Swirly beach ball on wake up

When I wake up my computer from sleep (e.g. open the lid) my computer will at times (more frequently now) take a while to load. My cursor becomes the swirly beach ball and I am un-able to log my self in. This began a while ago and has since become an almost reliable nuisance. I am running the newest version of Lion. I have tried updating my software, nothing there. I also have a boot camp, which is slightly on the fritz right now. Also some times on boot i get the circle with a line through it but I think that has everything to do with my goofy boot camp.

Hi,
We have a MBP 2010 i7 and after putting it to sleep in clamshell, upon waking we get the beach-ball cursor for several seconds. Is this normal?
Strangely, it only seems to only happen after a whole night of sleeping, not during the day of only 1 or 2 hours. I'm told the ball is a bad sign, but there seems to be plenty of RAM and resources. Never freezes during operation either.
Strange, because we never get this in our 2008 MBP.
Any advice? Thanks.
Wilde.
Don't worry about, it's normal. If the spinning beachball goes 10 minutes or so, then you'll have to shut it down.
Back in the old days of OSX (maybe 10.4), it was terrible. Sometimes it wouldn't wake up, sometimes it would take 15 minutes. I stopped using the sleep mode, because it was just faster to shut down and start up later.
There is a reason why shorter sleeps wake up faster, and I'll try to find the info and post it here. Anyways, relax, no problems with your MBP.

  • Mail produces Beach Ball and big lag... why?

I seem to be having a few issues since upgrading to Yosemite.  One that is particularly annoying is that whenever I open Mail, it takes the better part of a minute to appear on the screen, and then when I click on an email, the Beach Ball appears... sometimes it stays for a minute, sometimes several minutes.  It eventually goes away and I can read the email.  But should I select another email, it starts all over again.
My iMac is a late 2007 24" Aluminum, has 6GB or RAM, 500 GB HDD of which 175 GB are free.  I don't seem to have any issues using Adobe CS4 Photoshop or Illustrator, and as I do a lot of design work, I'm trying to keep as many big graphics files on my attached NAS and/or USB HDDs.  But Mail is a problem since I'm constantly sending reduced size draft files of graphics work as attachments for clients to review.
Figured I'd Include an EtreCheck Report:
    Problem description:
Opening Mail is very sluggish since Yosemite upgrade, and opening an email causes Beach Ball to spin for 1-5 minutes.  Mid 2007 iMac7,1 Intel Core 2 Extreme 2.8GHz, 6GB RAM, 800 MHz Bus, 500 GB HDD w/175 GB Free.

    Linc...
I was able to start Step 1 last night before going to sleep.  Came down this morning and Terminal was back to the normal name followed by $.  Tried opening an email and while its definitely faster than a few days ago... its still ponderously slow with the Beach Ball appearing again when I went to Reply and clicked on the Paper Clip, opening Finder, and selecting an image.  I do apologize for posting lengthy tests but I guess thats the only way we'll resolve this.  This post is a list of a simple task... Open Mail, Select an Email, Select Reply, type one word, then Select Paper Clip to attach a small 500 KB image.  So I did do Step 2 but ran the Console App again so you can see whats going on.  I noticed an interesting thing... Utility Icon is not showing up in Launchpad.  I meant to ask you about that yesterday, but its probably unrelated.  If you want me to do Step 2 just say the word.  I think we're making progress slowly, but perhaps this dialogue will help someone else bc when I Google "Beach Ball in Mac Mail" I see tons of people complaining.  Thanks again for your patience and help.

  • Spinning Beach Ball - Network Issue?

