mouse on my iMac.
Is there any setting for iPads that will allow me to swipe between web pages?

The marked answer to this question is not correct.
You can move backward in a web page thread by placing your finger at the extreme left edge of the page and swiping to the right. You can move forward (if you have backed up) by placing your finger at the extreme right edge of the page and swiping to the left.

    Hello,
You are correct, Blue tooth low engergy, BTLE.(only) devices are not backward compatible with Classic bluetooth and cannot connect.
However the Apple 4S and above have Bluetooth 4.0 support.. Hardware wise it has bothClassic Bluetooth, like the 3GS, as well as Bluetooth Low Energy.  There is no good reason why your 4s cannot communicate to your Sony in-dash player using the Classic bluetooth that resides in the 4S.
I know that this does not answer the why it does not work, but it should work. Do you have to somehow re-pair the new phone up to the player?  Not  knowing the model of the Sony it is hard to investigate.
And I hate to ask but are you sure that the Bluetooth radio is on in the phone?

How do i delete songs from my iphone when they don't show up in itunes? Swiping across the song on the iphone does not give me a delete button.

    Hello audreywisc,
Songs can be removed from your iPhone by tapping 'Songs,' then swiping the song, then tapping Delete.
Remove a song from iPhone. Tap Songs, swipe the song, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.

  • 11.1.2.1 HFR Studio backwards compatibility with 9.3.1?

We're currently working through a migration upgrade from 9.3.1 to 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.1 and plan to run through a couple of months of parallel testing before going live.
I've seen that the 11.1.2.1 Smartview has some backwards compatibiility with 9.3.1, but I'm trying to verify if we could install and use the 11.1.2.1 version of HFR Studio to manage both reporting environments (9.3.1 & 11.1.2.1) during the parallel phase.
Anyone with any experience on this topic?

According to the support matrix, FR Studio 11.1.2.1 only supports 11.1.2.1 Essbase, Planning and HFM database connections:

  • My iPad 1 is now very unstable. Apps crash consistently, Mac Numbers/Pages etc incompatible with IOS 5.1 etc. There seems to be no backwards compatibility to iPad 1. Am I just supposed to throw it away? I have restored the iPOad and it has ample storage .

My iPad 1 is very unstable. Many Apps simply crash after opening. There is ample storage available.I have restored the iPad twice now and still it is unstable.
Is this a lack of backwards compatibility because no-one writes apps for IOS 51.1. and the original iPad anymore? not even Apple, as the documents and sheets I create on my Mac are incompatible with my iPad now.
My naievete tells me that this is simply Apple expecting us to upgrade to later levels of hardware. If so, very disappointing for an Apple fan. Seems your App developer approvals (even your own apps) do no require compatibility with anything but IOS 6 or later.

There are various things to make your iPad more stable. You can try deleting all apps from the multitasking bar; do a reset ie hold the power and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears; Settings > General > Reset all Settings.
If you had the previous version of iPages (version 09) on your Mac before upgrading to Pages 5.2, your Mac should still have that version in Applications, which is still compatible with your version of Pages on your iPad.
If you don't have that version, you can 'Export to Pages 09' which is still compatible with iOS 5.1.1.

  • XCelsius 2008 is not backward compatible with ver 4.5

I tried opening a project that was done with ver 4.5 but it just said that "Crystal Xcelsius is unable to load this file. This file may be corrupt or may have features that cannot be supported by this version of Crystal Xcelsius." So i guess I probably have to recreate the project in the 2008 version to take advantage of the new features available. So I imported the excel datasheet used in the old project to a new project in Xcelsius 2008 and tried recreating the objects from scratch. I had started with an accordion menu and two list boxes and then I decided to export to swf to test. However, the result was disappointing. I could only see the two list boxes but not the accordion menu. There was a message saying "Initializing..." that stayed. Does this mean I have to recreate the excel data from scratch as well?

X2008 is backward compatible with CX4.5.  But Jim is correct. There is a bug in X2008 which prevents it from opening some 4.5 models by double-clicking on the filename.  They can be opened from the File > Open menu.  This only affects opening the model.Due to the many changes between CX4.5 and X2008, the migration of old CX4.5 models is not clean.  Differences will be seen.  Most are cosmetic affecting only the look of the model.  But some tidy up, color changes and re-alignment work must be done.   There was no way to gain the benefits of X2008 and still keep CX4.5 models unchanged.Andy

I have not worked in this strategy but will try,
What i found was, in Planned orders detailed scheduling tab, the Scheduling type appeares to be Forward, but when i convert it to Production order it shows backward scheduling.