    Hi Folks,
I know there have been posts on this over time but my particular question does not appear to have been answered. My apologies if I missed a response somewhere else in the forums. I'll try to keep it short.
Basically, a month or so ago I started getting the spinning beach ball in any application at various points of time. There was no rhyme or reason it seemed. It could happen when I have one application open, 5 applications open, it could happen in 5 five minutes or 2 hours later. Once the beachball started spinning, it wouldn't go away and it prevented me from using other apps as well, compelling me to do a manual shut down. I typically use only iPhoto, Safari, iDvd, Numbers and Mail. It could happen in any of them.
I've tried everything. Apple tech support had me do an archive and install - didn't work. I got Disk Warrior 4.2. Nope. I deleted plug-ins and did some other maintenance tasks etc., etc. but nothing worked.
Activity Monitor didn't seem to show anything alarming. Same with Console. Apple suggested I bring it into a tech at the local Apple Store. I did that and after 4 days of running their diagnostics, they could not replicate the 'hang' on the applications. That is, they found no problems with the Macbook - hardware or software.
Now I'm wondering (not being a computer savvy person I don't know if this is possible) if this is a wireless internet issue. Could my home network be a source of the application 'hang' (spinning beach ball) that I've experienced? It's the only thing I can think of that is different from my home computer set-up to the store. My router/modem is a SMC Gateway.
Any thoughts are really appreciated. Thanks so much for your brains on this!
    Andyman

  • Beach ball on black screen when waking Mini from sleep

I am looking for a way to fix this frequent problem. About 25% of the time I wake this 2-year-old Mac Mini from sleep, it will show a spinning beach ball or a regular pointer on a totally black screen. The monitor connected is an Acer, by the way, and it's had multiple color calibrations done to it... Anyways, the pointer or beach ball doesn't go away if you just let it sit awhile, but it does move with mouse motion. So the only ways of getting to the login screen from there are:
hold down the power button on the computer for 10 seconds, then start it up as usual.
unplug the HDMI cord that connects to the display from the back of the computer.
    What does not work:
unplug the HDMI from the back of the display
turn the monitor off and on
    unplug and replug the monitor
pressing keyboard shortcuts to shutdown, reboot, sleep, etc. don't work.
So from this I've deduced that it has something to do with the Mac Mini recognizing the Acer display and having to refresh that port's connection.
What I've already tried that has not permanently fixed the problem:
    Reset the PRAM
Having frequent power outages counts as resetting the SMC, right?
    restarting the computer (duh)
    Doing the Apple Diagnostic test
Had Disk Utility test the hard drive (well ok its an ssd) and found no problems with it.
Help! It's not so much a problem for me but one other person who uses this computer is computer illiterate and cannot do a hard reset or figure out which cable goes where. And please, please, please do not take the easy way out and tell me to reinstall OSX (it's mavericks by the way). Thank you very much.

Humm... May have something to do with the straight HDMI connection, others have also complained about similar problems using a straight HDMI connection.
    1. You tried a different HDMI cable...? (you didn't say)
    2. What model is your Acer and what other inputs (DVI, VGA, etc.) does it support...?
I run dual DVI Samsung monitors on my Mac Mini and have not experience any problems. One is on the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI adapter and the other in on a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
No a power outage does not equal an SMC reset. If fact, it can have just the opposite effect and throw the System Management Controller off kilter.

  • The movies from my Iphone 5 are not coming across on Apple TV. The little spinning beach ball appears like it is thinking.  It use to work but quick working a month ago.

The movies from my Iphone 5 are not coming across on Apple TV. The little spinning beach ball appears like it is thinking.  It use to work fine but quick working a month ago. I mirror from my phone to the Apple TV.  Still images and everything I do on the phone is mirrored on to the TV except when I want to show a YouTube video or any video and then the screen on the phone and the TV screen go black and the spinning beach ball appears.  The videos open right up on the phone if I do not have mirroring on and going through the Apple TV.  I just downloaded the latest update to the phone it did not fix the problem.  Please help.  Thanks, Elvis G

    Hello Elvis G,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps concerning device issues. You may want to consider a reset, then testing to see if the issue is resolved:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • Spinning beach ball, mouse tracks, screen turns to patches of lines

Spinning  beach ball appears a lot, mouse leaves a wide track across screen when the computer wakes up,  screen turns to lines across it, with desktop visible beneath. Really weird. Anyone have similar symptoms?

Hmmm all I can say is my windows shake without me touching anything and my trackerpad is already disabled!

  • What causes spinning beach ball upon waking from sleep

I have a 4 year old iMac that has recently developed an intermittent problem. If I put it to sleep, sometimes on waking up, the hard drive access seems to stop. I hear a tap sound as though it was trying to read the disk, but it gets stuck and a spinning beach ball appears instead of the cursor. I can move it around, but I cannot perform any actions. The ball will stay forever if I let it.
Another variation occurs shortly after wake-up, where I start to click on a file on the desktop or even an icon in the Dock. The name will become highlighted and then the same spinning beach ball appears.
The only cure for the behavior has been to shut it down and reboot. It then works fine.
The weird thing is that I have just been using it for 6 hours straight with out any hassles... until I will put it to sleep!
I have tried running Disk Utility from the Leopard System Disk as well as repairing permissions and I have used Disk Warrior 4 . It seemed to allow about 6-8 sleep cycles before the symptoms re-appeared.
I verified the disk and repaired the permissions again yesterday and all seemed OK. Yet today, when I started up from sleep. the system froze. The only cure so far is to never allow the hard drive to sleep. I put the display to sleep after 15 minutes but the hard drive continues to spin.
I am concerned that not sleeping the hard drive will do harm to it.
I am using OS 10.5.8 on a 233 Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac
I have Parallels 4 installed and cannot tell you if the problems started after a PC session.

    HI Studio Guy,
Welcome to the forums. When ever your having trouble with a computer; it's really a good idea to back every thing up. If your not backing up; http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427 explains how to back up your computer to an external hard drive. (assuming your using 10.5 or 10.6)
You could try running a hardware test on the computer. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
You could try a safeboot, it can repair lots of issues. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
This article explains how to delete the sleep image; a bad sleep image can cause wake from sleep issues. http://osxdaily.com/2010/10/11/sleepimage-mac/
But if your hard drive is rapidly making a taping noise you may want to take it to a genius bar; they might recommend replacing the hard drive. http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/

  • IMac bootup issues and spinning beach ball of death.

    Hello Hello.
So I was recently given a brand new iMac 27inch by Apple, due to the death of my 2008 24inch iMac. Everything has been going great with it until today. I restarted it at some point this afternoon, and ever since then it has been acting quite strange. First thing i've noticed is that when I boot it up, when it gets to the white screen with the gray apple logo and the spinning thing, there is now a transparent rounded rectangle bar at the bottom of the screen for a minute or so...which was never the case before. Then, if it decides to proceed to OSX (sometimes it wont), the beach ball of death never stops spinning, which of course means i can do pretty much nothing. On top of that, it will not connect to the internet...my Macbook Pro connects fine to the wifi, so I know it's not my service. Bottom line, I have no idea what is going on. I've had it only for a couple of months, and haven't really had any problems until now. I'm hoping I'll just wake up in the morning and everything will be back to normal...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for yer time
    IAN

I was able to get 'places' working on my Mac Pro by opening a library I created on my Macbook Pro (no crashing experienced in that install from the start) that contained a single geotagged image. The function works fine even after deleting the image, it just seemed to need the location data to get it kicking. I was creating a new library (since started as a trial) and was not upgrading an version 2 library.
There is obviously a bug here that needs addressing though.

  • Spinning beach ball (again)

I've been having a lot of "nonspecific" problems with my Mac Pro. They seem to happen more frequently after I've woken the computer from sleep. As far as I can tell, they are not application related. I get a spinning beach ball that persists for several moments, and then stops. Occasionally the entire system freezes and I have to hold the power button on the front of the computer to get it to shut down.
A few days ago one of my hard drives failed. I thought that may have been the cause of the problems, but I've replaced the drive and I'm still experiencing the issues.
I've booted from the Apple Install DVD and repaired all of my internal disks and repaired permissions several times. I've also run DiskWarrior 4.1 from an external disk. None of this has helped.
Is there anything else I can do short of a total reinstall?

I'm not sure what would constitute suspicious behavior in Activity Monitor? What should I be looking for?
No, I don't have Little Snitch installed.
It really does seem like the problems start after waking from sleep. Perhaps I should just avoid sleeping the computer. I had the "reboot on wake" problem so many others did, and that was fixed by the firmware update, but in all my years using Macs it seems like sleep has been a major source of problems.
My computer is on all day because I'm working on it, and I have it set to automatically back-up at 11:00 and sleep afterwards until 7:00 or 8:00 when I start working. I guess I could just leave it on 24/7 and see if I still have problems.

  • Spinning beach ball when waking up from screen saver or sleep

A few months ago, my ancient (Quicksilver G4) Mac started giving me a spinning beach ball for a few seconds every time I wake it up from sleep or from the screen saver. It lasts anywhere from about 5 to 20 seconds. It never used to do this. The problem has continued despite a recent upgrade form 10.3.9 to 10.4.10. Repairing permissions and resetting PRAM hasn't helped. Any ideas?

Well... I tried many of those things in the search results, and nothing changed initially... i.e. after changing desktop backgrounds (which is all it seemed to take on my mini), and then changing passwords, I continued to not be prompted for my password until I restarted. Logging out might've worked as well, but I just went gung ho and went right for the restart.

  • New iMac getting beach ball few times a week

Beach ball appears occasionally. Apple says all is OK but keep getting spinning wheel about 3 times a week. Only happens for few seconds.i took the computer to Apple store, major hassle, and they could not detect anything

  • Beach Ball after Startup or Hibernation

    Greetings,
I face a very annoying problem and I have no idea how to troubleshoot. Most of the time, when I start the computer or wake it up, I get a beach ball for 2-5 minutes. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does, nothing responds except GUI. It doesn't occur immediately but after 3-5 minutes of regular usage. I can't pinpoint it to a single application. I saw beach ball after starting or using iTunes, starting Skype, opening a few tabs in Firefox, executing a MySQL query and so on. It happens only once per session and everything is fine after that until I shut down or put the computer to sleep.
I tried to run top but it freezes before I can see which process jumps to the top.
Also, in the console I saw "kernel[0]: jnl: unknown-dev: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5". But it's not there after each beach ball. So, I don't know if it's related or not.
Finally, I suspect it started after I enabled "put the hard disks to sleep when possible". I tried that option on and off and in different combinations for Battery and Power Adapter, it doesn't solve the problem.
I would appreciate any help. The issue drives me absolutely nuts.
    Thanks!

I only have Logitech Trackman connected from time to time and I get beach ball with or without it.
I was able to re-create the problem and dumped the messages. Only two of them look suspicious.
Nov 12 21:52:36 localhost kernel[0]: GFX0: family specific matching fails
    Nov 12 21:52:50 leleka kernel[0]: AppleYukon2: 00000000,00000000 sk98osx_dnet - recovering from missed interrupt
They were well before the beach ball, which occurred at 22:02 and lasted for 3 minutes. I reviewed all log files and there are absolutely no messages from 21:53 to 22:05 when beach ball was over and I opened a terminal window.
There are a few error messages in system.log that are most likely unrelated as well.
Nov 12 21:53:08 leleka mDNSResponder[22]: NOTE: Wide-Area Service Discovery disabled to avoid crashing defective DNS relay 192.168.78.1:53

    Nov 12 21:53:09 leleka loginwindow[23]: Unable to resolve startup item: status = -43, theURL == NULL = 1
I have VMWare installed. I don't currently use it but it does a lot of work at startup. Perhaps, I should try uninstalling it?
    Thanks!
